As the youngsters in this year‘s Confirmation classes keep telling me: there are no words to explain just how amazing God is, how powerful he is, and just how loving he is. So the festivals we celebrate this month often defy our attempts to define. We begin with Ascension Day on 2nd June, followed ten days later by Pentecost on 12th June and, one week later, ends the threesome with Trinity Sunday – before we head into the long season described by the church as ‗Ordinary Time‘. After Easter we try to find ways of explaining how the risen Christ is still fully human in his risen form. At school assembly we tried to list the properties of a ghost – something that can‘t be touched, that can‘t speak, and that can‘t eat – something that truly doesn‘t exist. The Gospel writers make it quite clear that although this Jesus mysteriously appeared on the road, in the upper room, and on the shore of the lake, he is not an apparition, or a figment of the imagination. He spoke with his friends, he ate with his friends, and he was touched by his friends. The crucifixion hadn‘t left him unscarred, but he was alive in a new way… an eternal way. On Ascension Day, we mark his last appearance to his friends, leaving them with the promise of the Holy Spirit that would enable them to carry on his work. He knew he was no longer essential to them. Rather like the parent who teaches his child to ride a bike – even when the pupil is wobbly and unsure, the parent lets go of the saddle and watches as his child tentatively pedals away – growing in confidence every few yards. Unless Jesus became timeless, he couldn‘t be with all his disciples through the centuries. So we are given the description of him rising into heaven, which is so beautifully depicted in our window over the altar. The Pascal candle, the symbol of the light of the risen Christ with us in the world, which shines through each service in church from Easter Eve, is now extinguished, to acknowledge that the physical presence of Jesus has gone, but the power of Jesus remains with using the sharing of the bread and cup – and with us in the invisible person of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit is also hard to explain rationally. We only have symbols to nudge us to towards an understanding. This year, we are setting up ‗Experience Pentecost‘ with six stations to help us grasp just what an amazing gift this is for us: We will have a tree of doves – while we wait from the day of Ascension to the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost The children will be installing lots of things that are moved by the wind: balloons, flags, sails and kites – to show that once the apostles had received the Holy Spirit, they were moved to action The next station reflects on how the apostles went out as lights of Christ into 4 the world to tell the good news – and our font, the place of the beginning of our journey of faith at baptism, will be surrounded by candles The Holy Spirit made them brave enough to travel to other places to spread the Word – and we will have a pathway on which to place our own footprints And the radically different lifestyle that they embraced included such love for God and for neighbour, that they were able to share all they had with not only family and friends, but the poor, the sick and those who lived on the margins of society – and the sharing, gathered them into the body of Christ, the emerging church The sharing attracted others to them – so the Holy Spirit encouraged growth all around the world It‘s an amazing story, which began on that day in the upper room, with the wind of change, and the tongues of flame, that continues today, as we pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit to each Baptism Candidate. Please come and spend time in church, reflecting on all these aspects and consequences of Pentecost. Children from Amberley School and Amberley Ridge will be coming during the week after Pentecost, to be guided through the story, and live it in activity and prayer. But it‘s equally powerful for adults too. It can be done individually, or in a group, and instructions and suggestions are placed at each station. Come and live the story! The last great festival is one week later on Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate the power of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This mystery is symbolised on our beautiful Altar Frontal, where crown, cross and dove are interwoven. This year we are celebrating our benefice patronal festival – ten days of celebration from the festival of St. Barnabas, for whom the church in Box is named, to Trinity Sunday for whom both our churches in Minchinhampton and Amberley have been dedicated. Many events have been planned including a Songs of Praise in Minchinhampton, Open Gardens in Box – and our own Experience Pentecost event. So have a wonderful month of June; waiting, receiving, telling, doing, sharing and growing the love of Christ at all times and in all places! Blossom in the summer sunshine, and in the Spirit! Ann Bible Storytime: Church (9.30 – 10am): 6th June 5 Welcome to the June edition. It‘s very helpful when we get feedback about issues raised in the magazine. As you‘ll see later on, Margaret Gardner had a great response to her appeal regarding the state of the bus shelter, and we‘ve had positive help on how to approach the council for quiet lanes in Amberley. June is such an enjoyable month. All our hard work in the garden during Autumn and early Spring pays off, with lovely flowers, the chirruping of baby birds and the promise of tasty veg to come. Why don‘t you consider joining Amberley Gardening Club? It hosts Speakers with a fount of knowledge regularly – usually with very amusing anecdotes to describe their experiences throughout the year. It‘s also a good way to meet more people who live in your immediate area. Margaret‘s a regular member so call her for more information on 872230. Pentecost takes place in the first half of this month, and the church will be decorated with stations explaining the exhilarating events that happened after Christ‘s death and resurrection - events that changed the world forever. Take a quiet moment to walk around the church. Please read us from cover to cover and send us articles, your favourite recipes (especially chocolate ones) jokes, anecdotes or anything else you would like to share with us. The Communications Team Margaret Gardener 872230 - Sue Piechowiak 873662 PLANT STALL BRING AND BUY – 5th June (bring your money!) On Sunday 5th June, in addition to the usual Fair Trade stall in Church, Rosemary and Jane will be holding a plant stall to raise money for Church flowers. There will be a variety of plants for sale, but if you have any bedding, perennial or veg plants surplus to your requirements, please bring them along for us. Many thanks, Rosemary and Jane Spare Produce to Preserves It is June, and fruit will soon be ripening. If anybody has a glut of anything at all, Gill and Jane would be happy to take it off your hands and turn it into preserves, pickles, jams and jellies to sell in aid of Church and Parish Room funds. Many thanks, Gill and Jane (jane_foreman@btinternet.com, Tel: 01453 833028) 6 Pastoral Care Group At a meeting of the Pastoral Care Group it was suggested that members of the Parish of Amberley who wish to request either prayer support, express a worry or receive a visit be able to do so through the Post Office. A ‗contact box‘ is now in place in the Post Office, as well as one at the back of the Church. Please put a note in the box to let us know: Of any concern you would like us to pray about (with or without names) Any worry you wish to share If you would like a visit, please leave your name and contact number The Cappella Singers at Minchinhampton Parish Church. Saturday 2nd July 2011. ―THE VENETIAN EFFECT‖. Accompanied by a prestigious ensemble of cornetts and sackbutts, led by Adrian Woodward, The Cappella Singers, conducted by Philip Colls, present an unusual programme featuring music mainly by composers who worked in Venice but were not native to the city. The concert will include music from the 16th and 17th Centuries by Monteverdi, Lassus, Willaert, Hassler and Gabrieli. The concert begins at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 on the door, under 16‘s are free. Enquiries to 01452 501752. To London and back Thanks to all of you who supported Jane and Gill, and on the last mile Huw, as they travelled to London and back on a treadmill to raise money for my sister, Tina. Your generosity has meant that £900 has been collected for Tina and this has enabled her to buy a television and a sofa bed, home comforts that will provide her with both pleasure and space for overnight guests. Tina's progress after suffering a spinal stroke has been slow and steady and she is just beginning to enjoy life outside of hospital in her specially adapted home. She will be visiting Amberley and looks forward to thanking each one of you personally for your loving support, for which Deborah and I are also grateful. Nic Curram 7 Parish Outing Stowe-on-the-Wold and Sezincote – 23rd June We are planning to use shared private cars on Thursday, 23rd June to get to Stow-on -the-Wold, leaving Amberley Church at 10.30am. We shall travel in convoy and will lunch at the Stow Lodge Hotel when we arrive at approximately 12 noon. They serve main dishes at around £10 and light snacks at around £7. We shall then go on to Sezincote for 2pm, where guided tours of the house and garden cost £10 (or £5 for the garden only). If you wish to join us for this excellent day out, please add your name to the list at the back of the Church, stating whether you are willing to drive or would like a lift in someone else‘s car. We suggest that those being given a lift might contribute £5 towards petrol, etc. We hope sincerely you will want to join us on this outing. Benefice Walk – 11th June On Saturday 11th June – the Feast Day of St Barnabas and the day before Pentecost – we are holding a walk around our three parishes, Minchinhampton, Amberley and Box. As all three parishes are at similar heights above sea level, the walk will not involve hills. We shall be meeting at The Crown at Minchinhampton at 9.45am in time to begin walking at 10am. This will enable us to return to The Crown for lunch at around 1pm. If you would like to join us, please add your name and contact details to the list at the back of the Church. Dates for your Diary ―Event on the Green‖ (similar to that held during last year‘s Amberley Festival) – Saturday 16th July Lunch on the day after Deborah Curram‘s licensing as a Reader – Sunday 25th September Harvest Supper - Sunday 9th October The Social Committee Methodist Circuit Meeting - Sunday 8th May Our grateful thanks to all who kindly provided cakes; to the Social Committee who organised the excellent tea and to all the 'extra' folk who offered their help on the day. I am deputy parish clerk at Rodborough and as such was only partially involved in the establishing of the Quiet Lanes. If you want to have Quiet Lanes or 20mph zones in Amberley, you will almost certainly have to go through Minchinhampton Parish Council. They are in a position to negotiate with Gloucestershire Highways. Have a talk with Di Wall, their clerk, and ask her to put it on the council agenda. Worth mentioning to her that Rodborough have done it and she can always talk to us about it. She will know how to contact us. It is quite a long procedure and also potentially costly. The signs themselves have to paid for and, if I remember correctly, think we had to pay some legal costs. There has to be thorough consultation with residents. Please do get in contact if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Joy Jackson She Stoops to Conquer: 14th to 18th June - Cotswold Players First produced in 1773, this delightful comedy has been a favourite of audiences for more than two centuries. La Bohème: 24th June - OperaUpClose La Bohème has been transported to modern day Kilburn from the original in 1830‘s bohemian Paris. This adaptation is sung in English and has been conceived to make La Bohème as immediate, relevant, accessible and emotionally engaging for today‘s audiences as it was when it was first performed in 1896. Tom Jones: 1st July - Bristol Old Vic Theatre School A comic masterpiece, Tom Jones is deservedly a classic in English literature. Sheer fun and bursting with bawdy scenes, it's a feast from beginning to end. Sunday Club 5th June - Kat Parker and Jane Foreman 19th June - Deborah Curram and Emily Lucas 26th June - Vanessa Owen and Janet Saunders 11 Messy Church @ Amberley on Tuesday the 21st of June In Church at 3.30 until 5.30pm What is Messy Church? Messy church is because life is messy not neat and tidy. One size doesn’t fit all! One style of church does not suit all kinds of people, so Messy Church is on the move for the whole family and it’s free. You can do a little or you can do a lot – it’s up to you! We start with a snack and a chat which will lead into lots of colourful activities, songs, stories and praise, eventually finishing with tasty pizzas to share. Every time there will be Christian theme and this time it’s a fishy tale ‘Jonah and the Whale ’ Messy church is something different. It’s about people who want to do church differently and want to share it with others too. So we look forward to seeing you. Thank You We made an appeal in the April magazine for someone to clean the bus shelter near the Amberley Inn. Not only has it been cleaned but painted inside and the windows cleaned. Our very grateful thanks to Sally who now manages The Amberley Inn. Margaret Gardner. 12 Amberley Gardening Club We were delighted to welcome an enthusiastic audience for our May meeting although the speaker was a little disappointing. What had promised to be a fascinating and informative subject was not presented as well as we hoped but there were some interesting facts and anecdotes through the evening. The outing to Malvern Spring Show will have taken place by the time you read this and hopefully was a great success. Our next outing is on July 20th to Rodmarton Manor and members will receive details shortly. As a change from our usual programme we are having an extra meeting in June, on the 15th from 6.30 to 8 pm. This will be a social gathering at Geoff and Maggie Annis‘s garden at Edgehill and it is restricted to members – plus partners if they wish to come. There will be a small charge of £2.50 each, which will include the first drink and finger food and further drinks will be available at a moderate price. Please note that there is very limited parking at the property and you are requested to park in the layby on the Pinfarthings road. Further details and directions are available from any committee member but we do hope you will come and enjoy the evening.
