With a Need As Great As It’s Ever Been: An Overview of the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA) Presented by Dr. G. Duncan Harris , President National Council on Black American Affairs My NCBAA Journey • Presented at a Northeast Region Conference 2004 • Participated in the 2006 Leadership Development Institute • Joined the Northeast Region Board 2006 • President of the Northeast Region Board 2010 • National Board Vice President of Organizational Vitality 2012 • National President 2014 NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been Historical Overview “When you are right, you cannot be too radical. When you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. • In 1968, an ad hoc Black Caucus was organized during the Annual Convention of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) to address the changing needs in higher education. • In 1972 that caucus became the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA) —the first affiliated council of AACC. • NCBAA serves as a collaborative voice, promoting the academic success of African American students, faculty, staff, and administrators. NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been Mission Statement The National Council on Black American Affairs is committed to: – Improving educational opportunities and professional development for African-American students, faculty, staff, and administration. – Developing collaborative relationships with educational, business, and public service institutions with compatible goals. – Networking to maximize the achievement of career goals for African-American students, faculty, staff, and administration. – Ensuring the articulation of positions on issues affecting African-Americans in the formulation of policy and decision-making. NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been NCBAA Values The National Council on Black American Affairs believes in: • • • • • • • • • Lifelong learning and development for all people. Collegial sharing of information and ideas. Access to higher education for all people; increased access for the underserved. Diversity of people, ideas and learning styles. Teaching excellence and innovation through intellectual, social, cultural, and technological enrichment. Partnerships with federal, state and local entities that share similar missions, goals and objectives. Volunteerism for causes, objectives and purposes supportive of the aims of NCBAA. Recognition of excellence. Mentoring to enhance student achievement, teaching performance as well as staff and administrative effectiveness. NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been 2015-2016 Goals/Planning • Strengthening our regions. • Consider hiring a PT staff person (Executive Director or Assistant to the NCBAA Board). • Create a quarterly (monthly if possible) communication report that shares membership numbers, programs and their impact, and the NCBAA position on any current affairs. • Develop a board member training program for existing and new board. • Continue to streamline operating procedures. • Increase utilization of communication vehicles – Facebook, twitter, webpage, newsletter NCBAA President, Dr. G. Duncan Harris and KJR CEO, Kenya Rutland at NCBAA Summer Board Meeting NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been National Council on Black American Affairs “The premier professional development and networking organization for community college African American faculty, staff, administrators, and students.” NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been Relationship with the American Association of Community Colleges • The NCBAA receives its authorization to conduct activity as an official affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges • The president of the NCBAA has a seat on the AACC Commission on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity and the Council of Affiliated Councils • Based on its affiliate status, the NCBAA has an automatic selected session for the AACC Commission. The 2015 submission was, “Holding Them High: Showcasing Results Based African American Student Success Programs” • The NCBAA conducts a reception annually at the AACC Convention in addition to a fund raising Awards Breakfast. • The NCBAA participates annually as a part of the AACC Convention marketplace, distributing marketing/membership materials and greeting patrons desirous of learning more about the organization AACC Marketing Materials NCBAA AACC Marketplace Booth NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been 2014 Awards Breakfast Ticket Structure: NCBAA National Board & Governance • National Board – – – – – – – – – – President VP of Organizational Vitality Treasurer Secretary VP of Public Relations VP of Programs VP of Membership Parliamentarian Regional Presidents At Large Members • Constitution and By-Laws • The national board meets three times annually – two business meetings (July and January) and the annual meeting (AACC Convention – April) NCBAA Board Members NCBAA: With a Need As Great As It's Ever Been Structure: Regions • The NCBAA is structured into four REGIONAL COUNCILS that serve to support the needs and achievements of local community colleges, universities or other educational institutions throughout the United States and the territories. Founded in 1983, the Presidents’ Round Table is a unique organization of community college chief executive officers. Priorities of the organization include the successful matriculation of African-American students and employment opportunities for African Americans in community colleges across the nation, with special emphasis on grooming future presidents. The Thomas Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership. Many of the graduates of the Lakin Institute have gone on to become college presidents or have advanced to higher level positions in the ranks of community colleges. Website: www.theprt.org. If you reside in that region, we need you to become an NCBAA Champion • Encourage your home institution to become an institutional member. • Connect with your regional president and contribute your professional and administrative strengths to the region.
