Frattallone’s Hardware to Open in Miracle Mile EDITOR’S NOTE: Frattalone’s Hardware will occupy the space vacated by Jerry’s Hardware. Tom Frattalone provides the following information about this welcome addition to our neighborhood: We are very excited to be adding our 18th store to Miracle Mile mall. We think the community around Miracle Mile is unique, and we will strive to have this store have its own personality. We strive to be a community asset and a good neighbor. Frattallone’s Hardware was started in 1975 by Larry Frattallone, and now he and his two sons, Tom and Mike, run the company. Our first store was in Arden Hills and we still operate that store. We started out in 1975 as a Coast to Coast store, but quickly converted to Ace Hardware after we grew to our second store; this has been a very strong partnership for us. We have grown from that one store to 18 stores serving 18 communities. A majority of our stores offer plants during the spring, summer, and fall months, as well as Christmas trees during the holiday. Some of our stores have full-service housewares departments, while others offer commercial/industrial products. Every site has specific customer needs and we try to make sure we meet those needs. In the hardware industry we have partnered with the strongest brands. We carry Weber grills, Toro lawnmowers and snowblowers, Scott’s fertilizer, Evergreen Award Recognizes Beautiful Landscapes in SLP Is there is there a landscape in the neighborhood you admire? Consider nominating it for a St. Louis Park Evergreen Award. Homes, apartment buildings and businesses located in St. Louis Park with exceptional plantings of flowers, shrubs and trees that are highly visible are eligible for the Evergreen Award. A certificate of recognition, publicity on the City's website and a green plant are presented to winners by the City Council each autumn. Nominations are due Aug. 1. For more information, contact Environmental Coordinator Jim Vaughan at (952) Benjamin Moore paints, G.E. lighting, and 3M products to name a few. We believe that the best products make for the happiest customer. We also strive to find American-made products whenever possible. This remains a challenge, but when there is a choice between import and domestic made products we support the domestically made products. We are in the middle of remodeling our new space now, and should start placing shelves the 12th of July, hopefully to be open by the 26th of July. There will be new paint, new floors, new lighting, and a whole new feel, but you will still be able to get all the service that you have come to expect from your hometown hardware store. --Tom Frattalone St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts is offering a summer-long Beats and Streets program with community drumming circles in Oak Hill and Wolfe Parks. Everyone is invited to participate in these free sessions led by Jeffrey Scroggins. Participants will learn a simple rhythm to play, and then everyone puts those rhythms together to create a polyrhythmic beat. The drumming circles take place every Thursday in July from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Wolfe Park and every Sunday in August from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Oak Hill Park. Jeffrey is Co-Founder and Musical Director of Earth Shake World Rhythm Ensemble, an urban-based drum and dance group with a strong emphasis on traditional West-African rhythm. Jeffrey typically brings two types of drums for the circles to use. Drums are provided, and the circles are FREE of charge to anyone who wants to participate. 924-2699 or jvaughan@stlouispark.org 2 THE VISTA VIEW SLP Rotary and Discover St. Louis Park Summer Concerts Concerts listed here are free, open to the public and suitable for all ages. There were 59 individual sales offering a wide array of items. Special thanks are due Rose Doherty, who coordinated the sale. She notes: “By all reports the Garage Sale was a huge success. Everyone I spoke to was happy with the results. One woman and her friend made just over $500 not bad for a one-day sale! Another man and his wife brought in $400. He told me he asked his wife which she was most happy about: the $400 or getting rid of things that were in their house. Her reply: ‘Cleaning out the house!’” Paula Spiteri REALTOR, GRI President’s Club Minneapolis Lakes Office Lake Calhoun Executive Center 3033 Excelsior Blvd. #100 Minneapolis, MN 55416 612-928-3505 Direct 612-715-2811 Cell 612-920-5605 Business 612-920-4706 Fax pspiteri@cbburnet.com THE VISTA VIEW W|tÅ Çwá tÇw Z Shakespeare Performances Wolfe Amphitheater W|tÅ Çwá tÇwatZ ÄwPark ]xãxÄÜç Jewelry Restor XáàtuÄ|á{xw DLKI !"#$%" XáàtuÄ|á{xw DLKI www.dgintl.com The Shakespearean classic “Romeo and Juliet” will be staged Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, July !"#$%" 6-22 from 8-10 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Amphitheater in Wolfe Park. By Lorrie Moen This yearʼs Parktacular Parade being scheduled on the Saturday before Fatherʼs Day made a very nostalgic weekend for me. Walking home from my corner vantage have numerous CDʼs of band music, which inspire me to complete my most dreaded activity, cleaning the house. This yearʼs Parktacular parade added another point with my neighbors and friends, I remembered many similar events. chapter to my familyʼs musical experience. My grandson Peter, a recent graduate of North Dakota State University, My Father was the only person in his family who was not musical. His father and his brother both played in the is in his first job as the director of the Blaine High School Marching Band. As these young musicians came marching down 40th Street in our city band and his sister was a conservatory graduate who taught piano lessons. As far as anyone knew, my father could not even carry a tune and whenever “Happy Birthday” was sung, he simply smiled. But my father loved parades, This year’s Parktacular parade added another chapter to my family’s musical experience. and we seemed to attend dozens of them. I remember as a little kid watching parades through Parktacular Parade, we relatives cheered our hearts out. Peter has long ago given up being embarrassed by his noisy family loving his many musical performances and I think he accepts his responsibility to carry on this wonderful family tradition, since I obviously did not qualify for the honor. We love music, we love bands and we love parades! the legs of adults as we sought the best possible place to see everything. I remember watching state convention parades in the heat of the North Dakota summer and the Jack Frost Winter Carnival Parade in the frigid winters. There were Homecoming Parades, American Legion Parades, the Shrine Parade, Fourth of July Parades, Military Parades, Victory Parades, Holiday Parades and the Soapbox Derby Parade. These experiences made me learn to love band music. I liked to stand as near to the drums as I could possibly get, and the rumble of their rhythm filled my entire little body with great energy. It was all very thrilling. In the third grade we could select an instrument to learn, and I came home and announced that I was going to be a drummer. The small amount of money we had to bring to purchase the drum sticks was “too much for our family” according to my mother, but I suspect she dreaded Parktacular Parade having to live every day accompanied by my unending cadences. I adjusted well to this disappointment, but to this day I drum out rhythms while waiting for the microwave bell to ring, and an empty plastic ice cream container beckons my limited but enthusiastic talents.
