Is the passageway in any way obstructed? Are there unauthorised fixtures along the corridor, such as fixed clothes racks and bicycle racks? Is there bulky refuse along the corridor? If you’ve answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then your common corridor is a potential safety and fire hazard. Be aware of the risks posed by cluttered corridors, and do your part to keep them clear and safe. DON’T WAIT UNTIL DISASTER STRIKES In 2012, there were more than 700 cases of residential fires involving discarded items at common spaces such as corridors, lift lobbies, staircases, and void decks. Photo credit: SCDF In May 2012, two fires broke out at HDB blocks in Marsiling and Toa Payoh, destroying the homes of more than 20 families. It is believed that the clutter at the lift landings—which included bicycles, used mattresses, a dining table, and a refrigerator, among other things—played a major part in fuelling the fires. During an emergency, clutter along common corridors can obstruct the movement of emergency crew and firefighting equipment. Cluttered corridors also make evacuation difficult, which may lead to injuries or even fatalities. Please do not endanger the lives of your family and neighbours by placing your bulky refuse/items at the common corridors. CALL 1800-444-9549 FOR FREE BULKY REFUSE REMOVAL SERVICE.
