KQED Perks
KQED Member Day at SFMOMA —
Free Admission to New Museum on June 23
After a three-year-long expansion, the new San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a must-see San Francisco destination.
The largest museum of its kind in the United States, SFMOMA now
offers free public spaces, free admission for visitors 18 and under,
170,000 square feet of gallery space, and almost an entire floor
devoted to photography.
To celebrate the newly transformed museum, KQED is partnering
with SFMOMA for KQED Member Day! On Thursday, June 23,
KQED members plus one guest are admitted free to
SFMOMA (current KQED MemberCard and valid ID required).
These free, timed tickets must be picked up on-site, cannot be
reserved in advance, and are subject to availability.
Ask/Tell: LGBT Event Focuses on Veterans
Hosted by famed drag queen Landa Lakes, this year’s LGBT celebration
will focus on KQED’s continued work with veterans. Former and active
military personnel will speak about their experiences serving in the
military through song, dance and spoken word — and glitter.
Ask/Tell will include the whole spectrum of the queer population and
will highlight important issues for the LGBT community today.
Wednesday, June 8

Joan Baez celebrated her 75th birthday
on Saturday, January 27, 2016, at
New York’s historic Beacon Theatre.
The special event honored her legendary
50-plus years in music with an intimate,
career-spanning live performance,
including duets with a remarkable array
of superstar artists.
“She has been a mentor, an
inspiration and a role model for anyone
who ever picked up a guitar and wanted
to believe they could do more than
just sing pretty songs,” observed Mary
Chapin Carpenter before the event.

Joining Baez on stage for duets are David Bromberg,
Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter,
Judy Collins, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris,
the Indigo Girls, Damien Rice, Paul Simon,
Mavis Staples, Nano Stern and Richard Thompson.
“She has showed multiple generations
that music can move and inspire
as well as be a force for courage,
solidarity, fellowship and justice.
To be able to celebrate her 75th
birthday with her in New York City is a
dream evening, and I think I will feel 17
again for much of it.”
Indeed, their duet of “Catch the
Wind” – movingly dedicated to Baez’s
late sister Mimi – is a highpoint.
But all the duets reveal a strong
mutual affection between Baez and
her guests, close friends as much as
professional colleagues.
Despite the vastness of the ornate
Beacon Theatre, a former movie
palace from the 1920s, the concert is
captured in intimate close-ups, and
Baez intersperses her vocals with
off-the-cuff reminiscences such as how
she was once tasked with waking an
exhausted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Arts
The new Spark special “Our Creative
Nature,” airing Monday, June 27, at
7:30pm on KQED 9, explores innovative
projects that help to protect and enhance
our environment. See how Bay Area artists,
working in a variety of genres, hope to swing
public opinion behind efforts to improve the
quality of our land, waters and air.
Inspired by her fieldwork in the Arctic
and Antarctic, composer Cheryl Leonard
creates instruments and compositions from
field recordings and found objects like
penguin bones, dried seaweed, and ice. As
she prepares for her performance as part of
the Brower Center’s Vanishing Ice exhibit in
Berkeley, she hopes to use sound to help her
audience make visceral connections to polar
landscapes in need of preservation.
Next, step into the Berkeley studio
of Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello,
designers who are using organic materials
like sand, salt and clay to bring new form
to large-scale 3-D printing. Their creations
are among the first steps toward a whole
new world of sustainable, natural building
materials that could profoundly change
how we design and manufacture everything
from our furniture to the houses we live in.
Then, strap on snowshoes to follow
artist Sonja Hinrichsen as she and dozens
of volunteers make massive snow drawings
in the Sierra. Designed to enhance natural
landscapes around the world, Hinrichsen’s
art is completely ephemeral; when her
creations are complete, it’s a race against
time to photograph them before the next
snowfall covers them up or they simply
melt away.
Finally, take to the stage with
San Francisco choreographer KT Nelson
and the ODC dancers as they perform
a stunning new work, Dead Reckoning.
Scored by former Kronos Quartet cellist
Joan Jeanrenaud, the dance uses a mix of
visual and acoustic motifs — the sound
of a tree falling, for instance — to make
viewers experience the anxiety and urgency
of a world transformed by climate change.

KQED Volunteer Honored Nationally
For the past five years, Ken Blackmon has
arrived at KQED by 6am, seven days a
week, to volunteeer at every KQED Public
Radio pledge drive (that’s three drives a
year for up to two weeks at a stretch).
Given his unflagging commitment,
it comes as no surprise that Ken has been
selected by the National Friends of Public
Broadcasting as the 2016 Outstanding
Public Broadcasting Volunteer.
4
“I believe that an informed citizenry needs
a news source that is as independent as
possible of commercial, agenda-based
influence,” said Ken. “Volunteering at KQED lets
me physically support that idea. Plus I meet likeminded people, make new friends and enjoy the
camaraderie of working for a common cause.”
Volunteers have always been an integral
part of public broadcasting, and KQED is very
grateful to have such a stellar group of people
supporting us during our pledge drives.
Thank you all!

You are invited to join KQED at the second annual
Bay Area Book Festival, presented in partnership with
the San Francisco Chronicle. More than 250 local,
national and international authors are scheduled to
be present at this free, family-friendly festival,
happening June 4 and 5 from 10am to 6pm in
downtown Berkeley.
Meet your favorite authors and discover new ones.
Sherman Alexie, Rebecca Solnit, Colm Tóibín, Richard
Russo, Daniel Clowes, Jacqueline Winspear, and
2016 Pulitzer Prize winners T.J. Stiles and William
Finnegan will be there – plus renowned spoken-word
artist Saul Williams.
In addition to a full weekend of activities for kids
and teenagers, this year’s festival inaugurates a new film
series, running concurrent with the festival and screening
in BAMPFA’s new theater. The series celebrates how the
language of cinema can reflect, even reinvent, the forms
and substances of fiction and poetry.
The festival is free, but reserving your place for
indoor sessions will ensure you can get into the most
popular sessions. The complete schedule and more details

Californians are no strangers to the destructive power
of earthquakes. And it likely comes as no surprise that, on
average, an earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher strikes
somewhere on our planet every year and that
approximately 10,000 people die annually as a result
of quakes.
An online collection of videos and infographics
co-presented by KQED and the California Academy of
Sciences provides a new perspective on one of the most
powerful natural phenomena on Earth.
“We are thrilled to partner with the California
Academy of Sciences to make all of these resources freely
available and easily accessible to the public, educators
and students,” says Andrea Aust, senior manager of
science education at KQED. Drawing from the academy’s
Earthquake exhibit, its gorgeous digital visualizations
and KQED’s multimedia reporting, you’ll learn why
earthquakes happen, how they’ve shaped the Bay Area
and what you can do to prepare for the next big one.

another year when so much attention
was paid to things like how California
apportions delegates to the national
conventions? Or how Republicans in
deeply blue places like Marin and
Berkeley feel about their party’s
candidates? Politics has our attention
riveted, and although much of this year’s
campaign has been at times dispiriting
in its tone, it’s also sure to drive up voter
turnout in both parties — and that’s a
good thing.
One downside to all the attention
being paid to the presidential election
is that it has completely overshadowed
another important election — the race
to replace retiring U.S. Senator Barbara
Boxer. A recent field poll found
Democrats Kamala Harris and Loretta
Sanchez leading Republicans Ron Unz,
Duf Sundheim and Tom Del Becarro,
but 48 percent of voters were undecided.
Fortunately, KQED is providing
plenty of coverage of all those races.

And to think it’s just a warm-up

The last weekend of April, the three
remaining Republicans running for
president trekked to Burlingame to
give their pitch to GOP faithful. To
the disbelief of the gathered delegates,
donors and party officials, it looked like
California’s June 7 primary would finally
matter. A few days later, Donald Trump
won the Indiana primary, Ted Cruz and
John Kasich dropped out, and California’s primary was once again relegated
to less important than states like Ohio,
New Hampshire and Nevada. Trump
still needs California’s delegates to mathematically secure the nomination. He
just won’t have much trouble doing it.
But California could still help
determine how much strength Bernie
Sanders has against Hillary Clinton
going into the Democrats’ July 25
convention in Philadelphia. Both
Sanders and Clinton are taking California seriously and the stakes for both
Democrats are high.
This year’s rock-’em, sock-’em
primary is a teaching moment for high
school students and others interested in
our democracy. Can anyone remember

KQED is pleased to announce that Margaret Agbowo from Berkeley
Technology Academy has been selected as the 2016 PBS LearningMedia Lead
Digital Innovator for the state of California. The Digital Innovator program,
which is in its fourth year, recognizes tech-savvy K–12 educators across the
country who are serving as leaders in the education technology space and
incorporating digital media in classrooms.
Margaret, who has been active in KQED teacher professional learning
groups and workshops for several years, is also an educational leader in the
Bay Area, integrating technology and media in innovative ways to keep her
students engaged and honor their interests.
One of the KQED resources Margaret uses regularly in her classroom
is the KQED Art School video series. “Art School became essential in my
classroom as a way to introduce careers in visual arts,” she explained.
“Art School lets students know that alternatives to ‘regular jobs’ exist. Also,
the ‘Elements of Art’ series is now a feature of my computer arts curriculum
and is applied to students’ digital arts studies.”
Over the course of the 2016–2017 school year, Margaret will become part
of an exclusive Digital Innovators professional learning community designed
to foster new ways of thinking, pave the way for digital media in the classroom
and enrich these innovators’ local teaching communities. In addition, Margaret
and the other Lead Digital Innovators will receive an all-expense paid trip to
Denver, Colorado, to participate in the 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital
Summit and the International Society for Technology in Education conference.
KQED is honored to partner with outstanding educators and PBS
LearningMedia to drive innovation in Bay Area classrooms and beyond.

Forum fans, have you visited the program’s website recently? If not, you’re in for a
pleasant surprise. The site, kqed.org/forum, has been redesigned with an improved
search functionality that makes finding and listening to past Forum shows easier
than ever.
Carlos Gonzalez, product manager for KQED’s Interactive Department and
one of the project leads, explains that a main goal of the redesign was to put
“listening at the front and center of the user experience.”
Forum’s online archive dates back to 2006 — that’s a full decade of interviews
with authors, tastemakers and notable guests, like U.S. Supreme Court Justice
Sonia Sotomayor, University of California President Janet Napolitano and author
Dave Eggers. Whether you want to go back and track a news story through time or
find Michael Kransy’s interview with your favorite novelist, the new site is a great
resource to explore.

The Great Polar Bear Feast is the astonishing
story of an annual natural phenomenon that
occurs in early September on the north slope
of the Arctic. Every year, up to 80 polar bears
gather on the frozen shores to feast on the
hunter-harvested bowhead whale remains.
This extraordinary gathering is highly unusual,
not the least because polar bears are known as
solitary predators.
