Making a mark in Aerospace & Defence Lt Governors Award Submitted By Ibtasam Arshad and Brad Cornick IMP Aerospace’s Engineering Special Projects Department garnered an ‘Honorable Mention’ in this year’s ‘Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering’ for their work on the Aircraft Structural Life Extension Program Norway - ASLEP(N) program. The award was presented to IMP representatives at Province House on July 14 by His Honour, Brigadier-General the Honourable J.J. Grant, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. The ‘Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering’ is a prestigious award that is presented annually to an individual, a company, government department or consortium who through original achievement, creative accomplishment in engineering or excellence in engineering design demonstrate a high quality of professional standards. The finalists were selected from a list of very high profile engineering projects. This year’s winners were AECOM and CBCL for the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Sites Remediation and SNC Lavalin for the design of the new Halifax Central Library. Under normal circumstances, the ‘Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering’ is only awarded to two projects. However the ASLEP(N) was so unique in its nature that this year an Honourable Mention was also given so that this achievement in aviation excellence could be recognized. IMP AEROSPACE & DEFENCE #24 September 2015 Lt Governors Award (Continued from cover page) The ASLEP(N) program features the installation of new wings on Norwegian P3 Orion aircraft to give them a new lease on life - this is just one of several aircraft refurbishment programs that is being conducted at IMP Aerospace’s facilities at the Halifax Stanfield Airport that demonstrates significant and innovative engineering. This award would not have been made possible without the contributions of our project team members including all engineering departments and the ASLEP(N) team members from other departments. It is indicative of the high level of professionalism that IMP Aerospace continues to demonstrate, showcasing the engineering excellence within our operating unit and exemplifying the team effort and spirit of our people. Lt Gov Award Certificate In Support of Fighting Forest Fires – Cascade’s Quality Work Submitted By Kevin Lemke The approximately 440 forest fires burning Canada-wide this summer created a sense of urgency to maximize the availability of aircraft to aid in the fight against further damage. This was the case with the work Cascade was contracted to perform for the Government of Saskatchewan on their CL-215T firefighting aircraft, #217. At the time of the work there were 110 active fires burning. The Saskatchewan Government needed every available tool in its fight against these wildfires, so Cascade’s ability to react in a timely manner was critical. Upon completion of the initial aircraft survey, Cascade identified the extent of the damage and recommended repair options. A baseline contract delivery date of August 31 was agreed upon with Cascade. Saskatchewan initially sought an approved repair design from Bombardier. Based on the urgency of the fire situation and the Bombardier repair design timeline the customer elected to have the design activity conducted by Cascade as well. The repair design and installation were approached as an urgent Aircraft on Ground (AOG) activity. Cascade developed an exceptionally aggressive delivery target of test flying the aircraft on July 24. Engineering designed the repairs and received Transport Canada approval of the Repair Design Certificate by July 10. Supply Chain sourced and expedited all materials, including having suppliers working over weekends. Production then worked around the clock to push the aircraft through the repair activity. While the repair scope was larger than initially anticipated, Cascade was still able to deliver within 5 days of the internal target, which was over a month ahead of the contracted date and under budget. Due to the diligence and hard work of Cascade staff, this effort resulted in a real success for Cascade and their customer. Well Done to the Cascade team! Cascade Delivers 3617 to Mexico Submitted By Ben Boehm Congratulations to everyone involved in the delivery of aircraft 3617 to the Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana) which occurred on July 20. The Mexico program was a valuable learning experience for all of us. It represented a significant amount of investment in our growth and development, both in terms of engineering expertise and in how we manage large scale, long term work in our hangar. We learned a number of significant lessons from this project. We will be taking Tim Sarling’s selfie shows about half of the Cascade Crusaders aboard the bike built for 30 One of HR’s Own – Certified in Lean Submitted By Deborah Maynard Over the course of this past year, Erja Gladu, Manager, Employee Services, participated in the Lean, Green Belt Certification program. This required significant dedication on her behalf, both in terms of time away from her duties in Payroll, but also in terms of the project work the program required of her, above and beyond the 3 weeks, when she participated in the actual course work. The “opportunity” for Cascade in having employees participate in Lean training is to equip employees with a toolkit to assist them in reducing waste in their business processes – it is an approach that seeks to improve flow in the value stream and eliminate waste. It uses a powerful framework and statistical tools to uncover root causes in order to understand and reduce variation. In addition, it seeks to minimize the resources required for production by eliminating non-value added activities that inflate costs, lead times and inventory requirements. The goal being to emphasize the use of quality improvement programs, preventive maintenance, pull systems, flexible work forces and flexible production facilities. Erja, was also responsible for ensuring that the Payroll department continued to run in her absence, requiring many additional hours outside of her course work to ensure that we all received our weekly pay on time. After 3 full weeks of course work, completing her practical experience and project work, we are happy to announce that not only did Erja receive her Green Belt certification in Lean, but she was also awarded a Silver Reward for her participation and project work. Congratulations Erja on a job well done! every opportunity to implement solutions and make adjustments where highlighted to be ready for additional work that we expect will come our way, and when it does, we will be ready! In the end we delivered a great product and achieved a major international milestone with Engineering’s establishment of our first foreign military certification basis. Congratulations one and all! DAC Visit IMP Group Acquires the CHC Hangar Submitted By Kingsley Gale Submitted By Paul McCabe A delegation of 15 people from the Departmental Audit Committee for National Defence visited IMP Aerospace on June 19 for briefings and a tour of the plant. IMP Group recently acquired the CHC Helicopter Hangar at the Halifax International Airport. Located just past IMP Group’s #9 Hangar at 799 Barnes road, this 37 thousand square foot facility was acquired by IMP Group to support future growth opportunities. Soon the IMP Group logo will be placed on the hangar and it will be renamed as #10 Hangar. Engaging with the Community at the Abbotsford International Airshow 2015 Submitted By Gina Pasqualini Cascade Aerospace had one of the busiest booths at this year’s Abbotsford International Airshow and the team of volunteers did an outstanding job of making sure that kids of all ages had fun making paper airplanes and “flying” them competitively. The “competition” was a collaboration between Cascade and Lockheed Martin. The kids made paper F35 aircraft at the Lockheed Martin tent, and then went to Cascade to see whose paper airplane would fly the farthest. Winners went home with an F35 hat from Lockheed and/or an aircraft model-making kit from Cascade. In addition, our own Stu McIntosh, VP of Programs, brought attendees of the Airshow’s Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain to tears with the playing of two laments on his pipes: Flowers of the Forest followed by Amazing Grace. The setting for his performance could not have been better. Flanked by the RCAF CF18 air demonstration Hornet adorned with a Battle of Britain paint scheme, and with the skies clearing from a passing storm just after sunset, Stu made his musical tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Britain. As immortalized by Sir Winston Churchill when referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force crews – which included numerous Canadians – fighting the first armed campaign fought entirely by Air Forces while protecting Great Britain against a German invasion, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Thank you again Cascade volunteers for helping us show the local community what an amazing industry we work in and what a great group of people we have supporting our local business. The tech pubs office showed their support by purchasing beaded bangles made by a few of the staff, with 100% of the proceeds going towards the scholarship. The sponsorship program was started in Uganda by Jonathan (Jo) Cooper, a South African who has spent the last five years travelling and working around the Southern and Eastern parts of Africa. Based in the remote village of Ruguburi, Jo aims to effect real change in small rural communities with an emphasis on health and education. This program has grown to become the not-for-profit initiative, Footsteps Through Africa. The sponsorship gives students in the public school system an opportunity to attend the local private school, Nkuringo Child Care. On average, there are one hundred and twenty pupils per teacher in public schools in Uganda, but thanks to the fourteen devoted teachers at Nkuringo, each class has about twenty five students. This may be why Nkuringo Child Care ranks first academically in the Kisoro district. The sponsored students are often children whose families cannot afford to pay their school fees, and orphaned children who do not have any support systems. The one-year sponsorship provides a student with a roof over his or her head, three meals per day, stationery, and a school uniform. At Nkuringo, the students benefit from the smaller classes, improved learning conditions, and more capable teachers. A portion of the sponsorship also goes toward further developing the school itself, and through donations to Footsteps Through Africa, Jo and his team have already built a community library and are beginning a book drive. A fifteen year old student, Ambrose, has since been selected as the sponsored student. As Jo explains, “Ambrose is so determined to get an education that he sits almost every day after school in the local market, selling fresh produce from their subsistence farm to pay for the basic needs of schooling.” With the help of IMP Technical Publications, Ambrose has now been awarded a full scholarship to attend a private school in Ruguburi, Uganda. The students at Nkuringo are also giving back to their community. The students have pioneered a ‘Go Green Rubuguri’ initiative that aims at keeping the village clean and countering the deforestation of the mighty Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - one of the last remaining natural habitats of the Silverback Gorilla. Education about the environment and sustainability is a priority at Nkuringo. It is crucial that the students learn the importance of conservation, and understand the community benefits of tourism and the presence of gorillas in the forest. In keeping with the eco-friendly foundation of the school, each student plants an indigenous tree at the start of their education there. It is then the student’s responsibility to nurture and protect the tree. Part of the sponsorship will go toward planting 3 indigenous trees to counter deforestation, practice conservation, and raise awareness about the misuse of natural resources. The scholarship that IMP Tech Pubs has given him will nurture his potential, enabling him to build a brighter future for himself and his family.” Publications Sharing hands Engineering Running Team in the 2015 Blue Nose Marathon Submitted By CGC and HH On May 17, several engineers decided to go the extra mile by forming a relay team, Aerofeet, and running in the 12th annual Scotiabank Bluenose Marathon. Despite the somewhat overcast weather and a few setbacks, they were able to finish the marathon in 3 and half hours and place 5th out of a crowded field of 29. They really enjoyed the experience and look forward to doing it next year! L - R; Dejan Jovanovic, Haipeng Han, Tatyana Munn, Graeme Suddard, Chris Carey, Steve Young, Michael Nunn, Craig Beaton Aerospace 1 Hangar Face Lift Submitted By Bruce McCulloch For those who are travelling in and out of Halifax Stanfield International Airport, we are pleased to showcase the new paint job on IMP Aerospace #1 Hangar. This challenging project required the contractor to sandblast the surface rust in preparation for 2 coats of epoxy paint. Care had to be taken to keep the sand away from the helicopters inside #1 Hangar. Much of this work was done at elevation, in a boomlift, and so it was important to maintain safe work practises. The project became extra challenging because July was a particularly moist month, so some of the steel rusted again before paint was applied, and required additional sand blasting. In the end, we are pleased with the results, and also pleased that the entire job was done within budget. On your next flight out of the airport, take a look with pride at the new face of IMP Aerospace. Cabot Trail Relay Submitted By Gaetan Blais On 23rd and 24th May Steve Long participated in the Cabot Trail Relay, as an IMP representative on the DND team from Shearwater. Taking place on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, this 24 hour continuous run is an annual event that spans a distance of 185 miles or 276 km in a 17-stage relay format that sees runners in each team run one of these stages. It begins in Baddeck, Cape Breton and goes over steep mountains in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, through many small communities around the famous Cabot Trail and on to the gently rolling Margaree Valley. Steve was included in the team of runners representing Shearwater in this year's annual Cabot Trail Relay. Competing against 70 other teams, Steve ran Leg # 11, a 14 km run which took him one hour and 15 minutes to complete. His run started at 11:10 pm, running until 12:35 am. As if this was not difficult enough, not only was he running in the dark but he also had to face strong winds of up to 50 km/h throughout his run (Legs # 10 and # 11 are also considerably more challenging because of their long uphill stretches). Led by Lt (N) the team trained in small groups prior to the event and the focus for most team members (since this was their first time in the majority of cases) was to meet the time constraints of their leg. Submitted By Alyson Fromm Having survived our worst winter in as long as we can remember, many of us were eager to get out and get active in the great outdoors this spring. Running is an activity that continues to grow in popularity around the world since it has significant health benefits and requires no equipment or formal training (just a pair of good running shoes)! With this in mind, many employees of IMP Aerostructures expressed an interest in “learning to run” and at the end of April, formed a running group and started their own “running clinic.” This determined little group decided to train for their first ever 5 km run using the popular Couch to 5 km (C25K) program, which is designed to take non-runners from a sedentary lifestyle (Couch Potato) to running their first 5 kms (or 30 minutes) within 9 weeks (Check out the website www.c25k.com for more information)! It was a small but mighty group who ventured out on that first cold, blustery, snowy (YES, SNOW!) in April. By the 3rd or 4th week the group had grown to as many as 12 - 14 and employees were encouraged to bring friends, relatives and partners out to run with the group. Participants made the commitment to follow the C25K program - running 3 times per week – twice with the group (leaving from work Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15 p.m.) and once on the weekend on their own, or with another group or partner. The group took off, and by June 25, had run their first 5 kms ever (much to their own surprise)! Over the summer months, many of these new athletes have entered and run their first ever organized, timed event and many others have plans to run one by the fall. We are so proud of this determined little group, who are changing their lives for the better, one step at a time! There were 110 participants this year (28 teams). The weather conditions were ideal for golf, no wind with a slight cloud cover so not too hot. To provide RCAF staff some relief and meet operational commitments, DND requested that IMP perform a periodic inspection for CP140115. CP140115 arrived at IMP Aerospace on June 22 for #3 periodic CP140115 Periodic Inspection Crew inspection from theatre in the Middle East. Through strong team work between IMP and DND, and some long hours, CP140115 was delivered on August 25, the planned delivery date and under budget. A big thank you to the Periodic Inspection team for their dedication and commitment in getting this valuable Air Force asset back in theatre. Well done! Bordertown Biker’s Bash Submitted By Linda Carter On the last weekend of July, Amherst hosted its first Bikers Bash. Bike enthusiasts came from the United States and across Canada, young and old and from all walks of life, lawyers, doctors, and a few IMP employees, (Jim Perry, Gregg LeBlanc, Cindy Hicks, Janice Beed-Meade, Mitch Meade, Alan Mattinson, Vaughn Dobson, and Alan Gould). Bikers enjoyed touring the scenic surrounding communities; many did not realize what our community had to offer and were very pleased with the many sites they visited. Several events were held to keep bike enthusiasts entertained; vendors and concerts in downtown Amherst were set up throughout the weekend. Stunt riders were on hand to perform for the crowds. Some residents who have never had an opportunity to be a passenger on a motorbike before were offered rides. On the final day, there was a ceremony to bless the bikes. Organizers are already busy planning for next year’s event. IMP Aerospace Techsploration 2015 Submitted By Guitton Séverine For the past four years, IMP Aerospace has been sending representatives to participate in Techsploration. Techsploration is a not-for-profit organization which aims “to increase the number of women working in Science, Trades and Technology, by assisting young women from diverse backgrounds to explore a wide range of career options”. Techsploration offers three programs to students where industry participates: • Techsploration Career Research Model (work-place job shadow for a day) • Techsploration Goes to School (Industry visits schools) • Techsplorer Events hosted by St. Mary’s University and the, NSCC campuses in Truro and Port Hawkesbury (students are brought to the event) This year, IMP participated in the Techsploration Goes to School where IMP representatives were involved in a round robin session. During the session our IMP Aerospace representatives provided an overview of IMP and explored the various aspects of careers at IMP Aerospace (including educational requirements) with the students. This benefits Aerospace by helping to develop our local workforce, addressing skill shortages, increasing workplace diversity and demonstrating our commitment to the community. Next year, IMP Aerospace hopes to expand into the Career Research Model program. This will enable IMP’s trades to be presented to young students across the province and demonstrate IMP as an equitable employer. A big thank you goes out to all the 2015 volunteers who dedicated their time for the events and meetings, to their direct supervisor for enabling their participation and to our management team for their continued support. Training Department Pilots CP140 Aurora Type Course Submitted By Christina Pippy With employee development a priority of the strategic plan, we are delighted to announce the development and delivery of the first CP140 Type Course including an Avionics package. It is through collective efforts, support and sponsorship, that we are able to move forward on this much needed program. IMP technicians completing work associated with upgrading and modernizing the CP140 aircraft for continued use in the Canadian Forces will soon have access to the CP140 Aurora Type Course. The 12 module mechanical program, currently being trialed, covers main aircraft systems components and general operation; while the four avionics supplement modules cover the relevant mission systems. Fifteen individuals were selected from production, mechanical and avionics backgrounds and logistics support to participate in the trial delivery of the modules. These participants take part in completing self-study packages with exams, followed by classroom theory instruction and a final exam for each of the 12 modules. Our project team consists of a Training Officer and three Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) with over 70 years combined experience in mechanical and electrical aircraft systems: Gilles Goulette, Kevin Wadden and David Harrison. All three SMEs share experience and knowledge as former members of the Canadian and British Armed Forces in addition to being current production personnel employees working with CP140 aircraft at IMP. Gilles and Kevin split the mechanical modules, while David looks after all of the electrical and avionics modules. Without their expertise, hard work and dedication, the project’s ongoing success would not be possible. While on loan to the Training Department as SME’s, they assisted with the development of each module’s materials; self-study packages, exams, and classroom session materials. As the trial delivery of each module is completed and feedback from participants is received, the modules are finalized for their planned on-going delivery to other production personnel. We look forward to this type course, currently in the final approval stages by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) Technical Authority (TA) in Ottawa, being regularly offered by the end of this year. Commissioned in 1953, The Queen and Prince Philip embarked on Britannia for the first time in Tobruk on 1 May 1954. The Royal Yacht's last foreign mission was to convey the last governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten (now The Lord Patten of Barnes), and the Prince of Wales away from Hong Kong after its handover to the People's Republic of China on 1 July 1997. Britannia was decommissioned on 11 December 1997 but is now on permanent display to the public at the Port of Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. Back by popular demand our IMPrint Contest this issue will once again be a hide and seek contest. OHS Annual Conference Submitted By Donna Myers In July the Occupational Health and Safety departments from IMP Group met at the Atlantica Hotel, Oak Island, for our annual convention. In attendance were representatives from Cascade, Innotech/Execaire, Aerospace, CanJet, Aerostructures and Corporate. Day one began with opening remarks from Rob Burns, VP Corporate Human Resources and Bernie O’Rourke, Sr. VP, General Counsel. The remainder of the day was spent reviewing Incident & lost time control, quarterly reporting and continuous improvement. Presentations were delivered from each business unit discussing our current challenges, successes and best practices. Guest speaker, Deanna Harnish from Workers Compensation Board joined on the final day with a wonderful presentation on psychological injury claims. A productive and enjoyable time was had by all. Student from NSCC – Occupational Health & Safety Submitted By Donna Myers On April 27 the Occupational Health Safety & Environment department had an opportunity to bring in a student from NSCC to complete her work term while completing her course in Health & Safety. Jennifer Allen brought with her a strong desire to implement the strategies she learned. Her positive attitude and willingness to jump right in made her a valuable asset during her short time with us. Jenn assisted with ergonomic assessments, risk assessments and she conducted respiratory fit testing. She also attended the National Day of Mourning Ceremony, May 4 and the Kick-off to NAOSH week. On Wednesday May 6 she attended the very first ever Symposium for Aviation industry. Another big success was how Jenn developed and implemented OHS&E safety boards for all hangars. They are now all universal and look a lot nicer. Check out your boards in the main entrances of hangars. She also revamped the new employee orientation slide show which is now more interactive. Step Back in Time Submitted By Jim Gaylor On a sunny day in July, MOB Comox employees had a chance to step back in time, way back to 1907! A friend of one of the employees brought his 1907 Stanley Steamer Automobile to the hangar where he obliged us with a few pictures beside fittingly enough, Cormorant 907. If this wasn’t enough fun, (once the aircraft was towed a safe distance away) he gave a demonstration on the intricacies of firing up the boiler which took about 30 minutes. Certainly not a “honey, can you dash out to the store for some eggs” experience! Once the boiler reached the operational pressure of about 300psi, we were all treated to a ride down the hangar service road. The words awesome and amazing were frequently heard! It was a fun experience to take a step back from one of the most advanced helicopters of today to what was once the most advanced automobile of its time. IMP Aerostructures supports New 737 Max Program Submitted By Robert Small IMP Aerostructures was awarded a contract to build assemblies for the new 737 Max Program from Spirit AeroSystems, Incorporated. Critical to this contract was the requirement for a quick turnaround to support initial delivery. Through careful planning and a focussed team approach to the procurement of materials, tools and parts preparation, IMP Aerostructures was able to cut the lead time in half to meet the contract requirements. Spirit and IMP are now partnered for success through daily conference calls to work out the best solution to support delivery of product to the Spirit production line. Employed as Aircraft Control Centre Supervisor, Frank was a valued part of the IMP Family for 10 years. Frank will always be remembered for his love of planes, motorcycles, camping, fishing, boating, 4-wheeling, and most importantly for the happiness he had in helping the people that he loved, and individuals in need. His family will be forever grateful to IMP for giving Frank the opportunity to come back home to Nova Scotia and work at IMP. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family during this difficult time. He will be sadly missed by his IMP family. When the Amherst Food Bank put out a plea to help fill their empty shelves this summer, IMP Aerostructures employees stepped up to the plate and filled numerous shopping bags with non-perishable and household items. Over 200 area residents make use of the local food bank and with the winter we just experienced, many food drive events had to be cancelled, resulting in less food being donated over a longer period of time. Employees of IMP Aerostructures started bringing items in immediately following the request for help. USW Local 4883 generously donated a cheque in the amount of $100. Thank you very much to those who so kindly donated items. Food Bank Donations 2015 Employee Engagement Survey Results Submitted By Human Resources 2015 Annual Dilly Day Submitted By Linda Carter IMP Aerostructures annual Dilly Day was held on June 5, in memory of Reva Gray, Programs Manager who used to hand out Dilly bars to the employees each summer. During the afternoon break Dilly Bars were handed out to all employees by the Programs department and Reva’s husband Ike. The results of the 2015 Employee Engagement Survey are in! And the participation rates for IMP Aerospace and Defence were amazing! A whopping 70% of you took the time to share your feedback on the seven key survey areas: Performance Management, Management, Leadership, Information Sharing, Health and Safety, Work Environment and Engagement. Representing an 18.5% increase over 2014 participations rates, and the highest response rate ever for IMP Aerospace and Defence! Thank you to all employees who participated in this year’s employee engagement survey and we look forward to hearing from even more employees next year! 2015 IMP Aerostructures Family Day Submitted By Linda Carter The annual IMP Aerostructures Family Day was held on Saturday, July 11th at the Tidnish Dock’s ballpark. Employees, both active and retired enjoyed a day of sunshine and various activities. The crowd was entertained by a band that consisted of Aerostructures employees, Al Cooper and Barry White (no kidding those are their real names!). BBQ burgers, sausages and hotdogs were served up and ice cream treats were handed out for dessert. There were games for the kids and as you can see from the photos face painting for all ages. Many great prizes were given out, several that of which were donated by many of our vendors. A wonderful day was had by all that attended, and we wish to extend a huge thank you to our Social Committee members and the many volunteers who put a lot of hard work and time into making the day a huge success. During the 26 week program 2 members achieved their lifetime membership with Weight Watchers and a total 265.75lbs was lost over the length of the session. All of the participants changed their outlook on how they consume food and what they consume, as well as changing their lifestyles through fitness, with 6 of the members joining the IMP Running Club.
