TO REGISTER
Program registration is taken at Lakeside Recreation Facility, 1033 South Lake
Storey Road, or by completing the mail-in registration form, with payment, to the
City of Galesburg, Recreation Division, REGISTRATION, P.O. Box 1387,
Galesburg, IL 61402-1387.
Please make checks payable to: City of Galesburg.

Insurance
Individual accident liability insurance is not provided by the City of Galesburg. Large
private parties or special events may be required to show proof of liability insurance.
Program Cancellations and Refunds
Registration is very important for the success of programs. A deadline is given to
determine if our enrollment is sufficient to hold class. If a cancellation occurs, you will
be notified and your payment will be refunded in full. A service fee of 10 % will
be charged for all patron cancellations of programs. Trip refunds will only be
made according to the bus deadline and participant replacement. Allow two to three
weeks to receive your refund.
If you were planning on signing up and we didn’t know that, we may cancel due to
lack of interest. Don’t procrastinate or you may be out of luck. Check the registration
deadline.

FIREARM CONCEALED CARRY ACT
The Firearms Concealed Carry Act, which became state law in July
2013, requires an Illinois Concealed Carry License in order to carry a
firearm in Illinois. The law forbids carrying a concealed weapon into
government buildings, schools and parks. The City of Galesburg
forbids carrying a concealed weapon at all parks and facilities.

10/5-11/9 - Fall Session - Ballroom Dance 101 (Sundays)
Featuring Rumba, Swing, and Argentine Tango
Ballroom dancing is great for any age, and this class will
add a bit of fun and tradition to your life. Rumba is a
slower paced Latin dance which offers a nice contrast for
the energetic East Coast Swing. The Argentine Tango will
offer a dramatic flair. This class will cover all the basics
for beginners and add more challenging moves for the
more experienced dancers. Classes meet on Sundays
from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Gymnasium. A dance
partner is needed for all classes.

10/14 Slow Cooker – Ready Meals Cooking Class (Tuesday)
Having trouble finding time to make a healthy meal
for your family every night of the week? Join Stefanie,
Hy-Vee Dietitian, for an evening full of prepping from
5:00-6:00 p.m. at the Hy-Vee dining area on Henderson
Street. You will be given four recipes to prep during class
that can be thrown into your freezer the same night, and
put in your slow cooker whenever you are in need of an
easy meal. Four to eight hours later, you will have a hot
and ready nutritious dinner for the entire family.
Pre-registration required by Wednesday, October 8, 2014.

Meet the Dance Instructor
Abby Kravis is from Naperville, Illinois and is a senior
at Knox College where she is completing a degree
majoring in Biology, with a double minor in
Neuroscience and Dance. She recently had an
internship at The Conservation Foundation in
Naperville and is ready for another year instructing
Ballroom Dancing.

11/12 Learning How to Cook with Diabetes (Wednesday)
Do you have diabetes, and are confused on the food
you should or should not eat? Maybe you want to
learn more about cooking for a family member or
friend who has diabetes.
Join Hy-Vee Dietitian,
Stefanie Djuric, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the
Henderson Street dining area as she demonstrates a
few go-to recipes that are diabetic-friendly for you to
learn to make and taste. Stefanie will also discuss
ways to make eating less complicated and stressful for
those with diabetes.

Stefanie Djuric is the registered dietitian at the
Hy-Vee supermarket on Henderson Street. She is
a nutrition expert who is passionate about
guiding, motivating and helping others achieve a
balanced, healthy lifestyle.

NOVEMBER
11/16-12/21 Holiday Session –
Intermediate Ballroom Dance (Sundays)
Intermediate Ballroom will meet from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
at Hawthorne Gymnasium. This session will teach
dancers how to identify the music from one dance to
another. Students will be trained in effective leading
and following, and step amagamations. Class will
include five dances: Rumba, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Waltz,
and Merengue. The final class will encompass an
overall class review.
Pre-registration is required by Tuesday, November 11, 2014.

Meet the Dance Instructor
Scott Rasso received his Bachelor’s from Illinois
State and his Master’s from Western Illinois
University. He is a teacher in CUSD #250 and
currently works as an English Language
Development teacher at the elementary level.
He was the choreographer for the awardwinning Singing Streaks show choir for three
years. Scott has danced professionally since
1998: competing in the Pro/Am circuit with his
students, as well as performing, choreographing
and presenting at clinics. His experience and
enthusiasm to teach will liven up the holiday
season.

1/11-2/15 Winter Session - Ballroom Dance (Sundays)
Featuring Foxtrot, Cha-Cha and Tango
Ballroom dance offers a wide variety of styles, which
cover a range of social dance options for all ages.
Foxtrot is a classic slow dance best done to smooth
music by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Bobby
Darin. We speed the class up with the playful ChaCha and dim the lights for a touch of tango. All ages
and skills levels are welcome. Classes meet on
Sundays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Hawthorne
Gymnasium. A dance partner is needed for all
classes.

Featuring Waltz, Charleston and Salsa
This ballroom dance session caters to a wide variety
of interests by mixing styles. We combine the
timeless Waltz with 20’s Charleston and Salsa,
which is popular today in cultures across the world.
This class starts with the basics and adds new
moves as we go to keep things interesting. All ages
and skill levels are welcome. Classes meet on
Sundays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Hawthorne
Gymnasium. A dance partner is needed for all
classes.

REGISTRATION
Registration for Learn-to-Swim classes is held at
Hawthorne Municipal Pool from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on
designated dates in order to ensure accurate placement
in the various levels. No advance registration is taken for
this program due to participant placement in class levels
on the last day of each session.
LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM
Swim instruction is organized to teach participants how
to swim skillfully and safely.
Swimming and water safety skills will be taught to
swimmers of all ages and abilities in a positive aquatic
environment. The program will begin developing positive
attitudes, swimming skills and safe practices in, on and
around the water.

Aquatics - Learn to Swim
Class Levels And Descriptions
Aqua-babies (Parent / Child)
Age: 6 months - approximately 3 years with a parent.
and child will learn together to increase comfort levels
in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such
as arm and leg movements and breath control. This
class is fun filled and will help introduce water safety
concepts, while encouraging a healthy recreational
habit that the entire family can enjoy.
Preschool Aquatics
Age: Approximately 4-5 years old
Safety and swimming readiness will be emphasized
while learning. Skills are age appropriate to help
children achieve success on a regular basis and enjoy
social interactions with other children. Preschool-age
children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming
skills while increasing their comfort level in and around
the water in a positive learning environment. Focus is
on elementary swim skills. Parents are not in the water
during these classes.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons may be arranged for any skill level.
This is a great way to receive more personalized
instruction, or more flexible scheduling for swim
lessons. Lessons offer one-on-one or semi-private
lessons that are 30 minutes long for six days. If
you cannot attend a lesson, you must cancel at
least 24-hours in advance to receive a make-up
day. Classes are scheduled by appointment only.
Fee: $68.00 per person for one child or $102.00 per
session for two children with the same instructor.
Learn-to-Swim
Build Skills and Confidence in Levels I-VI
Age: 6 years through teens
Each level of Learn-to-Swim is designed to help
children advance their skills in aquatic fundamentals,
stroke development, refinement and skill proficiency.
Learn-to-Swim courses are based on a logical, six-level
progression to help swimmers of varying ages and
abilities develop their water safety survival and swim
skills. Water safety topics are included in each level.
CLASS LEVELS and DESCRIPTIONS (LEVEL I-VI)
Level I – Introduction to Water Skills - Participants will
be oriented to the aquatic environment so they may
develop a comfort level with a positive attitude
toward swimming and water safety. Students will
practice facial submersion, floating and basic
swimming and water safety skills.
Level II – Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Fundamental
Aquatic Skills - Gain success with fundamental skills
such as the front and back glide, rotary breathing,
treading water and swimming with a combined
stroke.
Level III – Stroke Development - Stroke Development Build on the basics from Level II with additional
instruction and practice in deeper water.
Skill
objectives are to teach elementary backstroke and
coordinate the front crawl.
Participants will be
introduced to the scissor, dolphin and breaststroke
kicks, while building upon treading water. Survival
floating will be included in the safety topics.
Level IV – Stroke Improvement - Guided practice will
enhance and improve skills to help develop more
confidence in the strokes already learned. Improving
strokes and increasing endurance will be the focus of
this level. Stroke work will include front and back
crawl,
elementary
backstroke,
sidestroke,
breaststroke and butterfly, along with open turns.
Survival swimming will be among the safety skills.
Level V – Stroke Refinement - Provide further
coordination and refinement of strokes. Flip turns,
sculling and surface dives will be introduced.
Level VI – Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Refine all
six strokes in order to swim with ease, efficiency,
power and smoothness over greater distances. Level
VI has “menu” options to help prepare swimmers for
more advanced classes such as Water Safety
Instructor, or other aquatic activities such as
competitive swimming or diving. The options are
fitness swimmer, personal water safety, and
fundamentals of diving.

NEWEST AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARDING PROGRAM
LIFEGUARDING
(American Red Cross)
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training program reflects the most current research for preventing, preparing
and responding to land and aquatic emergencies. Candidates will be trained to act with speed and confidence
in emergency situations, both in and out of the water. Topics include: water rescue skills, surveillance and
recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more. There will be an emphasis on
objective based rescues and team response, with focus on using an AED as soon as possible. Lifeguard
candidates that successfully complete the course will receive a 2 year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/
CPR/AED and Waterfront Skills. An add-on Waterfront module will be included for individuals that may be
working in non-surf, open-water areas, such as with the City of Galesburg, Oak Run, and Little John.
*Passing the skills and written tests are an essential part of certification.

Lifeguard Training Pre-requisite Skills:
Participants must pass the entire swimming test on the
first day to continue in the class.
Swim Test Pre-requisite:
1) Must be a minimum of 15 years of age.
(Please bring proof of your age to the first class.)
2) Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath
control and rhythmic breathing.
(Additional 250 yards for Waterfront.)
3) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
4) Start in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10
feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface,
swim 20 yards on back to the starting point with the
brick in both hands and exit the water without using a
ladder or steps within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
5) Swim 5 yards and retrieve 3 dive rings form the
bottom, resurface and swim 5 yards.
(Waterfront only.)

Lifeguard Review Re-Certif ication Course
Lifeguard Training Review provides an opportunity to review the content to optimize successful completion.
Participants must present proof of a valid, and current, certification.
Participants must bring their own personal CPR pocket mask, whistle and a pencil to the training session. You may
contact the American Red Cross office if you need to purchase a pocket mask. Training will include water rescue,
first aid, CPR, AED skills and written tests. You are not registered until paid. Space is limited to keep the class
manageable. Upon successful completion participants will receive American Red Cross certifications, valid for 2
years.
Time: 9:00 a.m. - Saturday Classes / 1:00 p.m. - Sunday Class

Lifeguarding Instructor Course
This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and
evaluate the progress of candidates in a professional level course.
Participants will learn to instruct American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills,
Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency
Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens. Pre-registration is required in order to receive the proper class textbooks and

Lifeguarding Instructor Pre-requisites:
1) Must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
2) Possess a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED or an equivalent certificate
from another approved organization.
3) Successfully complete an on-line session which consists of orientation to the American Red Cross, Orientation to the
Lifeguarding Instructor course, and Lifeguarding Instructor Pre-course exam.
4) Successfully complete the pre-course session.
5) Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual and Lifeguarding Manual prior to entering the first regular session of

Swim during a school day out during Knox County
Teacher Institute Day. This is your chance to explore
Hawthorne Municipal Pool for fall and winter
adventures. Enjoy the aquatic Wibit “mountain” for
more fun.

2/16 - President’s Day Swim (Monday)
Take on the “mountain” of challenge or try crossing the
“bridge” on the Wibit, giant inflatable obstacle course
for all ages. There will be open swimming and the
waterslide for this special swim.

12/22 - Holiday Kick-Off (Monday)
Join the Hawthorne Municipal Pool for a holiday kickoff to winter break. The pool will be open with the
WiBit, diving board, waterslide and open swimming
all afternoon.

Winter Break Splash Bash (Friday/Monday)
Splash over to Hawthorne Municipal Pool during
winter break for an afternoon of fun. The giant aquatic
Wibit will add a fun and challenging sporting activity

Registration will be taken at Lakeside Recreation Facility
for a 4th-8th grade recreational volleyball league for
Galesburg and the surrounding area teams. All Galesburg
girls must register through the Galesburg Recreation
Division. Area teams will register as a team, with their
coach, from their community/schools. This will be an
instructional league with an equal playing time directive.
No previous volleyball experience is required. Basic
fundamentals of volleyball will be taught. The teams will
then build on these skills. Shirts will be provided for each
team. Participants should provide their own shorts, knee
pads, and appropriate shoes. Host sites are welcome, with
matches being played at Lakeside Recreation Facility and
Hawthorne Gym.

Prior to Lakeside’s purchase by the City in 1990, Lakeside Recreation Facility was a private swimming and tennis Club.
Subsequent to its purchase, the city reorganized by developing major Capital Improvements to the facilities for use by the
general public. While providing Galesburg’s only public Water Park, Lakeside’s main building provides valuable, indoor
recreational space. This capability provides an added dimension to the services the City of Galesburg Recreation Division
is able to provide, especially in the winter months.
Lakeside Recreation Facility includes the Recreation Administrative offices, lobby area, men’s/women’s locker rooms, Indoor Batting Cage, two Multi-Purpose area courts for various sporting activities and four in-door hard surface tennis

Nature Programs are offered the Second Saturday
of each month during fall and winter 2014-2015.
Lakeside Nature Center
Lakeside Nature Center has continued to expand and
grow with the collaboration of many partners to help
build Galesburg’s only Nature Center.
A habitat
garden was expanded, thanks to a grant from the
Galesburg Community Foundation and Ronald
McDonald’s House Charities, and designed by Brian
Davidson of Unique Landscaping. These grants also
provided initial supplies for the Nature Center. Staff
is asking for the community to support our endeavor
to bring the love of nature and the out-of-doors to
Galesburg and the
surrounding area.

10/11 Pumpkins and Nature
Stop by the Lakeside Nature Center for “Fall Fun”.
There will be a nature hike to view the trees and leaves
as they change color. Youth can pick out a pumpkin,
thanks to Huizenga Family Farm and Monsanto, from
the Lakeside Nature Center “pumpkin patch” to
decorate and take home. There will also be a
campfire to roast your own pumpkin seeds.

11/8 People and Animals from Illinois Past
Discover the relationship with nature and the pre-historic
mammals and Native Americans from the past. Stations
will be set up for participants to enjoy good “old
fashioned” activities such as grinding corn using a
mortar and pestle and making corn husk dolls.

12/13 Tracks, Scat and Habitat
Look for tracks and other signs of life left behind from

Owl Prowl
Date: February 21, 2015
Time: 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Join Master Naturalist, Jennie Bunde, on a
moonlit walk through the woods to see Who’s
Whooooo of the night flight predators. Search
for owls and listen to fascinating night sounds.
Adults should bring flashlights. Children must
be accompanied by an adult.

2/14 Whoooo Do You Love
Visit the Lakeside Nature Center and have fun learning
about owls. Participants that sign up will have fun
dissecting owl pellets and learning owl bird calls. Use
analysis and identification to determine the individual
bones structures. Learn about the food chain and the
importance of all parts of the food chain/web. If you
want, venture out for a winter hike. Then register and
prepare for a real Owl Prowl later in the week.

Bird lovers can meet at 7:30

MEET THE NATURE STAFF
Master Naturalist – Jennie Bunde
Jennie Bunde is the Galesburg Recreation Division’s
Master Naturalist.
She has her Masters in
Conservation Biology and provides tremendous
experience from which everyone can benefit. Jennie
has assisted with nature camps/programs and is a
facilitator for Project WILD; Project Learning Tree and
the Prairie School Project. She is also a Certified
Interpretive Guide.
Nature Leaders-Darla Krejci
Darla Krejci has a background in Elementary
Education. She has worked as a Naturalist at
Pilcher Park Nature Center in Joliet and is an
instructor for nature themed and other classes at
Carl Sandburg College’s Kids on Campus for
several years.
Camp Coordinator – Cindy Barshinger
Cindy Barshinger received her degree in Early
Childhood form Illinois State University. She has 30
years of experience in the educational field and is
currently teaching in the Bright Futures Pre-K program.
Cindy is an inspiration to the youth, and adults, in our
community. Cindy works closely with the camp staff to
provide an excellent experience for our Nature Camp
participants. This past summer she had the opportunity
to attend the Ron Clark Academy.
Biologist – Paul Skrade
Paul Skrade has a PhD in Ecology and
Evolutionary Biology form Iowa State University.
He is now serving as a visiting Professor of
Biology at Knox College. Paul is an enthusiastic
environmentalist who shares a love of nature with
his family, and promotes getting outside activities.

Making a Difference in the Lives of our Youth
OCTOBER
10/10 Babysitting Clinic (Friday)
Youth, age 11-15, have the opportunity to learn
babysitting skills for children of all ages. Topics
covered include first aid, toy and game selection for
various ages, identification of common safety hazards,
making responsible decisions, accident prevention and
much more. A certified American Red Cross Instructor
teaches the class and a certificate will be awarded
upon completion. All required materials, including a
handbook and an emergency reference guide are
included in the fee. (Please bring a pen and / or
pencil with you to class.) The clinic will meet at the
American Red Cross, 143 East Main Street, from 9:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Pre-registration is needed by Friday,
October 3, 2014.

Hawthorne Pool is open for TEENS ONLY during Winter
Break on New Year’s Eve for an afternoon of splashing,
swimming and fun from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Teen Inner Tube
Water Polo is a super fun variation of water polo. No
experience is needed. All you need to do is sit on the
tube and paddle, pass and shoot the ball toward the goal
of the opposing team. Just be sure you don’t hold the ball
too long as you may get tipped over.

Feel the fear of Fright Fest at Six Flags Great America on Columbus Day. There will be
a variety of haunted entertainment, along with your favorite rides and attractions. Test
your nerve and walk through the “Mausoleum of Terror”, “Massacre Medical Center”
and fear the “Wicked Woods”. There are also shows including “Love at First Fright”
and “Fantome”. Watch out, there could be something lurking around every corner.
Bring extra money for food and souvenirs. The bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from Lakeside
Recreation Facility and will return around 9:30 p.m.

drink and venue. Holiday themed windows at Macy’s on State
Street is always a fun side stop as well. Participants will be on their

FEBRUARY 2/16 (Monday)
Join the fun on the slopes for an all-day skiing and snowboarding trip to Chestnut
Mountain in Galena, Illinois. This adventure is open to 6th-12th Grade. Lessons
are included for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. All participants will be
required to check in with chaperones at designated times throughout the
evening. Please indicate on the registration form if
you need a ski or snowboard rental, or if you are
bringing your own equipment. Extra money is
needed for snacks, lunch and dinner. Participants
may rent a helmet for an additional $6.00.

lunch and open swim until the next program at
Hawthorne Pool in the afternoon. Bring your own

Kids Kitchen Delights
Get ready for a program that lets you experience
some of the best treats in Galesburg. Perfect for

and the importance of eating balanced meals all year
long from 4:00-5:00 a.m. Everyone will participate in
making four healthy recipes that they can take home to
make for mom and dad and show off their new cooking
skills

Scavenger Hunt␣ (Monday)
Hey kids, become a food explorer at

scavenger hunt in search of the
healthiest foods in the grocery store
using the NuVal nutrition score of
each food. Everyone will win the ultimate prize of
learning how to build, and taste, their own healthy
snacks at the end of the scavenger hunt.
