Tales of Taylorsville
Dear Parents,
Greetings! I would like to share how thankful I am to have met many Taylorsville parents this last month. It has been a pleasure to get to know the students and families!
I invite you to come and introduce yourself to me as you are in and out of the building.
I was able to meet several families during the Math and Science Night last week, and
I look forward to meeting more families this week during the Chili Supper and Book
Fair.
I would like to let you know our teachers will be contacting you soon regarding Parent
and Teacher conferences. We value parent involvement and communication, so we
hope you will take this opportunity to sit down and discuss your child’s progress. We
are doing many things to help all of our children be successful in school, and we look
forward to sharing this information with you. As you are aware, schools are being
held accountable to increasing levels, and we want to make sure we are communicating
with parents every step of the way.
As a reminder, students in third grade who do not pass the IREAD portion of this
year’s ISTEP test will be retained, according to new legislation from our lawmakers.
It is vital that we work together as a team to support every child in reading and
mathematics.
I would also like to share that Mrs. Turner asks about our students frequently in our
conversations! Although we do not know a time line for her return, she is resting at
home. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
Again, I appreciate the opportunity to meet our Taylorsville families, and I hope you
will contact me if you have a concern or a need.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gant

Remember getting all dressed in your costume to go trick-or-treating? Pure
spooky joy. To keep it fun, everyone needs to stay safe. Here are 13 helpful tips
to make sure your kids have a healthy and happy Halloween.

Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you don’t think they’re old enough to
trick-or-treat on their own.
There is safety in numbers. If they’re old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult,
tell your kids to stay in a group.
Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating, and
make sure they stick to it.
Take the long way 'round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a
lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots.
Try tick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on.
And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch.
Stay outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their
candy from the porch.
Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their
costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.
Remember, shorter = safer.Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure
your kids’ costumes aren’t so long that they can trip over them.
Don't cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see
better.
Quality-check treats. Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy
that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with.
Say "no" to strangers.Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a
stranger.
Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes
looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights
where available.
Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and
lots of candy.
Book Fair Notes for Parent Newsletter - - October 2011
Our BOOK FAIR is Coming SOON!
The school library’s annual book fair will be Oct. 7 – 14. Check our Book Fair web page at
http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/taylorsvillefair for general information and a
link to preview books. Be watching for a Book Fair flyer and an information letter,
which students will bring home the week of October 3. Please mark your calendar for
Tuesday, October 11, to attend the Chili Supper and enjoy evening shopping at the
Book Fair.
We need parent volunteers to help with Book Fair, especially Oct. 6 during set-up before
the fair and repacking at the end on Oct. 17. If you can spare an hour or two, please call
the school library or send a note and give us your name, phone number, and date/time you
are available to help. Thank you!
