Grand Opening of the Meyer Finlay Pet Adoption
1275 Bower Parkway Columbia, SC 29212 Belle (803)465-9150 | pawmettolifeline.org Homeless for 6 months the SCOOP 2012 Annual Newsletter Grand Opening of the Meyer Finlay Pet Adoption Center of Lexington and Richland Counties This year, Pawmetto Lifeline proudly celebrated the grand opening of our Adoption, Medical and Education Center on Bower Parkway. The Center, named the Meyer Finlay Pet Adoption Center of Lexington and Richland Counties, was open to the public for the first time on March 7, 2012. More than 500 supporters and community leaders participated in our grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony. After the ceremony, attendees were invited to tour our new state-of-the-art facility. Volunteers and staff were stationed throughout the building to answer questions and informational displays helped to explain more about our programs and services including: the spay/ neuter clinic, mobile vaccine clinic, adoptions, educational programs and volunteer opportunities. “A new day has dawned for homeless pets in the Midlands” Pawmetto Lifeline President, Deloris Mungo, announced the naming of the Mungo Wilkinson Education and Training Center to CEO, Denise Wilkinson during the ribbon cutting. said CEO, Denise Wilkinson. Each year, over 20,000 dogs and cats enter municipal shelters in the Midlands and over 17,000 of those same pets are euthanized. The Pawmetto Lifeline leaders have developed a strategic plan to solve pet overpopulation in the Midlands. The Center offers comprehensive adoption, medical, education and training programs with the goal of breaking the cycle that has, in the past, led to hopelessness for so many helpless pets. Wilkinson continued, “As a community, we should be proud of the county-owned facility that has taken years of determination and hard work. Together, we are working to solve the overpopulation issue of homeless dogs and cats in our community.” 12 foot statue of the Fur Ball pets, Brinkley & Madison, outside of the new Meyer Finlay Pet Adoption Center. The photo above is of a 15-year-old Yorkie who was surrendered to one of the local municipal shelters. She had a bad wound to her head and was underweight. She required a great deal of TLC and needed the wound on her head cleaned several times a day. She was able to stand and was interested in eating when she arrived at our center, which told me she had a desire to live. There was a brief question about humane euthanasia, but her eyes were still gazing at us with hope. This is my question: Why would anyone take a beloved pet to a municipal shelter in this condition? Especially an elderly pet they have had for so long. We all know the municipal shelters are overwhelmed with too many pets and can only provide limited care to the animals that are surrendered. It was obvious she was a purebred Yorkshire Terrier with a beautiful coat that someone had paid a great deal of money for when she was a puppy. So, if you can afford to pay $400-$2,500 for a purebred, can’t you ensure that your beloved pet lies in the arms of the person that loved her/him for 15 years as she/he crosses the rainbow bridge? I hear the excuse of money all the time when it comes to the care for a pet. Many times I find that statement to be an acceptable excuse in our society and an easy way out for the owner to abandon the pet. Even in this tough economy, I still see most everyone walking around with the latest, greatest technology or the top name brand apparel. It isn’t easy watching our pets or our parents or grandparents grow old and helpless, but I would hope if you truly love the elderly that you will make their dying process as loving and compassionate as possible. Thank goodness there are good people in this state that are willing to support Pawmetto Lifeline’s mission of extending love and compassion to those that have no voice. Thank you for your gifts of time, money and love. They allow us to give so many homeless pets a second chance and the special care they deserve. Pet Soup Food Pantry Helps Low Income Families MARS Columbia donated six pallets of food for our October distribution. Pawmetto Lifeline’s Pet Soup Food Pantry Program provides a basic resource so pet owners can afford to keep their dog or cat and not surrender him/her to a local municipal shelter. Pet food is distributed monthly to 100 clients with each client receiving approximately 40lbs of food. Clients must provide proof of government assistance, disability or unemployment and their pet must be spayed or neutered. Pet Soup is completely volunteer and donation driven. If you would like to donate or volunteer towards Pet Soup, visit pawmettolifeline.org or call (803)465-9176. A Special Home for a Special Life By: The Creech Family We, as a society, are taught to look past a disability and into the heart of a person, but that’s not often applied to our thinking when it comes to pets. People are often more worried about the burden of taking on a special needs pet than the rewards they offer. I am grateful for places like Pawmetto Lifeline that provide for these animals and keep them from being euthanized. Too often you hear the bad stories of what happens to these animals or what certain breeds have done and not enough of the good. Nine years ago my husband, Jon, and I were offered a free dog. The catch; he was deaf and the runt of the litter. The owners couldn’t sell him or give him away. No one wanted him, and my heart broke for the constant rejection this dog had experienced in such a short time. He was a beautiful terrier mixed breed with a calm demeanor and loving personality. We didn’t hesitate to welcome him into our home. Bailey became our companion and best friend. A year ago we lost him to cancer. Bailey was who Jon and I came home to after we were married, he was there to welcome our two children home from the hospital, and he was there to give us kisses anytime any of us were feeling down. It was devastating to lose him, but once we were ready to move on, we were once again faced with a similar situation. My husband and son were looking for things to do over the summer and decided to visit Pawmetto Lifeline. I received a call at work from my husband. He told me there was a dog that looked very similar to Bailey and was deaf. Chaplin had been at the shelter for almost two years as people continuously looked past his good heart and only saw his disability. He had become very nervous and had some unusual mannerisms, but I instantly knew in my heart this was the dog for our family. We were given another chance to give a good dog a good home. For the next month, we made numerous visits to bond with Chaplin before bringing him home. Since then, he has been a great example to our children. He chases them around the backyard and is my son’s ball boy during his backyard baseball games. They love him and don’t realize that he’s different. People were scared of Chaplin because of his disability and his breed, but we knew how great this combination could be and are grateful Pawmetto Lifeline kept him for so long. Just like the saying “never judge a book by its cover,” you can never judge a dog by his either. Chaplin is loving and gentle and has been wonderful to have. We are excited to have Chaplin as a part of our family and look forward to making great memories with him. The Pawmetto Picks Tai is a native of California and moved here in 2002 to begin her family with Lee MacIlwinen. She immediately got involved with Pawmetto Lifeline. She took a leadership role with our adoption program, organizing the events at PetSmart every weekend. She has served on the Executive Committee of the Board for more than 8 years and now serves as the Secretary of the Board. Her passion runs deep as she supports every fundraising effort the organization implements. She has personally rescued many animals, three of which are now part of her family, Charlie, Milo and Megi. Tai was instrumental in the start up of HEART—Help Every Animal Reach Tomorrow. This is a program that focuses on the animals in our local shelters that have a limited amount of time before euthanasia. Tai helped secure the funding to start this collaborative effort and now more than 120 rescue organizations have signed up to partner with this life-saving program. Since its inception in August of 2011, over 2,500 lives have been saved in great part because of Tai’s commitment and love for our homeless pets in the Midlands. In Tai’s spare time, she and Lee have brought two adorable little boys into the world, Jack and Patrick MacIlwinen—both animal lovers and future leaders who we hope will one day follow in their mom’s footsteps. Mike joined the Pawmetto Lifeline team in November 2011 when he moved across the country from Seattle, WA to lead our Animal Care team through our expansion and move to the Meyer Finlay Pet Adoption Center. He always maintains a positive attitude and the utmost compassion for our animals. Whether it’s rescuing a cat from a tree or finding a lost dog, Mike shows his determination and care every day for our mission. On a daily basis, Mike manages a team of eleven staff and as many as 216 animals! Stop by Pawmetto Lifeline and witness Mike hard at work…at any hour! Welcome to South Carolina Mike! We’re glad you are on our team! Homeless for 10 months Legislative Update 2012 Legislative Agenda Pawmetto Lifeline serves on the SC Animal Legislative Coalition. The Committee’s purpose is to enact legislation to effectively prevent animal cruelty in the state of SC. This year our priorities are: • Banning the use of CarbonMonoxide Gas as an approved means of euthanasia • Increased penalties for animal cruelty • Cost of Care We may be calling on each of you this year to use your influence to help us get these bills passed. Our low cost mobile vaccine clinic serves more than 15,000 pets statewide and our spay/neuter clinic has the potential to perform up to 9,000 surgeries during its first year of operation. Our Pet Soup Food Pantry program donates more than 4,000 pounds of dog and cat food every month to low income pet owners. All of our programs work toward one goal: solving pet overpopulation. CARE-A-VAN HEART, Help Every Animal Reach Tomorrow, is a collaborative effort between Pawmetto Lifeline, 501c3 rescues and Midlands municipal shelters. We market all pets at the local shelters to a network of rescue partners across the country. Our partners pull these adoptable pets from the shelter, coordinate medical care needed, and then secure transport to the appropriate rescue. Sponsors and fosters are always needed to help save more lives! To learn more email info@heartofthemidlands.org. The Pawmetto Lifeline Education Program focuses on compassion and character education for school children. Research has proven that there is a direct correlation between animal abuse and human abuse. It is our goal to educate youth about responsible pet ownership and compassionate behavior towards all living creatures to help end this cycle of violence. To schedule a field trip or to learn more, call (803)465-9173. We welcome groups of all ages! ADOPTIONS Our Spay/Neuter Clinic is the only NSNRT (National Spay/Neuter Response Team) certified clinic in the Midlands. Monthly gifts allow Pawmetto Lifeline to rescue & provide medical care to the thousands of homeless pets that need us in the Midlands every day. There are over 20,000 homeless pets in the Midlands and over 17,000 of those same pets are euthanized every year. We believe this is morally and ethically wrong and there is a better way to solve pet overpopulation. Through our initiatives of adoptions, medical and spay/ neuter programs, rescue collaboration, and education, we have a proven solution to transform the Midlands into a no-kill community, meaning no healthy, adoptable pet is euthanized simply because he or she is homeless. The iPetCompanion system consists of a webcam and three robotic toys that are controlled through an online platform on Pawmetto Lifeline’s website. When users log into the system, they will have two minutes to maneuver the toys and play with cats in one of the Pawmetto Lifeline cat rooms. “Our visitors love seeing the toys move and so do the cats! When you’re playing with our cats it’s in real time. When you see the toy moving on your screen it’s actually moving in the cat room, too. It’s really a fascinating system. This advanced technology literally lets you be in the room with our cats wherever you might be,” said Pawmetto Lifeline director of marketing, Natasha Drozdak. Only twelve shelters across the country have this unique system. Pawmetto Lifeline is one of the first shelters in the Southeast to become a part of the iPetCompanion community. Drozdak continued, “It’s a win-win for 1275 Bower Parkway Columbia, SC 29212 pawmettolifeline.org 10 Pawmetto Lifeline. Our cats receive extra stimulation and exposure while animal lovers enjoy interacting with them 24/7. For current iPetCompanion shelters, this system has led to an increase of adoptions and awareness. We are excited for the world to see the wonderful cats we have available for adoption.” Anyone with internet connection could potentially interact with the felines at Pawmetto Lifeline. iPetCompanion shelters have been featured on major media outlets including the Los Angeles Times in August 2012 and on CNN in September 2012. Within our first week, we had over 6,800 visitors to the site from more than 34 countries. Our news segment was shown all over the state of South Carolina and even aired in New York, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. To play with the cats in the Lake Purray cat room at Pawmetto Lifeline, visit www.pawmettolifeline.org. Can’t get enough of cats? Volunteer in one of our cat rooms!
