2015 ANNUAL REPORT The Magic House, St. Louis Childre n’s Museum From the Board Dear Friends, The mission of The Magic House is to engage all children in hands-on learning experiences that encourage experimentation, creativity and the development of problem-solving skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic. We made great strides in fulfilling this mission and creating a place of wonder in 2015. The year began with a bang as we observed the Chinese New Year and the opening of Children’s China: Celebrating Culture, Character and Confucius, a nationally traveling exhibit created by The Magic House that brings China’s ancient traditions and contemporary customs to life. Our 2015 finished in an equally wondrous way – with the grand opening of Wonder Works, our new educational adventure for young children. More than 565,000 visitors came to the Museum to experience these and other original exhibits last year. Throughout the year, The Magic House offered innovative hands-on experiences that provided learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), 21st-century skills, and free access to the Museum’s resources. Thanks to the extraordinary support of our donors, we were able to provide over 80,000 children, families and schools in need with free educational opportunities in 2015. The Magic House is grateful to the corporations, foundations and individuals noted in these pages. Because of the generous support of friends like you, it’s no wonder that The Magic House had such a successful year. In 2015, The Magic House celebrated a year full of beauty, magic, joy and wonder. From the unveiling of Wonder Works, the Museum’s new early childhood environment, to the opening of Children’s China, a nationally traveling exhibit that explores modern Chinese culture, The Magic House focused on creating exhibits and programs that advance STEM education, promote the development of 21st-century skills, and provide access for all. John T. Drexler Chair, Board of Directors The Magic House celebrated the wonder of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with new exhibits and programs for children, families and schools. Wonder Works Make-It Workshop Have you ever wondered why balls float in the air? Or where sand comes from? Or how a microscope works? The answers to these—and many other questions—can be discovered in Wonder Works, The Magic House’s new STEM learning environment for young children. Wonder Works takes curious minds and busy bodies on an educational adventure filled with hands-on, feet-on fun. Kids can explore simple machines as they take a catapult challenge, harness the power of air to make whirligigs spin, and design their own ocean creatures and watch them come to life in a virtual sea. STEM learning also took root in The Magic House’s new destination for do-it-yourselfers, the Make-It Workshop. This family-friendly maker space invites visitors to invent, build and create with real tools and technology, from a 3D printer to a sewing machine. The supplies for this maker space were generously supported by the Union Pacific Foundation this year. Wonder Works was generously made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services; Bill and Sally Canfield; Harry Edison Foundation; Eric P. & Evelyn E. Newman Foundation; Crawford Taylor Foundation; KnowledgeLake; Ron and Carmen Cameron; Larry and Beth Lenke; Monsanto Fund; Bunge North America; the Employees Community Fund of Boeing; Graybar Foundation; Paul, Susan, Jennifer & Lauren Goldberg; Chip Walker; and Ameren. Renovation of the facility was partially underwritten by the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Neighborhood Assistance Program. The Magic House also launched several educational experiences in conjunction with Wonder Works. With the support of Boeing, the Museum developed an outreach program for the early childhood classroom, a professional development workshop for educators, and a family science program at the Museum, which we piloted with the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Funding from Maritz enabled disadvantaged young children to participate in Wonder Works field trips free of charge. And in partnership with the PNC Foundation, The Magic House is creating Wonder Words, an interactive program to help young children grow the STEM vocabulary they will need in order to read and succeed in school. The Magic House is grateful to all these Wonder Works partners for helping us share the wonder of STEM with young children, their parents and teachers. STEM Education The Magic House branched out to make STEM learning opportunities accessible throughout the region with the support of our community partners. Ameren enabled the Museum to provide no-cost STEM-focused field trips and outreach programs to children in low-income areas, introducing them to the magic of magnetism, electricity, simple machines and more. The Express Scripts Foundation funded a district-wide initiative in the Jennings School District that provided students, parents and teachers with STEM programs and resources. The Edward Chase Garvey Memorial Foundation allowed children to take a journey down the Math Path, the Museum’s updated exhibit on the everyday applications of math. And thanks to MasterCard, developing STEM skills meant business. The global payment and technology company supported New Biz on the Block, an entrepreneurship education program, as well as STEM Family Nights, free evenings at the Museum featuring hands-on STEM activities, for underserved schools in Ferguson, Normandy, Wentzville and other communities across the region. Children explore science, technology, engineering and math in Wonder Works. 3 2015 Annual Report n The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum The Magic House fostered the development of 21st-century skills including global awareness, communication, health literacy, critical thinking and creativity to help children succeed. Global Awareness Children build global awareness and language arts skills in Children’s China and Very Eric Carle. An increasingly important 21st-century skill is global awareness, the understanding of other nations, cultures and languages, and the ability to work with and learn from the individuals who represent them. In February, children got the chance to experience life in China without even packing a suitcase. The Magic House stamped visitors’ passports for Children’s China: Celebrating Culture, Character and Confucius, an interactive exhibit about children’s lives in China today. The Magic House was one of just five youth museums nationwide selected to create a traveling exhibit as part of the Asian Culture Exhibit Series, an initiative funded by the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Association of Children’s Museums to promote an understanding of Asian cultures. Children’s China: Celebrating Culture, Character and Confucius transports families across the globe to China, where timeless traditions and modern lifestyles meet. Created by The Magic House in partnership with the Confucius Institute at Webster University and CharacterPlus, Children’s China guides visitors through immersive hands-on environments and activities, from wok cooking in a restaurant to caring for endangered panda cubs, and from learning to write Chinese characters in a classroom to dancing in a dragon parade. Support for educational field trips to the exhibit was generously provided by the Trio Foundation of St. Louis. After its showing at The Magic House, Children’s China embarked on a five-year tour of children’s museums across the country. The exhibit’s opening coincided with the Chinese New Year, and The Magic House ushered in the Year of the Sheep in style. In partnership with the St. Louis Modern Chinese School and Chinese Culture and Education Services, the Museum hosted a full schedule of festivities sponsored by Moneta Group. Events included Chinese games such as ping-pong and jump rope; music, drumming and dancing with the St. Louis Modern Chinese School; a martial arts demonstration from St. Louis Shaolin Kung Fu School as part of the Centene Charitable Foundation’s Fitness Fun Fridays program; and Chinese calligraphy and brush painting workshops offered through the Visiting Artist Series, made possible with the support of the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis, Center Oil Company, Advisory Research and Piper Jaffray. Cultural programs also featured observances of the Lantern Festival, a culmination of the Chinese New Year when beautiful paper lamps are illuminated, and Children’s Day, a celebration of young people. Elders are revered in Chinese culture, so it was fitting for The Magic House’s Grand Committee to host A Grand China Celebration. This very special event featured dinner, Chinese crafts, a performance of the traditional lion dance, and a chance to explore the Museum’s China-inspired sandcastle, adorned with pandas and dragons. Thanks to presenting sponsor Moneta Group and all the event’s donors, this celebration for all generations drew more than 225 grandparents, parents and children, and raised $35,000 for the Grandparent Scholarship Fund to provide free educational experiences for children in need. Language Arts/Communication Once upon a time, there was a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar…and he had the very big job of helping young children master 21st-century language arts skills. In October, little visitors to The Magic House got the chance to spread their wings and experience Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit as they inched their way to literacy proficiency. Co-organized by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, this traveling exhibit explores the words and pictures of the beloved children’s book author and illustrator Eric Carle. The Magic House was very excited to have Wells Fargo Advisors as the sponsor of the exhibit’s St. Louis showing, while the Mary Ranken Jordan and Ettie A. Jordan Charitable Foundation supported free field trips for underserved students. 5 2015 Annual Report n The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum Health Literacy The Magic House got a jump on helping families understand important health information and promoting positive health practices. With support from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Museum carried out a two-year initiative in partnership with St. Louis Children’s Hospital to become a valuable health resource in the St. Louis community. Through this initiative, visitors to the Children’s Village Market now have a healthier shopping experience, thanks to Schnuck Markets. Their support enabled the Museum to update the store with signage that promotes MyPlate, the USDA’s current nutrition guidelines, and to add grocery cases featuring nutritious foods provided for dramatic play, including lean proteins, dairy, fresh produce and whole grains. The Museum also created Busy Bodies, an educational outreach program with six complementary exhibit components that focuses on helping kids understand how active living and healthy eating impact the body’s muscles, bones, brain, circulation and heart. In March, The Magic House was invited to showcase the program at Missouri STEM Day at the Capitol in Jefferson City. The Magic House’s year featured a calendar full of family-friendly wellness events: Fitness Fun Fridays, a monthly program of free Friday night fitness activities, from hula hooping to hip hop, all sponsored by the Centene Charitable Foundation; The Art of Yoga, a parent-child preschool class that put a new twist on the ancient practice, combining poses, story time and art; National Get Outdoors Day, a summer celebration of fresh-air fun on the Museum’s grounds; the Fall Farm Festival, agricultural activities offered in partnership with the Missouri and Illinois Farm Bureaus; and Happy, Healthy Halloween, a candy-free celebration sponsored by St. Louis Children’s Hospital that offered tricks and healthy treats along with a monster mash dance party to get families moving and grooving. All of these healthy happenings culminated in St. Lou Is Jumping. This regional effort led by The Magic House was designed to help kids get a hop, skip and a jump on fitness and avoid the summer slump using Missouri’s official state exercise, the jumping jack. In partnership with presenting sponsor Jamba Juice, the St. Louis Rams, the Midwest Dairy Council and media sponsor KSDK’s Show Me St. Louis, St. Lou Is Jumping invited kids to participate in weekly fitness challenges, receive healthy living tips, and earn free admission to The Magic House. We capped off the program with an effort to officially break a Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous jumping jacks, attempted on the field of the Edward Jones Dome. The Magic House is proud that St. Lou Is Jumping inspired more than 11,000 children and families to jumpstart a physical activity program. 6 2015 Annual Report n The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum The Magic House made good on our commitment to become a Good to Grow! museum. This achievement recognized by the Association of Children’s Museums acknowledges those museums that made exemplary efforts to promote family health and wellness through exhibits and programs, and that encourage kids to develop a lifetime of healthy habits including eating good foods in the right amounts, getting plenty of exercise, reducing screen time and connecting with nature. The Magic House is one of only eight museums nationwide to receive the Good to Grow! designation. Critical Thinking There’s more to education than the three Rs. Successful 21st-century students and citizens need to excel at the four Cs: critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. The Magic House made a move to support critical-thinking skills when we created Kings, Queens & Castles, a children’s chess exhibit developed in partnership with the World Chess Hall of Fame. This innovative exhibit brings the game of chess to life and provides an age-appropriate introduction to game strategy. Visitors enter the exhibit by walking across a drawbridge into a medieval castle with a giant checkerboard floor, then get the chance to dress as their favorite piece and compete in a life-sized match. The fun and games don’t end when families leave; they can take the exhibit experience home with a mobile app that creates a personalized photo book and connects to a digital chess game. After its debut at the World Chess Hall of Fame, Kings, Queens & Castles will travel to The Magic House before touring museums and libraries across the country. Creativity Children also hammered away at building their learning and innovation skills when The Magic House debuted Forts and Clubhouses, a special summertime exhibit sponsored by Alberici Constructors. Kids used their best tools—their imaginations—to transform cardboard boxes, colorful blankets, simple furniture and fluffy pillows into fantastic fortresses of their own designs. This do-it-yourself exhibit was inspired by Gene Toombs III, the chairman emeritus of MiTek Industries, longtime Board member at The Magic House and sponsor of the Toombs House in the Kids’ Construction Zone. In appreciation for his exceptional generosity and service to the Museum, we presented him with the 2015 Great Friend to Kids Award at our annual donor recognition breakfast in November. (Above Right, Right) Children develop health literacy skills in the Children’s Village Market and critical thinking skills in Kings, Queens & Castles. (Right) The Magic House’s Board Secretary Matuschka Briggs, Chair John Drexler and Karen Drexler celebrate at The Magic Ball, a fundraiser for Access for All. (Below) Access for All provides free educational experiences for youth organizations and schools including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri and the St. Louis Public Schools. The Magic House continued our enduring commitment to providing free educational services for all children, families and schools in need. St. Louis Public Schools The Magic Ball The Magic House is dedicated to sharing our resources with all the children in our community, and especially those in the St. Louis Public Schools. The Museum made a commitment to provide free field trips to every preschool and Kindergarten student in the district’s early childhood centers and elementary schools. Early learners take part in a guided exploration of Wonder Works, complete with a hands-on literacy activity, while Kindergarteners participate in Community Workers, a program in the Children’s Village that focuses on learning about the elements of successful communities. Both of these programs, like all field trips at The Magic House, align with current educational standards. In October, The Magic House’s Friends Committee threw The Magic Ball, a fantastic 36th birthday party for the Museum. Chaired by Linda and Jesse Hunter, this very special event welcomed nearly 500 guests to the beautiful Peabody Opera House, with festivities including dinner, a silent auction and a lively program of entertainment hosted by comedians and St. Louis natives the Sklar Brothers that featured speed painter Tim Decker. With generous support from presenting sponsor Centene Charitable Foundation, and major sponsors August A. Busch III Charitable Trust, Emerson, Edward Jones, Krey Distributing, Brenda and Joe McKee, Monsanto, St. Louis Rams, and Gene and Judy Toombs, the event raised more than $340,000 to benefit Access for All. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri The Magic House received some big news when we learned that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri selected the Museum as its Community Partner of the Year. This honor was given in recognition of The Magic House’s donation of free memberships to every Big Brother and Big Sister paired with a Little sibling. The Magic House also provides free evening events when the Museum is open exclusively to Big and Little pairs and their families, offering a joyful and kid-friendly environment where everyone is welcome. The theme of The Magic Ball was inspired by the Museum’s beloved Van de Graaff generator, the “magic ball” that produces harmless static electricity and creates a hair-raising experience for visitors. This iconic exhibit symbolizes our unique brand of electrifying hands-on learning. The Magic House is committed to bringing such exciting educational opportunities to all the children in our community. Through Access for All, the Museum is able to provide free field trips for students in disadvantaged neighborhoods; free outreach programs to urban and rural schools, libraries and hospitals; free family nights for youth organizations; and free admission for military and foster families, as well as other populations. Access for All ensures that The Magic House can continue sparking a sense of wonder in all children. The Magic House thanks our many donors, partners, visitors and friends who made 2015 such a wonderful year. 9 2015 Annual Report n The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum Operating Statement of Activity Revenue Support for year ended December 31, 2015 REVENUE AND SUPPORT Traveling Exhibits 6% Admissions$2,196,659 Grants and Contributions 1,798,971 Membership966,886 Cafe and Museum Shop 791,044 Education and Program Services 473,149 Traveling Exhibits 355,875 TOTAL REVENUE AND SUPPORT Board of Directors Cafe and and Museum Shop Membership 12% 15% Programs 7% Carole G.
