Issue Seven Music Edition A Look Inside The Newest Wolf Den KWLI (Willie)/Denver has gone up in smoke after 10 months of “Wide Open Country.” The CBS Radio outlet is now “92.5, The Wolf -- Denver’s New Country Choice.” Although not used as a liner or in a promo, a station press release promises “the best new country music artists of today and the brightest new stars of tomorrow.” The music is decidedly current and promoted with liners including “A new breed of Country has arrived,” “More new Country” and “Fewer commercials and more new Country.” During a 90minute Aircheck session in Monday afternoon drive, four of 22 songs were pre-2000: Tim McGraw’s “Indian Outlaw” (1994), Collin Raye’s “I Can Still Feel You” (1998), Faith Hill’s “Wild One” and Alan Jackson’s “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow.” No sign of songs that had been in Willie’s library, like Stevie Nicks & Don Henley “Leather and Lace,” John Cougar Mellencamp “Jack & Diane,” Neil Young “Heart Of Gold” or Doobie Brothers “Black Water.” The Wolf aggressively promotes “40-in-a-row Wolf-a-thons” -- which are 40-minute music sweeps, not 40 songs in a row. It plays 40 minutes of music, takes a break, plays two more songs -- leading with a mid-90s cut -- takes a break, and then launches into another 40 minutes of music.
