Family Portrait Tips - Capture Photography
Tips for a successful family portrait session
What to wear:
-Think about coordinating colors rather than wearing the same color. Colors
that compliment each other are a more progressive look rather than everyone
simply wearing the same color. Plus it gives a chance for each family member
to show a little bit more of their personality.
-Remember accessories are colors too! Want to wear something simple like a
white shirt or a black top? Add a pop of color with a great necklace or earrings.
-If possible go with long sleeves, it puts more attention on your faces and your
expressions.
-Stay away from clothes with busy patterns or anything that takes away from
the photo and the simple backgrounds we will be using.
What to bring:
-If you want to have more than one look for your photos (for example: casual
and more eloquent) bring a change of clothes and make sure to let me know so
I can plan time accordingly.
--Keep the bags and purses light, we’ll most likely be walking around for a
while to get different backgrounds and lots of luggage can become heavy after
a while.
-For kids, make sure to bring their favorite snack as well as water or juice, to
help keep them going (kids can get tired by the end of a session) and it also
comes in handy when we really need to get that one shot!
-For kids, feel free to bring props such as favorite stuffed animal or toy. Many
of these “props,” turn out to be warm childhood memories and what better
way to remember them then to photograph your child with them.

-Another fun thing for kids to bring is a recent piece of artwork. They will be
so proud of it that they’ll be happy to pose for the camera to show it off!
-Is there a fun song your little one loves, or a family game you always play?
Bring things that show your families personality and truly makes you who you
are.
How to prepare for the shoot:
-Most kids these days know what it means to smile and say cheese for their
moms smart phone. That’s a good thing! Feel free to take some extra photos in
weeks prior to work on that “real smile,” and not the cheesy fake one kids
become accustom to giving when asked to pose for a camera. Find what makes
he/she laugh or what works to get a genuine smile and bring that knowledge
with you to the session.
-If mom or dad are going to be getting any sun (real or fake) prior to the shoot
make sure to give yourself at least 24 hours for everything to even out before
going in front of the camera. A red, tired face isn’t an easy fix!
-For women, makeup should be slightly heavier than usual. We want a nice
finished look that accentuates your best features.
-If you’d like to bring the family dog to your session you are more than
welcome to! Just bring a sitter along so that we can do photos with and without
him.
-Saw something cool on Pinterest? Show me! I don’t always exactly replicate
those images but they usually end up being something super cool and fun that
I hadn’t thought of before!
