Year No. 8 Edition No. 51 Stay fit through holidays with strength training ‘Making It Happen’ one Airman at a time By Kevin Gaddie By Brig. Gen. David Harris Team Eglin Public Affairs 96th Test Wing commander The free Muscle Max strength training class at the Fitness Annex is available to help anyone with base access maintain their fitness through the holiday season and year-round. “This class offers a full body, balanced workout,” said Alison DeCaro, health promotion coordinator at Eglin’s hospital and class instructor. “When someone comes to me wanting strength training to improve their fitness, I refer them to this class to learn proper form and technique.” The class targets the major muscle groups, utilizing dumbbells, body weight, medicine balls and weighted bars, all of which help with core stability and balance, said DeCaro, who has been teaching some form of the class here for 18 years. Tech. Sgt. Adrienne Tarin-Yatco, of the 96th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, has attended the class for two years. “I’m more of a cardio person,” she said. “I like to run a lot, but I also need to incorporate building and strengthening my muscles. The class helped target different parts of my body that I previously neglected.” DeCaro said the strength training class is great for someone just starting out, a service member needing a little help to pass their fitness test, or a retiree who wants to maintain fitness in their later years. Janet Torrey, wife of retired Earlier this year, I asked our former Command Chief Marcus Snoddy to work with our Public Affairs office to create a 96th Test Wing mission video that demonstrates our mission accomplishment as a unified wing. While the activation of the 96th Test Wing occurred more than two years ago, the transition to the largest wing in the Department of Defense raised many challenges we continue to work through even today. My goal is to see us move away from former organizational ties and focus on the 96th Test Wing as we set a path toward even greater success in the future. The video — and a related ongoing campaign — have been created to deliver the message of our united Test Wing and Now Enrolling for Fall Classes Kevin Gaddie | USAF Janet Torrey, wife of retired Air Force Lt. Col. Paul Torrey, performs dumbbell chest presses at the Muscle Max strength training class at the Fitness Annex at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The class is available to help anyone with base access maintain their fitness through the holiday season and year-round. Air Force Lt. Col. Paul Torrey, has maintained her strength training regimen for 12 years. “It keeps me in shape and healthy,” she said. “I’m getting older, and I need to stay flexible and active. I recommend this class to anyone.” DeCaro said physical activity and fitness is her passion. Staying physically fit decreases the chances for obesity; lowers stress, blood pressure and cholesterol levels; and promotes better eating habits, she added. The search for a solution for her chronic back pain brought Ghada Laroux, of the 782nd Test Squadron, to the class a year-and-a-half ago. “Since I’ve been coming to the class, I don’t have pain anymore,” she said. “My back muscles have gotten stronger. It’s an awesome class. I can’t wait for Tuesdays and Thursdays to get here.” DeCaro believes collective support makes strong individuals. “People seem to work out better in a group environment, when they’re supported by others,” DeCaro said. “They tend to push themselves harder in class, than they would if they were out there on their own.” Class sizes vary during the holiday season depending on schedules, said DeCaro. The average class size is 15 to 20 people, but DeCaro usually sees an increase after New Year’s Day. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 883-8020. I would like to thank all AFMC As we gather with friends and personnel for your exceptional dedi- family to celebrate, I encourage everyone to remember those who cannot be with their families and loved ones this holiday season. Today the Air Force has more than 24,000 Airmen — military and civilian — deployed to preserve the gifts of independence, freedom and democracy. Within Air Force Materiel Command, we have more than 1,100 personnel deployed. I am humbled by the service and sacrifice of these Airmen and their families. As a final note, please remember that this joyous time of year also brings increased risks and hazards, especially on the roads. By exercising appropriate risk management as you make your holiday plans, you help ensure a safe season for yourself and your family. Wolf and I wish you all a wonderful holiday and a happy new year. Our wing’s mission is to support the warfighter through the development and acquisition of warwinning weapons and to provide training resources for the warfighter. More than 25,000 Airmen, civilians and their families support this mission on any given day, and in order to succeed, every- one must play their part. Only when we all work together can we, “Make It Happen.” This means every group, squadron and unit is crucial to creating the framework of a successful test. Just look at some of the stats mentioned in the new video - the Child Development Center contributes 133,750 hours in taking care of our Airmen’s children, our maintenance crews load 1.5 million pounds of munitions every year, our Security Forces team spends more than 1.3 million hours securing our base and the numbers go on and on. Over the next six months, we will drive this message further by showcasing the efforts of all our 96th Test Wing squadrons and units through our base website and Team Eglin Facebook page. As the largest wing in the Air Force, it takes everyone’s contributions to fully support the warfighter and ac- complish our mission. So first, thank you for your contributions in making our 96th Test Wing one of the best in the Air Force. NICK TOMECEK | Daily News The Armament Directorate outlasted Security Forces Squadron in the flag football championship match Dec. 11 here to win the title in an overtime thriller, 25-24. The narrow victory marked the second consecutive championship win for EB. EB, wearing red jerseys, stuck to their running game, while SFS, in blue jerseys, threw the ball more. They were both solid on defense. However, neither team converted any of three extra point opportunities each. Also, neither team took advantage to score off interceptions in the second half. SFS’ Marcus Brown intercepted EB quarterback, Savier Stephens’, first pass of the first half and was stopped at the one-yard line. SFS quarterback, Nicholas Ott, then ran the ball in on the first play from scrimmage for a 6-0 lead. SFS scored again on their second possession, finishing a five-play drive at 5:13, with a one-yard shovel pass from Ott to Zerrick Haymond to widen the lead, 12-0. EB finally got on the scoreboard at the 3:25 mark, when Stevens connected on a touchdown pass to Steve Jones, narrowing the gap to 12-6. We’re going to keep applying the pressure and win this game.” EB was determined to come back from the 12-point deficit. “We’ve got a short-term memory,” said Dante Donahoo, team captain. “We’ll do what we’ve been doing all season - go back to the basics and play good ball.” EB mounted their second half comeback by sticking to their ground game. A team 2112062 N ICEVILLE — Chris Sehman called it on Thursday, Dec. 11. Air Force would whip Army, and then they’d whip Navy. After an inconsequential game between the other two, they would be awarded the Helen Back Cup, winners of the second straight Boot Bowl. But that’s not the point, is it? The point is that more than $15,000 was raised for The Fisher House. The point is that somewhere around 1,000 spectators would matriculate in and out Niceville’s Eagle Stadium, showing their support for at least one of the three military branches. The point, ultimately, is that, on a day where, yes, there were literal winners and losers in the games themselves, every local military branch won. “It’s a great event,” said Kim Henderson, the executive director of The Fisher House, which received all proceeds from the event. “We serve the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, and this is a great way to bring them all together and support The Fisher House and have a good time.” “Last year it was a lot bigger than everybody expected,” Army tight end Chris Shortt said. “It wasn’t hyped up like it was this year. For those of us who played last year, we knew it would be a lot bigger. “There wasn’t a Harley last year.” Yes, Boot Bowl II featured a variety of new twists, including a Harley giveaway, which added to the grand total of funds raised. Sehman, the owner of Helen Back Café and brains behind the event, overhauled the entire day, adding sideline reporters, TV crews and whimsical play-by-play announcing from Rob Brown and Nick Allegretto, among several others. By Kevin Gaddie Team Eglin Public Affairs Cannot be combined with any other offer, discount, coupon, etc. Exp. 1-16-15 2112426 Northwest Florida Daily News “We’ve got more people here than last year, more sponsors, we’re going to raffle off that Harley,” Sehman said. “The real goal is about raising money.” This weekend, the first after the close of the college football regular season, is typically labeled Army-Navy weekend. It is arguably — though not so when speaking to any in attendance at the Boot Bowl — the biggest rivalry in college football. Sehman is not the first to put on a flag football game mirroring the annual game. There is one in Fort Meade, Md., just down the road from the Naval Academy, that is in its 15th year running. He may be, though, the first to include Air Force in the tradition. “It’s an Air Force town,” he said. “It’s their field.” And the Falcons made sure everyone knew it. They shut out Army, 34-0, in the opener at 10 a.m. and quelled a Navy upset bid in the second game, rendering the third and supposedly biggest game, Army-Navy, moot in the grand scheme of things. “We want to make sure we’re not the babies,” Air Force quarterback Craig Wilson said. “We just like to come out here and show these Army, Navy boys how it’s done. “It’s always nice to come out, play football with the other services, raise a lot of money for the Fisher House charity.” As halftime of the Air ForceNavy game approached, with Army needing a Navy win, Shortt and Black Knight wide receiver Matt Royalty were asked if they had it in them to root for a Navy football team in order to preserve their chances of winning. Shortt laughed. “Absolutely not.” Even in a charity flag football game, some things never change. TOBACCO PRICES RISING – The authorization bill also blocks any attempt to ban sale of tobacco products on base but also narrows the price discounts. Cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco are not to be sold on base at prices lower than the most competitive prices in the local community. Impacted will be Army and Air Force exchanges and commissaries where tobacco products still can be sold five percent below the most competitive price off base. In 2012 the Navy Department ordered Navy and Marine Corps stores to raise tobacco prices to match competitive local prices. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus earlier this year floated the idea of pulling all Get a Free Invisalign Scan! Try Our Invisalign Simulator! FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION with Dr. Stubbs BLUEWATER BAY 4633 E. That led House Republicans to insert bill language to block such a move. But in a deal cut with Senate conferees last week, the bill also declares that on-base tobacco prices cannot be set lower than the most competitive price off base. About 25 percent of military folks say they smoke, a rate higher than found among civilian peers. Studies blame this in part on tobacco discounts. Critics also find the 5-percent rule ineffective, arguing that discounts at Army and Air Force stores actually average about 20 percent when price comparisons include all retail tobacco outlets. The Defense Department estimates it spends $1.6 billion a year on tobacco-related medical care. It is committed to lowering tobacco usage sharply by 2024. On-base tobacco sales, however, totaled $711.4 million in 2012 and generated profits of $125.7 million. That’s money the military plows back into its morale, welfare and recreation programs. CHILD CUSTODY PROTECTION – The new defense policy bill also amends the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act (SCRA) to help protect service members from losing custody of children due solely to military deployment. Rep. Mike Turner (ROhio) has fought for this for almost a decade, facing stiff opposition from family advocates, lawyers and Defense officials who say his bill is a solution in search of a problem. They argue it won’t help anyone and could confuse military families and drive up their litigation costs. The bill modifies SCRA to say unequivocally that state courts must not use current or future deployments as a sole reason to deny members child custody. It also says length of temporary custody orders when a custodial parent deploys should be for a period justified by deployment, not longer. Attorney Mark E. Sullivan, an Army retiree and family law expert who wrote the military child-custody law for North Carolina, said neither he nor Turner nor the Department of Defense See commissary page 7 Car, Truck & SUV Accessories 2112072 Magnolia Grill that these changes should await the final report of the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission, due in February. Appropriators echoed that point in restoring commissary funding. COLA MINUS 1 PERCENT – The plea to “wait for the commission” was used again in the authorization bill to delay adoption of a COLA-minus-1 percent formula aimed at dampening retirement costs of future members. Congress last year replaced the pearl of full cost-of-living adjustments in retirement for members who entered service on or after Jan. 1, 2014. Their COLAs, 20 years hence, were to be set a percentage point below annual inflation. The new bill moves the date of that change to impact only members entering on or after Jan. 1, 2016, giving Congress time to meld this idea with commission recommendations for reshaping future retirement. This week conferees shaping a final defense appropriations bill that is part of a massive spending package for the entire federal government restored $90 million of the commissary budget cut in the authorization bill. “This essential funding ensures that DeCA…will continue delivering a core benefit of military compensation,” said Patrick Nixon, president of the American Logistics Association. ALA represents manufacturers and vendors of products sold in military stores. In rejecting almost every Defense Department proposal this year to hold down personnel costs, lawmakers said time after time 2112142 House and Senate conferees negotiating a package to fund the Department of Defense through September 2015 have protected commissary operations by restoring 90 percent of a planned $100 million cut. Once again lawmakers thwarted a cost-saving initiative targeting military compensation and endorsed by the Joint Chiefs as a way to dampen personnel costs so more dollars can be spent on training, weapon buys and other readiness accounts being victimized by arbitrary “sequestration” cuts. Only last week House and Senate conferees on a different bill, the 2015 defense authorization act, unveiled a deal to lower the Defense Commissary Agency annual $1.3 billion budget to $1.2 billion. DeCA said it could absorb the knock without impacting customer savings or services. So, Sullivan asked, “why put a law on the books that isn’t needed and can only cause problems?” Past defense secretaries opposed the bill on advice family law experts who said it needlessly would create a right of federal court review in custody cases, driving up legal costs for families, bringing custody disputes before judges having little family law experience and tipping outcomes in favor of service members over the interests of children. But after Turner briefed current secretary Chuck Hagel, the department dropped its opposition. The language also was modified to make clear that federal courts still have no right of action in child custody matters. “We think this is still unnecessary and potentially harmful,” said Joyce Wessel Raezer, executive director of National Military Family Association, with language added that could “confuse both service members and judges.” FAITH INDEPENDENT BAPTIST CHURCH 1309 Valparaiso Blvd. • Niceville 678-4387 LEV HUMPHRIES, PASTOR • Nursery • Bus • Junior Church • Near Eglin AFB Sunday School.............10 a.m. Preaching.....................11a.m. Sunday...........................6p.m. Wednesday Night...........7 p.m. 2112855 1128428 Commissary $$$ restored; base tobacco prices rising Eglin Briefs Page | THE EGLIN DISPATCH | Friday, December 19, 2014 C LA S S IF IE D S It’s easy to place an in-colum n classified ad in the Eglin Dispatch.
