Our mom enjoyed working at Keiro, especially working with the Japanese residents since Japanese was her native tongue. She worked extremely hard her whole life, as did many Issei and Nisei of her generation. Her favorite things in life were her grandchildren, sewing, gardening, her sister and brother (long deceased), Keiro, and watching “I Love Lucy.” Michiko Nomoto and her grandchildren www.keiro.org 3 View Photos Online! www.keiro.org/photos-of-the-month www.facebook.com/keiro.iha www.twitter.com/keiroliving CEO Our Community’s Input in the Design of Medicare As part of the California MedCHAT Collaborative, Keiro Senior HealthCare is engaging our community in one of the most challenging issues that our country faces: the future of Medicare. “As policy-makers consider ways to address Medicare, we felt that it was important for our community to have its voices heard,” said Dianne Kujubu Belli, Keiro’s Chief Administrative Officer, who was recently named to the California MedCHAT Collaborative steering committee. What is MEDchat? The California MedCHAT Collaborative brings together 20 senior service organizations throughout the state to provide input into what Medicare should cover in future years. Led by the Center for Healthcare Decisions, a nonprofit, non-partisan organization that brings health policy issues to the public at large; and LeadingAge California, a state association serving non-profit aging and long-term care communities, MedCHAT is an in-person interactive discussion process during which the participants use a sophisticated computer-based simulation to create a Medicare plan that they would want for themselves and – as a group – a plan that would best serve everyone. The Center for Healthcare Decisions will compile all the results in a white paper which will be used to inform state and national policy leaders on the perspective of Californians on Medicare benefit design. When the State-wide results are compiled, we will have an understanding of how the Japanese American community views are similar or different from the rest of California. Keiro conducted eleven small discussion groups in partnership with the following community organizations: East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center, Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Orange County Buddhist Church, San Fernando Valley Japanese Community Center, Venice Japanese Community Center, and Wintersburg Presbyterian Church. Our Community’s Response Preliminary results from the discussion groups reveal that while 44% of the close to 120 participants were very/somewhat satisfied with the coverage Medicare Keiro conducted 11 MedCHAT sessions to gather input from community members throughout Southern California. currently provides, more than half were very concerned about the impact of Medicare on the federal budget. During the group discussions, a variety of ideas for reducing the impact of Medicare on the federal budget were explored. The ideas that were favored by the Keiro groups included: not covering expensive treatments if less expensive ones are available, reducing coverage for ineffective treatments, having wealthier Medicare users pay more, charging patients more if they don’t adopt healthier lifestyles, and requiring patients to use hospice when dying as opposed to intensive care units. “In trying to decide on a new plan, I was pleasantly surprised to see some consideration given to patient accountability (e.g. penalties) for their failure to follow recommendations for healthier living,” said one participant, Aileen, in the session at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute. “There were other aspects of the current plan that could benefit from changes, and participating in the program gave me this realization that I would not have had otherwise.” According to Mike Murase who participated in one of the earliest MedCHAT sessions, “I think it is very important and necessary for Keiro to provide health education and Genki Living in our communities. Especially with the continuing growth of the aging population, the more education and discussion, the better.” If your community organization, temple, or church is interested in hosting Keiro’s “When I’m 64 (or More) – Introduction to Medicare” or an education session on another health topic, please contact Kanako Kusano, health promotion specialist at kkusano@keiro.org. www.keiro.org 5 2014 Keiro Community Education Calendar Part of Keiro’s Health Literacy Program (HeLP) Hello! A Few Things You Need to Know for 2014 Tax Planning It may seem like you have all the time in the world before you need to start thinking about 2014 taxes, but it is never too early to get organized and have a plan. Here are some key tax provisions to keep in mind for 2014. Personal Exemption. The personal exemption for 2014 rises to $3,950. However, the exemption is subject to a phase-out that begins with adjusted gross incomes of $254,200 for individuals ($305,050 for married couples filing jointly). It phases out completely at $376,700 for individual taxpayers ($427,550 for married couples filing jointly). Standard Deduction. The standard deduction rises to $6,200 for individuals or those who are married but filing separately and $12,400 for married couples filing jointly. The standard deduction for heads of household rises to $9,100. Medical Deductions. You can claim deductions for medical expenses not covered by your health insurance that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income. If you are older than 65, you are allowed to deduct unreimbursed medical care expenses that exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. Additional Medicare Tax. The 0.9 percent additional Medicare tax applies to an individual’s wages, Railroad Retirement Tax Act compensation and self-employment income that exceeds a threshold amount based on the individual’s filing status. Taxpayers with more than $200,000 in earned income ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly) will pay an additional 0.9 percent Medicare tax on the excess. The tax doesn’t apply to retirement plan distributions or social security. New on Your W-2. Starting in 2014, you’ll see a new number on your W-2 form. The Affordable Care Act requires employers to report the cost of coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan on employees’ W-2 forms. This reporting is for informational purposes only, to show employees the value of their health care benefits. For more tax planning tips and other helpful information, visit www.keiro.org.
