Volunteers needed
for new food bank
In the UK there are an increasing number of people
going hungry everyday for
reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an
unexpected bill, or simply
by being on a low income.
Along with rising costs of
food and fuel, combined
with
static
income,
high
unemployment
and changes to benefits,
people are finding themselves in crisis.
Due to demand, more
and more food banks are
being set up across the
country.
Chilton Town Council have
been approached to help
set up a food bank in
Chilton, subject to volunteers.
For further information,
or to express an interest
as a volunteer, call into
Chilton Town Council or
telephone 01388 721788.

Nearly 100 drivers caught
speeding
A week-long crackdown
on
speeding
drivers
saw almost 100 per day
caught going too fast
across Cleveland, County
Durham and Darlington.
The Cleveland and Durham
joint specialist operations
unit (CDSOU) launched
the operation on Monday,
14th April in support of
a Europe-wide campaign
aimed at reducing speeds
and improving safety for
all road-users.
In just seven days a total
of 667 drivers were found
to be breaking the speed

limits across the two force
areas.
The total consisted of 120
recorded by officers out
on patrol and 547 caught
on equipment used by the
unit’s safety camera vans.
Depending on how far
they were exceeding the
limit, the offenders will
either have been invited
to go on a speed awareness course, issued with a
fixed penalty fine or in the
most serious cases, face
prosecution.
Chief Insp Ed Turner,
head of CDSOU said; “The
number of drivers caught
speeding
demonstrates
that enforcement action
remains absolutely essential. Too many motorists
are continuing to drive in
an unacceptable, unsafe
manner and putting lives
at risk.
“Excess speed is one of
the biggest single causes
of all road collisions not
only in our area, but nationally. People in Cleveland and Durham can
therefore expect to see
more operations like this
over the coming months.”

Carl Alexander Tweedy
was accompanied by his
father when he appeared
before the District Judge
at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court recently.
The 21 year-old, of Newton
Street, Ferryhill, pleaded
guilty to a charge of affray,
arising out of incidents in
Ferryhill on 22nd April.
The court heard that on
that day, Tweedy had
made a 999 call to the
emergency
services,
stating that he was sick of
his life and of being taken
advantage of by his friends
and that he intended to
hang himself.
Officers attended and
found Tweedy, who was
drunk, in local allotments.
Police returned him home
to his father but the young
man then became very
agitated and grabbed a
six inch kitchen knife and
began waving it about.
An officer used an incapacitating
spray
on
Tweedy, who then tried
to barricade himself inside
the toilets before being
handcuffed and arrested.
Matters were adjourned
until 4th June, in order
for appropriate reports to
be produced and Judge
Walker advised that the
defendant should be accompanied by his father or
an appropriate adult at any
future court appearance.
Pupil raises funds
for Borneo project
Ferryhill Station Workingmen’s Club held a fantastic
fundraising night for local
girl Lorna Bennett, a pupil
at Whitworth Park School
and 6th Form College.
She has already raised
£1,018 and overall needs
£3,960.
The night saw two local
bands rock the night,
‘Dirty love’, led by local
lad Martin Smith, and
Sedgefield’s ‘Ghost Pilots’.
Lorna is off to Borneo for
a month in 2015 and whilst
there will be taking part
in sustainable projects
such as beach cleaning and
building.
As a family they would
like to thank Martin for
organising the bands, Paul
Batey for a being a brilliant compere, the bar
staff, who never stopped,
Stephen for the never
ending advertising, Anne
Marie for selling the
tickets, family and friends
for buying tickets and
giving support, the club
for allowing them to host
the event and last of all
Evelyn (gran) for her never

Don’t fall victim to costly
scams
People in Ferryhill and
Chilton are being urged
to not fall for scams
and rip-offs which could
leave them heavily out of
pocket.
Durham County Council is
marking ‘Scams Awareness
Month’ – which takes place
throughout May – by highlighting some of the most
common con tricks people
should watch out for.
They include dodgy internet-based offers, mailshot
scams, bogus telesales
calls and rogue traders who
call at people’s homes.
Joanne Waller, head of
environment, health and
consumer protection at
Durham County Council,
said: “Scams often target
the most vulnerable people
and come in a variety of
ways – including through
the post, over the phone,
on the doorstep and via
the internet.
“They are all aimed at
persuading
people
to
hand over money or their
personal details, which can
then be used to commit
fraud.
“These scams can bring
heartbreaking consequences, particularly for elderly
and vulnerable victims, so
we want to ensure people
are aware of them and can
spot the warning signs.”
Scams Awareness Month
aims to raise awareness
about four main types of
scam:
• Online scams, such as
websites offering ‘check
and send’ services for
things such as passport,
driving
licence
and
European Health Insurance Cards applications
as well as help with tax
returns. These copycat
websites can appear
genuine and give the
appearance that they
are official or authorised
Government
websites
when this is not the
case. The fees charged
by these sites are often
substantial.
• Mailshot scams. These
are often designed to
get people to part with
money or bank details by
promising huge rewards.
The most common types
of mailshot scam are
fake lotteries, prize
draws and sweepstakes,
requests for advance
fees or money transfers, promises of home
working
and
career
opportunities,
offers
of health and slimming
‘miracle’ products and
investment opportunities.
• Telephone scams – in
particular one where the
caller claims to be from
the Microsoft or Apple
technical support team.
People receiving these
calls
have
reported
that they have been
asked to give personal
details or pay for an
unnecessary service or
bogus software which
can enable fraudsters
to access all data on
their computer or leave
the computer affected
by harmful viruses or
spyware. The caller
often claims there is
a problem with the
computer but cases that
have come to light show
that this is not true.
• Doorstep scams where
tradesmen
offer
products or services
at often extortionate
prices. They often leave
behind
sub-standard
work which the homeowner then has to
spend more money on
to get put right. These
tradesmen can be difficult to trace as they
rarely leave paperwork
or receipts and the consumers often have no
contact details.
People are being urged
to look out for potential
scams and be aware of
some of the tell-tale signs,
including: promises of
prize money in a competition you haven’t entered,
requests for payment to
claim a prize, offers that
are too good to be true,
persistent sales pitches
and requests for bank
details or money up front.
If anyone suspects they
have been targeted by a
scam they are advised to
report it to Action Fraud
on 0300 123 2040. Action
Fraud is the UK’s national
reporting centre for fraud
and internet crime and
details of some of the
current scams targeting
people are detailed on
their website at www.actionfraud.police.uk.

A proud family has led the
way for a Chilton volunteer
to receive County Durham’s
top award at a ceremony at
Durham County Hall.
Susan
Smith’s
proud
daughter, Laura, nominated her mother to the
Four Together Area Action
Partnership, for her work
with those suffering from
Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
These life-changing experiences were witnessed
first-hand by Susan, whose
mother developed Alzheimer’s when she was just 50
years of age.
Everyone touched by these
conditions has their own
approach to caring for their
loved ones - some choose
to volunteer, to support
local groups or to help sufferers and their families.
Susan, supported by her
husband, found a carehome supplying the care
her mother required.
It was the experiences in
finding the right care home
that led Susan to become
part of the group ‘Brighter
Skies’.
Now a stalwart of the organisation, Susan raises
money for Alzheimer’s
charities by organising
regular bingo nights, fairs,
raffles, pantomimes and

What Makes A Poem
What makes a poem
Sometimes you need a subject
Often of past memories you collect.
Like Winter time, when you had snow
and ice
For older folk not very nice.
But bairns liked ice and snow
To see how fast on their sledge they
could go.
Memories of school, chalk and slate
After entering through iron gate.
In evenings going to flicks
Enjoying a cowboy film starring Roy
Rogers or Tom Mix.
A walk in the country in fine weather
Seeing various birds in coloured feather
Remembering, at big school sports days
If you had and allotment maybe feeding
hens maize
So you see, what makes a poem
A subject, with lines of rhymes of childhood and happy times.

1st XI overcome bad weather
to beat Hylton
Following two days of
heavy
showers,
the
ground staff at Mainsforth
Cricket Club had to work
very hard for the club to
be able to stage one of
the few games that were
played last Saturday.
However, the effort was
worthwhile as the club
1st XI beat Hylton from
Sunderland by 28 runs.
Due to a mid-afternoon
downpour,
Mainsforth,
who had been put in to
bat after losing the toss
,reached 126 for the loss
of nine wickets in their
reduced 37 overs.
Nawaz top scored with 55
before being bowled, and
he was well supported by
Gary Cummings, who contributed 36 runs to the
Mainsforth total.
The Hylton reply started
briskly, but after initially being well ahead
of the required run rate,
wickets started to fall.
When it became apparent
that Hylton would not
reach
the
Mainsforth
total, it was questionable
whether the Mainsforth
attack could take the
remaining wickets in the
time left and secure a
victory.
The last over to be
bowled was started just
before half past seven
with one more wicket
needed to win the game.
Gary Cummings, bowling
the last over, used all his
experience to inflict the
damage when the Hylton
batsman gave an easy
catch to Nawaz, with 3
balls remaining.
The 21 points gained from
this match moved the
club up to 5th position
in the Durham Cricket
League.
On Thursday 15th May at
6.00pm, the first XI have
a 20/20 home cup tie
against Silksworth, and
the following day, Friday
16th May, sees the club
2nd XI take on Hunwick in
a rearranged cup tie.
The
Saturday
league
game,
1.30pm
start,
sees the first XI at home
to Philadelphia in what
should be an exciting
match.
On Sunday 19th the
under 11’s are at home
to Willington starting at
9.30am, and on Monday
evening the under 15’s
play Tudhoe at Mainsforth
in a league cup tie.
A busy period of 6 home
games in 7 days concludes
on Wednesday 21st when
the under 13’s are at
home to Bishop Auckland.
“With plenty of games
to choose from, if you
haven’t visited the Mainsforth ground for a while,
why not come along,
enjoy a drink and watch
some cricket?” asked a
spokesperson.

the magical Jay White

through and he finished
by slotting the ball into
the bottom corner of the
net, pleasing the sizeable
Ferryhill support before
half time.
After the break the Celtic
continued to dominate,
Kurt Seymour going close

Liam Taylor. Waldridge
then had a 10 minute

the back three of Dan

Ferryhill Celtic - The
unbeatables
Ferryhill Celtic played in
the Alan Smith League
Cup on Friday 2nd May
at Durham City’s ground
against
a
Waldridge
side that had already
won their league, and
boasted a massive 148
goals between them this
season.
In what proved to be a
fantastic game, the Celtic
started on the front foot
and were straight into
their slick passing style,
knocking the ball about
with confidence.
After just 20 minutes
they
were
rewarded
when a Liam Pearson
shot was parried and the
outstanding Ben Clary
finished from close range
to put the Celtic 1 up.
A couple of minutes
later, Andrew Agar was
put through but only a
last ditch tackle stopped
the boys for their effort
in the league this season,
although they weren't
playing for points they
did a very good job and
I am proud of every one
of them.”
and with only 2 minutes
left on the clock.
The Celtic then rounded
off a wonderful performance when the relentless Shane Todd ran the
length of the pitch to fire
a thunderbolt of a shot
past the keeper to win
the cup.
Man of the match went to
Ben Clary.
On Sunday 4th May,
the
Celtic
achieved
something special and
rounded off a truly wonderful season by going
through the whole league
unbeaten.
They beat second team
Pelton 8-3, with goals
from Jonny Agar, Jason
Hartnel, Dan Mitton Jay
White.
Manager Lee Jewett said
it had been a memorable
season for everyone connected with club.
