Student life at Princeton University History Princeton University was founded at Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1746 as the College of New Jersey. As part of the local celebrations in 1896, the College of New Jersey changed its name to Princeton University, the present name of the university Princeton students and faculty staffs shares the tradition of educational excellence begun more than 250 years ago. The Princeton Footnotes is a traditional all-male a cappella group from Princeton University in Princeton. The Footnotes is a student-run, semi-professional performing group. They are a part of Princeton University's "archrotation" a cappella organization, which includes the Nassoons, Tigertones, Katzenjammers, Roaring Twenty , Tigerlillies, Wildcats, and Tigressions.
