Adults only. Maximum per class: 30 people. The following applies to the rental fees of the following three community/recreation centers. • 50% advance deposit is due when making the reservation, with the balance being due seven (7) days prior to use of the facility. • Cancellation over thirty (30) days in advance – full refund minus a $5.00 processing fee. • Cancellation less than (30) days in advance – 75% refund. • Cancellation less than fourteen (14) days in advance – no refund. November 26 beginning at 6:00 PM, Tree Lighting at 7:15 PM H.O.M.E. (Hall-Oldfield-Maryville Empowerment) and the MLK Community Center partner for this annual community celebration to kick-off the Christmas holidays. Special Events AREA 15 SPECIAL OLYMPICS The Area 15 Special Olympics Program is open to Blount County citizens Age 8 years & older. The ultimate goal of this program is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them fair opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing public awareness of their capabilities and needs. Schools and centers throughout Blount County participate in these events. However, any person whose school or center does not participate OR any adult who does not attend a school or center is eligible to compete as an independent athlete. The following athletic competitions are held each year: 2016-2017 Events include: Winter Games – January 29-31 – Ober Gatlinburg Regional Basketball – February 11 – Maryville College Basketball – February - Date to be announced – Heritage High School Powerlifting – Date and location to be announced. Track & Field – April - Date to be announced – Heritage High School Bowling – September - Dates to be announced – Crest Bowling Lanes 2016 ANNUAL HEALTHY BLOUNT TRIPLE CROWN OF RUNNING This event consists of the Spring Sprint (April 9), the Scholars Run (Aug. 13), and the Reindeer Run (Dec. 4). To be eligible for the Triple Crown cash awards and a special memento, participants must compete in all three races. To be eligible to win door prizes valued at a minimum of $100, participation in two races is required. Both runners and walkers at each event are eligible for great door prizes. Scholars Run 5K Road Race & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk This event is a 5K (3.1-miles) road race and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk and is the second event of the Healthy Blount Triple Crown of Running. The race begins and ends on the Maryville College campus. A portion of the proceeds from this race will fund two annual student scholarships sponsored by the Foothill Striders, Inc. Individual and team competition will take place. Special awards will be given to the Overall and Masters winners, the top three finishers in each age division, and to the top three teams in the 5K. All Fun Run/Walk participants will receive a ribbon. Date: Saturday, August 13 Location: Maryville College – Cooper Athletic Center Time: Check-in: 6:45-7:30 AM 5K Race: 8:00 AM 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk: 8:45 AM Registration: Entry forms may be obtained at the Parks & Rec. Reindeer Run 5K Road Race & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk This run, which is the final leg of the Healthy Blount Triple Crown of Running, is a 5K (3.1 miles) and a 1-Mile Fun Run/ Walk. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the Empty Pantry Fund. Awards will be given to the Overall and Masters winners and the top three finishers in each age division. Prizes will also be given to the best male and female Christmas costume. All Fun Run/Walk participants will receive a ribbon. The Triple Crown of Running award ceremony will take place at this event. The series will focus on Americana, folk and blues genres featuring performances by regional and local musicians. Springbrook is a beautiful park in the Alcoa community featuring nearby trails, playgrounds and indoor facilities (in case of rain). A perfect setting for outdoor summer concerts! You can relax and enjoy the music, then walk around and visit with some of our onsite vendors like Maryville Farmer’s Market and more. Visit www.parksrec.com for more information. Dates & Time: August 11, September 8 & 22, and October 6 from 6:00-9:00 PM Location: Springbrook Park - will move indoors to Springbrook Rec. Center in the event of inclement weather. Cost: FREE! Concessions will be available for purchase. “TINY TOT” TRIATHLON Bring your “tiny tot” (Ages 3-6) for a fun afternoon of kid-friendly triathlon activities! Event course is modified for this age group level. Preschoolers will run, bike, and get “wet” as they make their way to the finish line where everyone receives a medal. This unique event is recreational (not competitive) and encourages young kids to get out and get active! Bring a bicycle or tricycle (with helmet) and wear tennis shoes and comfortable athletic clothing that can get wet at the end. A family member must assist their child as they make their way through the course. Parents should wear comfortable athletic clothing as well. No swimming will take place, but participants will get “wet” as they make their way towards the finish line. Date: Sunday, September 18 (Inclement Weather Date: September 25) Check-in Time: Between 1:30-2:30 PM as you arrive (no later than 2:30 PM please) Event Time: 2:00-3:00 PM (Groups start every 5 minutes on a first come/first serve basis) Location: Springbrook Pool/Alcoa Duck Pond area Cost: $10.00 if pre-registered at Parks & Rec. or on-line by Friday, Sept. 16 at Noon $15.00 day of event. Wednesday, July 27, 2016 A SPOOKTACULAR EXTRAVAGANZA HALLOWEEN FUN EVENT FOR FAMILIES AND PETS Come join us on Halloween for some fun activities during the Last Friday Night Lights on W. Broadway in downtown Maryville. Activities will include trick or treating at downtown businesses, a pet costume contest, a pumpkin carving contest, a magic show, and much more. Other Charges: $5.00 for pet contest entry HOMETOWN CHRISTMAS EVENTS H.O.M.E. For Christmas November 26th H.O.M.E. Date: November 28 Rain Date: November 29 Time: 6:15 PM Special Olympics Festival of Trees The lawn of the Blount County Courthouse will be illuminated with a display of live Christmas trees of all sizes, colors, and decorative themes. This unique month-long event allows the community to enjoy the festival either by driving by or walking through for a closer look. The official opening of the Festival will take place on the Courthouse lawn and will include music, refreshments, visits with Santa Claus, and hay rides for the children. For information on entering a tree in the festival call 983-9244. Date: December 1 Time: Lighting ceremony 6:30 PM Location: Blount County Courthouse City of Maryville Tree Lighting Enjoy the City of Maryville Tree Lighting ceremony at the pedestrian bridge at Pistol Creek Station leading to the Blount County Library. The program will feature music, refreshments, a candy hunt for Ages 3-12, and visits with Santa Claus in the Library at the end of the event. In case of inclement weather, the entire event will be held at the Library. PARKS & REC • FALL | 5 Just For Kids YOUTH TACKLE FOOTBALL Grasshoppers - Ages 7-8 PeeWees - Ages 8-10 Midgets - Ages 10-12 • Registration is taken in late January and mid-June depending on availability (teams can take up to 35 players). Please watch for team advertisements in the Sports Section of The Daily Times. • Spring practice is held in February and March. • Fall practice begins mid-July and continues until the start of the season. • Jamborees are normally scheduled in earlymid August with the season beginning the following week. The Super Bowl, which concludes the season, is held in late October. YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL This program is available to boys and girls Ages 6-12. Once the season begins, only 1 practice will be held per week on Sundays prior to games. • Participants are evaluated and placed on teams. YOUTH SOCCER FOR BOYS AND GIRLS Parks & Rec. offers two youth soccer seasons each year; in the spring and fall. Two programs are offered: Soccer for Fun for 4 year-olds and Youth Soccer for Ages 5-16 (please see additional information regarding each league below). Soccer for Fun for 4 Year-Olds Soccer for Fun is a fundamental, noncompetitive approach to the game of soccer and a great way to introduce your child to this popular sport. Children are randomly divided into groups and will be involved in drills, along with playing small-sided scrimmage games for one hour on Saturdays for 6 weeks. Shin guards are required. Limited space available! Beginning Dates: Fall season is tentatively scheduled to begin September 10 and will continue for 8 weeks. Spring season is tentatively scheduled to begin April 1and will continue for 6 weeks. Time: Game times will vary from early morning to mid-afternoon. Location: Everett Athletic Complex and Pearson Springs Park Costs: $60.00 includes game jersey + $15.00 for pictures which is totally optional, $18.00 if purchased the day of pictures **Late registration is $5.00 extra and on a space available basis** Fall Registration: July 5 – August 5 (firstcome/first-served until full) Spring Registration: January 23 – February 24 (first-come/first-served until full) Beginning Dates: Fall season is tentatively scheduled to begin September 17. Youth soccer is an excellent way to develop motor skills. Each participant will play in every game. Available to boys and girls 5 years old, this is a great introductory approach to learn the fundamentals of the game. The program meets for one hour on Saturdays for 6 weeks. Registration: October 3 – November 4 (first come/first served until full) Start Date & Season: Season is tentatively scheduled to begin December 3, and is 6 weeks long. Location: Everett Recreation Center Time: 9:00-10:00 AM Cost: $65.00 per child, includes game jersey and a basketball An optional picture package is available for $15.00 extra if purchased at time of registration, $18.00 if purchased day of. **Late registration is $5.00 extra and on a space available basis** Instructors: To be announced. YOUTH BASKETBALL Available to youth Ages 6-17. Every effort is made to educate participants in the game of basketball while having fun. Each participant will play in every game. Registration: October 3 – November 4 (first come/first served until full) Start Date & Season: Season is tentatively scheduled to begin December 3, and will continue for 8 weeks. Location: Everett and Springbrook Recreation Centers and Coulter Grove Intermediate School Time: Game times will vary from early morning to mid-afternoon. Cost: $65.00 per child, includes game jersey An optional picture package is available for $15.00 extra if purchased at time of registration, $18.00 if purchased day of. **Late registration is $5.00 extra and on a space available basis** • Teams will play an 8–game season with games being played on Saturdays. • Children will practice 1 time per week on a rotating schedule, which tentatively begins several weeks prior to the season. • Children are placed on teams through a draft. • Children Ages 6-12 will be placed on an all-boys/all-girls team. Ages 13-16 play co-ed. Children are placed in age groups based on age as of September 1. Wednesday, July 27, 2016 BALLET CLASSES For Ages 3-5 These classes are taught in a relaxed and non-competitive environment. Children will grow with grace and rhythm as they are taught proper placement techniques along with a fun, choreographed routine. Dances are taught to fun edited music that kids love! There will be an end-of-session performance to highlight what they have learned with no extra fees or dance attire necessary.
