Tales of Taylorsville
October 2011 Tales of Taylorsville Dear Parents, Greetings! I would like to share how thankful I am to have met many Taylorsville parents this last month. It has been a pleasure to get to know the students and families! I invite you to come and introduce yourself to me as you are in and out of the building. I was able to meet several families during the Math and Science Night last week, and I look forward to meeting more families this week during the Chili Supper and Book Fair. I would like to let you know our teachers will be contacting you soon regarding Parent and Teacher conferences. We value parent involvement and communication, so we hope you will take this opportunity to sit down and discuss your child’s progress. We are doing many things to help all of our children be successful in school, and we look forward to sharing this information with you. As you are aware, schools are being held accountable to increasing levels, and we want to make sure we are communicating with parents every step of the way. As a reminder, students in third grade who do not pass the IREAD portion of this year’s ISTEP test will be retained, according to new legislation from our lawmakers. It is vital that we work together as a team to support every child in reading and mathematics. I would also like to share that Mrs. Turner asks about our students frequently in our conversations! Although we do not know a time line for her return, she is resting at home. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Again, I appreciate the opportunity to meet our Taylorsville families, and I hope you will contact me if you have a concern or a need. Sincerely, Mrs. Gant Page 2 Sunday T a l e s Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday o f T a y l o r s v i l l e Friday Saturday 1 October 2011 3 Elementary Principal’s Mtg 2 9 BCSC Rodeo 4 10am 2nd grade Good Apples 10 Board 11 Book Fair Mtg Central Family Night Columbus Day 12 We Ri bb on Red 24 Basketball Tryouts begin ek 30 31 Halloween 13 Early Childhood Health Screening 19 End of 1st 20 8 BCSC Rodeo 14 10am 2nd 15 grade Good Apples 21 22 Nine Wks 3rd Jim Basketball Jones 630PM Grades 46 & parents Jim Basketball Jones 23 6 Math Night 7 Book Fair 6-7PM begins RIF Distribution for 2nd & 4th Grades Busy Bee Parent Night 5:30 -7 2:30-7PM Chili Supper 5PM until Chili is gone 17 10am 2nd 18 PBIS mtg grade Good 1PM Tobacco Awareness Apples 1PM Convo PreK- 16 5 25 11-12 26 Meet Your Farmer Day 1st grade Parent Night6-8PM NO SCHOOL FALL RECESS 27 28 29 Page “I am in the world to change the world” ATTENTION PARENTS & STUDENTS: ALL personal property: backpacks, lunch boxes, jackets etc. should have the student’s first name & last name in/on them. Remember getting all dressed in your costume to go trick-or-treating? Pure spooky joy. To keep it fun, everyone needs to stay safe. Here are 13 helpful tips to make sure your kids have a healthy and happy Halloween. • • • • • • • • • • • • Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you don’t think they’re old enough to trick-or-treat on their own. There is safety in numbers. If they’re old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, tell your kids to stay in a group. Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating, and make sure they stick to it. Take the long way 'round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots. Try tick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch. Stay outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch. Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight. Remember, shorter = safer.Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure your kids’ costumes aren’t so long that they can trip over them. Don't cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see better. Quality-check treats. Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with. Say "no" to strangers.Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger. Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available. Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and lots of candy. Book Fair Notes for Parent Newsletter - - October 2011 Our BOOK FAIR is Coming SOON!
