Issue 47 Music Edition Country’s Magnificent Seven – Plus One Like most folks who’ve spent the bulk of their professional lives in Country radio, I drive the family nuts when taking one of those infamous “driving vacations.” It seems no one can quite figure out why I scan for another Country station as soon as the music starts playing, or why I stop on only those stations where someone is talking or a promo is airing. Well, that was pretty much the scene once again last week as we drove from Nashville to Pawley’s Island, SC for a mini-family reunion and a little R&R – or should that be r&r? Now, let me assure you there’s a lot of Country radio to be heard traveling 9 ½ hours on I-40 and I-26. Heading eastbound from Music City, you come across some of Country radio’s most legendary stations in Knoxville, Asheville, Greenville, Columbia, Charleston and Myrtle Beach. And that doesn’t even take into account the recent Country launches in those cities or all of the Country stations in assorted small towns within “earshot” of the major highways. The first thing that strikes you as the “scan” mode progresses on the car radio is the number of stops made on Country stations. While you expect that in TN, NC and SC, the huge number of Country choices still boggles the mind. The other thing that amazes me is the huge signals some of these stations possess – most notably WSSL/Greenville and WCOS/Columbia. July 16, 2007 Listening to more than 25 Country stations along the way, the homogenous nature of today’s Country format became very apparent. Not only did I hear the same songs (do I sound like a civilian listener?), I heard many of the same artists over and over. Returning to the office today, I checked Mediabase 24/7 to see exactly how much of a station’s music comes from the format’s top artists. I did a similar survey about seven years ago while at R&R. Back then, the “Magnificent Seven” of Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, George Strait and Shania Twain accounted for 32% of a Country station’s music over the course of a week. (continued on page 6) Radio News Programming: As first reported in Monday’s Country Aircheck Today, Clear Channel/San Antonio OM and AC KQXT PD George King has added PD duties for Country KAJA following last Friday’s exit of KAJA PD/morning co-host Clayton Allen (clayton97@gmail.com or 210-561-6041 -- CAT, 7/13). Country’s Magnificent Eight (continued from page 1) In the current analysis, there are eight artists clearly separated from the pack. They are, in order of airplay since Jan. 1, 2007: Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. (Urban’s 206,514 total spins ranked eighth, versus the 168,877 total spins for ninth-place Brooks Page 6 & Dunn.) The total spins for those eight artists represent 29% of all Country airplay since the first of the year. As long as we were rummaging around in Mediabase, it also seemed to be a good opportunity for a mid-year music check-up. The most-played song of the year thus far is Rodney Atkins’ “Watching You.” The rest of the Top 5: Carrie Underwood’s “Wasted,” Billy Currington’s “Good Directions,” Sugarland’s “Settlin’” and Kenny Chesney’s “Beer In Mexico.” Songs in the Top 50 for the year thus far by artists never having posted a Top 15 song before include Jake Owen’s “Startin’ With Me” (#21), Jason Michael Carroll’s “Alyssa Lies” (#29), Bucky Covington’s “A Different World” (#33) and Kellie Pickler’s “I Wonder” (#46). The Top 5 Gold tunes are Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You,” Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman,” Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker’s “When The Sun Goes Down,” Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffet’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” and Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places.” Oh – one other thing the extended family doesn’t quite get is why, while on vacation, I’d drive 45 minutes to go see a country artist in a country nightclub. After all, they wondered, don’t I do enough of that when I’m “working?” Regardless, I had a great time at the “Beach Wagon” in Myrtle Beach last Thursday night. Went up to see Craig Morgan’s show – I love seeing artists outside of Nashville. Spent some time with Craig on the bus and had the chance to hang with WYAK PD Joey Dee and middayer Boomer. Thanks to all for their hospitality.
