According to the internet, a few days ago violence erupted at a 15th reunion party for an Illinois
high school when a jealous ex-husband shot and killed his former wife and her companion at
point blank range. Oh my!
That’s the one thing about reunions: they can sure stir the
emotions. Ladies, please don’t use violence if I decline to
dance with you at our reunions... it’s not you, it’s me. I
can’t “bust the moves” anymore the way classmate Dave
Paden can. Ask him to dance... if you dare. LOL.

The additional 36 pavers for the Living Tree Memorial Park
at Vallejo High School whould be arriving today and this
weekend, with the able assistance of Chuck Waters ’70 and
classmate Crag Parker, we’ll try to get them installed.
I won’t be ordering any additional pavers until I have the chance to see who is going to
replace Clarence Isadore as principal of VHS and learn how cooperative they plan to be.

The Apaches Forever shirts are all ready to be mailed out or hand delivered. I have to wait
until I get my car back from the collison repair shop because it has a built in GPS so that
Bobby Reynolds and I can make the Vallejo rounds to hand deliver, thus saving a bunch of
money on postage. The Vallejo shirts should be delivered no later than Thursday.
I have a few extra shirts but I don’t want to sell them yet until I make sure that everyone who
ordered a shirt received what they ordered. Next week I’ll let you know what is still available
on a first come-first served basis.

Diane (Moelk) SV62 and I are saddened about the news of the
passing of Mike Bozeman. If it were not for Mike, Diane and I would
not have met, he talked me into going on our first double date to S.F.
.
A fun time was had, a flat tire made us really late getting back to
Vallejo... I thought I was a dead dog, the Moelk family did not like
late returns. For some reason everyone was asleep and Mike
myself, Diane and Julie all survived..l:)... He was a great guy...
We are very happy to hear the good news at your house! Now, try to keep her healthy, which we are
sure you will!....Stay healthy and happy, Harry...:)

Yes, Linda, the 70th Birthday Party for the VHS class of ’62 is on Friday, August 22nd at Green
Valley Country Club. The Reunion Committee just mailed out the reservation fliers to all class
members (at least the ones we have addresses on.)

Betty and I are praying for a real speedy recovery for Sally.
Just arrived home from 2 trips to Los Algodones Baja across the border from Yuma. Dental work at a
great savings with some of the best dentists I have met. Stayed with friends in Yuma that were in
Calistoga for most of their lives. We saved a ton of money on first class dental work and met some
great people. Our primary dentist has been there over 20 years and was recommended to us by
people in Yuma and Phoenix. Had great jazz on the sound system all the time and we discussed our
favorite Scotch beverages and compared single malt brands. Left Yuma Friday and it was 114
degrees for the past 2 days. Glad to get back to Vallejo for a special dinner at the Masonic Temple at
a cool 75. Keep safe and a speedy recovery ...

Hi Harry, If you are at your computer it's a good sign that Sally is doing better. I sure hope she is.
Please give her my love and let her know I am sending good thoughts her way.
I have been trying to get back on the MU list since you let me know that I had been taken off.
However, it is kind of confusing. I put in all the information but before I am able to take the last step, it
has one of those things where you have to type in the funny numbers, etc. but on this site it says to
"rewrite both of the words below with a space in between". That's fine, but there are no words, just 3
numbers. I have tried putting spaces between them, spelling them out with spaces between the
words, everything I can think of....then I get a message that if I am trying to update my profile or get
back on the MU list, I will receive an email with instructions. That's good, except I never get the
email! I am soooo sorry my adorable little guy hit the wrong place on the screen and
unlisted me!
Anyway, I'm getting them the other way but would rather be back on the list, if there is any way you
can do it. Thanks for any help. And, if you are too busy with much more important things, just ignore
this. I will understand....really. : )

Hello!
I have attached the reunion flyer once again as it has a slight change. Our evening get together will
be on Friday instead of Saturday and at a house instead of church hall.
We are also hoping to receive donations for camper shirts and I included this on the form. $15 each.
We need approximately 30 and I have 10 sponsored so far.
We will be doing a "Day Camp" for a group of kids from GVRD. They will bring one of their camp
groups to us on Friday July 11 from 9 to 2:30. We may bring our own kids, grandkids, nieces,
nephews, neighbors, students,.. I just need a head count by July 1st so I have enough supplies. We
would love to have a group larger than 25. We are still in need of staff for July 11 especially for
nature, ozlid, drama, camp crafts, and knot tying, and we also need helpers to act as JC's.
I am having another shirt printed. It will either be burgundy or red (deciding this week). You may
special order any type of sweatshirt, and those always wanting XXL or larger this is your chance to
get in an order. I need sizes by Monday, June 23. Cost is approximately $15 for t-shirts, $18 for larger
than XL, and sweatshirts depend on type ordered.

What am I chopped liver? I've lived in Texas now for more than 7 years. That being said, I find no
reason to like being here except that we have no state income taxes, the state is reliably
conservative, we execute criminals with some level of frequency, bad people always go to jail for a
very long time, the weather in N. Texas is somewhat pleasant, neither too hot or cold. Very few if any
tornados here, few hail storms and the occasional ice storm. The freeways are usually not jammed up
and we do not have Jerry Brown! (That is certainly a plus!) All of that being said, I like CA for the
weather, especially the Bay Area and the authentic Mexican Food. (What’s wrong with Tex-Mex?) I
like Oregon, for the rain and storms off the ocean. Other than that, you can keep all of the loonies, the
criminals, the liberals, the traffic jams, the high taxes, high unemployment, gun laws, and the
pervasive need to be politically correct. In Texas, you can still be most anything you want to be and
no one gives a s..t! I hope Ms. Brown and family enjoy Denton. I think that the issue of family aside,
they will certainly miss Oregon very, very much!
Well, Glenn, it wasn’t that I left you out intentionally but I only included MU readers from the
Big D area, mostly members of my class of ’62 that I know live there. I’m sure that there are
lots of other readers who also reside in the late great state of Tejas but I don’t know that for a
fact. Also I included Al Difuntorum who lives in San Antonio. I just wanted to give him a
“shout out” because of the Spurs.
There’s a few things I don’t miss about Texas: fire ants, cockroaches (big enough to carry
you off), scorpions, killer bees, rattlesnakes, water moccasins, and other various and sundry
things that go “bump in the night.” I wasn’t crazy about the Pachuco gangs that used to hang
around the San Antonio river either, except I understand that’s been all cleaned up and
sanitized for the touristas.

Harry: The short answer to your question at the end of the MU regarding Social Security and
Welfare, is that the wealthy in this country are not paying their fair share in taxes and have not for a
long time. If they had we would not be in the situation we are in. Things have gotten as bad as they
have over time not overnight and we just sat by and let it happen. It’s time to wake up.
Gary, here’s the data I found on the internet:
The top 10 percent of income earners paid 71 percent of all federal income taxes in
2010, though they earned only 45 percent of all income. The bottom 50 percent paid 2
percent of income taxes, but earned 12 percent of income.

Hi Harry,
I have been thinking of you and Sally every day since I read in the MU that Sally was having her heart
valve mended. That darling lady has been through so many health issues and yet she is so sweet
and kind and always smiling with those gorgeous sparkling blue eyes! Life is just not fair sometimes.
Please give her my best wishes for a speedy recovery and let her know that many of us care about
her very much. She is in my prayers.
On a lighter note: my husband Frank '51, and I attended the Gathering of Vallejoans lunch at the
Black Bear Diner today. We sat with Jim Porterfield '55 and his sister Sylvia Porterfield-Ramsey '57.
Willis McJunkin '56 came over to say "hello" and the subject of the article that was in the Vallejo
Times Herald today came up (Solano Middle School mascot name change
from Chieftans to Titans). The article said, in short, that the school had followed similar steps as the
much publicized and controversial debate of the VHS Apaches name change.
Jim was wearing a red baseball hat with "VHS '55" on it and his red "Apaches" tee shirt. Willis said
that he thought the whole thing was ridiculous and felt that we will always be "Apaches." I took the
opportunity to tell them of the "Last Apache Scholarship" and that this year's recipient was Frankie
Arrostuto ‘14. I added that we hoped to have another scholarship next year and that we would
probably ask Apache alumni to donate, buy tee shirts or have some other means of collecting money
so that the Apache symbol and the Alumni of Vallejo Senior High School who graduated as Apaches
would not be forgotten.
Sylvia asked if I was on the committee this year and I answered that I was and that I would be
pleased to serve again next year. With that being said, Sylvia reached in her purse and gave me a
$20. bill towards the scholarship! And without a moment's hesitation, Jim took out his wallet and gave
me another $20. bill! Wow! Is that generous or what?! So now I have $40. for next year's Apache
Alumni Scholarship (or whatever you want to call it.) And I didn't even ask. Isn't that great?!!!
I would also like to mention that Walt Blackmon '56 bought everyone's lunch at the Gathering of
Vallejoans luncheon. Talk about generous! Thank you again Walt!
First of all, Gloria, thanks for the nice words about Sally. She (and I) appreciated them.
Secondly, GREAT SELLING JOB on the Scholarship.

Hi Harry ... I've been down with two blown disks; one in my neck the other in my back. The low back
was surgically "corrected" a week ago and I'm still sore but getting over it. More problematic is the
one in my neck ... painful from the shoulder all the way to the right hand. Right hand is essentially
useless .. paralyzed the right three fingers and that side of the hand. Typing this one handed which is
a huge pain in the arse.
Switching medicare health plans as soon as allowed (Oct., takes effect on Jan 1st) as the one I have
is a compilation of incompetence, misinformation and incredibly stupid mistakes. I have to say the
surgery seems to have gone well, but to have to wait 4 months for it? But then a lot of Vets have it
much worse so maybe I should stop bitching.
I have high hopes of getting over these maladies in time to drift down there in the fall and enjoy
m'self.
Was REALLY glad to hear Sally was successfully mending; and you too before that. Jo Anne
(Richardson-Conley) too. Getting older is just so damn much fun.

P.S. Progress on my book is at a snail's pace ... but is continuing.
I look forward to your visit, Al. Sally and I will be gone for 3 weeks beginning Oct. 2. We’re

I read where Pope Francis came down hard on the Mafia in Italy, so I sent Carmela this heads

Now reallllly, El Greeko, have you ever heard of a "true" Italian Pope excommunicate a
Mafioso? And, you must have heard that God forgives all, including the Mafioso. What may seem
evil to one, may be a blessing to another. Most of those guys only torture, chop up or blow away their
own, or their competition, anyway.
You do know, we Italians wear Malocchio Horns around our neck! Those who wear the Horn are
protected from evil. If you happen to know any Mafioso, you will notice that under their shirt is a gold
horn. No matter what path they choose, "they" are at least protected. As long as they stay alert
anyway! Hahaha
Just like my papa use to say, Al Capone was a Robin Hood in his day. He took from the rich and
gave to the poor! So again... Evil or a Blessing?
When we were just babies, my mama would pin a Malocchio horn to our diaper! My
daughter, my grandkids and even Mike wear Malocchio Horns. And we even go to
communion! So we are blessed, as well!
Hey Harry... Ironically, Mike was in the movie, "The Godfather two". When he was living
in Tahoe, they were filming, and asked him to play a couple parts! hahaha... I guess he
looked a bit "on the evil side"! Ha
Hmmm... I had heard that Mike was wearing “horns” but who knew. So he was in
Godfather Two? I guess that explains why the movie flopped. Now Carmela, are
you telling me that the Mafia is an Italian Public Service organization? Don’t worry, sweetie, if
the Pope ex-communicates you, we’ll welcome you with open arms in the Greek Orthodox
church.

Thank you, Harry, I received the tee shirts. They're great. My two kids out here are thrilled to have
them. I'll mail one to my other daughter in Kansas tomorrow. I still think the school district people are
idiots.
I haven't keep up with the MU and today I looked at the 16th's because I wanted to find out how Sally
was doing. I was stunned when I read Tracy Johnson's note. Am I wrong or did our sweet Berta
Zachary leave us? She was truly a special person. My daughter, Becky, was her and Nancy
Noonan's student assistant at Vallejo Jr. High. She adored Roberta, who taught my baby girl a
lot. My love goes out to her family.
Well, I'm getting back to my sewing projects for Christmas gifts; mug rugs, soft art dolls, wine glass
coaster-identifiers, totes, aprons, and a smattering of other fun things to make. Yes, Linda,
(Tholmer-Anderson) I'm still wanting to make a real quilt. I'm starting small. The mug rugs are
free-hand quilted. :)
Kathy, Kathy, Kathy... what are we going to do with you? You need to check in and read the
MU a little more frequently. Yes, our beloved friend and classmate, Roberta Zachary-Johnson
left us over a year ago.

Anchorage, Alaska
We've prayed for Sally in this latest health crisis, and hope that her recovery is smooth and swift from
here. You two really have endured and hopefully overcome some difficult health issues-- especially
of late. So sorry that you had to go through so much.
Love the idea of a collective 70th birthday party-- set for August
22. Feels like a bit of an endurance contest at this point, but then we
are some of the lucky ones. We'll be with you all in spirit. I don't think
anyone posted photos of our little gathering last November at the The
Sardine Can the last time we were visiting. Maybe I'll get a couple of
those photos to you in the next week or two. Here is one taken May 17
as Ron and I were arriving at a birthday party for a lovely lady-friend's
90th birthday party.
All is well in our little corner of beautiful Alaska-- that is, except that we are in the middle of one of
those adventurous total kitchen remodels! Pretty amazing how well you can get along with the sink at
the wet bar, an electric skillet, a hot plate, a crockpot and a waffle iron and a microwave.
We enjoyed our longest day of the year over the solstice, albeit it was a bit of a soggy one-- 19 hours,
21 minutes and 4 seconds of daylight here in Anchorage. But as of today we've already lost 12
seconds! Be well! That's an order!

thumb!
When you are ready to see the colt and filly, give us a call and we will meet you at the barn. Looks
like Jimmie (Easter ’59) is selling one of his horses, My Wynema. She is a quarter horse, ran a few
races, now might be a barrel horse.
The tee-shirts are great.... And thank you again for the home made pickles....someone very special
must have given you the wonderful recipe! ; )

… AND COME WITH BRAGGING RIGHTS TOO! ---- Meet Cris and
Carol's oldest grandchild, Christine Parks. She was number one in her
graduating class and just gave the Valedictory Speech at her high
school in Medford, Oregon. She also excels in piano and ballet. She'll
attend BYU.
She took this “first selfie of the graduating class” during
her speech.
For MU readers in the Spokane area, Max Axtel is my cousin Mary's
grandson. His MVP recognition is for his high school DISTRICT. He's
a sprinter who runs four events. (Immodestly, I'm reminded of my own
personal 8th grade success in the 440 running as a Papoose for VJHS
– and being the only white guy on the 440 relay team.) Max will be on
Washington State's track team next year.
LINDA RICH ---- Thank you very much for responding to my inquiry about
seeing Painted Buntings! Interesting and much appreciated!
MARGE SHALLENBURGER ---- was a wonderful person and very good friend to my mother. It
seems she is the very last of our parents' generation in the Vallejo Ward to pass on. I think all six
of her kids graduated from VHS --- which raises the question, "What family had the most siblings
graduate from VHS?" (And Saints too?) Any nominations?
POSSIBILITIES ---Today I drove past a house
we almost bought and heard

CHEESY NAME ---- There was an interesting story recently on NPR about the Cowgirl Creamery that
makes craft cheeses out near Point Reyes Station (where the wind only stops to let in the fog). By a
fortuitous accident of bacteria and mites acting on a cheese wheel, which occurred because of an
Englishman's visit, the Cowgirls created a new cheese that's been well-received. It's called “Red
Hawk”. BTW, what are the people who pressured Vallejo's school board to change the VHS mascot
now doing to petition the U.S. Army to drop the name “Apache” from its ferocious attack helicopter
human killing machine?
TAKE THE KEY. ---- Another story related to modern pop music. Researchers did some good
analysis to identify songs that are most likely to get people up on the dance floor – or at least
moving. You can probably think of better examples, but the first one they offered was “Happy” by
Farrell, and the older one was “I Got A Woman” by Ray Charles. Turns out the commonality in such
songs is that their beats / rhythms are not complex, nor too predictably simple. They contain
hesitations / skips that your body, almost irresistibly, wants to fill in with movement. This held true for
all genres of music. So, all you song-writers out there in M-U land, you now have one of the keys for
creating a smash hit. “Get crackin'!” (Pretty good title, eh?)
ON A PRETTY SPRING DAY HERE ---- a friend and I visited Ferry Farm which was home to George
Washington from about ages four to eighteen.
The now-long-gone house sat on a rise above the Rappahannock River, near the road going down to
the ferry for travelers to Fredericksburg. (Foundation stones, now outlined on the surface, have been
found for the home.)
They loan you an I-pad that narrates
the facts about the family and farm at
nine stops, one of which is an active
archeological dig with students from
several universities. A summary
pointed out how important the
adjacency to an urban center was to
Washington's development. Town
fathers modeled for him the skills and
manners so vital to his later social and
political ascendency. One of these was
social dance, so he paid for his own
dance lessons in Fredericksburg.

We ate lunch in town at La Petite Auberge, a real nice
restaurant with prices lower than those in the DC area.
ZZ IS TOPS ---- A couple weeks ago the Mezzeras
came to town to meet their new granddaughter,
Francesca. (Both dad and mom have a double Z in
their surnames so the baby has a big lavender “ZZ” on
the end of her crib.) Dave and Helen treated us all to
lunch at Wagshal's Deli near the home of son Vince and
his wife, Carmen.
Later the new parents us all to a neat little custom place,
“Canadian Sweets and Treats Bakery and Cafe”, for desserts.

GOT ICE CREAM? ---- Do you have an ice cream truck that
visits in your neighborhood? I do, and the driver always stops in the level area at the bottom of the
hill in front of my little townhouse. He's originally from Guinea and is one of the most cheerful fellows
I've ever encountered; it's no wonder he's made a living with his small business on the same route for
20 years now. I indulge in one of his ice cream novelties once or twice each summer. I got an almond
bar the other day and asked him why the truck is playing a different song this year instead of the “The
Entertainer” that he's used since 1994. (The new song is one he'd best not sing along with, at least in
English: “La Cucarocha”.) Turns out there is a company that creates and sells music custom
designed for ice cream trucks (“Who knew”, eh?) and they no longer carry The Entertainer to replace
his “worn-out” version.
IN THE HEART OF ---- downtown Alexandria on
King Street sits this classic single-screen theater,
constructed in 1914, which was still showing
movies until a year ago. It's now been turned into a
small venue for live acts – similar to the State
Theater in nearby Falls Church. The balcony area

was transformed into a nice eating / dancing area where buffet meals are available.
I went to see Jerry Katz and Chris Ryan put on a singing
musical show here called “Broadway Buffet” which was a
revue with them performing, count them, 31 songs from
Broadway shows, starting with one from “Little Johnny
Jones” in 1904 and continuing up to the last one from “The
Jersey Boys” in 2005. The good sound system handled
the recorded instrumental backing music very well.
MOVIETONE NEWS ---- Here's another movie I found engrossing and
liked a lot. Major portions are set at an upscale private school similar
to two where my daughter Cathleen taught fifth grade (Potomac
School and Norfolk Academy). The man teaches writing and the
woman teaches painting. While dealing with their own personal
challenges they bring out the best in their students through the rivalry
of their respective perspectives on what's more valuable.
Recommended.

He said “Today, in church, I am going to say a single word and you are going to help

to your mind – “ The pastor shouted out “CROSS.
Immediately the congregation started singing in unison, “The old rugged cross...”
The pastor hollered out “GRACE.”

The latest news on athletes with Vallejo roots
CC Sabathia ‘98 (3-4) will probably need another six weeks to return from his knee
problem, reports the New York Daily News. Sabathia threw off a mound last Monday
for the first time and threw another bullpen session on Wednesday.
Having already missed more than five weeks, "Sabathia must build his arm back up while making
sure his knee is healthy," the report said. Sabathia said he aims to beat the team's timetable. And it
appears that he just might do that. Here’s the latest news: Sabathia threw a 36-pitch bullpen session
Saturday and threw live BP yesterday. The Yankees are targeting next Saturday for Sabathia to return
to game action.

Toyota/SaveMart 350(k) at Sears Point
Raceway yesterday. At the half-way point of
the 110 lap race, Jeff was in 4th place. With 12
laps to go Jeff slipped into second and hung on to finish in

on the top spot in points for The Chase and now has a lead of
20 over teammate Jimmie Johnson., .

Augie Garrido ’56, and his Texas Longhorns were still alive in the College World Series after an
opening round 3-1 loss against UC Irvine Anteaters. Fortunately for the Longhorns the CWS is a
double elimination tournament and the Longhorns beat Louisville 4-1 to stay alive. They had to play
UCI again and this time Texas gained a measure of revenge when they beat the Anteaters 1-0 last
Wednesday. On Friday the Longhorns played the highly regarded Vanderbilt Commodores. Texas
took a 4-0 lead after two innings and hung on the rest of the way for the win.
That was the good news... the bad news is that because it’s a double elimination tournament they
had to beat the tough Commodores twice in a row and played Saturday to see who would advance. It
was a “nail biter” and through nine innings the score was knotted at 3 to 3 sending them into extra
innings. With two outs in the bottom of the tenth, Vandy scored to win the game. What a heartbreaker.

Youth in Time
We saw "Edge of Tomorrow" with Tom Cruise at the Palladio Theater in
Folsom recently. While mid-way through the movie, I needed to use the
bathroom. Feeling good, I did a controlled spring out of my seat and
slandered down the steps, surprised by my energy. Needing to get back
quickly to not loose much of the plot, my steps were quickening. Then
upon returning on the carpet in the hallway, my feet were flying. Not just
quick stepping, not just running, but sprinting. Flying to the corner, still no
one around, my arms splayed out straight, my body twisted around the
corner, again laying on the speed for the next 40 feet to the door
and squeezed through the opening quickly, just enough to let me in for the
next sprint up the ramp. My feet slowed at the top, quietly padding on
carpet to the "big picture" playing. Feeling flush with the sprint, my body
easily bounded up the six stairs in the dim light to the row of seats where
Gina sat. There, I turned my sideways position for a controlled set down
facing the screen, crossed my legs and resumed watching the
movie. Thinking about that sprint, breathing controlled through my nose, a
smile slowly formed; momentarily contemplating less about the plot of the
movie, and more about enjoying a moment of youthful spirit.

Hi Harry, I'm not usually too great a photographer
but these pictures of the sun setting at
Steamboat Rock State Park in eastern
Washington turned out quite well. My husband
and I and friends spent 5 days camping there in
our RV's last week hoping for lots of
sunshine. But that didn't happen, the sun only
came out in time to set, but the color was
breathtaking.
Our first night was clear with the full
moon rising over Banks Lake.
My daughter and her family joined us for the weekend.
It rained off and on but we did get a beautiful double
rainbow, but only one showed up in the picture. One may
have been too pale for the camera to pick up the color.

One of the best ways to feed a hungry group breakfast , there were 10 of us, is the "Ziploc
Omelets". We set out all the ingredients everyone selected what they liked in there omelets and
smooshed in a couple of eggs with it in the ziploc bag and threw the bags in a pot of boiling water and
13 min later perfect yummy omelets.
Lovely pictures, Kathy... good job. Hmmm... boiled omelets? I don’t know about that. I like
mine fried in butter, but I just might try your method some day.

My wife was going through some old
boxes with family photos that were
stored in our old family home basement
on Sacramento Street. She found this
article from 1955 and I thought it would
be fun to submit it. So here we are as
eleventh graders, some of us only 16
years old, mingling with the Jaycee
crowd who were on the same campus.
All these guys went on to successful
careers, even legendary.

News from the Sick Bay
As Sally and I checked out of Kaiser Vacaville we had to go by the pharmacy
for more drugs. While there we ran into our friend Jo Anne Richardson-Conley
’61 who had just had a pace maker installed the day before. She’s had a really
rough go of it but now, hopefully, it’s over and her health will improve. Get
better soon, Jo Anne.

Harry, I am doing just fine - thanks for asking. Hopefully Sally is now back home and recovering. I
can certainly sympathize with her since I was under “house arrest” for 3 weeks and I was given
morphine while in the hospital. I thought some of the staff was trying to kill me. I think I watch too
many of the forensic shows on TV.
I have been going to a respiratory therapy class twice a week in Petaluma. They
are teaching me how to breathe more efficiently for different types of activities –
which so far has been a great class. I am on oxygen most of the time – my goal
is to get off oxygen. I have had COPD for over 24 years – but haven’t been on
oxygen. My last trip to the hospital I was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary
embolism (blood clots in the lungs). I was extremely lucky they discovered the
blood clots. They performed a routine CT checking on the nodules in my lungs
to see if they had grown, and discovered the blood clots.
SMOKING WAS SO COOL IN THE 60’S

About 7 weeks ago Ann and I returned home from a 10-day
Caribbean cruise. On this cruise we both got sick, but we
based that on the fact the cruise seemed to be a Geriatric
cruise since the average age for the passengers was 60yrs or older. I developed severe coughing and sneezing
which ultimately caused me severe chest pain. I thought I
had caused a return of my Cancer. When we got home I
made an appointment with my Oncologist. My Oncologist
told me that my blood markers were fine, but that I did have
two new lesions. She put me on a weekly blood draw and
scheduled me for an appointment for today to go over any
new results.

From: Kay Ashlock-Lewis ‘61
Sad News – Bernard (Bernie) Jankiewicz VHS 1959 passed away Friday morning (June 13) of
cancer. He was diagnosed 8 or 9 years ago and given 6-18 months to live at that time. Bernie fought
a long hard battle. He always wanted to make it to 60 years old since none of the male members in
his family lived that long. His brother Bob died over 30 years ago of cancer. I play bridge with his
wife Judy.

Bernard 'Bernie' John Jankiewicz Jr. ‘59
October 22, 1941- June 13, 2014
Bernard "Bernie" John Jankiewicz, Jr. passed away June
13 at the age of 72, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He
was surrounded by his loving family. He was born Oct.
22, 1941, in Vallejo, California, to Bernard and Wanda
Jankiewicz, where he graduated from Vallejo High School
in 1959. Bernie joined the U.S. Army with his best friend,
Ken Elsdon, in September 1959, and then went to finance
school at Fort Ord.
Bernie transferred to Kitzingen Germany 703 RD
ordinance battalion and from there traveled to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Austria and Switzerland.
He was in Copenhagen the day the Berlin Wall went up. After proudly serving for two and a half
years, he came back home to Vallejo, where he enrolled at Vallejo Junior College. He worked at C &
H Sugar while going to school and in 1963, he went to work for Lucky stores. In 1968, he left Lucky
and went to work for Pacific Indoor Advertising. He worked there until his retirement in 1996. Bernie
was an inspiration to many, retiring early and enjoying life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Wanda Jankiewicz; his brother, Robert; and
his sister, Janet. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; daughters Sheri Conway of Fairfield, Janet
(Mike) Vautrin of Napa, Susan Friton of Napa and Karen Pajak of Napa. Also surviving him are seven
grandchildren: Tana, Sydney, Jolee, Heather, Jeremy, Kyle and Liam. He is also survived by many
nieces and nephews.
Bernie's hobbies included travel, golf, bocce ball and collecting colorful tennis shoes with watches to
match.
He was very outgoing and so full of life. He enjoyed every moment, and he never met a stranger.
Bernie made friends wherever he went and will always be remembered as the life of the party. He
took annual golf trips with former work friends and enjoyed golf with many local friends over the
years.
He would like to thank all of his friends for the laughs, beers, wine and one too many cigars. Bernie's
family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Ronald Julis and staff, Dr. Paul Dugan and staff, and Dr.
Tom Hildreth and staff for all of the years of wonderful care. The family would also like to thank
Hospice for their care and comfort in Bernie's last days.
At his request, there will be no services. He was fortunate and grateful to have family and friends,
from all over the country, visit him while he was still living.

Margie Shallenberger Rose
March 13, 1926 - June 11, 2014
Margie June Quarles Shallenberger Rose, (88) passed peacefully from this
world at 12:10 pm in her home on Wednesday, June 11th, surrounded by her
loving children in Orem, Utah.
The oldest of nine children, she was born in Wakita, Oklahoma on May 13,
1926, to John Robert and Ethel Margaret Quarles. Margie had a strong
passion for three things in this world – Family, Faith and Country. She was a
faithful member of the LDS Church and spent many of her years supporting
neighbors and friends. Most who have shared Margie’s company seem quite
taken by her unyielding sense of optimism with the world and things around
her. She was a “half-glass-full” kind of gal. She loved gardening (especially
roses), painting, dancing, singing, poetry, storytelling and music. She was
known for her laughter, charity and kindness, and faithful obedient nature. Margie was also a source
of wisdom and comfort to all who knew her.
Margie was raised in Las Animas, CO, and raised her family in Vallejo and Antioch, California. She
spent the last 20 years of her life in Orem, UT in her beloved 100 year old home. She married Harvey
Rhea Shallenberger on September 30, 1944. She also married Glen Rose. Margie is survived by her
6 siblings and her 6 children: Sharon (Rob) Cocanour (Sparks, NV), Robert Shallenberger (Napa,
CA), Steven (Roxanne) Shallenberger (Orem, UT), Sandra (Tommy) Stewart (Provo, UT), Laurie
Shallenberger (Provo, UT), and Donald (Desiree) Shallenberger (Elk Ridge, UT). Margie had 28
grandchildren, 30.5 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
The Funeral service was held June 17th, in the Orem 8th Ward Chapel.

Roger Paul Williams SV64
Feb. 12, 1946 - June 16, 2014
Roger Paul Williams passed away peacefully at the home of his best friend
Jacqueline Williams on Monday, June 16. He was 68.
Roger was born February 12, 1946, at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco.
He was raised in Vallejo where he attended St. Basil's Elementary School and
St. Vincent's High School. Roger had a lifelong passion for sports, especially
basketball, which he played from high school onward. He attended Solano
Junior College, later earning a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from
Humboldt State University.
He lived in Vallejo for the duration of his life and taught at Highland
Elementary School, and subsequently worked for Pacific Bell and AT&T. He

was a wonderful father and great friend to many who will miss his everyday presence and most of all,
his sense of humor.
He is survived by his three children, Heidi and Aaron Williams, and Ren‚ Johnson, as well as his
grand children, Brandon Foehr, Danielle Devlin, Jacquie Foehr, Brendan Foy, and Emmet Foy, as well
as six great grandchildren.

Phyllis F. Bertoncini ‘45
Oct. 2, 1927 - June 17, 2014
Phyllis passed away peacefully on June 17, due to complications. Phyllis was
born in Duluth, MN. to Wolmar and Edla Nieminen. Phyllis graduated from
Vallejo High School in 1945 and retired from Mare Island in 1978. She enjoyed
attending functions at the Vallejo Elks lodge, Post 550, and the Vallejo Moose
lodge.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Elmer Bertoncini ‘40 of Fairfield, and five
children, Dave Bertoncini ‘67 of Sun City West, AZ, Larry Bertoncini ‘67 of
Benicia, Laurel Bertoncini ‘60 of Mill Valley, Thomas Laflamme of Seattle, WA
and Andre Laflamme of Gig Harbor, WA.
Her family and friends will miss her dearly. Phyllis was loved by all that knew her. Please come
celebrate her life with friends and family on Tuesday, July 1 at the Vallejo Elks Lodge from 4 to 7 p.m.

this year. It was his father, Ray
senior, who built his first
theatre in Vallejo in 1941 The El
Rey, was Suyfy’s 4th theatre in
Vallejo and opened in 1949.
The first Century theater was
the Century 21 in San Jose,
California, which opened in
1963.
The obit states that Ray Jr.
opened his first theater in

Vallejo at age 23 which would have been in 1961. This must be and error because there were
no movie theaters in Vallejo other than the El Rey. Can any of you readers shed any light on
this?
Just as many of you did, I saw many movies at the El Rey, but I particularly remember seeing
Psycho and being scared to death and many years later experiencing more hair-raising fear
with Jaws. Ahhh, memories...
Raymond Syufy
1938-March 31, 2014
Raymond Syufy, owner of the Century Theatres chain, died March 31 in Sausalito, Calif., of
complications from lymphoma. He was 76.
“He was pretty much the last of his breed,” said Jeff Blake, president of Sony Pictures Releasing. “He
had a vision of the theater business and went out and created something unique. It’s a familyoperated company, so at least Ray’s legacy will live on virtually unchanged.”
Syufy, born in Sacramento and raised in Berkeley, opened his first theater in Vallejo, Calif., at the age
of 23. Century, among the top 20 domestic chains, now operates 425 screens in five states.
An aggressive, combative businessman, Syufy’s career was dotted with head-to-head confrontations
with rival exhibs and majors who he felt were denying him product. He won most of the battles that he
fought against such industry practices as blind bidding and product allocations.
Syufy was the only child of Lebanese immigrants. He grew up in Berkeley and worked at his parents'
corner grocery store. After graduating from St. Mary's College in Moraga, he attended Boalt Hall
School of Law in Berkeley. While in law school, he worked nights at a local movie theater.
Syufy is survived by his wife of 33 years, Marcia; his seven children, Paula Mederios, Raymond W.,
Linda Moscone, Elizabeth Kelley, Joseph, Victoria and Michelle; and seven grandchildren.

was only nine years old, and although I liked the song I had no idea of the real meaning
behind it. I, literally, thought it was about a house falling apart. Now that I’m falling apart I

My Thompson seedless grapes are only about 75% ripe but I’m starting to eat them anyway.
It’s the only way I can get my share before those lousy Scrub Jays eat them all. My apricot
tree is loaded so I’ve decided that I’m going to dehydrate what I don’t eat or give away. The
only thing I dried last season with my new dehydrator was hot peppers and then I ground
them up to add spice to soups, marinades, salsa etc. Maybe I’ll do a few peaches too.

GVRD DAY CAMP REUNION

Hello Day Campers!
Since no one previously objected to the date we went with July 12 for the reunion. See attached flyer.
Unfortunately, we were unable to get the spot we have had the last several years so we took about
the only one available which is on the island at Lake Frisbee. I believe it's in full sun and has lots of
ducks, so Marilyn and I have discussed sending someone early and possibly getting one of the public
areas near our normal site. We do have the Lake Frisbee site reserved. Anyone have EZ ups for
shade?
Our GVRD camp is scheduled for Friday, July 11 and for that we have a large area reserved. It is
approximately just above where the concession stand and ferris wheel once were. We are still in
need of staff, JCs, and leaders. We have myself, Marilyn Roop, Ro DeVille, Sue Paden, and Annette
Isaacson. Who else?? Someone for nature, camp crafts, some type of sport to take the place of
archery, lead circles games,....I would like to have the staff in place by June 20 so we have a few
weeks to dial in the day's schedule.
I will also be printing another batch of shirts. This one will commemorate the camp we are running for
GVRD. We decided on calling it Camp Treillond to not mix it up with the other "Day Camps" that
GVRD may have because as we all know, our camp was and is the ONE AND ONLY! The shirt will
also have the year 2014. I am thinking of red which we have not had and mainly so our campers will
show up throughout the park but I am open to other ideas. We are looking for a quote as well.
NOW...the grand idea my staff had was to offer each GVRD camper a free shirt which would be paid
for by one of us. Cost would be approximately $15. Please let me know if you are willing to be a
sponsor. Anyone may order a shirt for themselves and I am taking special orders for sweatshirts.
Hats are also available to be embroidered if I have 12 or more.
Finally, a couple new Day Campers found after much searching: Margaret Carver and Shon Dickson.

The Monday Update was originally intended to serve as a newsletter for members of the VHS Class of ’62. Over a period
of time, members of companion classes (1960, ’61, ’63, and ’64) and from Hogan and St. Vincent’s, indicated an interest
and began participating. Today the Monday Update has a wide and varied range of readership ranging from 1937 and
into the 1990s. We also have several -guests” who have no direct affiliation with Vallejo whatsoever but are able to relate
to the era.. Anyone who has an interest in, or is nostalgic for, our era is welcomed to participate.
Back issues from as far back as 2007 are available on line at www.VHS62.com. To subscribe to the MU go to

There is no charge for accessing the Update… just the expectation that subscribers will periodically “contribute”
something to the overall effort, such as a personal update, archival pictures, news, memories, anecdotes, true
confessions etc… anything that may be somehow relevant or interesting to our readership as a whole.

YEARBOOKS ON CD
Thanks to Bill Strong, many of the Yearbooks from Vallejo High, Hogan High and St. Vincents’ High
are available on a CD. (Also quite a few of the Junior High Schools.) The MU will be happy to send
you a personal copy, of your choice, on a CD for a free will donation towards the Class of ’62 party
fund. The average donation has been $35. You may order up to five (5) yearbooks for the same
donation. Bill Strong keeps finding and scanning yearbooks from all the Vallejo schools so the list
keeps growing. To find out which Yearbooks are available please send your request to
