They found it challenging to find a home that provided the space they needed, and fit within their budget. After considering several locations, they decided to move to Stuarts Draft, Virginia. “For us this house was perfect,” MacKenzie says. “It had the yard, the view, the neighborhood, and a good school district. While DCCU has a robust security program and a dedicated team continually working to stay on top of new threats, watchfulness begins with you. Often the large scale data breaches that occur are beyond our control. Large companies are targeted and your personal information is at risk by simply doing business with the organization. Lately, there has also been a sharp rise in confidence scams and social engineering attacks that prey on your relationship or familiarity with a particular person or group. These attacks vary in nature, but attackers may try to trick you into sharing account information with someone you think is “in need”, or they may send you phishing emails containing links that direct you to fraudulent websites. These are just a few examples of ways you can be targeted. The good news is there are several easy steps you can take to help prevent fraud from happening to you. Guard Your Personal Information Don’t share your account information with anyone, and securely dispose of all documents containing personal information. In addition, make sure your home computer has updated anti-virus and anti-malware software installed, and if it doesn’t, you shouldn’t conduct any confidential transactions on it – viruses can expose account credentials. Be Wary of Links that Come Through Email Phishing emails appear legitimate but contain links that direct you to fraudulent/malicious websites that may attempt to install malware on your device or trick you into exposing your online banking username and password. When in doubt, contact the organization by a phone number you know to be legitimate and verify the validity of the email. Be Skeptical Question everything. Whether you receive a phone call, mail solicitation, email offer, or a link on social media, be sure to stop, think, and ask lots of questions. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. In the coming weeks, be on the lookout for information about our new fraud alerts program and also make plans to attend our Fall Shred Days which will be held in October – I hope you will take advantage of these great ways to help prevent fraud. DCCU Announces Candidates for 2016 Board of Directors The Governance and Nominations Committee has nominated the following members as candidates for election to the Credit Union’s Board of Directors for 2016: Daniel L. Bowman | Michael Blinn | Kenneth A. Hawkins, Jr. | Leslie E. Ramsey | Debbie Clatterbuck There are three positions open. If a member desires to serve on the Board of Directors, but has not been nominated by the Governance and Nominations Committee, he/she may be nominated by petition. Nominations by petition must be signed by at least 500 members. The petition forms and procedures are available by email to GovernanceAndNominationsCommittee@mydccu.com and must be submitted by Monday, November 2, 2015. The election period will start in January, with ballots distributed via year-end statements and email. Keep up-to-date with the election process by visiting mydccu.com. Daniel L. Bowman My wife Kim and I are Shenandoah Valley natives and have been members of DCCU since 2005. We currently reside in Augusta County, Virginia. I am a certified public accountant and a partner with the CPA Firm of Yancey, Bowman and Helsley, CPAs, LLC. The firm has offices in Harrisonburg, Woodstock, and Luray. While my practice focuses on qualified retirement plan design and administration, I also assist a large number of clients with income tax planning and compliance. I graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with degrees in Accounting and Business Administration. I currently serve as Treasurer for the Mosby Foundation, a local non-profit organization, and I previously served as Treasurer of the Harrisonburg-Massanutten Rotary Club. I hope that being elected to the Board will allow me the opportunity to share my business experiences and ideas in a way that helps DCCU and its members. Learn more at mydccu.com. I grew up in Augusta County and graduated from Riverheads High School and Eastern Mennonite University. My wife Melissa and I have 2 children: Kian, age 6 and Ella, age 2. I am currently the Chief Financial Officer at People Places, a non-profit Foster and Adoption agency in Staunton, Harrisonburg and Charlottesville. I am also founder and President of giv2giv.org, a fundraising tool for community charities. I have served as both a Director and an Officer on other community and nonprofit boards. I am most passionate about bringing best-in-class financial tools to our community through the use of technology. In my spare time, I coach youth soccer and enjoy biking and hiking. I reside in Churchville with my family. Kenneth A. Hawkins, Jr. My wife Mary Jane and I have lived in the South for half our lives, are originally from New England, and happily relocated to Fairfield four years ago. We have two children, both married, and two grandchildren. I hold a business undergraduate degree (cum laude) in finance and accounting and an MBA from Suffolk University in Boston. Introduced to real estate investment management at Harvard University over forty years ago, I was a member of the Board of Directors of the Harvard Credit Union. My career as a senior executive has encompassed financial and operational management, valuation, sales and leasing of all investmentgrade commercial property types throughout the United States. I earned my Certified Property Manager designation thirty-five years ago through the Institute of Real Estate Management, where I was president of the Northern Virginia chapter and earned the CPM of the Year award in 2001. For many years, I held principal real estate broker licenses in six states. I am a member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, a ruling elder, a member of the voice choir and co-chairman of the building and grounds committee. Our family business, founded almost twenty-five years ago, manages commercial condominium properties in Northern Virginia for private, institutional and corporate clients, some of whom we’ve been proud to serve for twenty years. Our company provides operational accounting, financial reporting, budget preparation and forecasting, property maintenance and capital improvement projects. I am very excited about this opportunity to contribute my skills and experience and share in the vision for the future growth and development of this outstanding financial institution. Leslie E. Ramsey My wife Barbara and I are natives of Waynesboro/ Augusta County and have been members of DCCU since 1977. After graduating from Waynesboro High School in 1960, I completed coursework in accounting with Jefferson Professional Institute in Charlottesville and furthered my education through coursework at the University of Virginia from 1966-1969. I joined Ntelos, Inc. in 1970 and enjoyed a 26-year career in managing customer service functions including Sales/Marketing, local Public Relations and Business Office Operations. I served on a number of State and National Telephone Industry committees and was President of the Virginia Telecommunications Industry Association from 1986-87. I am completing my 6th year of serving on the DCCU Board as a Director and the experience has been truly humbling and gratifying! I currently serve as Treasurer of the Board and I also chair the Board ALM committee. I would be honored and pleased to continue serving the membership of DCCU as a member of the Board of Directors as the Credit Union continues to grow and innovate in providing the latest, leading-edge services to its members. Debbie Clatterbuck I graduated from James Madison University in 1989 with a degree in Social Science and minors in Education and Psychology and returned to earn a Master of Education in 1994. The evolving awareness of the impact on learning that the relational dynamics between troubled students and teachers played in theirs and other’s success in the educational setting led to my pursuit of a degree in counseling. I graduated from Eastern Mennonite University in 2008 with a Master of Arts in Counseling. I began my professional career as a secondary education teacher and middle school assistant principal. I founded Family Educational Services, LLC (FES) on an educational model to assist with meeting the needs of children and their families. The education model was designed to embrace working with families through a strength based approach. Currently, I serve as the executive director of Family Educational Services, LLC (FES). I hold a Postgraduate Professional License with endorsements in History and Social Sciences, Middle School Principal and Secondary School Principal, and am a Licensed Professional Counselor. Additionally, I have taught at the collegiate level and volunteer in a variety of capacities within the community. My husband and I live in Rockingham County, and we have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.
