I am Woman, Hear Me Roar!
The Rise of Women Entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurship is growing rapidly worldwide as
many discover that the concept of a ‘permanent’ job
is nothing but an illusion. Recessions, downsizing
and retrenchment have seen many companies
cut staff leaving shell-shocked employees jobless
almost overnight.
Entrepreneurship to date has been a largely maledominated arena, but women entrepreneurs are
slowly starting to take up a bigger slice of the
entrepreneurial pie!
The contribution of women in the small and
medium enterprise (SME) sector influences the
economy and overall wellbeing of the country in
a more far-reaching way. Why? Because women
tend to reinvest their profits in their families and in
educating their children and thereby reducing the
cycle of generational poverty.
Starting a small business doesn’t necessarily have
to involve premises, capital and staff. Entrepreneurs
come in different forms. Below are some alternatives
if you are thinking of giving your job the boot and
going it on your own.
1. Do something you love.
Take your passion or hobby and turn it into a
small business. This could be anything from
sewing, cooking, dancing, art or teaching horseriding! The possibilities are endless.
2. Freelance
Many writers, graphic designers and web
designers are going it on their own. In tough
economic times, companies that need to cut staff
end up outsourcing to a freelancer when they
need to.
3. Become a consultant or independent contractor
Are you a marketing guru, PR whiz, genius
accountant or have experience in management
consulting? Why work for someone else? Put your
skills to use as a consultant.
Being a solopreneur is often the easiest way to start.
But many who have started as a one-man (pardon,
one-woman) show have grown their businesses into
something bigger.
Remember, small businesses provide jobs to many
people and play a vital role in creating a buoyant
economy.

Health Wellness & Beauty
Regular exercise through walking, running, cycling at least
20-30 minutes three to five times a week aids in over all
health and especially heart health.
Let's push ourselves physically to run the extra kilometer, to
do an extra class at gym, to choose the stairs instead of the
lift, to park further from entrances so that we can fit in an
extra walk, to discipline ourselves with what we choose to
eat and drink.
Do what you can when you can, even a few minutes a day,
regularly and notice amazing results to your overall health
and well-being.
As colds and flu do the rounds in winter it becomes increasingly
important to look after our health by staying warm, eating plenty
of fresh produce, and making sure we’re getting all the nutrients
we need. See our interesting articles and suppliers. Stock up on
your vitamins and supplements at Nu Pharmacy – check out all
their great health savings!
With all the focus on health, wellness, and sleeping in as late as
possible in the mornings, beauty tends to take a back seat at this
time of the year – but this does nothing for our mood. The old
adage, “when you look good, you feel good” holds true, so give
beauty a chance this winter and check out the great savings on
your favourite cosmetics in store.
If you’re wondering how to achieve some of your favourite
beauty looks, we’ve got that covered with our experts ...
We’ve got everything you need to be healthy and beautiful this
winter, so get your copy of reCONNECT and take advantage of

reCONNECT connecting with business women Lucille Fabe
(Owner of Planet Nails Claremont).
How did it all start for you?
It started 6 years ago .... I just got tired of being in the banking sector
and decided to take on something new and this venture intrigued me
because it focuses on women, beauty and sustainability, a key factor
needed to enhance and promote successful women in business.
Give three words that best describes your business?
Retail, Wholesale , Training
Where do you see yourself and the business in 3-5 years?
Well hopefully we will still be trading from this store, I have just
renewed our lease for 5 years. I want to expand our business to outside
of the Cape metropole area and I am looking at doing more marketing
to clients along the West Coast area especially as well as the Overberg
areas and hopefully I will be able to do more training out there as well.

This month we focus on Women’s Health
as we celebrate the important role women
play in our world!
Most Woman not only have busy homes to
attend to but also busy careers and many
demands. It’s so important to stay healthy
and nourished to be able to meet those
demands. Eating a healthy balanced diet
will ensure that you are able to work hard
and keep illness at bay. Here are some of my
favourite choices to boost your health this
month:
Brown lentils: Making sure you get a good
dose of “slow” carbohydrates in your diet
will make sure you keep your energy levels
flowing throughout the day. Low in calories and high in nutrition, lentils
are also easy to cook and a great way to extend a meal, not forgetting
how reasonably priced they are! They are a great source of folate and
magnesium, which are big contributors to heart health. They make a great
choice for people who are diabetic or insulin resistant as they are very high
in fibre which means carbohydrate digestion will be slow.
08 |reCONNECT Magazine | AUGUST 2014 Using a mixer, cream the butter, sugars and vanilla until
pale and fluffy. Add 1 egg at a time mixing thoroughly
each time. Add flour, bicarbonate and salt and fold in
with a wooden spoon until incorporated. Add milk, banana and gingers and fold in.
Grease and line a loaf tin with greaseproof paper. Pour
the cake batter into the tin and bake for 40-60 minutes
until an inserted skewer comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool for 5 - 10 minutes before removing the cake from the tin and then cool on a cooling
rack.
Serve warm with custard for a winter treat or with
cream of ice-cream for those warmer days!
This cake can also be served as a tea-time treat. Cover
the cake with a dripping icing and top with walnuts or
candies ginger...
Flaxseeds: This incredible SuperSeed contains the highest amounts of
B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese than any other seed and is
rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids which are a key force against inflammation
in our bodies. It is also incredibly high in both soluble and insoluble
fibre which is probably why flax has cholesterol lowering effects. Flax is
also perhaps our best source of lignans, which convert in our intestines
to substances that tend to help balance female hormones. There is
evidence that lignans may promote fertility, reduce peri-menopausal
symptoms, and possibly help p
Dried Blueberries: One of my favourite snacks dried blueberries pack
a serious nutritional punch. They are low in sodium and in calories,
but rich in Vitamin K which helps your blood clot efficiently and also
plays a crucial role in bone health. There is also evidence suggesting
that vitamin K helps cut the risk of bone fractures, especially in
postmenopausal women who are at risk for osteoporosis.

Business Support
Growing your business through nurturing
Considering that we're in the month of August, when our world
stops to celebrate women, I cannot but think of the impact and
influence women have on GROWTH.
Having considered that, I thought about how women raise their
children from babies to adulthood through NURTURING.
As business owners, we often think that we can lead our businesses
to success...alone. We tend to miss or overlook the fact that our
most important asset is indeed our staff. Whether big or small they
do have a tremendous role to play in the successful growth of our
businesses.
So, like mothers, we too need to know that the people in our
businesses need to be fed - with encouragement, recognition,
security and hope. That process is called, nurturing. It is interesting
that a mother does not only nurture and give attention when she
has spare time or when it is convenient, she understands that this
is a daily act, imperative to the growth of the child. Since we often
refer to and treat our businesses as our "babies", why then are we
not nurturing our staff. It is a fact that when our staff know that they
are more than "just a number" and that they do matter and will grow
and deliver in terms of their potential.
People perform on the level that we believe that they can perform
on. People are desperate for encouragement and are influenced
most by those who make them feel the best about themselves.
So let us henceforth show them love, respect, a sense of security,
recognition and encouragement for as they grow, so too will our
businesses grow!
