Sir - Anyone who walks through Ram Colony situated between 10th Avenue (Ashok Nagar) and Postal Colony 1st Street in West Mambalam will notice the pathetic condition of a post-box. There is such a big hole through which any letter posted will slip through and touch Mother Earth immediately. I wonder why this post-box has been kept in front of a house. One would expect post-boxes to be kept near public places like parks, libraries, temples, hotels, banks and educational institutions. As it is we do not have adequate post boxes in Ashok Nagar. There was one at 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue junction but it disappeared all of a sudden. The post box on 11th Avenue is very close to a dustbin which people usually avoid. SMS or E-mail cannot give a soul (sole?) the satisfaction that a letter penned by a near and dear one gives. So we appeal to the authorities concerned to keep proper post-boxes in proper places. We consider a postman the harbinger of happy tidings and anything that assists this noble job of communication is highly respected. Dr. K. R. Chidambara Kumarasamy, 40, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar. Dangerous trijunction Sir, I am a 77-year-old retired pilot of Indian Air Force and a qualified and experienced flight safety officer and aircraft accident investigator. The trijunction of Thanickachalam Road, Thyagaraya Road and Malony Road in front of Hindi Prachara Sabha is a potentially dangerous spot. There are eateries, a bakery and petty shops at Thanickalam Road turning where many cars, motorcycles and scooters are illegally and dangerously parked on both sides of Thanikchalam Road where it starts to turn towards Venkatanarayana Road greatly reducing the available space for buses, cars, 2-wheelers etc. Those visiting tea shops on the edge of the road are an added danger. Road dividers are frequently shifted and drivers of buses taking a turn at this junction often pass close to pedestrians. At night, there is a need for a ‘red light’ on the platform at the gate of Hindi Prachara Sabha to show that it is a junction where vehicles turn right or left. Also, along Thanikachalam Road towards Venkatanarayana Road junction in front of Spencers, a road divider starts and goes upto the end of Venkatanarayan Road but there is no light to indicate the start of the junction. A bright red light is an absolute must due to heavy traffic, especially, in the evening and night. Also, cars take the wrong side of the median and proceed towards, Venkatanarayana road junction. Policemen quite often permit this to clear the traffic. Some bikes and cars are seen frequently speeding towards Thanickalam Road-Venkatanaraya road junction with Burkit Road. I am amazed that serious accidents have not yet taken place. Specific requirements are: 1. A ‘red light’ on Hindi Prachara Sabha platform at the trijunction to denote a dead end. 2. A ‘red light’ in front of Spencers where the median starts and goes upto Venkatanarayana Road. 3. Illegal and dangerous parking of cars/taxis, two-wheelers in front of eateries/shops, at the turning of Thanikachalam Road, near the trijunction should be strictly prohibited. 4. The huge tree in the way can easily be transplanted in another suitable location. 5. A board to show Rajambal Street next to the tree at right angle to Thanikachalam Road. 6. Effective, suitable speedbreakers in front of Block “C”, Silver Park Apartments. 7. Parking of vehicles outside the Pillayar temple and adjoining gate outside Hindi Prachara Sabha must be stopped. 8. Everyday a police vehicle with red and blue lights on top is seen parked in the most dangerous spot where Thanikachalam Road turns towards Venkatanarayana road. This needs to be rectified. – Wing Commander E.A. Murthy (Retd.), Thanikachalam Road, T. Nagar Need for speedbreakers Sir - I have been a resident of Baroda Street, West Mambalam for the last 20 years. We find it extremely difficult to reach Railway Border Road from our street as drivers of vehicles plying on Railway Border Road drive fast without slowing down or halting to allow other vehicles to enter. My vehicle was hit twice and I have seen quite a few accidents at this junction as vehicles from Baroda Street try to enter Railway Border Road. The need for speedbreakers at this intersection is extremely important as traffic intensity has also increased manifold. Further, this junction is close to a girls’ school. I took up the matter with Corporation officials who wanted me to go to the Police Department. As this is a request for the safety of the public, immediate attention must be given to this problem. While I have seen several speedbreakers installed in far less traffic congested areas within West Mambalam, it surprises me why no MAMBALAM TIMES attention has been Ashok Nagar - K.K. SADANAND FAR AWAY FIELDS Far away fields may look greener and exert a pull to make you move from your hopeless porch. Show me a man who resists the pull and I will, as my great friend Subramanian Swamy exploded on Times Now and squashed host Arnob Goswami by branding him ‘liar’ many times a few months ago when five Indians were in Lankan death row, awaiting a swing out of life. It is good in snatches as perhaps all good things are. During my school days in the High School, part of which was in Madras, I used to dash back to my village in Kannur and walk through the green paddy fields scrounging an unseen digital scent of the grain within. It may be because my core was in Kannur though the crass existence was in Chennai, and the link was the faraway greenery. Now I look in vain for the greenery since tar and concrete jungles occupy the acres that in my youth were green with life and a peg in one’s journey in pastoral life that fed the hopes of a youth rooted in nature and non-competitive except sportingly and in fine arts. When, through multifarious activities a desired result happens, the human and mechanical cogs lose individuality and become a mould and to that extent become a process without any human touch, the perfect setting for the kind of life we are forced to face and live in without a thought of the far away field which is greener. A cog can only be colourblind if you have to survive the harsh awakening. The struggle to break out of the stranglehold created by one’s aspirations is what drives individuals into amorphous groups called politicians, who are their own law makers, to find the fabulous greenery, not far away in a long time, but now at hand. That is why there are so many of them with different hues and cries, the booty bags growing cavernous. Let us get Arnob and my good friend Subramanian Swami to debate this and hope to see sparks flying, but not hurting any more. It is time spent intellectually and noisily.
