ARF’s Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic
ARF is expanding affordable spay/neuter services! A custom designed Mobile
Spay/Neuter Clinic will soon be completed and on its way across country to ARF.
Our new Mobile Clinic will allow us to spay and neuter more local dogs and cats,
help pet guardians in underserved areas in Contra Costa County access spay/
neuter services, and deliver needed pet wellness clinics to veterans as part of our
Pets for Vets program. Sponsorship of ARF’s Mobile Clinic will ensure stronger

A Message from the Executive Director
Rescued cats from Butte Fire on the way to ARF
I
approached the kennels with caution, curious as to what
they would reveal as I peered around the corner. One
gentleman was busy tending to an older Mastiff mix
with a cage card, “I am a grumpy grandpa, staff only.” The
man stood up when he saw me, and I introduced myself.
“Aren’t you from Walnut Creek?” he asked. “Why are you all
the way out here?.” The Butte Fire in Northern California
had destroyed more than 70,000 acres and we witnessed
the devastation first hand on our 150+ mile approach. “We
came to help, to show our support. We want you to know
you are not alone in this tragedy.” He extended his hand and
we shook, as his eyes welled up. “Thank you. Thank you for
caring.”

Our days are rarely typical, but our focus is consistent
as we embrace ARF’s mission of “People Rescuing Animals…
Animals Rescuing People®.” ARF was able to rehome
more than 2,600 pets last year, an all-time record, and our
innovative programs brought love to 319,903 people in
need. The Pets for Vets program we launched in 2012 has
since placed more than 300 shelter animals with veterans for
invaluable emotional support.
Whether the day brings deployment, rescue runs, or Pet
Hug Pack visits, we are invigorated to say “yes” and respond.
We never stop looking for ways to improve what we can do
for the animals and communities who need us. Our spay/
neuter clinic is one of only two affordable cost clinics in the
county, and our sought-after sterilization services book up
weeks in advance, delaying surgery and potentially resulting
in litters. We purchased a mobile spay/neuter clinic, and as
we gain financial momentum, we will target regions with a
high surrender rate and low-income residents who want to
do the right thing, but cannot access services. The mobile
clinic will also provide health and pet wellness checks for VA
veterans.

Calaveras Humane Society’s original message stated: “We
have 35 dogs in need of temporary shelter and only 17
crates” and we responded in force, alongside members
of the community. ARF’s staff and volunteer team split up
to assess the cats on property, and then travel to the dog
holding at Calaveras County Fairgrounds. With the team in
place, I departed with the excess items not need for the Butte
Fire victims, and drove another 150 miles west to the Valley
Fire. The ARF team rescued 19 pets who had been living in the shelter prior to the fire, in order to make room for
resident pets displaced. The Valley Fire destruction received
similar ARF support and we delivered fluids, antibiotics, burn
cream, bandages, and other items to Middletown Veterinary

Unlike most people, Michael didn’t come to ARF look-

assignment to capture a few photos of the staff and grounds.
As he was looking around and getting acquainted, a small,
scruffy black dog caught his eye. By the end of the day, Michael was back at ARF with a leash and collar and brought
Sparky home. Now Sparky’s a picture-perfect subject for her
dad, and has brought joy to her new home. “Sparky is a wonderful companion and goes everywhere with me. She loves to
go on my photoshoots and when I pick up my camera gear she
really gets excited. The other wonderful trait she has is getting
along with our other dog, Isaac. Seems like they have been
buddies forever.”

Pets for Vets - Billy and Noni
Billy, a veteran, experienced disruptive night terrors
during his transition back to civilian life after combat. When he
adopted Noni, a beautiful Catahoula mix from ARF, her gentle,
loving demeanor put him at ease right away. Noni was slightly
timid in new situations, but she and Billy had an immediate and
powerful connection. He knew it was just the right match when,
on her first night at home, she instinctively licked Billy’s face to
wake him from his nightmares. Support ARF’s Pets for Vets

1995: ARF Emergency Medical Fund® established
Inspired by calls they received from the community, ARF
volunteers Bev Greenbaum, Dorothy Bullard, Elvira Clark, Enid
Schlichtman, and Dolores McCoskey - the “EMF Ladies” - began
making and selling crafts to raise dollars to help caregivers
who couldn’t afford veterinary care.
The ARF Emergency Medical Fund® was formed in 1995, and is
funded by the ARF Thrift Store and generous donations from
the public. It has provided thousands of qualifying residents
of Contra Costa County with affordable, high-quality, nonemergency veterinary care, keeping their pets at home and out
of overcrowded shelters.

the realization that compassion for animals is
learned at a young age. ARF All Stars® included
classroom lessons delivered to schools in Contra
Costa County, and quickly grew to include
downloadable lessons for educators nationwide.
ARF’s variety of innovative inbound and outbound
humane education programs now include dog
bite prevention, tours of ARF’s Learning Center,
Camp ARF, birthday parties, service learning,
youth volunteering, and more. These programs
provide children with opportunities to experience
the unfailing friendship of animals and empower
kids to make a difference.

Early on, ARF discovered the power of the
unconditional love of a pet in healing lonely
hearts and providing health benefits. ARF
originally partnered with the Friendship
Foundation and Oakland Dog Training Club,
and later established what was originally known
as the Visiting Animal Program (VAP) to make
pet visits to local people in need of comfort.
Now known as the Pet Hug Pack®, a national
model for visiting animal team programs,
ARF’s nearly 200 pet/handler teams spread
pet-assisted comfort to hundreds of thousands
of people in hospitals, rehabilitation centers,
schools, adult day care facilities, and more.

2012: ARF creates Pets for Vets program
ARF began waiving adoption fees for any active
military or veteran adopting an ARF animal in 2012 as
the Military & Veterans Pet Adoption Program (MVP).
ARF’s board soon learned many challenges faced by
veterans returning from combat could be alleviated by
adopting a shelter animal. Emotional support animals
help their veterans cope with isolation and provide
them with stability and a reason to leave the house.
ARF partnered with the VA and created Pets for Vets,
which has placed more than 300 pets with veterans
since its inception and provides free training and
assistance in caring for their pets on referral.

On 5/10/2007, our lives changed
forever as we adopted Klondike from you.
Maria and I were new to the area, needed a
friend, protection and love...and boy did we
get all three and much much more, from
our girl, who we renamed Kali. Neither one
of us had ever had a dog before, but I doubt
we will ever go very long without having
a rescue dog in our home ever again - all
because of the adoption of Kali.
It is with incredible sadness, I am
writing to you to tell you that Kali had to be
put down this past Monday because of liver
cancer. She was her vibrant, smiling, frisbeeplaying self until her last 2 days. Kali never
ever complained, not until 2 days before she
died, and even then, she refused to have an
accident and didn’t want to bother us when
she had to go outside every 2 hours.
I am writing not to sadden you, but
to thank you...the foundation, all of the
volunteers, and anyone else involved in your
organization. Yes we rescued Kali from shelter
life, but she gave us much more than we could
ever have given her, I’m sure of that. And
it was all possible because of you. We know
when we eventually aren’t so sad without our
Kali girl in the house, we will adopt again and we will always adopt a rescue.
Thank you for opening our eyes and
hearts to such a wonderful gift - pet rescue.
