Sign-Up for other City Communications Solano County Fair, Now - August 2 The 66th Annual Solano County Fair is coming to town with more fun for people of all ages! Come explore competitive exhibits, livestock shows, and the midway with Butler Amusements rides and games of skill. There will also be a Family Fun Zone with a petting zoo, pony rides, and interactive games for everyone to play. Concerts now through Saturday start at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 7:00 p.m., and are free with the price of ADMISSION . Performances by Con-Funk-Shun and Journey Revisited are just two of the main concert events being held. Fair hours and admission prices can be found online here. The Mad Hatter Parade will be the center of attention at the Solano County Fair on Friday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m. (Tea Time). The parade will be nearly three blocks long with many of the favorite Wonderland characters and mobiles: the Cheshire Cat, Lion King, Queen of HEARTS , the Duchess, and the Mad Hatter, along with the White Rabbit, mouse and Tea Cup. The full cast will all come out of the Rabbit Hole and onto the Fairgrounds at Tea Time. The parade will also include the guest marching band The Ophir Prison Marching Band & Temperance Society. This band consists of a 25-50 piece ensemble with pep band type instrumentation woodwinds, brass, and percussion in their "prison blues" donning the Mad Hatter's hats. Biodanza- The Dance of Life New to Vallejo, Biodanza is a heart-centered system of SELF-DEVELOPMENT that uses music, movement and positive feelings to deepen selfawareness. Utilizing aspects of difference sciences such as biology, shamanism and psychology, Biodanza is much more than a dance class. Biodanza is the poetry of human encounter. No choreography necessary as individuals feel the music and move as such. Biodanza EXERCISES provide opportunities for intense experiences of being alive in the moment. Each class is a journey resulting in a greater capacity to connect with oneself and others Classes are ongoing every Tuesday evening from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at the Artiszen Cultural Art Center located at 337 Georgia Street. The fees are based on a sliding scale of $15.00 to $25.00 for drop-ins or a monthly pass for $55.00 to $80.00. The second class is free and one additional class is free when regular attendees bring new people to Biodanza! No dance experience necessary; all FITNESS levels welcome. Loose, comfortable clothing in encouraged. Vallejo Relay for Life, August 1 The American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement is the world's largest fundraising event to end cancer, uniting communities across the globe to finish the fight. Dollars raised by more than four million Relay participants in more than 20 countries help the American Cancer Society save lives by supporting education and prevention efforts, funding groundbreaking cancer research, and providing free information and services for people with cancer. St. Patrick/St. Vincent High School will be hosting the Vallejo Relay for Life event. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. on August 1 and will run through 10:00 a.m. on August 2. Relay for life is a family-friendly, alcohol and tobacco-free event. First Saturdays Hosted by GVRD, August 1 First Saturdays, hiking and nature activities from Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD). Over the course of the summer, GVRD will be leading low-impact hikes at 4 different locations every first Saturday of each month. GVRD is also partnering with Healthy Parks Healthy People Bay Area, a group that is decided to take charge and lead events like this all over the Bay Area. Paper Shredding Event, August 15 The City of Vallejo is working in conjunction with VALCORE Recycling, located at 38 Sheridan Street, to host Confidential Paper Shredding events on the third Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. The next event schedule to take place August 15 and upcoming dates include: September 19, October 17, November 21 and December 19. The program costs $.50 per pound ($10.00 minimum charge) with a 100 pound maximum. Payments can be made with cash or check only. This Saturday, August 1, participants will enjoy a low impact hike at Blue Rock Springs led by a knowledgeable representative. Meeting time is 9 a.m.,with pre-registration preferred. National Night out, August 4 National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer places to live. Together, we are making that happen. Residents can watch as their confidential documents are shredded via a monitor on the truck. Properly disposing of confidential documents and ensuring that all paper is recycled is important. Each year, people dispose of confidential documents in the trash without considering the dangers of identity theft. There are about 9 million victims of identity theft each year, therefore Valcore recycling and the City of Vallejo want to provide residents and businesses with an opportunity to shred all of their confidential documents and recycle the paper in the process The mission of VALCORE Recycling is to promote recycling, composting and reuse opportunities in our community. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community, providing a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Neighborhoods across the nation host block parties, festivals, cookouts and other various community events with safety demonstrations, visits from emergency personnel and exhibits. National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, August 4. Police, Fire and other City Personnel will be visiting block parties from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. City of Vallejo neighborhoods are encouraged to register as soon as possible by contacting Tina Encarnacion via email or phone at (707) 651-7184. The first 30 Neighborhoods will qualify for a free dumpster. If Vallejo residents want to close off a block, the neighborhood leader will need to fill out an application. The Voltones at Blue Rock Springs Park, August 8 For the month of August, the GVRD "Art & Concerts in the Park" will feature the Voltones. The monthly event promotes community growth through art and live music. Split into 4 concert dates, the concerts have been held at various parks in Vallejo from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. In addition to live music and local art displays, GVRD is providing interactive art activities for families and children. Vallejo Outreach, August 8 Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum - Free Family Day, August 15 XVallejo Naval and Historical Museum will be hosting a Free Family Day from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on August 15. Families can visit and learn the diverse history of Vallejo. The museum is home to more than 35,000 historic photos of Vallejo and Mare Island. The museum features five galleries of exhibits including the history of Vallejo, women's contributions to the City, the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame, and Mare Island and U.S. Naval history, located in the City's old City Hall at 734 Marin Street For more information, call (707) 643-0077 or visit www.vallejomuseum.org. Vallejo Outreach invites the community to the Vallejo waterfront at Service Club Park adjacent to the Ferry Building on August 8th beginning at 11:00 a.m. As in the past, this event will feature an Air Park and several kids' carnival games, lunch for all, backpacks for elementary age children, free haircuts, health and social service booths, and grocery give away- all free of cost to the community. All are welcome to attend and enjoy a day of celebrating community. Fore more information visit the Vallejo Outreach website here. 2nd 9 annual Uncorked Event, August The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano invites you to enjoy an afternoon for adults in the picturesque Green Valley vineyard region at the 2nd Annual Uncorked event on August 9 from 1:00 to 4:00pm. GV Cellars, located at 1635 Mason Road in Fairfield, hosts this unique and fun-filled event. The fine wines of GV Cellars will be showcased along with delectable treats by caterer, Magpies. The popular local cover band, Westbound 80, will keep the atmosphere lively. Not only will you be delighting your senses, you will also be helping fight local hunger. This year's Uncorked will benefit the Food Bank's School Pantry Program which provides nutritious, nonperishable food to high school students attending qualified low-income schools. "The event was such a hit last year that we decided to make it an annual affair," states Food Bank Executive Director, Larry Sly. "The attendees truly had a great time and the Food Bank raised money to help feed the 1 in 8 people in our community who are food insecure. This year we look forward to building upon last year's success." Tickets are $40.00 per person and can be purchased online a here through August 7. The Food Bank serves residents of Contra Costa and Solano counties, including children and seniors. Through a network of 180 partner agencies and six direct service programs, the Food Bank serves approximately 188,000 each month. Project Clean Sweep, August 15 The Loma Vista Farm will be holding a Volunteer Workday andPotluck from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on August 15. There will be a variety of farm and garden projects that need helping hands. Participants are encouraged to bring work gloves, protective eye wear, a refillable water bottle and any other tools that could be helpful to a hard day's work. Loma Vista Farm will supply all the necessary materials to complete the projects that are scheduled during the day. The potluck is open to any and all that want to contribute and share a meal with your fellow volunteers at the end of the work day. For additional information, contact Shelee at (707) 812-0546. Shakespeare in the Park featuring Macbeth, August 15 Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park, in partnership with the Greater Vallejo Recreation District, presents Macbeth by William Shakespeare on August 14 and 15. This fundraiser performance is directed by Clinton Vidal and will take place at the Mare Shoreline Heritage Preserve, located on 1595 Railroad Avenue. The shows begins at 8:00 p.m. and admission is $15.00 at the door. Solano Community College 70th Anniversary Gala, August 21 Solano Commuity College will be celebrating its 70 years of educational excellence with a Benefit Gala on Friday, August 21. The Gala will begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, followed by a dinner and program at 7:30 p.m., and a silent auction beginning at 8:30 p.m. Dancing and desserts will follow the conclusion of the auction. All proceeds will benefit the SCC Educational Foundation. " Scott Zimmerman, associate director of business and operations support for Genentech, and Solano College biomanufacturing professor Jim DeKloe will offer the keynote addresses. The gala will take place in the Barbara Jones Building at Solano College's center in Vacaville, located at 2001 N. Village Parkway. Nights at the Empress Vallejo Jazz Series- The Chuck Mackinnon "Mactet" - August 2 Trumpeter Chuck MacKinnon's insatiable quest for musical adventure has propelled him into projects along a wide range of jazz styles, from straight-ahead to soul/jazz to improvised psychedelic electronica. MacKinnon is a San Francisco native who came of age performing on the local jazz scene. MacKinnon has performed around the world with star performers including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Cab Calloway Orchestra, Joe Henderson and many others. MacKinnon's very latest project, The Chuck MacKinnon "Mactet", an all-acoustic venture, is the culmination of his musical career and features his three horn writing. Show starts at 5:00 pm, tickets are $7.50 and available online here. Soulshine featuring Larry James August 12 Soul, Funk, and Rhythm & Blues Invitational Pro-Jam with the Groovemasters featuring Larry James. Throughout much of the 1990s, Larry James toured with the Johnny Otis Band. He also fronted his own group, The Larry James Band, from the mid 1990s until 2005. Larry played regularly with the late great Ted Butler, as well as with such legendary performers as Beverly Stoval and Johnny Talbot. The Groovemasters are Wilson Brooks, Charles Spikes, Lorenzo Hawkins, and Timm Walker. Show starts at 7:00 pm, tickets are $10.00 and available online here. Stratify, August 15 Stratify is comprised of 8 very talented musicians from the Bay Area who are focused strictly on the Smooth Jazz genre. The band features a full rhythm section, three-piece horn section and percussion covering some of the most popular funk & smooth jazz artist of today and yesterday. Stratify Smooth Jazz delivers a unique show that connects with the audience as soon as they hit the stage. Stratify brings uptempo smooth grooves for some serious dancing! Kiesah Wright - Tribute to Tina Turner, August 26 Kiesha Wright has been performing as a Tina Turner impersonator for over 20 years. Throughout those years she has traveled around the world. Her most memorable experience was performing in Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas she was a featured headliner for one of the most recognizable shows to this date Legends in Concert. Before the tribute to Tina Turner show Andre Thierry will be joining the Kiesha Wright band, with a little blues and a little Zydeco music from his French Creole heritage which is deeply rooted in Louisiana. Wine and Wisdom , August 22 For a second year in a row, Lake County Wineries's "Wine and Wisdom," a wine tasting event, is coming to Vallejo's Waterfront on August 22. For three hours, guests will be able to sample different wines from various wineries with the beautiful setting of the Vallejo waterfront ahead. While the Lake County Winery industry is still young, the wineries are excited to bring their wines to Vallejo to offer visitors a chance to sample tasty award-winning wines in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Guests can also enjoy the open air with Yoga, Tai Chi, cultural dance performances as well as Kite Flying surrounded by a food court, arts & crafts and music - with unique chocolates to pair with wine. Classic Packard cars will be placed along some of the wineries adding a touch of Gatsby period. Congressman Mike Thompson will be chairing this event and the Lake County Chamber will be offering wine tasting trips to Lake County. A $10.00 ticket will ensure a special Lake County wine glass, with four tickets for four pours. Additional tickets will be $3.00 for five pours. Jeff Azuar K-9 Trials, August 28 The Jeff Azuar Memorial K-9 Trials is coming back and will be held this year on Friday and Saturday, August 28 and 29, at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo. All active-duty or retired city, county, federal and military law enforcement K-9 teams are invited to attend this Western States Police Canine Association (WSPCA) sanctioned event. The patrol phase of the trial will be held on Saturday and will be open to the general public at no charge. The first 100 youth will receive a free door prize. Teams will compete in obedience, agility, area search, apprehension and protection events. Registration will open at 8:00 a.m., a handler meeting will be held at 8:45 a.m. and the competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. For additional more information about the event visit the website www.cityofvallejo.net/k9trials. Correction: In the last issue of Vallejo News, we incorrectly stated that Vallejo water customers have cut back 27% over the last 2 years. However, customers cut back their use in the month of June 2015 by 27% in comparison to June 2013. The total annual conservation to date is 15.3%, nearly achieving the annual State Water Board goal of 16% of total demand compared to the base year 2013 demand.
