We have recently kicked off a renovation project and supporting community capital campaign at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital. The Cornerstone of Care Campaign seeks to raise $1.5 million for the community in support of the project at Soldiers & Sailors that will relocate Cardiac Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy to a new center on the ground floor, move the Peppermint Parlor to the ground floor, add a new main entrance, and expand the Emergency Department. This work has already begun and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009. In Geneva, the new Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing will admit its first class in the Fall of 2008. The College of Nursing will operate on a traditional academic year starting in September and ending in May. At the end of the two-year program, graduates will be awarded an Associate Degree in Applied Science with a major in nursing by the College of Nursing. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) may apply to the College of Nursing for advanced standing and can complete the program within three semesters. As with most new initiatives, these projects rely on community support to become a reality. Peppermint Parlor Funding The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has committed $30,000 over the next three years to support the construction of the new Peppermint Parlor in the enhanced lobby of S&S. To date, individual volunteers and auxiliary members have already personally pledged an additional $7,660 toward this effort. The original Peppermint Parlor, which opened in 1967, and is named for the red and white striped aprons that were worn by volunteers, celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2007. The current Parlor is located on the 1st floor of Soldiers & Sailors, and will move to the ground floor as part of the renovation, making it accessible to an increased number of visitors. Construction of the new Peppermint parlor will take place in Phase 2 of the project. Awards and Scholarships The following awards and scholarship were given in 2007 through the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital Fund: • The Kitty Wigsten Memorial Scholarship – presented annually to a graduating senior or seniors of Penn Yan Academy who are pursuing a career in health care. The recipient in 2007 was Brian Murphy. • The John D. The 2007 recipient was Nutritional Services to help fund their Fire Side Inn dining program at the Homestead. This program was developed to be able to provide an upscale, private dining service for residents and their families to celebrate special occasions. Spring 2008 • The Gary Garverick Memorial Award – to support emergency medical services provided by Soldiers & Sailors or related agencies within Yates County. The 2007 recipient was the Advanced Life Support Response Unit at Soldiers & Sailors to provide staff and volunteers access to continued on-line education resources. • The Solera Scholarship – established in memory Residents of the Homestead and their families enjoy of Joseph Jakubowicz, a fine dining experience at The Fire Side Inn. a former employee of Dundee Central School, by members of his family and the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. The Solera Scholarship is awarded to a Dundee Central School graduate pursuing a career in health care. The current recipient is Kathleen Huey. PHASE I of Soldiers • Relocation of Therapy and • Hospital pharmacy moves & Sailors Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation from Medical Arts Building Hospital project Departments into the hospital begins 4 On December 20, 2007, the Penn Yan Area Volunteer Ambulance Corp. gave $10,000 to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospitalto help construct a workspace within the S&SEmergency Department for local EMS personnel while on duty at the hospital. This new space is part of the multi-phase $9 million project at S&S which began in March 2008. The project will take approximately 2 years to complete and will result in relocation of the Physical Therapy and Cardiac Rehab programs to the main floor of the hospital, a new main entrance, a new lobby, reconfigured parking areas, a private registration area and renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department. • Parking reconfigured 2007 Donor Report for Finger Lakes Health Foundation SOLDIERS & SAILORS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FUND 2007 DONORS The 2007 Annual Fund received $153,243 from 385 donors. During mid-year, The Cornerstone of Care Campaign, an initiative designed to support a major construction-renovation project at the Hospital, began. Gifts received after August 1, totaling $47,915, were designated as campaign income, unless they were contributed to support departments that are not involved in the construction-renovation project. On October 8, 2007 the Geneva School District Universal Pre-Kindergarten Agencies (including Geneva General Child Care 31 teachers attended representing 6 different area early education agencies. Work now has expanded into education and interaction with parents and families on incorporating these initiatives into life at home.
