Do you ever wonder how some of the wonderful services that you experience every day came to be? In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Older Americans Act (OAA) into law. The OAA funds critical services that keep older adults healthy and independent—services like meals, job training, senior centers, caregiver support, transportation, health promotion, benefits enrollment, and so much more. July 15th marks this historic anniversary and all month people across the nation will be celebrating the ways the OAA has impacted the lives of older adults and their families. So in conjunction with the theme, “get into the act,” and join us as we also mark this important anniversary throughout our centers. Contact your senior center for details on your local celebration! March for Meals and Family Fun Day Wrap-up! We had a fantastic March for Meals and Family Fun Day this year! Walkers (and many others) jump started their day with a delicious pancake breakfast prepared by the Franklin Area Lions’ Club. Then it was off to the beautiful Winnipesaukee River trail for a 3 mile round-trip trek, and back for hot dogs and a little down time, before heading into Family Fun Day where guests were treated to a variety of games and crafts. Thanks to all the hard work by our Senior Centers, community partners, seniors, and staff. Together we raised over $17,000! A record for this event! Whether you walked, volunteered, ate pancakes, made fairy garlands or played squirt shoot, we are grateful for you participation and for your contributions! People who are self-managing chronic illnesses and taking medications can be susceptible to dehydration. Fluid balance is also affected by emotional stress, exercise, general health, and the weather. Be proactive and drink fluids throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Wear light colored clothing and stay indoors during mid-day hours. Be mindful of extreme weather conditions that can pose a health and safety threat, and if needed, watch for cooling centers in your community.
