aryville is located near the geographic center
of Northwest Missouri, the Quad-State area —
and the entire United States.
The city is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 71, one of the country’s major north-south
thoroughfares, and U.S. 136, an east-west route that
links Indianapolis and western Nebraska. It is also
approximately midway between Interstates 29 and
35 and, therefore, near the hub of one of the major
Midwest highway networks.
As a primary four-lane route traversing from the
nation’s northern boundary at International Falls to
near Baton Rouge, U.S. 71 through Maryville connects
with I-29 just north of St. Joseph, Mo. 35 miles south.
U.S. 136, meanwhile, provides Maryville’s eastwest connection to the interstate system. It is
approximately 40 miles west to its intersection with
I-29 at Rock Port, Mo. Highway 136 also connects

POPULATION DEMOGRAPHICS

Population
Demographics
aryville and Nodaway County boast a strong
— and stable — history as a favorable location in which to live and work.
Year in, year out, the historic rural agricultural
base, augmented by solid academic, industrial and
professional employers, enables the county to boast
one of the most favorable employment rates in Missouri — ranking at or above the state and area average for almost every quarter since before 1990.
The percentage of persons over 20 with advanced
degrees is twice the national average
As is the case with most non-metropolitan areas
in the United States today, Nodaway County’s population is below its historical high, but continues to
hold steady at more than 23,000.
The county’s current population is projected
to be 23,419, based on 2012 estimates from the
U.S. Census. Of that total, Maryville has an official
estimated 2012 population of 12,015 which, coupled
with the population of the adjoining areas outside
the city limits that are included in Polk Township,
increases the immediate area’s count to more than
15,800.
The median age of all county residents is 32.2
years old, and they maintain a median household
income of $38,657, according to reports provided by
the Missouri Small Business Development Center.
Median disposable income is $32,982, with several Effective Buying Income categories exceeding
amounts that can be expected by county retailers.
The diverse cultural population reflects a higher
level of education than other communities of its
size in Missouri, and nationally. More than 87.5
percent of our residents 20 years old and older are
high school graduates, compared to 81 percent
in Missouri and 84 percent across the nation. In

he first-class, day-to-day operation of the city
of Maryville’s business is a far cry from its official
classification as a Class 3 city, a state-mandated
categorization based principally on having a population
of between 3,000 and 30,000 persons.
CITY OF MARYVILLE
Maryville, the county seat of Nodaway County, is
governed by a council/manager form of government,
a system proven to be highly successful for the community. It has historically functioned well, not only in
managing the city’s overall business and services, but
also in working hand-in-glove with the Nodaway County commissioners, local officials elected to represent
the area at the state and federal levels, and state government
offices in Jefferson City.
The five city council members are elected to serve staggered three-year terms. They,
in turn, elect a fellow councilperson as mayor on an annual
basis. The actual day-to-day
responsibilities of the city’s
operation are handled by a
professional city manager who
oversees the administration of
the various departments within the city and makes policy
recommendations to the city
council.
MARYVILLE
PUBLIC
SAFETY
Maryville’s Public Safety
Department provides the community’s police and fire protection, including 911 emergency
response. All public safety

PUBLIC WORKS
The Maryville Public Works Department has full
responsibilities for the operation and maintenance of
the city’s infrastructure, including streets, water and
wastewater lines, the storm drainage system, and the
recently updated water treatment plant located east
of the U.S. Highway 71 Bypass. Also east of the city,
a new, ultra-modern $13.75 million wastewater treatment plant is under construction to replace the city’s
current treatment facility. It is scheduled to be fully
operational in July 2015.

for the city’s accounting and financial reporting, as well
as handling the billing and collections for water and

HISTORY A PROUD PAST
F
History
A Proud Past
rom the time in 1845 when Nodaway County
was designated to be the largest of six political
subdivisions in the relatively new State of Missouri,
the county and Maryville, its county seat, have been
the governmental, cultural and academic center of
Northwest Missouri.
Nodaway County, the fourth largest of 114 counties in Missouri, encompasses 878 square miles of
fertile agricultural land that were a part of the Platte
Purchase of 1836, when the Sac, Fox and Iowa
Indians relinquished, through treaty, their rights to
the huge tract they had only recently been assigned.
It was once covered with tall waving prairie grasses
on the uplifts or “narrows” and uncluttered by trees
except along the three north-to-south rivers and the
smaller creeks. The origin of the name, Nodaway,
is generally attributed to the Pottawatomie word
for “placid.” Other origins include the Dakota Sioux
word for “crossed without canoe,” and “snake,” from
several indigenous languages.
Maryville was named in honor of Mary Graham,
the wife of Amos Graham, the town’s first postmaster and the county clerk. Mary was the first
Caucasian woman to live within the boundaries of
the settlement, incorporated in 1856.
The current population is generally of Central
European decent, primarily German, Scottish
and Irish who settled the area, and the county’s
current population has retained that rural heritage
and strong work ethic.
President Herbert Hoover once owned a farm
near Graham and the Bilby Ranch, founded near
Quitman, had holdings throughout the West. At
one time, it claimed to be second in size only to
the King Ranch in Texas. Rancho del Rayo,
established near Hopkins by William Robbins,
who amassed his wealth producing lightning rods,
proclaimed itself as the largest ranch in Missouri

Two Nodaway County farms
were famous for their horses
and horse-racing connections.
Isaac N. Prather settled on a farm just west of
Maryville in 1839. He imported a famous English
thoroughbred, Faustus, and named his farm Faustiana after the horse. The stables were home to
Elwood, the 1904 winner of the Kentucky Derby.
14
The Townsend family later used the name for its
horse farm and it continues today as the name of a
Maryville residential area.
Thoroughbred trainers Ben A. Jones and Horace
A. “Jimmy” Jones farmed, and retired, near Parnell.
During their time at the Calumet Farm, the Jones
father-and-son team trained six Kentucky Derby
champions and two Triple Crown winners.
Famous natives of Nodaway County include
Sarah Caldwell of the Boston Opera; Dale Carnegie,
author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People”
and developer of self- improvement courses; Homer
Croy, whose books depict life in Maryville; Forrest
C. Donnell, Missouri governor (1941-1945) and U.S.

he Maryville R-II School District successfully trains the community’s young people in
an atmosphere of excellence, producing results unsurpassed anywhere in the Midwest.
Those results are readily evident, not only in the
modern facilities housing the Eugene Field Elementary School, Maryville Middle School, Maryville High
School and the Northwest Technical School, but
in the level of excellence achieved by their more
than 1,900 students. The district holds a AAA rating through the Missouri School Improvement Program and is “Accredited with Distinction” as a result
of meeting the 14 standards linked to the program.
Licensed counselors and nurses are on the staff at
each school to promote emotional and physical wellbeing and growth.

R-II High School are encouraged to take advantage of as many of the school’s 110 units of credit
as possible during their careers at MHS. The district’s comprehensive curriculum also offers college
credit courses in cooperation with Northwest Missouri State University. The high school is a beneficiary of the addition of up-to-date science laboratory
classrooms and other enhancements to the physical
plant.
There is more to high school than outstanding
academics offered in modern settings, however, and
the various Maryville Spoofhound sports teams and
marching band are testimony to that. A full spectrum
of sports opportunities is available to both boys and
girls and a winning tradition pervades. The football
team won the state football championship in its class
in 2012 and 2009.
“What is a Spoofhound, anyway?” The answer is
best left for a full explanation from an alum or present-day coach or player. It is a unique team name, to
say the least, but opponents across the state know
that, year-in and year-out, the ’Hounds are a force
24
to be reckoned with.
The Northwest Technical School serves more
than 450 students from the surrounding five-county
area. Offerings in 15 different areas of specialization are designed specifically to meet the needs of
area business and industry. The technical school
also provides post-secondary training leading to licensed practical nurses’ certification. Its adult education programs include short courses in computers, electronics, woodworking, technical skills and
self-improvement, among others. These offerings
are usually available in the evenings so they do not
conflict with students’ work schedules.
Maryville elementary and middle school students
also have the choice to take advantage of two private school programs.
Horace Mann Laboratory School on the Northwest Missouri State campus provides an excellent
learning environment for pre-kindergarten through
sixth grade students. In addition to its private school
atmosphere, Horace Mann also provides on-site

NORTHWEST MISSOURI
STATE UNIVERSITY
Northwest Missouri State University and Maryville
— names that are synonymous with quality and culture across Missouri and throughout the Midwest.
The presence of the four-year, regional state university enhances the quality of life for the city’s residents, and is a catalyst that attracts educational,
cultural, political awareness and opportunities to
experience the performing arts.
Often called the most beautiful of Missouri’s colleges, Northwest’s 350-acre campus is designated
as Missouri’s State Arboretum.
Northwest’s enrollment for the fall trimester of
2013 totaled slightly in excess of 6,500 students
from throughout Missouri and the surrounding threestate region, across the United States, and around
the world. Incoming freshmen boast an average
ACT score of 22.3.
Of that total enrollment, Northwest claims approximately 360 international students from 30
countries. The majority of those students are from
India and the People’s Republic of China.
During the most recent trimester, Northwest
boasts an enrollment of approximately 70 percent
Missouri residents.
Northwest students historically perform quite well
in the classroom. Freshmen have a fall-to-fall retention rate of 69 percent, compared to the national average of 66 percent for like institutions. Northwest’s
graduation rate is 58 percent while the national average for similar institutions is 45 percent.
The university’s placement rate — the percentage of graduates who are employed or continuing
their education within six months of graduation — is
97.4 percent.
Maryville and Northwest continue to enhance a
strong “town and gown” relationship that benefits
both in many ways. With some 250 full-time faculty
whose curriculum expertise spans the full spectrum
of areas important to improving the community as
well as the campus environment, city and county
projects and programs are able to readily draw on
local “consultants.”
Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce
25
EDUCATION EXCELLENCE
Perhaps the most obvious in that category would
be the campus’ far-reaching computerized services.
What began in 1987 as the nation’s first “Electronic
Campus,” featuring a computer in every dormitory
room, has matured into a truly electronic campus
with every residence hall, classroom and faculty
office connected to the university’s state-of-the-art
computer center, providing on- and off-campus interactive and Internet services via laptop computers provided to every student. Northwest has also
been selected as a test site for future educational
advances, including electronic textbooks.
TOWN-GOWN
PARTNERSHIPS
More recently, however, the City of Maryville and
the university have partnered in additional ongoing
community improvement projects. The foremost of
those is the cooperative development of a revitalized Fourth Street Corridor to connect the main
26
campus entrance and the city’s downtown square.
That project has been recognized for its scope and
uniqueness by the International Town-Gown Association. The two entities are also cooperating in various projects to improve off-campus housing in the
university area.
The university comprises three colleges —
Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services, and the Booth College of Business and
Professional Studies — offering baccalaureate,
masters and educational specialist programs. A
doctorate in education is also offered in conjunction
with the University of Missouri.
NWMSU has significantly enhanced its nanoscience programs following the opening of the Center
for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
The $23 million facility is home to ultra-modern
classrooms and laboratories for the physical sciences as well as incubator space for cutting-edge business programs. The new facility was recognized by
the Southern Growth Initiative with its 2010 Innovation Award for economic development.

EDUCATION EXCELLENCE
(Darren Whitley, Northwest Missouri State University)
The overall excellence of the university has been
recognized four times — first in 1997, again in 2001
and 2005, and most recently in 2008 — for its overall excellence through the Missouri Quality Awards
program.
As an innovator in the field of alternative energy
through the utilization of waste wood chips, recycled
paper pellets and animal waste products, reducing
the university’s dependence on petroleum-based fuels has been a goal for more than 25 years. Beginning in 1982, its choice of fuels incrementally shifted
to alternative materials — wood chips (1982), pelletized paper (1992) and animal waste blended with
dry feedstocks (2001) — from sources found in Missouri and adjacent states.
Using funds from the Missouri Department of
Economic Development, equipment was purchased
to add a second production line dedicated to producing biomass fuels from a variety of agricultural and
agribusiness waste resources in a $700,000 addi-
28
tion to its existing Biomass Processing Center. The
university acquired a US patent for its “animal waste
to energy production” process in 2000. In 2001, it
received the top rank of “Environmental Friendliness” by the National Wildlife Federation.
After more than 25 years of operation, the use
of alternative fuel sources has saved in excess of
$12.5 million. The savings have been reallocated
into the university’s instructional programs and to
enhance salaries.
BEARCAT ATHLETICS

the city’s elaborate network of city parks and playgrounds.
The Maryville Parks and Recreation Department
has primary operational responsibilities for the city’s
facilities, including the dozen city parks. Located in
various geographical sections of the city, the parks include athletic fields, shelters, playground equipment,
walking trails and historically significant sites.
The Parks and Recreation Department is a separate entity from the City of Maryville that is governed
by a citizen’s board. Its annual budget, however, does
require city council approval.
The Maryville Community Center, the city’s versatile “Rec Center,” is undoubtedly the focal point for
year-round physical activity, so much so that Maryville
voters overwhelmingly passed a proposition to fund
additional meeting rooms and exercise space and
equipment when demand outgrew available space

Maryville’s beautiful municipal swimming pool provides water-based recreation ranging from zero-depth

Swimming lessons are available through MPR and

that is competitive with other area communities. Aquatic exercise is also available at the municipal pool.

Maryville is developing an extensive system of

HUNTING AND FISHING
Wildlife abounds in Northwest Missouri.
Hunting for deer, turkey, waterfowl, quail, pheasant,
and other small game such as rabbits and squirrels, is
popular throughout the area.
In addition to the fine angling at Mozingo Lake and
nearby Nodaway Lake and the Bilby Lake and Conservation Area, a vast assortment of private farm
ponds can make for some great fishing. Permission is
required from landowners to fish the farm ponds, but
most landowners are more than willing to provide access to responsible sportsmen.
Favorite pond-fish species are bass, crappie, sunfish (bream/bluegill) and catfish.
The State of Missouri Conservation Department
regulates hunting and fishing and valid licenses and/
or permits are required.

MOZINGO LAKE RECREATION PARK

Mozingo Lake
Recreation Park
M
aryville can legitimately proclaim itself as the
recreational center of Northwest Missouri.
Easily.
The headliner for that claim is the state-park-quality
3,000-acre Mozingo Lake Recreation Park located five
miles east of the city, just north of U.S. Highway 136
and west of Liberty Road.
The centerpieces of the multi-use recreational
area are the 1,000-acre lake that is its namesake and
a championship 18-hole golf course. Those two
premier features are only the beginning, however.
Other available amenities include fully furnished cabins, RV and tent-camping sites, a youth camp area
and other amenities.
Mozingo Lake was constructed as a water supply,
flood control and recreational reservoir. Construction
began in 1992 and the lake reached full pool in 1996.
This fantastic outdoor recreational facility takes a
backseat to no other man-made lake in Missouri. It
was constructed, primarily with federal funding, to ensure a drought- proof water source for Maryville and to
help with flood control, but it has developed into what
many enthusiasts consider to be the best fishing spot
in the state. Three boat- launch ramps provide access
for fishing, pleasure boating, jet skiing and water skiing. A sand beach for lake swimming is also available.

Mozingo’s fishing opportunities.
Fishing access to the lake is available from the three
paved fishing ramps as well as along many stretches
of its 26-mile-long shoreline.
The lake is a crappie fishermen’s paradise in the
spring and fall and a prime destination for bass fishermen throughout the year. Various tournaments are

weekly occurrences from early spring through mid-November, attracting competitors from several states. In
recent years, the stringer weights from Mozingo Lake
tournaments have been the heaviest in Missouri and
numerous fishing reports and publications cite the lake
as being one of the best fisheries in the Midwest.
MOZINGO LAKE
GOLF COURSE
“Mozingo Lake is a role model for municipal golf
courses” - Golf Digest
Nestled among the rolling hills, native grasslands
and wooded areas at the south end of the lake, Mozingo Lake Golf Course has done nothing but improve
since being nominated as “The Best New Public Golf
Course in America” by Golf Digest magazine in 1996.
The course was designed by Donald Sechrest, the
author of more than 90 courses throughout the Midwest, and opened for play in 1995. It offers a challenge
for all skill levels, stretching from 5,242 yards to its

par-72 maximum of 7,135 yards. The layout has a
course rating of 73.5 and a slope rating of 134 on rye
grass.
The course at Mozingo has been designated as
“the best moderately priced golf course in Missouri” by
USA TODAY, which, along with Golf Digest, calls it the
“best course to play in the state of Missouri for under
$50.”
The clubhouse and pro shop, remodeled in 2013,
incorporate a historic silo into the barn-motif design of
the building. A driving range, putting green, golf cart
rental and individual or group lessons are part of the
amenities available at Mozingo. The course’s overall
playability has been enhanced by the addition of an
all-weather, concrete path system serving the entire
layout.
Numerous tournaments are held each year at
Mozingo, including charitable events as well as
collegiate and high school matches and tournaments.
The course is the home links for the women’s golf
team at Northwest Missouri State University and for
Maryville and other area high schools.
Seasonal playing passes are offered, in addition
to daily greens fees.
RVs, CABINS AND CAMPING
Mozingo’s public accommodations include overnight/extended-stay cabins; a full- service RV park
and tent camping for visitors wanting to take advantage of the lake or the various hiking trails; covered
picnic shelters, and outdoor physical fitness and leadership training facilities. Limited game bird hunting is
permitted in season.
The city operates its 95-space recreational vehicle
park on a year-round basis, although the major activities are in the summer, ending, for all practical purposes, with the annual Halloween festivities at the park in
late October.
The majority of the sites (75) are available on a
space-available basis, but there are 20 spaces that
may be reserved in advance. The RV park provides
water and electricity, showers and restroom facilities,
a dump station and a playground for younger campers. It is connected to the Lookout Point area of the
lake by a concrete hiking and biking trail completed in
conjunction with the city’s expanded hiking/biking trail
system.
Five cabins that can accommodate from six to

year are located nearby.

COMMUNITY QUALITY OF LIFE
54
Spiritual life in Maryville centers around more than
20 churches representing a broad spectrum of Christian faiths, ranging from Roman Catholic to a wide
variety of Protestant denominations.
Baptist, Christian, Lutheran, Methodist and Roman
Catholic student facilities are operated for Northwest
Missouri State University students and there is also an
Episcopal student organization.
Much of the religious outreach activity in the community is coordinated through the Maryville Ministerial
Fellowship, which provides an ecumenical approach to
Christian service.
The major outreach by members of the alliance is
the operation of the Ministry Center, a facility that helps
the less fortunate in the community. Food, clothing,
home heating assistance and emergency funding are
routinely made available to qualifying patrons.
Many of the area churches also cooperate in providing interfaith services and study groups throughout the
year.
Aside from the many churches in Maryville and
throughout the county, the single most impressive religious community in the area is located in the Conception-Clyde area east of Maryville.
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception — des-
ignated by Pope Pius XII in 1941 as one of only 33
basilicas in the United States — is the centerpiece of
the Benedictine community at Conception. The basilica
and its Beuron murals have undergone a two- decade
restoration costing $9 million. It was completed in 1999.
Conception Abbey was founded in 1873 and designated as an abbey in 1881. Today, the abbey population numbers 65 monks who celebrate the Eucharist
and Liturgy of the Hours daily. They also staff and administer the facilities there, including the Conception
Abbey, St. Benedict Monastery, Seminary College, and
the Printery House, a commercial printing business
specializing in religious cards and other materials.
The monks also serve as parish priests and hospital
chaplains in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas
City-St. Joseph and other dioceses.
The Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration located at Clyde is one of three convents for Benedictine
Sisters in the United States. It houses a Religious Relics Museum containing 550 documented saint artifacts,
thought to be the largest such collection in America.
The sisters produce more than 2 million altar breads
weekly that are distributed across the United States
and in nine foreign countries. The convent also markets Monastery Scents, a popular line of bar soap.
