Explore the north end of the city. This is a challenging, nine-mile hike with 1130’ elevation gain to the Wohlford Aqueduct and exploration of the trails that border Vista and San Marcos. Meeting location: Walnut Grove Park, 1950 Sycamore Drive. (N 33 10.902, W 117 90.113) The nature center offers hands-on nature study, hikes and a curriculum-based outdoor education program. It is the perfect place for a school field trip, birthday party or scout meeting. Las Posas Park/Palomar College Arboretum/ “P” Mountain Saturday, February 7 | 9 am to noon (sign-in at 8:30 am) Group Reservations Available Groups must pay for a minimum of 25 (group may be smaller). One free adult leader per 10 paid. This easy, three-mile hike will head east on the Santa Fe Hills Trail, south through Palomar College and west on Mission Road. A more difficult six-mile hike to “P” Mountain will also be offered. Meeting location: Cerro de Las Posas Park, 1387 West Borden Road. (N 33 09 38.04, W 117 11 12.02) Discovery Lake/Double Peak (East Approach) Saturday, March 7 | 9 am to noon (sign-in at 8:30 am) This easy, three-mile hike will visit Discovery Lake and the Discovery Creek and Cima Drive trails. A more challenging, seven-mile hike will be offered to Double Peak Park and the ridgeline trails. Meeting location: Discovery Lake Park, 650 Foxhall Drive. Cerro De Las Posas Ridgeline/Double Peak Saturday, April 11 | 9 am to noon (sign-in at 8:30 am) This moderately difficult, six-mile hike will explore the Cerro De Las Posas ridgeline trails with overlooks of Lake San Marcos, the Valley of Discovery and the Pacific Ocean. There will be steep climbs with an elevation gain of 500 feet. Meeting location: Ridgeline Trailhead Parking Lot, 102 San Elijo Road. December 29, 30 & January 2 (Closed 12/31 and 1/1) How Things Work Campers will perform a variety of science experiments and make lava lamps. January 5 to 9 & January 12 Snow Days Campers will create snow globes, snowflakes and enjoy snow cones. Adventure camp operates during non-school times and offers children kindergarten through 6th grade the opportunity to participate in creative projects, games, field trips and special events. Camp meets Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm at Jack’s Pond Recreation Center. Participants bring a sack lunch daily, afternoon snack is provided. March 30 to April 3 In the Fast Lane Campers will design hot rods, create test tracks and compete in timed races. Daily Camp Cost: $23 (R), $28 (NR) 10% sibling discount; $35 annual registration fee. Full payment is due at time of registration. Summer Camp pre-registration: April 27 to May 4 Parents must come to the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive, during the pre-registration time to fill out a registration packet and pay the annual $35 registration fee. Parents then receive registration information and an online registration date. All necessary paperwork must be completed before registering online. LEADER IN TRAINING (LIT) San Marcos Community Center or San Elijo Recreation Center Children will enjoy a night of games, crafts, pizza and movies. LIT participants will assist camp staff with camp activities while learning valuable leadership skills. LIT is offered Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm during camp. Registration procedure is the exact same as camp registration. Weekly LIT Cost: $100 (R), $115 (NR) PRESCHOOLERS Raggedy Ann & Andy Preschoolers Program is a recreational enrichment program for children ages three to five years. The program focuses on socialization skills with an introduction to academic concepts. Five sessions are offered throughout the year: Summer, Fall 1, Fall 2, Winter and Spring. Children learn social skills while participating in arts and crafts, music and movement, storytelling, outdoor play and learning fun! Monday/Wednesday/Friday Kindergarten Readiness (KR) Classes These classes are designed for children ages four to five years who are preparing for Kindergarten. The curriculum includes activities to enhance math and reading readiness skills. KR classes are not offered during the Summer session. Tuesday/Thursday Classes These classes are designed for children ages three to four years who are fully potty-trained and focus on socialization with an introduction to basic academic concepts. Registration Procedure New parents come to the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive, during the pre-registration time to fill out a registration packet. Parents then receive registration information and an online registration date. All necessary paperwork must be completed before registering online. An original birth certificate and proof of residency via a current utility or property tax bill are required. There is a $35 annual family registration fee and a 10% discount for siblings. The NON-RESIDENT fee is $50 per child, per session. Facility Reservations The City of San Marcos has 10 rentable rooms at five sites for business meetings, family celebrations or wedding receptions. A Facility Use Application is required with deposit to reserve a date. Reservations are taken no less than 30 days in advance and no more than nine months in advance.
