Issue 49 Music Edition Where Are The Women? We received a number of notes following our July 16, 2007 Music Edition lead story about eight artists being responsible for 29% of all Country airplay. Perhaps the most FAQ from those seeing that the top eight were Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban was, “Where are the women?” While that’s always a good question, for our purposes we will stick to that question as it specifically relates to airplay. Also for our purposes, because Sugarland’s sound is predominantly female with Jennifer Nettles’ lead vocals (no offense to Kristian Bush), we are including the duo in this discussion of female airplay (again, no offense, Kristian). All that said, the Top 10 Women, with their overall rank in parentheses, are: Sugarland (10), Carrie Underwood (11), Martina McBride (15), Faith Hill (25), Taylor Swift (29), Sara Evans (31), Jo Dee Messina (39), the Wreckers (40), Shania Twain (41) and LeAnn Rimes (44). According to airplay measured by Mediabase 24/7, these 10 women generate 13% of all Country radio airplay (Current, Recurrent and Gold) since January 1, 2007. And, for those preferring to compare apples-to-apples, the top eight females yield 11% of all Country airplay, almost one third that delivered (continued on page 4) by the top eight guys. July 30, 2007 Radio News Personalities: Cox KCYY/San Antonio midday host Megan Bishop exited last week as the company finalizes the consolidation of its cluster in the city. S e n d n e ws to n e ws @ co u ntr ya i rc h e c k . co m July 30, 2007 Country Aircheck Music Edition Produced by songwriter/producer Michael Curtis and Alabama’s Teddy Gentry, the 16-song collection features artists including Diamond Rio, Rascal Flatts, Emerson Drive and Rebecca Lynn Howard performing newer songs heard by millions in church services each week. Based on Time Life’s success with both worship music and country, Curtis approached the company with the idea to merge the two. The next step was enlisting Gentry as co-producer. “Teddy is a great brother of mine and I just felt he should help me produce it,” Curtis says. “He called some friends, I called some friends and we started booking sessions.” The results exceeded Gentry’s expectations. “I was hesitant at first because I cut my teeth on all the old hymns and wasn’t as familiar with the newer stuff,” he says. “But nine out of 10 of the first songs we picked ended up being the ones the artist recorded. That made me feel like we did a good job as producers matching artists with songs.” For Time Life Executive Producer Mitch Peyser, the combination is a natural. “Like many great projects a lot of things came together with good timing,” he says. “Time Life has had tremendous success with both country and worship music collections. “We did a Songs 4 Worship album with Integrity Music (2002) that blew the lid off things. We brought in a million new customers in a year. The first volume sold two million copies and the series as a whole has sold close to 10 million. And we’ve always been known for great country collections.” A country addition in the Songs 4 Worship series is new ground, and required new recordings. “We’re the first ones out there with country artists of this stature doing praise and worship songs,” Peyser says. “And we knew these had to be new recordings because they don’t already exist. There are country sounding Christian songs, but there aren’t any recordings of major country artists doing the Page 4 Birthdays Tuesday (7/31) - Gary McCoy (garymccoy@clearchannel.com) Wednesday (8/1) - George Ducas, Charlie Kelly, Steve Miller, Gary Murdock (gary.murdock@us51country.com) Mark Janese, (markjanese@brokenbowrecords.com) Thursday (8/2) - Hank Cochran, David DeBolt, Chris Stacey (cstacey@hurricanepromo.com), Joyce Rizer (joyce.rizer@ xmradio.com), Barry Landis, Jon Anthony (jon.anthony@ xmradio.com) Friday (8/3) - Dean Sams, Randy Scruggs, Tony Conway (tconway@blanash.com), Ted Wagner (twagner@ montagemusicgroup.com), Shanna Strassberg Saturday (8/4) - Les Acree (lesacree@yahoo.com), Tammy Brown Sunday (8/5) - Terri Clark, Vern Gosdin, Mark O’Connor, the late Sammi Smith; Larry Franklin; Austin James; Tim Nichols; Paul Orr (paul.orr@cumulus.com); Matt Valley (matt.valley@ anchoragemediagroup.com); Tim Wilson (timwilsonprod@aol. com), Sherri Garrett (smug@aol.com) Monday (8/6) - Mark Dufresne (Confederate Railroad), Peggy and Patsy Lynn, Lisa Stewart, Kathy Allmand, Brad Helton big praise and worship songs heard in churches across the country.” The Time Life “full 360” marketing and distribution plan includes the kind of direct response television campaign for which the company is known, as well as Christian marketplace and traditional retail efforts. Curtis is hopeful that Country radio will join the album’s artists in supporting the project. “The secular industry may not know how this music is filling stadiums and arenas, but the artists on this album have been a joy to work with,” he says. “They’re all posting items about it on their websites. I’ve talked to some Country radio people who feel programmers will embrace this. There’s certainly an opportunity with the Sunday morning shows.” © 2007 Co u nt r y Airch ec k™ — All r i g hts re s e r ve d. Women & Airplay (continued from page 1) Perhaps most remarkable about this list is the high rankings by women without a large body of Gold. All eight of the men have been around for a while and have a number of songs generating spins. However, four of the top 10 women – Sugarland (no offense, Kristian), Carrie, Taylor and the Wreckers -- have been around a relatively short time and don’t have a lot of older titles contributing to their totals. Taylor Swift’s inclusion in the top 10 is especially noteworthy, © 2007 Co u nt r y Airch ec k™ — All r i g hts re s e r ve d. It must also be noted that skewing these figures somewhat is the lack of a “hit single” on the radio in the last seven months by some of these artists. In the stat world, spins from current hits, and to some degree, Hot Recurrents, dwarf the spins received from old Gold. That accounts, to some degree, for Reba McEntire coming in at No. 45 and Trisha Yearwood at No. 55. Also of interest is the disparity in airplay among even our top 10 women. Sugarland leads with 168,765 plays and is closely followed by Carrie and Martina. Faith is fourth with 85,802 year-to-date plays. The spins decline from there, with LeAnn at No. 10 registering a total of 47,043 spins. Finally, just for grins, I wondered how much airplay various groups of artists contributed to the overall sound of Country radio. Running the Mediabase 24/7 Top 500 Country airplay acts of the year (with No. 500 having 96 all-in plays thus far) here’s how it breaks out: The top 10 artists get 34% of all airplay. The top 20 artists get 53% of all airplay. The top 30 artists get 65% of all airplay. The top 40 artists get 73% of all airplay. The top 50 artists get 80% of all airplay. - Lon Helton, lon@countryaircheck.com Chuck Aly, chuck@countryaircheck.com Stephanie Keshe, stephanie@countryaircheck.com (615) 320-1450 © 2007 Co u nt r y Airch ec k™ — All r i g hts re s e r ve d.
