Director’s Welcome
In the past, people would book their vacations around the SAMA Gala. It
was described as the best party in western Pennsylvania. Others have tried
to copy the Gala’s success, but few have duplicated its creative spirit, artistic
flair, grand presentation and entertainment value. This night belongs to
SAMA! It was, and it remains, the signature fund-raising event for the
Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.
Funds raised from the Gala support the Museum’s extensive exhibition
calendar, innovative education programs, and a variety of cultural events
across SAMA’s four sites – Altoona, Johnstown, Ligonier Valley and Loretto
– today, the longest running satellite museum system in the country. Know
that your support goes to offering access to our museums – free of charge –
to thousands each year. Know that your support allows SAMA to serve our
communities on a rich and significant level. In short, know that we all
benefit from each dollar raised this evening.
After the record-breaking success of last year’s Gala, there was a great deal
of enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding this year’s event. Gala 2013,
Asian Fusion, will go down in the record books as one of SAMA’s most
successful initiatives. Tonight we treat our guests to the North American
premiere of an incredible exhibition of contemporary Chinese folk banners.
The collection was first shown at Beijing’s National Museum of China in
the mid-1990s, but is on view here tonight in the exhibition Stories Joyfully
Embroidered: Shaanxi Folk Textiles from Northern China. My appreciation is
extended to Youjia L. Xin for sharing this collection with the Museum and
our guests.
We are most fortunate to have an active and engaged Gala Committee that
has worked very hard to make tonight’s Gala an electric, elegant and enjoyable evening for everyone in attendance. The dynamic leadership, drive, and
can-do attitude of co-chairs Jim Cayce, Marian Morgan, Nancy Sheetz and
Michael Strueber were instrumental to the Gala’s success. I extend a special
thank you to Michael and Barbara Sincak for their breath-taking decorations. I also appreciate the efforts of the Museum staff in helping to make
the Gala a success. I thank SAMA’s Board of Trustees for supporting the
Gala. The Museum also is indebted to our patrons, table sponsors, donors,
vendors, and everyone else who has donated their talents, time, goods, and
services to make this Gala a success.
Finally, thanks to all of our guests for supporting the Gala and for the many
