Introduction
The Royal Military School of Music Summer
Academy 2012 is open to brass, woodwind and
percussion specialists who have a genuine interest in employment as an Army musician. Applicants should be aged 16 to 24 and perform to at
least ABRSM Grade 7 standard. A packed and
exciting programme will provide musical stimulation, social interaction and an invaluable insight to
a career in Army music. Instrumental tuition will
be provided by some of the top orchestral musicians in the country and, run by our military musical staff, there will be a full programme of workshops, master classes, recitals and rehearsals culminating in an end of course concert. Students
will see professional Army musicians at work: pop/
rock bands, classical ensembles as well as concert and marching bands.
About Us
Renowned as a centre of excellence by
military musicians from around the
globe, Kneller Hall - home of the Royal
Military School of Music (RMSM) - is
located in Twickenham, just 30 minutes
by rail from central London. The school
provides innovative training and whole
life development for musicians serving
in Army bands and caters for orchestral, classical, jazz, rock, pop, brass
and symphonic wind band genres, not
forgetting of course that for which military musicians are famed – marching
bands.
Programme of Events
On page 5 is an example of how the programme for the week will look. We intend to keep students busy so the evenings will be filled with recitals, team building exercises, a careers brief
and social events.
The Staff
The pick of the Army’s best musicians will work alongside our civilian professorial staff
to administer and deliver this course. All are highly skilled experts in their field and
share a passion for music – their contribution is sure to inspire those selected to attend
this course.
Gerald Kirby: He studied timpani and percussion at the
Royal College of Music, and as a student he performed
with The European Community Youth Orchestra and
G.U.S Brass Band. He has done a lot of freelance
work, including performing with London Philharmonic,
London Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and BBC concert. He has also worked with the Orchestra of the
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and The Orchestra
of the English National Opera.
Victoria Soames Samek: Known as one of the most exciting and versatile clarinetists playing in the UK today,
performing internationally as a soloist, in duo recitals and
in numerous chamber ensembles, notably ReedPlay,
FourSight and The Chamber Musicians of London. In
1992 she launched the celebrated CD label Clarinet
Classics and subsequently Saxophone Classics. She is
also Art Director of the Clarinet and Saxophone Performance Course.
Patrick Harrild: Principal Tuba of the London Symphony
Orchestra and a member of London Symphony Brass.
He is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and
Drama where he studied with John Fletcher, the then
principal Tuba of the LSO. Patrick has always had a
parallel career as a teacher and coach, beginning with
the Royal College of Music Junior Department, subsequently he became Professor at the Royal Academy of
Music in 1976 and at the Guildhall School of Drama in
1992, both positions which he continues to hold. More
than half of the UK’s orchestras have former students of
his as their Principal players.
Accommodation
Students will be accommodated in rooms that house 1 – 3 people, which will be allocated
subject to availability. Private bathroom facilities are available in each wing of the accommodation.
Duty of Care
The Army exercises a strict Duty of Care code and our main priority is to ensure that the
Summer Academy provides a safe and happy environment in which students can thrive.
We have an experienced pastoral care team and younger students will be assigned mentors and chaperones who will available on site 24/7.
Costs
And here’s the best bit - the course, accommodation and all meals will be provided free of
charge - we’ll even pay for a train ticket if alternative travel arrangements cannot be made.
