November 25, 2013, Issue 373 Shawn Parr Talks Nash Nights Live Cumulus will take another significant step in the expansion of its Nash media brand with the Jan. 6 launch of Nash Nights Live With Shawn Parr across all of its Country stations. Parr, who spent most of the last five years hosting mornings on KKGO/Los Angeles and the same on KZLA before that, will make the move to Nashville to helm to the new program. Country Aircheck caught up with him to find out how the show was born, what to expect and how he plans to maintain those yearround golf games. CA: So just how easy was it to talk a lifelong Southern Californian into moving to Nashville? SP: (Laughs) It actually wasn’t that hard. I know so many people there. Do you know how many times I’ve heard the question, Shawn Parr “When are you going to move to Nashville?” Every time a publicist calls for an artist interview they’re on me. That, or my artist buddies are asking, “When are you coming to Nashville so we can play golf?” When the opportunity presented itself to go nationwide and to have that golden ticket to the chocolate factory, as I like to call it, I just couldn’t say no. You do know you can’t play golf 12 months a year here, right? That’s true. And that’s why I’ve structured into my contract that I need to be in a sunny, warm place at least once a month! How did this opportunity came about? It seems like this was the best kept secret in the industry. My agent saw the opportunity, presented it to me and asked if I’d like to take a meeting. (continued on page 7) The Grand Tour: Nashville is a close-knit town indeed, judging by this “Reps In Roam” vacation pic at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy today (11/25). Pictured (l-r) are Capitol’s Page Elliott, Big Machine’s Kris Lamb, EMI Nashville’s Mike Krinik, Stoney Creek’s Samantha Borenstein, Ruby Cortez and Warner/WAR’s Raffaella Braun. The group is touring Italy, Greece and Turkey through Dec. 8. Jones Shows Up Big When they opened Playin’ Possum! The Final No Show Friday night (11/22) with a video of the late George Jones performing “No Show Jones,” the crowd reacted as if they expected the man himself to take the stage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Instead, 112 artists performed 48 songs over four hours, paying tribute to Jones through an insistence that his influence will forever resonate in country music. Big & Rich opened by driving riding lawnmowers onstage to sing “Love Bug” before driving back off. Kid Rock followed with “White Lightning” before Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase, the first of six emcees for the night, took the stage. ©2013 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. The sole exception being Daryle Singletary’s performance of “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair,” the sentiment of which Little Jimmy Dickens evidently did not share. Artists spanning seven decades paid their respects, from Stonewall Jackson and Bobby Bare to Janie Fricke and Emmylou Harris to Dierks Bentley, Eric Church and Thompson Square. Charlie Daniels amped up the crowd with “Me And Jesus” and tossed his bow to Jones’ wife Nancy in the front row when he was finished. Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Colin Raye, T.G. Shepard and the Oak Ridge Boys were included in the first half of the show. Unexpected performers included Styx’s Tommy Shaw, who played “She Thinks I Still Care,” and Megadeth joined by Jamey Johnson for “Wild Irish Rose.” Sam Moore sang “Blues Man” right to Nancy. Emcees succeeding Crook & Chase for 30-minute shifts included Larry’s Country Diner host Larry Black, and WSM’s Ralph Emery, Keith Bilbrey and Bill Cody. The Jones Boys Band, made up of musicians who’d played with Jones for years, backed up almost every performance. The oddest moment of the night came just before the intermission, when actor John Voight asked for prayers to help Randy Travis with his recovery, urged the crowd to stand, hold Tribute Performers Page 4 PA G E T H R E E P I C Cart-Men: Brady Seals (r) and Rob Kelley show you youngsters how we used to play music in the mid-’90s at the WIXY/Champaign, IL studio. The second half of the show opened with a three-song medley of “Cold, Cold Heart,” “The Right Left Hand” and “She’s My Rock” performed by Eddy Raven, John Michael Montgomery, Lee Greenwood, Mark Collie and Ken Mellons. Lorrie Morgan, Brad Paisley, Jessi Colter and Shooter Jennings, Vince Gill and Patty Loveless were among the performances that followed. You almost couldn’t hear the beginning of the song over the cheers from the crowd when George Strait came out to perform “The Grand Tour.” Martina McBride joined him next for “Golden Ring.” The excitement continued to grow when the final performer of the night, Alan Jackson, came on for “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” You could hear the entire crowd singing along even before he invited Nancy Jones on stage and asked the audience to do so. And as they walked off stage and the room went dark, Jackson touched the chair, which rocked in its spotlight as the night’s final image. –Jess Wright ©2013 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. Kudos! Page 5 Miranda and Keith Know Shave November: LOGS No Shave November’s top fundraising team thus far has no apparent connection to Country radio or Nashville. So just who are these LOGS guys? “We’re a network of law firms around the country,” says VP/ CIO Tom Bradham, who organized the group’s efforts out of the company’s Chicago offices. “We provide back-office services, IT, accounting and HR functions.” Bradham’s exposure to the NSN concept came in college at the University of South Carolina. “The concept then was support for testicular and prostate cancer. My staff got interested in doing it as a challenge internally this year, but when I did a web search to see if there was anything organized, no one was doing it. The only thing that popped up was St. Jude.” Tom Bradham Aside from some personal experience supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Bradham says the directness of the effort was attractive. “Our understanding is that every penny goes to St. Jude. There’s no management or committees involved, and we really like that.” LOGS currently has 19 participants, including its CEO. “My entire staff agreed that if he completed the month without shaving, we would all donate $25 on his behalf. The company will also probably do a donation when all is said and done. Our goal is $10,000 and we’re over six, so we’re going to get there through corporate or individual efforts.” Beyond the donations, the LOGS team has also become an advocate for the event. “We’re reached out to some primary vendors and challenged them to jump on the team,” Bradham says. “We actually have five or six developers in the Ukraine who are doing it with us, so we’ve made it an international event, too.” Thank Bradham for his team’s efforts here. –Chuck Aly Sony’s Angie Johnson puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WKKX and WIL/St. Louis. My dad had a car rental business and he’d listen while he worked. He’d be under the hood of a car. I’d be holding the flashlight and handing him tools. It was while singing along to Travis Tritt and Patty Loveless that I learned how Angie to do my own oil changes. Johnson I’m still waiting for that magical moment when I get to hear myself on the radio. I plan on screaming like a banshee when it happens. Then cry and then get jiggy. I’ll never forget the time Storme Warren asked me to step on stage at the ACM Awards to sing Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker” acappella. It was a total spur of the moment thing, but as soon as I started, the audience sang along and I totally forgot about the fact that I couldn’t breathe in my dress. If I don’t have my iPod when I travel, I go insane. I need moments of solitude to recharge. I like to put my headphones on and go into my own little musical world, usually while I’m doing my hair and make-up. It helps me stay centered and not kill people. I can’t walk out of a truck stop without grabbing something to drink. I’m a little obsessive when it comes to drinks. I always have a bottle of water, some tea or a coffee drink and a fruity something or other with me at all times. There’s no place like home, but I had to be stuck somewhere it would be Manteo, NC. I just did a show there with Scotty McCreery. The people were so lovely and so was the town. And it didn’t hurt that the beach is right there, too. When there’s downtime I get stuck playing Words With Friends. I have 11 different games going at any given moment. I just played “alpaca” for 68 points. Boom. The best advice I ever got was from my Dad. It’s a simple little concept with a different spin. He told me to always be myself. He said that if I tried to act like someone else people wouldn’t like me, because they’d never really know me. I do something redneck everyday. I go places in my pajamas and pink slippers. I check the mail barefoot in my bathrobe. I holler at strangers out the car window when I drive down the street. I just used the word “waller” in a sentence. Redneck is a way of life. ©2013 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. Sign up free at w w w.countr yaircheck .com. Let’s see where this goes.” Then there was a meeting between my agent, myself and John Dickey around late August or early September, and the next you thing you know my life was changing. You’ve done mornings for a long time. What we can expect of a night show? They want a morning show at night so, as far as content, that’s what we’ll be doing. It just won’t be at four in the morning, which is a welcome relief after so many years. And it’s going to be very listener-interactive. I’m not sure they totally understood my work ethic and how excited and high-energy I am. If you combine OCD, ADHD, and a seven-year-old kid who’s had too much candy at Halloween, that’s kind of where I come from. But the coolest part is being in the middle of that Nashville vibe with the artists at your fingertips, and to be able to do it nationwide and with the Nash brand. [Cumulus] is so excited about what they have and what they want to do with it. To be on the ground floor of something that’s going to be so incredibly huge was just a no-brainer. Do you plan to do the show live every night and how many songs an hour will you be running? I will definitely be live every night and all night. And we’ve got the clock up already and they’re looking at 12 to 14 songs an hour. Page 7 MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Clear Channel’s WSTH/Columbus, GA & WOBB/Albany, GA PD Casey Carter discusses her most influential artists, concerts, songs and albums: 1. Elton John & Kiki Dee/Don’t Go Breaking My Heart; Captain & Tennille/Muskrat Love: I had these two 45s and a portable record player as a kid and followed my mom and dad around Casey Carter the house playing these two songs back and forth while pretending to be a DJ. My playlist soon grew to include Elton’s “Philadelphia Freedom” and Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” I had a tight playlist ... and really patient parents. 2. Queensryche: My high school love loved Queensryche and turned me on to them when Operation: Mindcrime was out. Empire came out and we listened to that incessantly. And then he was killed in a car wreck. When the next few CDs came out, I would buy them the day they were released and take them straight to the graveyard for the first listen. When I was at WHOK/Columbus, OH, the MD at our sister Rock station hooked me up with backstage passes to a show so I could meet them. As cliché as it sounds, all I wanted to do was thank them for their music. It helped me through a very hard time of my life. I am still grateful. 3. Vince Gill, Ohio State Fair, Columbus, 1997: Vince Gill’s dad Stan was a judge in Columbus and had recently passed. While performing “Go Rest High On That Mountain,” he broke down in the middle of the song. Not a dry eye in the place. I will never forget the pure emotion of Vince and thousands of fans. 4. BR5-49, mid-’90s: I had been on a mission to see one of their concerts, and finally got to on my birthday. 5. Zac Brown Band: I’ve seen them three times and every time I have been in awe of their musicianship. Just ... wow. •A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Justin Timberlake, 20/20 Experience. I’ve heard “Suit and Tie” and that’s the extent of it. I want to hear it, I just haven’t. •An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything by David Bowie. Don’t get it, don’t like it. •One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “You’re Not The Best” by Charlie Robison •One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: “Rockstar” by Nickleback. Who wants to admit to liking Nickleback? ©2013 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. Sign up free at w w w.countr yaircheck .com. S end news to news@countr yaircheck .com TAYLOR SWIFT CONGRATS ON 4 BIG AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS!!!! REDPOWER UP NOW! November 25, 2013 The music will absolutely be the star. Country music is so hot right now. Everybody is putting out quality stuff and that is what’s so great. Do you know who will be handling music? That’s a really good question and we’re really still putting everything together, even the team itself. So that’s really in the beginning stages. You worked solo at KKGO, but you’ll have a team for this show? We’re hiring a complete team – sidekick, producers, the whole thing. I’m interviewing some people, [Cumulus] is sending me some people and I’m bringing in some of my own people. One of the things that sold it for me was to have John Dickey say, “I want to be in the Shawn Parr business.” He said, “Look, we want you to build your team. You know what you’re doing.” To have that kind of support is unbelievable. Cumulus says the show will be on the road a lot. How often are we talking and from where? They want to be involved with everything I do, and I’m busy with all kinds of things. Right after we launch, we’re back in Los Angeles on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, and there’s the Academy Of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas. I do some big some big charity events each year in Cabo San Lucas, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They want to be there live and even have me take listeners with me. They just said, “Wherever you are, we want to be.” If there’s a big country music festival on the East Coast, let’s go. If Southern California’s doing something like Stagecoach, let’s go. We want to be a part of everything and we have the ability to do that. Cumulus built a custom studio for America’s Morning Show in Nashville; will Nash Nights Live get the same treatment? Absolutely and it’s going to be phenomenal. Cumulus asked, “What kind of studio do you envision? We want to build it around you.” I actually took some blueprints of a studio I worked in when I was KZLA as an example. We had a big conference call and sent them all the stuff, and they’re building it from the ground up. You should just see this thing. It’s going to have the lights and cameras, everything. We fully expect to stream live with HD video cameras. They were just showing me some pictures of the furniture and I couldn’t believe it. The legs of some of the furniture are going to be made out of guitar necks. They’re just going above and beyond. What kind of feedback have you gotten since the show was announced? All the record labels have reached out, and artists, too, to Page 10 CHECK OUT Danielle Bradbery Danielle Bradbery (Big Machine) The season four winner of The Voice offers 11 tracks, including single “The Heart Of Dixie.” “It feels like I just walked off The Voice stage so it’s crazy to think I’m about to release my first album,” Bradbery says. “I couldn’t be more proud of the music we’ve created. I am so excited to get all the songs into the hands of the fans who gave me this amazing opportunity in the first place!” Florida Georgia Line Here’s To The Good Times...This Is How We Roll (Republic Nashville) The deluxe version of their debut album includes five new songs, the remix of “Cruise” featuring Nelly, and official music videos with behind-the-scenes footage. Yeah, I’m leaving California for Nashville and the weather’s a little bit different, but the family is exactly the same. It’s all the people that I’ve worked with in the industry. I’m so excited to get there and get started. I know it’s still way ahead of me, but I’m taking a trip out there the week of Thanksgiving to meet the family, get a real estate broker − and let’s face it, to do the most important thing − find out where the best golf courses are!
