Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell
you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over
one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people
who have no need of repentance. Luke 15:6c-7.

This week’s Gospel tells us that God will forgive and accept
sinners into the Kingdom, Jesus told three parables about being
lost and then found. The first parable was about a shepherd
who had one hundred sheep but lost one. The shepherd
searched until he found the lost lamb. There was much
celebration on the part of the shepherd and his neighbors
because something lost was found. The second parable
concerned a widow who searched her house until she found a
lost piece of silver. Finally, Jesus told the parable of the
prodigal son who squandered his share of his inheritance and
went home to beg his father to let him be a worker. Instead the
father was so thrilled to see this son who had been lost to him
that he threw a big party. All three of these parables illustrate
the joy that will be in heaven when one lost sinner is found.
This Tuesday is the
Feast Day of St. Robert
Bellarmine! Please join
us on Tuesday,
September 17th at 9:00
a.m., for an All Parish /
All School Mass, to
celebrate the Feast Day
of St. Robert Bellarmine,
Patron Saint of
Catechists and
Catechumens.
Born at Montepulciano, Italy, October 4th, 1542,
Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino was the third of
ten children. His mother, Cinzia Cervini, a niece of Pope
Marcellus II, was dedicated to almsgiving, prayer,
meditation and fasting.
Robert entered the newly formed Society of Jesus in
1560. When Robert Bellarmine was ordained in 1570, the
study of Church history and the fathers of the Church was
in a sad state of neglect. He devoted his energy to these
two subjects, as well as to Scripture. He was the first
Jesuit to become a professor at Louvain, where he became
famous for his Latin sermons.
Bellarmine was made a cardinal by Pope Clement VIII
on the grounds that "he had not his equal for learning."
While he occupied apartments in the Vatican, Bellarmine
relaxed none of his former austerities. He limited his

household expenses to what was
barely essential, eating only the food
available to the poor. He was known
to have ransomed a soldier who had
deserted from the army and he used
the hangings of his rooms to clothe
poor people, remarking, "The walls
won't catch cold."
Among many activities, he became
theologian to Pope Clement VIII,
preparing two catechisms which have
had great influence in the Church. In
1576, he was appointed to the chair
of controversial theology at the
Roman College, becoming Rector in
1592; he went on to become
Provincial of Naples in 1594 and
Cardinal in 1598.
This outstanding scholar and
devoted servant of God defended the
Apostolic See. His writings on the
Papacy were used during Vatican I
(1869-1870) when the infallibility of
the Pope was declared a Doctrine of
the Church.
This saint was the spiritual father
of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, helped St.
Francis de Sales obtain formal
approval of the Visitation Order, and
in his prudence opposed severe
action in the case of Galileo. He has
left us a host of important writings,
including works of devotion and
instruction, as well as controversy.
Bellarmine died on September 17th,
1621. The process for his
canonization was begun in 1627 but
was delayed until 1930. In 1930,
Pope Pius XI canonized him and the
next year declared him a doctor of
the Church. He was one of the most
important figures in the CounterReformation.
Catholic saints are holy people and
human people who lived
extraordinary lives. Each saint the
Church honors responded to God's
invitation to use his or her unique
gifts. God calls each one of us to be a
saint.

Faith Sharing for Women
September 17th to December 3rd
7-9 p.m.
in the Faith Formation Office
Learning about the strengths and weaknesses of some of
the characters in the Bible is a great way to see how God
has made each of us special. Our sharing of ideas helps us
see different perspectives of how God has guided us and
is still doing so today. The fellowship helps us keep our
minds focused in a positive way.
We meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month to
discuss the reading from the books we are studying. The
books can be purchased from Dawn Dwyer in the Faith
Formation office (room 103) for $13. The first informal
meeting is September 10th at 7 p.m. in the Faith Formation
office to pick up books, get a schedule, and catch up. No
study will be done that day.
Think about it. This is a great time to get into study…
along with the school year. All adult ladies are welcome
and encouraged. For more information contact Dawn
Dwyer at her office (937-1531).
Our books will be:
“A Walk thru the Book of Jonah Experiencing God’s
Relentless Grace”
· Parts of “2 Corinthians – Power in Weakness”
·
Parish Directory
We are beginning to put our 60th
Anniversary Pictorial Directory together so
that it is available before Christmas. The

or requests to not have your address and telephone
number in the directory will be taken after this date.
1. If you still want your picture in the directory, please
send it to the Parish Office or email
pastoralassociate@strobertbellarmine.com. Pictures
should be a close-up.
2. Parish groups if you want your group to be in the
directory, please send your pictures to the above
email.
3. If you do not wish to have your address and
telephone number in the directory, please call the
Parish Office or email the above address.
4. If you have any questions, please call the parish
office.
Give Us This Day: Daily Prayers
By mistake some parishioners were given a copy of the
October “Give Us This Day” prayer book. October books
are for parishioners who have already ordered “Give Us
This Day.” So if you received an October book please
return it to the Sacristy. This will keep us from having to
purchase new books for the parishioners who ordered
them. Thank You! There are still copies available. The
copies of this book can now be found at all the entrances
of the church. If parishioners like this prayer book then
you will be able to order it through the Parish Office at a
discounted price.
Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults
The R.C.I.A. is a journey for
those who have never been
baptized; have been baptized into
another denomination and want
to convert to Catholicism; or
who began the journey as an infant but did not receive the
remaining Sacraments of Initiation- the Eucharist and
Confirmation. If one of these categories describes you or
your spouse, or a friend or a neighbor or someone at
work then the RCIA is the answer. Please call Laura
Scanlan at the rectory (313) 937-1500 ext. 114 for more
information.

What is Stephen Ministry?
Stephen Ministry is a way parishes can provide highquality care and outreach to hurting people in the parish
and community.
Stephen Ministers are parish members who have gone
through 50 hours of training to provide one-to-one, Christ
-centered care. Each Stephen Minister is matched with a
hurting person – men are paired with men, women with
women – and meets weekly with that person to listen,
care, pray, and encourage.
Stephen Ministers care for those dealing with grief,
divorce, job loss, hospitalization, financial struggles,
loneliness, convalescence, terminal illness, and many
other life difficulties.

Family Faith Connect
If you have ever lost a child either at a shopping mall,
amusement park, or outside playing, you know the
anguish of losing something beyond measure. The joy you
experienced when you found each other is often
something you can’t even put into words. Part of you
wants to be angry because the child caused you so much
grief, but mostly you are just so happy to see the child,
you can hardly speak. If we’ve had experiences like this,
then we have an indication about how God feels when we
are truly sorry for our sins and want to be part of God’s
family.
What is an irreplaceable or valuable item that belongs to
your family? Perhaps you have an item that belonged to
someone who has died, or something that has been passed
down through the generations. Try to trace the item’s
history through your family and then make a connection to
it and today’s Gospel. What would happen if you lost the
item, or it turned up missing? How hard would you look
for it? How would you feel when you found it? Finally,
consider how your experience might help illustrate the joy
Jesus described in this Gospel when one sinner repents.
Discussion Starters
1. I lost something really important one time. I
remember feeling . . .
2. I think the people who are lost today are . . . One thing
that I could do to help them be found is . . .
3. The one person I need to forgive is . . .

EXPECTATIONS IN EDUCATIONAL ATHLETICS
The administration and staff of our parish/school, all CYO parishes/schools, and the CYO athletic office wish to make it clear that CYO sports are educational
activities. Athletes, parents, and friends must be aware of our expectations with regard to sportsmanship.
Unlike professional sports, as a spectator at an athletic event, you are part of the activity, much like the athletes, coaches, and officials. As a participant,
(spectator or team member) we expect that you will maintain good sportsmanship or refrain from attending CYO athletic events.
t
t
It is expected that as participants and spectators, we will support in a positive way our own team remembering that the athletes, coaches, and
officials are not perfect and will make mistakes. Negative, derogatory cheers or actions aimed at either team are not acceptable in educational
athletics.
It is expected that you will accept the decisions of the officials without vocalizing disagreement. Officials are an important part of this educational
activity. We are sending the wrong message when we challenge or abuse the game official sent to the game to administer these educational
activities.
t
At all times it is expected that we will respect one another; adults and athletes alike. This especially includes our
opponents and officials, without whose involvement, sport contests would not occur.
Signature of Student Athlete and Parents/Guardians indicates that they have read, understand and agree to the above.

This form will be kept on file at the parish/school. A new form must be filed for each sport a student participates in. A form must be submitted by parents to the
coaches at the start of each new athletic season.
