Issue 14 Music Edition UMG Takes Turkey Bowl XV; Capitol Gobbles Trophy The 15th Annual Turkey Bowl was played Saturday in Nashville, with UMG prevailing for the 12th year of the music business football festival. Clad in pink jerseys -- insert own joke here -- UMG bested EMI Christian Music Group 21-8 in the championship game. In the first round, EMI Christian Music Group beat SESAC, Capitol edged Sony BMG (7-6), UMG beat SOLID (24-2) and William Morris got a bye. To get into the finals, EMICMG beat Capitol (26-20) and UMG defeated William Morris (28-6). UMG tour press specialist Kelly Russell was named MVP after dominating from her defensive tackle position. She registered over 10 sacks in the tourney, including big plays during a couple goal-line stands in the final game. UMG suffered two key injuries: UMG A&R staffer Brian Wright broke his clavicle and MCA VP/ Promotion Royce Risser suffered torn rib cartilage. Whined Risser on Monday, “If I sneeze I pass out from pain. That simple. Trace Adkins is basking in the glory of fans voting him as one of three finalists in the People’s Choice Awards as “Favorite Male Artist” (all genres). It’s no wonder the fans have picked him as their choice, he has been performing to sold-out crowds all over the country on his headlining CMT Tour. Fans snatched up 115,000 copies of his new album Dangerous Man it’s first week making it a #1 selling album. He was also chosen by People magazine as one of the 25 Hottest stars in country music. Keith Urban Debuts at #1 with “Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing” On the heels of Be Here (4x platinum) and Golden Road (3x platinum) Keith scans over 270,000 units the first week with the release of Love, Pain, & the whole crazy thing. Urban’s new single, “Stupid Boy,” currently sits at #38* R&R/BDS and #43* CA/MB and Page is #1 Most Added on both charts. Adding to Urban’s accomplishments this month is his third consecutive win for “Male Vocalist” at the CMA Awards. Dierks Bentley - Another Soaring Year in 2006 The New York Times says, “He’s got about as much momentum as anyone in the business.” The Chicago Tribune claims, “Bentley is the next guy on deck for superstar status in the genre.” It’s been another stellar year for the Phoenix native. He received his first Male Vocalist of the Year nomination at both the ACM Awards and the CMA Awards this year. Personalities: As first reported in the Nov. 16 Country Aircheck Today, KYGO/Denver morning cohost Jonathan Wilde has left partners Kelly Ford and Mudflap McGrew for cross town CBS Radio Country competitor KWLI (The Wolf). Wilde will sit out a noncompete and will do afternoons early next year. PM driver Matthew Blades heads to middays to replace Tad Swenson who will remain with the station in an asyet undetermined role. Meanwhile, back at market leading KYGO, Ford and McGrew have each signed new three-year deals with the Lincoln Financial station. Wilde and Ford teamed for nine years; McGrew joined them five years ago. The trio was named the CMA Large Market Personalities of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2006. Wilson Broadcasting will flip Adult Standards KKGO-AM (1260)/Los Angeles to Country on Dec. 1. It will join the company’s XSUR/San Diego (licensed to Tijuana), Page which adopted Country in late October, in simulcasting Dial-Global’s Mainstream Country Format. Thursday, Nov. 16: Clear Channel announced it agreed to be acquired by an investor group led by privateequity firms Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital Partners. The deal totals $26.7 billion -- $18.7 billion in cash and another $8 billion in debt repayment. In a separate statement, CC also announced plans to sell its select radio holdings outside of the Top 100 markets, as well as its entire television division. On the block are 448 of its almost 1200 stations and 42 TV outlets. Among those being sold are 60 rated and 30 non-rated markets. Those 90 markets include about 80 Country outlets that will at some point come under new ownership. United Stations Radio Networks is offering two holiday specials, with Heidi Newfield hosting the Thanksgiving program Country Heroes 2006 and Jack Ingram hosting the year end Country Winners 2006. Total unique visitors for the week were up 55%, according to the network, along with a 19% increase in streams through its broadband service Loaded. She asphyxiated following a grand mal seizure brought on by the prescription anti-depressant Wellbutrin. The ruling brings some closure for KUZZ staffers after Garcia’s death, initially ruled accidental, was declared a homicide in December ‘05. UMG/Nashville VP/Sales Kelly Keiber Rich has been hired as VP/Sales & Marketing for Big Machine.
