What started as a dance party for 200 friends on the high seas has evolved into a one-of-a-kind experience attracting more than 2,000 Latin dance lovers and enthusiasts each year, and ADC is proud to be at the helm of this phenomenon. As the gates opened and enthusiastic passengers clamored onto the Carnival Ecstasy for ADC’s second ever full-charter cruise this past November, the energy was palpable and pulsating from stem to stern. The Caribbean-bound journey boasted Grammy award-winning recording artists, a plethora of worldclass dance performances, more than 60 dance workshops, two private beach parties on Bahamian isles, themed parties throughout and more than 70 hours of dancing with several interactive performances. It was no surprise that once the ADC sailed back into the Port of Miami following the four-day, three-night extravaganza, guests were lining up to reserve a spot on the 2015 voyage. “We never imagined this kind of response in such a short amount of time,” commented Moshe Rasier, founder of the Aventura Dance Cruise. “We pride ourselves on developing an itinerary that no other cruise can match, providing guests with a never-before-seen array of talent, performances, workshops and round-the-clock party, and its quickly became our trademark.” International Salsa Magazine / Jan 2015 7 REVIEW 8 International Salsa Magazine / Jan 2015 AVENTURA DANCE CRUISE Aventura Dance Cruise has earned its reputation for placing a huge emphasis on assembling a roster of talent that is truly impressive and eclectic mix of top award winning and up-and-coming musical and dance performances to appeal to and the cruise’s various audiences and ages, and ADC 2014 was no exception. On the musical side, passengers were treated to sensational performances by Latin GRAMMY-winning and Billboard Latin chart-topping Venezuelan reggaeton duo Chino y Nacho, Latin GRAMMY-nominated artist Leslie Grace, and legendary crooner José “El Canario” Alberto. ADC also painstakingly invites a remarkable set of dancers that have reached success in movies, television and the world stage. As far as the true star of the cruise, the dancing, guests had the opportunity to watch stars like choreographer Edwin Rivera, the only solo dancer featured in the Marc Anthony/Jennifer Lopez 2006 film, El Cantante; Tito Ortos, one of the most accomplished salsa stars in Puerto Rico, multi-year champions David and Paulina, Karen and Ricardo; and America’s Got Talented semi-finalists. its annual roster. As it stands today, ADC is the only Latin full ship charter, the only Latin dance full ship charter, and the largest Latin (and Latin dance) cruise in the world. “Our crowning achievement is not only giving Latin dance lovers a trip where their passions are celebrated, but in also converting those who are new to Latin dance and perhaps unfamiliar with the genre’s music into bonafide fans who want to return and share the experience with friends and loved ones. It’s all about the connection through dance and music, and what could be more memorable,” added Rasier. He showed an interest in music from a very young age and by the time he was eleven, he was singing and playing the congas with two juvenile groups. He recorded his first hit single, “Rumbón Melón”, with Joey Pastrana’s Orchestra when he was 17, which led to being hired as lead singer by bandleader Larry Harlow. Together they co-authored the Latin Boogaloo album El exigente (1967), and Miranda headlined the record Orquesta Harlow presenta a Ismael Miranda in 1968. Over the next five years, he made seven albums with Orchestra Harlow which included many of his original compositions. Miranda also began performing and recording with the newly formed Fania All-Stars in 1969, and as the youngest artist in the group, he was given the nickname “El Niño Bonito de la salsa” (The pretty boy of Salsa). He sang on 17 of their albums and appeared with them in the movies “Our Latin Thing” (Nuestra cosa, 1972), “Live In Africa” (1974) and “Salsa” (1976). In 1973, along with Frankie Rodríguez, Joe Santiago, Nicky Marrero, Nelson González and Oscar Hernández he formed his own band, the Orquesta Revelación, and released the Salsa masterpiece album Así se compone un son. Notable Orquesta Revelación album recordings include En fa menor (1976), Con mi viejo (1976), No voy al 14 International Salsa Magazine / Jan 2015 festival (1977) and Doble energia (with Willie Colon, 1980). Several of his hit songs have attained classic status, including “Arsenio”, “Pa’ bravo yo”, “Señor Sereno”, “Lupe, Lupe” and “Se fue y me dejó”. Even though Miranda has been singing for over 45 years, his voice has retained its resounding strength and melodious qualities. He has been honored with three GRAMMY nominations, 1 platinum and 8 gold albums, and countless international honors. His most recent recording, A Man and His Music: El Niño Bonito was released in 2012. Recently Miranda has been recording and performing worldwide with the Salsa Giants and also released in September 2014 his 41st album, Son 45, which features collaborations with Bobby Valentin, Richie Ray and Roberto Roena. INDIA was born in 1970 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico and grew up in the La Candela section of the South Bronx listening to recordings of Celia Cruz and Ella Fitzgerald. Discovered at age 15, she reached #1 on the Billboard Dance charts with hits like “Love and Happiness.” In 1992, Eddie By: LEHMAN CENTER Palmieri came to the studio to hear her for himself. When they recorded the amazingly popular Llegó La India via Eddie Palmieri, “The Princess of Salsa” had arrived in the world of Latin music. In 1994 she released her record-breaking album Dicen que soy, which went quadruple platinum in the US and Puerto Rico. India soon had a string of number 1 singles on the Billboard Tropical chart: “Nunca voy a olvidarte” (1994), “Ese hombre” (1994), “Mi mayor venganza” (1998), “Sedúceme” (2003), “Traición” (2003) and “Ya no queda nada” (2005).With three GRAMMY® nominations and two Latin GRAMMY nominations, India performed on Jazzin’, the hit album with Tito Puente and the Count Basie Orchestra, and Combinación Perfecta, featuring her duet “Vivir lo Nuestro” with Marc Anthony. The 2007 Latin Billboard Awards honored her with Best Female Tropical Album of the Year for Soy diferente and Latin Dance Club Play Track of the Year for “Solamente una noche.” In 2010 she released her ninth studio album, Única, and her single “Estúpida,” hit #1 on the tropical Billboard charts. In 2011, she released “Tacalacateo” as a collaboration with DJ Peppe Citarella which peaked at #13 on the Billboard dance chart. No cobramos; somos voluntarios”. Mi esposo me ayudó obligándome a salir y a asistir a Casa Maravilla. The lead takes his partner’s right hand in his left and places his right hand on her left shoulder blade. The partner should keep her left hand on his right shoulder, with her arm over his. Or start in the hand-in-hand position. The lead has his palms facing upwards, and the partner takes his hands with her palms down. This allows for more freedom of movement. Have good posture. When dancing, you should always keep your spine straight, your chin up and your shoulders back. Your chest should naturally then puff out a bit. Your body should be held with strength at all points.[1] Always look up. Keep your head held up or tilted to look at your partner. Do not look at your feet or your partner’s. Looking at your feet is a dead giveaway that you’re nervous and not sure what you’re doing. Keep your arms bent at a 90 degree angle from the elbows.[2] In this position, your hands are most easily accessible to your partner. Your arm should rest on horizontal plane. Move your hips. Most of the movement in the Salsa comes from the hips, so you will want to keep your hips loose. Don’t be afraid to sway your hips. Even if you’re just moving your foot, know that a slight hip movement goes along with it. If you move your right foot out, your right hip juts out a bit, too. Choose a song that has a 4/4 beat (four beats to the bar) and a fast tempo[2]. You’ll want music that lies somewhere between 160-220 beats per minute.[3] Before you start a song, make sure that you can keep up with the speed and identify the beats for your steps. Count as you listen to the song. If you count out the beats in the music, you will be able to find the Salsa beat and identify which steps go with which beat. If you can’t keep count while you’re listening to the song, it’s best to choose a different one. 4/4 time is counted in 8-counts. You’ll be doing one standard Salsa step in 8 beats.
