SMILE LINES PAGE 2 VOLUME VIII, ISSUE I President Tom Flavin Speaks--Once again magic is in the air. Soon the halls of St. Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education will be transformed into the land of smiles for some 500-600 area children. All will be done with just a wave of the Tooth Fairy’s wand, and a little help from the 300 or so volunteers of GKAS. The great room of the clinic will be covered with colorful posters and balloons of all shapes and sizes. Our goal will be to make this visit to the dentist as comfortable as possible as we teach them that good overall health starts with a healthy smile and happy teeth! For most of the children, this will be an experience to remember. A fun memory of what dentistry can be! There will be a wide variety of children seen at the clinic. Once again we will be serving children from all over the Greater St. Louis area. Many will come from public schools and our community outreach programs, while some will be by appointments made by their caregivers and parents. Some will have special needs, some will not have slept for days due to a toothache. The clinic never ceases to amaze me! To see it in action is to believe in the goodness of people! The great depth of generosity of people who come together twice a year to make something special happen for all these wonderful children is amazing and profound to behold. And believe me, to really appreciate it, you have to see it! You’ll want to be a part of it over and over again! Now that’s magic! Great news for the parents, not so much for the kids. Give Kids a Smile had several successful outreach programs this year. Even though we have had 23 GKAS clinics, the need for dental care to many of the children in the St. Louis area is still overwhelming. Also, dental insurances are changing all the time. Patient loyalty is a thing of the past, except for those who don’t have dental insurance. SMILE LINES PAGE 3 — for the Board of Directors At the screening programs this summer, we saw a lot of kids that needed a significant amount of dental care. For many, GKAS is their only hope and place to get that treatment. That is why GKAS bi-annual clinics are so important. My mission opportunities range from Kosovo to GKAS to Service International helping in the inner city. We have opportunities in many areas to help underprivileged kids. GKAS is a great place to give back and be a part of great program. These kids grab your heart. We DO have an obligation to serve them. Remember, Christ’s heart was with the children. Let yours be too. Mark M. Kindness from strangers is almost unheard of. Through the kindness and generosity of McCarthy Building Companies, GKAS was able to cover the cost of the general anesthesia needed to address the dental needs of my little friend Ian Cody. I met Ian and his mother at Pediatric Dentistry of Sunset Hills on February 5, 2013. Dr. Hollander was the attending dentist this particular day. From the moment you arrive, Dr. Hollander and his entire office work in concert to make each child’s visit a pleasant and positive one. This was Ian’s first visit to a private dental office. He had only been seen by “Big Smiles” dental program that goes to his school. Unfortunately Big Smiles wasn’t equipped to offer Ian the treatment he required. Minor dental treatment is provided in the school setting, but extensive dental needs can’t be met with Big Smiles. Ian’s mother received a letter telling her that Ian needed lots of restorative under general anesthesia. Ian’s parents work hard to support their family. Ian’s mother began to research all options available. Nothing reachable was available until she found Give Kids A Smile. Mrs. Cody brought Ian and his little sister to our October clinic at SLU. Ian was seen and placed in our Smile Factory program. Nitrous oxide wasn’t enough to contain Ian for treatment. Ian is perpetual motion and I mean that in kindest way. He is a normal little boy always moving and chattering. Through the generosity of McCarthy Building Companies, Dr. Hollander with the assistance of Premier Dental Anesthesia and the staff at Pediatric Dentistry gave Ian a healthy mouth pain free. Give Kids A Smile and all of our dental professionals believe that childhood experiences shape a person’s perception throughout his or her life. We are dedicated to providing quality dental care in a nurturing environment. Our goal is to help develop healthy happy adults who are fearless and visit the dentist regularly. Patti Durbin GKAS Admin. Assistant Ian and his mom meet Dr. Hollander for the first time! WELCOME BACK This October marks the 3rd anniversary of the GKAS Community Leadership Development Institute. The staff and volunteers at GKAS clinics in St. Louis have helped train leaders from across the country. Again, 10 community leaders will be arriving in St. Louis on Wednesday, October 23 to meet the directors and staff of Give Kids A Smile—St. Louis. Their goal is to learn how the St. Louis GKAS clinics work and to apply some of those practices in their own community GKAS outreach programs. In addition, two previous graduates from the 2012 Institute, Ms. Julie Vaughn and Ms. Shawna Rohner will return to share their stories of how the training has impacted their own Give Kids A Smile events. Our volunteers become the expert teachers for the Institute scholars. The scholars will work along side volunteers at the October clinic to see how we create a fun, festive atmosphere and still provide comprehensive dentistry for these underserved children. It is pretty amazing how well our clinic runs. In a day and a half, we are able to treat approximately 600 kids with over $400,000 in dental care and related services. That is a model program that many across the country would like to emulate. The carnival –like atmosphere is a key component of making the “trip to the dentist” a fun and exciting event in a child’s life. The smiles are worthy of the efforts of the volunteers, trainers and scholars of this Institute. Welcome !!
