May 2016 - ABATE of Illinois
MAY 2016 On Tuesday May 10th Sangamon County declared a Proclamation officially declaring May Motorcycle Awareness Month. Our very own Josh Witkowski was there to receive it as a representative of Land of Lincoln A.B.A.T.E. ~~For non-routine activities on the calendar, and other upcoming events, look inside for flyers or notices with more details ~~ May 2016 Sun Mon 1 2 Tue 3 Wed 4 Awareness Rally 8 June 2016 Thu 5 Fri 6 Sun Mon Tue Wed 1 Lincoln Land Officer’s Mtg 6:30p Northenders VFW 9 10 11 12 16 17 18 19 13 20 Lincoln Land Chapter Meeting 7pm VFW 22 Fun Run #4 23 29 30 24 25 26 Thu 2 Fri Sat 3 4 10 11 17 18 24 25 Lincoln Land Officer’s Mtg 6:30p Northenders VFW Downed Riders Meeting 6:30 VFW 15 Sat 7 14 5 Fun Run #3 6 21 13 12 7 8 Downed Riders Meeting 6:30 VFW 14 15 Window wash at Rail Spliters 12-2p 27 28 9 16 Lincoln Land Chapter Meeting 7pm VFW 19 20 21 22 23 State Party @ Menard County 31 26 27 28 29 30 To the best knowledge of Lincoln Land ABATE, all event times, dates and locations are accurate at the time of printing and are subject to change or cancellation. President George Hurst We had 64 people at the April meeting, including a lot of new faces. Sweet and sour Meatballs, and pasta with meat sauce is on the menu for May so far. With the bad weather around the state the number for the Awareness Rally was down. A lot of the out-of-towners were at a very good pre-party. Most of Lincoln Land must have been out of town this weekend. The turnout of members at both events was down. Remember to carry membership applications to hand out when your talking A.B.A.T.E. to people. A lot happens between the time this newsletter goes to print and the meeting. Come to the meeting soyou are up-to-date on what is happening. Promote A.B.A.T.E George Vice President Stacey Furlow Hi everyone, I just want to remind everyone to mark your calendar and come out to IDOT on Sunday May 1st for the Awareness Ride to the Capitol. This is a good time for everyone to come out and show your support for A.B.A.T.E. and motorcyclist’s rights. It’s also important to show the politicians at the Capitol that we are a force to be reckoned with!! See you all there! Stacey Furlow MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR Lincoln Land members, We are having another great year. Our new member added to our roster right now stands at 67 for the year. If we can keep up the great work, we will be on track like last year. Thank you to those that have signed up new members this year. Let’s make sure we go out of our way to make them feel welcomed and appreciated as they should be. By the time this newsletter hits your hot little hands our riding season will be in full swing. Be safe out there and make sure you do your pre-trip inspections on your motorcycle before every ride. It might make the difference of life or the alternative. Make sure you carry at least two (2) membership applications in every vehicle so you have an opportunity to allow someone who rides to sign up to protect theirs and our rights. We as “Bikers/ Riders” (same thing) need to let the public know we are increasingly decreasing in size and are less than 2% of us are ABATE members fighting for 100% of all riders rights. If you can’t get a person to sign up, please invite them to our meetings and FUN RUNS to get to know us a little better. I have a sheet that states what to say to perspective members I can share with you if you want. Just Email or text me, and I will get it to you. Thank you. =============================================== ***** We are still needing a few spots filled for the Membership table at the Summer Thunder Tour stops. ***** I have a list of towns not covered. By the time you read this, we will be well in to motorcycle awareness month. ABATE officers will be working on proclaimations from local governments, media interviews, and all of the “public” parts of this month long awareness campaign, but have you thought about what you can do to help the effort? It’s easy to promote awareness on your own. Talk to friends and coworkers. When someone says “Great day for a ride”, say “yes it is, that’s why thousands of people ride in this state every day”. Do you use Facebook? Post something about being a motorcyclist, and also a mother, father, daughter, or son. Take the time to remind people we are out there. In addition to reminding people we are out there, take the time to explain why you ride. Yeah, most won’t get it, but those few that do might just spread the word about riding. Also, remind folks of all of the charitable causes the community supports, or the thousands of visitors and millions of dollars motorcycle tourism brings into the area. There are many different ways to support motorcycle awareness. Traditionally, awareness has only been a few press releases on a large scale and a rally. These are good things for us, but they should be backed up by personal experiences. I hope that with your help, we can make awareness a more personal thing for those out there who don’t ride. That's all for now. I’ll see you at our next membership meeting Thursday May 19th at the VFW Hall at 7 p.m. - SKI MEMBERSHIP REPORT Paula “Pi” Allen Membership Report as of April 27th, 2016 Number of members due each month: March: 37 April: 33 May: 52 Active: 650 Inactive: 1931 21 New Members!! He accused them of following too close to each other, and stated side by side riding was illegal in Utah. He then tried to accuse them of illegally carrying firearms when they had valid permits. Throughout the stop he treats them as threats, and finishes by taking their pictures and documenting them. The truth is revealed by the video. The Bandidos were following all proper laws. The Patrolman admits that the purpose of the stop was to document the members, not any infraction. His backup is heard saying, “Bandidos, I’d write them for everything I could”. Five miles down the road after this stop, these men were stopped again by UHP. These men were lawfully traveling and were subject to police action just because of their membership in an organization. We are guaranteed freedom of association by the First Amendment, yet these patrolmen took it upon themselves to punish free men for exercising that right. This is the blatant type of profiling that motorcycle rights groups like ABATE are hoping to put an end to. Across the country, several states have passed or are in the process of passing laws that prohibit this kind of activity. How does this kind of profiling affect the community? It allows a negative stereotype of bikers to flourish in the public. It continues the fiction of the “motorcycle gang”. Motorcycle clubs are not gangs. They are a free association of like minded brothers and sisters. I know what you’re thinking “But SKI, what about those club members that get arrested?” Ok, some bad apples get in, but you know what? We don’t treat other groups this way. How many members of the statehouse have been arrested for various crimes? What about our Governors? Despite how much our goverment may irritate us at times, I have yet to hear anyone refer to it as a criminal enterprise. When the myth of the “motorcycle gang” is allowed to spread, we see policies that hurt all members of the community. Most notable of these is the “no colors” policy adopted by businesses. Wearing a vest that belongs to a group? These places don’t care if its an old school MC, a christian group, LEMC, or a veteran’s group. All are treated with the same broad brush because of this myth. Locally, we have a business that has this policy. Mowie’s Cue on Toronto Rd has a “no colors” policy. When I called them about it, I was told how they didn’t want the wrong kind of biker in there. The problem with this misguided policy is it reinforces the image of a “bad biker” to the public. When the public buys into these myths, it makes it easier for government and law enforcement to profile or harass us. If the public is against you, then they will support efforts to “crack down” on bikers. They won’t care what kind of biker is targeted. In other words, if we don’t stand together, we will hang separately in a court of public opinion. It is our responsibility as brothers and sisters of the road to put an end to the lie of “motorcycle gangs”. We must stand together to show the public how ridiculous shows like “Sons of Anarchy” are when compared to real life. Bills in the SENATE HB4105 - VEC CD-BLUE DOT TAIL LIGHTS - ABATE SUPPORTS - This bill allows for the blue dot style taillights. It has passed the House, and a Senate committee with no opposition. ABATE expects this bill to pass the Senate soon on its way to becoming law. - Call Senator Andy Manar’s office at (217) 782-0228 and ask him to sponsor this bill. Senators Brady and McCann are sponsors, Illinois State Police support us, and it passed the house 114-0. As always if you have any questions about the legislators we are supporting, or the issues we are working on feel free to email or call me. I’ll see you at the next chapter meeting Thursday May 19th at 7 p.m. at the VFW on stockyard road. Until then, keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up - SKI A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois, Inc.
