If I start on the reasons why South Africa is in the midst of an energy crisis,
I’ll just end up ranting! So rather than subject you to a rant, I’m going to
accept what I can’t change and look at the things we can do. Energy and how to use less
of it, is after all, a global concern.
Some tips for cutting your electricity bill:
•
Defrost food by taking it out a few hours earlier rather than use a microwave.
•
Unplug appliances including cellphone chargers and your computer.
•
Hang laundry outside instead of using a tumble dryer.
•
Run the dishwasher and washing machine only on full loads.
•
Don’t overfill the kettle. Just boil the amount of water you need.
•
Turn off lights in rooms you are not using.
•
Use energy-efficient lightbulbs.
DID YOU KNOW: If you run your pool pump for 6 hours daily, instead of
10, you can save 40% on your monthly electricity bill!

Health and Wellness
Winter Fitness Tips:
Keep yourself accountable by training with
a partner. Set yourself a short term goal
like starting with 10 minutes a day of either
jogging on the spot, skipping or jumping jacks.
Create a challenge with a friend to see who
exercises the most days per week and let there
be a reward for a start. A reward would be R10
per day as a fine if the other doesn't exercise. It's
getting started and pushing through and enjoy
while you at it!

Recipe, Food, Catering
Smooth vegetable soup with bacon and feta cheese
Preparation time: 20 mins
Cooking time: 45 mins
Ingredients
• 1 onion, roughly chopped
• 2 leeks, roughly chopped
• 2 celery spears, roughly chopped
• 2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
• 5 large carrots, peeled and chopped
• 3 potatoes, peeled and chopped
• 1 butternut, peeled, seeds removed and chopped
• 1 bay leaf
• ½ tsp nutmeg
• ½ tsp cloves
• 1 tsp paprika
• 1.5 l vegetable stock
• salt & pepper to taste
• bacon, fried till crispy, to serve
• crumbled feta, to serve
Method
In a large pot, heat some olive oil and fry the onions, leeks and celery
until soft and transparent. Add the garlic and fry for another minute.
Add all the vegetables and flavourings and allow to sauté for 5-10
minutes. Add the stock and reduce the heat.
Cover the pot and allow to simmer gently for 30-45 minutes.
When the vegetables are thoroughly cooked, remove the pot from
the heat and blend the soup. I use my handheld blender for this but
you can also use a blender or food processor. Season the soup to
taste and serve with the bacon and feta sprinkled over.
Winter Health Boosters: Coffee and Hot Chocolate
by Deevra Norling
Crazy about Coffee!
Coffee often gets a bad rep, but is actually loaded with antioxidants and has numerous health benefits:
1) It helps burn fat – thereby helping to keep off those unwanted kilos known to pile on during winter!
2) It lowers your risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
3) It lowers your risk of Type 2 Diabetes.
4) It makes you happier and less likely to suffer from depression.
Warm up with Hot Chocolate
Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, contains antioxidants. Cocoa is rich in flavonoids
which help reduce cardiovascular disease. Other benefits include:
1) Hot cocoa helps you relax, especially if you make it with milk.
2) It lowers blood pressure.
3) It keeps you looking younger, thanks to those antioxidants!
4) Flavonoids prevent blood clots.
DID YOU KNOW: A mug of hot cocoa has nearly twice the amount of antioxidants as a
glass of red wine

HILLSONG AFRICA FOUNDATION: WE CANNOT DO EVERYTHING, BUT WE MUST DO
SOMETHING.
The Hillsong Africa Foundation acts as a catalyst of hope in the Western Cape, igniting a social
movement to ‘be the change that you want to see’.
Over the years, our team has joined hands with communities to inspire, incubate and grow
positive change. Each initiative works to address the root of the need, breaking the cycles of
poverty from the inside out.
Nearly 25% of South African’s are unemployed – a statistic that both Hillsong Africa Foundation
and our communities are passionate about changing.
In response, the Brick Making Project enables local entrepreneurs to start their own businesses
that increase local skills development and employment access. Hillsong Africa Foundation
provides seed capital and pairs each entrepreneur with a business development coach to achieve
sustainability within 1 year of the start-up. Get involved today by becoming a business coach or
by donating seed capital.
In digging deeper, we found that unemployment rates are linked to low literacy rates in South
Africa.
And so, Hillsong Africa Foundation took the initiative to partner with primary schools and their
surrounding communities to increase the quality of education – a project called READBABYREAD.
This project boosts literacy rates by first equipping classrooms with essential resources, then
strengthening teachers through professional development and finally by encouraging social
cohesion of communities to love, enjoy and participate in reading together.
Help READBABYREAD by joining our school volunteer team
or throwing a fundraising / advocacy party in your local book
club or exercise group.
Get involved and be the change you want to see in the
community.

LEADING YOUR BUSINESS BY MAKING GOOD CHOICES
The average business person is often called upon to make choices "on the spot" or have to think "on their
feet". How often after we made a decision "on the spot", we regret having made it? Even though at the time,
we thought that it was made in the best interest of the business. The secret to preventing such situations
lies in the art of "making your decisions" before you have to make them. This prevents one from making
convenient, emotional or popular choices, when challenged. Most people only resort to decision making
during a crisis. The best time to prepare for good decision making is: Before the crises. This is the time when
we are driven to make decisions based on our emotions or circumstances. These are the moments we need
to ensure that we have strong values in place. Values upon which all our future decisions are based. It is
said that as "Vision" is the head of ones dreams, VALUES are the Heart. It speaks to who you are. Before the
crisis (the good times), is also the best time to think about bad times before they arrive. This is also the time to see potential
problems.....Remember that "what got you there, won't keep you there" and that things will go wrong! It is therefore wise to
have the plan before the disaster strikes! "THINK OF EVERY POSSIBLE WAY YOUR PLANE MIGHT CRASH".
Spend time preparing for potential problems and have a contingency plan in place. As preparation is an integral part of all
successes, you will find that preparing to make good decisions will help DURING THE CRISES to: Make courageous, value-based
decisions not comfortable ones. You will also be able to make priority decisions, deciding on the first (main) things first. Having
made your decisions before you had to make them, will enable you to take initiatives during a crisis. Whilst everyone will be
sitting around thinking, you will be busy Leading your business through a crisis due to good decision making!
"THERE IS A CHOICE YOU HAVE TO MAKE IN EVERYTHING YOU DO, SO KEEP IN MIND THAT IN THE END, THE CHOICE YOU
MAKE MAKES YOU!"
