What is a Junior Livestock and Dairy Auction?
The 2016 Junior Livestock and Dairy Milk Quality (Miss Q) and Dairy Honors Auction will be held at the Jefferson County Fair on
Saturday, July 9th. It is the culmination of a year’s project activities for 4-H and FFA members. As a learning and business
venture, these young men and women have selected, fed and groomed a steer, lamb, hog, or dairy cow. Support of the auction
provides recognition and incentive for young adults to earn college funds, buy more animals, and receive practical training in
business. Buyers can support a young person in their community by purchasing an animal or providing youth with a monetary
donation.
What will be Offered?
Quality animals that have been raised as educational projects by 4-H and FFA Jefferson County youth. All of the animals sold will
meet quality grade and weight requirements or in the case of dairy have been selected for their outstanding characteristics. The
industry standards and the Meat Animal Project Committee determine these requirements. The youth have been trained in Meat
Animal Quality Assurance, selection, feeding and health, as well as, fitting and showing techniques. Many have also participated
in local club project meetings and other training opportunities outside of Jefferson County.
How Do I Participate?

Buyer Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.
Sale begins at 1:00 p.m.
Cash, checks, and credit cards will be
accepted for payment.
After purchasing … now what?
When you make a purchase as part of the Dairy Honors / Miss Q Dairy Auction you are making a donation to the youth member
and as the buyer you receive a special dairy related item. You do not have the option to purchase the animal.
When you purchase a beef, sheep, or pig you have two options:
1. You may buy the animal outright. You will purchase the animal for the live weight price at the end of bidding. The Meat
Animal Project Committee takes your animal to one of the local processing plants of your choice; Country Meat Cutters,
Detjen’s, Pernat’s, River’s Edge, Wilson Meats, Johnstown Foods or Sorg’s Quality Meats. You need to let the clerks know
where your animal will be going. Animals that are purchased this way will have a processing fee from the processor.
2. You may bid for an “Over Market Bonus”. You will notice that in the sale catalog there is a market price for each steer, lamb
or hog. “Over Market Bonus” is the gavel price minus the market price. This is the amount of the donation that you would
make to the youth. For instance if you purchase a 1,000 lb. steer at $1.10 per pound and the market price is $1.00 per lb.,
you pay the youth a .10 per lb., or in this case $100.00. The youth retains ownership of the animal.
Show Rights
Some exhibitors may ask buyers for “show rights” to exhibit their meat animals at the Wisconsin State Fair. We believe that
exhibiting at a higher level is a very positive educational opportunity for youth and we hope that you will support exhibitors’
requests to go on to a larger show. You as the buyer will work with the project member to decide how the purchase will be
handled at a later date. If the animal is in the Governor’s Auction at State Fair, the market price from the Jefferson County Fair
MAP sale is returned to the buyer.

**NEW THIS YEAR**
The Jefferson County Meat Animal Project has teamed up
with the Jefferson County Dairy Committee to
incorporate the Miss Q (Milk Quality) and Dairy Honors
Auction into the Meat Animal Auction.
Ten Dairy Youth exhibitors will be added to the sale this
year. These youth will be selling their honors, NOT the
cow of heifer they bring in the ring. The sale will be
straight gavel price, meaning the amount you bid per lot
(not per pound) will go to the youth. The buyer does not
have the option to purchase the animal, but will receive a
small dairy item in appreciattion of their donation.
The following youth exhibitors
will be selling: 4 Top Milk Quality,
Supreme Cow and Heifer, Best
Bred and Owned Cow and Heifer,
Supreme Showman, and One
Radom Lottery Winner.
