On Wednesday night, Sue and ASPAN President-elect Twilla Shrout are hosting a small reception for attendees from their home components, PANAC and Missouri-Kansas, the time and location TBA. The Chicago Hilton Hotel overlooks Lake Michigan and is within 5-8 blocks of many Chicago landmarks: the Sears Tower, State Street shopping, the Chicago Art Museum, the Navy Pier, and the Magnificent Mile. Take a leisurely walk, use public transportation, or even a water taxi to see the towering sites. To register or for Conference information, go to www.aspan.org. President’s Message: Fertilizer: It’s Good for the Soil! Shay Glevy, RN, BSN, CPAN, CAPA Growing your own has many components--seeds, sun, water and cultivators. But what enriches the soil and keeps plants blooming? You guessed it, fertilizer! The dictionary defines fertilizer as, “a substance used to make soil more fertile.” Fertile, an adjective, means, “Producing or bearing fruit in great quantities; characterized by great resourcefulness of thought or imagination.” It makes me wonder, how fertile and fruitful am I? What can each of us do to fertilize and improve the soil around us, so that we can bear fruit, be both resourceful and a resource to colleagues? To start with, we can be selective in our sources for contact hours. When I attend a PANAC education program, at the State, District or Chapter level, I enrich my knowledge in our specialty and gather nuggets of information to share with colleagues to enrich their practice as well. By attending ASPAN conferences, achieving certification, or pursuing an advanced degree, I grow within myself and expand my practice. PANAC supports its members in their quest for enrichment through the Alice Wise Memorial Fund Scholarship. Alice Wise was a founding member of PANAC who was resourceful in thought and imagination. But could she have imagined 34 years ago, that PANAC would grow to over 1,400 members and offer educational opportunities across the state? Could she have envisioned a scholarship named for her, available to members at their fingertips, a click away at www.panac.org? I think she would be truly amazed! PANAC has grown and blossomed from 200 Recovery Room nurses to over 1400 perianesthesia nurses, who are grounded in evidence-based practice and share their expertise with colleagues. In Chapters and Districts, new PANAC leaders are emerging, who are also resourceful and filled with imagination. Is this your time to join them, to enrich your practice? Don’t miss the opportunity; go fertilize! References: http//merriam-webster.com/browse/firefox. Accessed Feb. 22, 2013. 1 Pulseline eRNie Edits Pulseline Ernestine Nunes, RN, CPAN, CNOR PANAC is once again seeking the elusive ASPAN Gold Leaf Award for component excellence, presented at the April National Conference in Chicago. As Terry Trautloff, PANAC’s Gold Leaf and Promotional Chairperson, compiled the submission packet, it occurred to me, how very proud we can be of our component. With over 1450 members, we are the largest ASPAN component and growing not only in members but in new leaders—a most viable asset. Our Chapters offer an easy step-up to professional involvement—and a means for members to connect with each other. It is the connection that counts, that brings us together as colleagues, and keeps us coming to meetings. PANAC and ASPAN are more than organizations; they are you and I, and the nurses we work with. We are more than members of PANAC. We are PANAC, and we are proud to go for ASPAN’s Gold Leaf Award. Great job, Terry. Pulseline wants to celebrate PANAC members’ accomplishments. Please send bragging notes and pictures to me at enunsca@aol.com. The Nurses’ Float: Flowers, Seeds and Coffee Grounds A Publication of the PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association of California Winner 2011, 2008 ASPAN Component Newsletter 1-8 Pages ASPAN National Conference People’s Choice Award 2012, 2011, 2010, 2007, 2002, 2000, & 1999 2012-2013 Executive Officers President Shay Glevy, BSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA President-elect Tess Mazloomian, MS, RN, CCRN, CPAN, CAPA Secretary Anatita Invina, BSN, RN, CPAN Treasurer Rubymae Bishop, BSN, RN, CPAN Education Chair Lori Silva, RN, CCRN, CPAN By Anna Jackson, BSN, RN, CAPA OR nurses began the non-profit, Bare Root Inc. in 2007 to raise money for the 2013 Rose Parade’s, The Nurses’ Float. They raised $400,000. In December, 2012, Phoenix Float Designs and the nurse organizers called for volunteers to work on the 55-foot float at the Rose Palace in Pasadena. Eighteen nurses and staff from Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s Short Stay, PACU, and OR showed up on December 1 for 8-hour “float building” shifts. Our first day was an 8 am-4:30 pm shift doing the dry decorating: gluing coffee grounds to resemble tree bark (my job), gluing crushed flowers and seeds, and trimming or “plucking” flowers. Everything was so organized. Each volunteer received a commemorative t-shirt and lots of photo coverage by newspapers and TV. Some of us went back a second time on December 30. Kevin MacVane was on the 8 am-4:30 pm shift while I did a 3 pm-11:30 pm shift. This was much more exciting with lots of flower prep and placement of flowers in individual vases! The float truly came together by nightfall and was finished by the 6:00 am deadline on December 31. It was great meeting nurses from all over California and from out of state! I was proud to see The Nurses’ Float in the Rose Parade, and to see riding on the float, Sister Terrence Landini, LCM, retired nurse, representing Providence’s Little Company of Mary of Torrance, CA. Nurses, the Phoenix Builders learned, are great le ader s a nd get work done! They were a m a zed at our w i l l i ng ne s s to do any job they a sked. ASPAN Region 1 Director’s Spring Update By Debbie Bickford, BSN, RN, CPAN, ASPAN Region 1 Director Just as the national November election news is ebbing, ASPAN begins the election process for the 2013 Board of Directors. Each year, members are asked to review the candidate profiles on the ASPAN website and vote before the end of February. I hope you all realize that your vote does indeed effect how this organization functions in the years to come. While we share a common passion for perianesthesia nursing, each state or component has individual needs. Your component leaders received your votes and consider your wishes when they vote at the Representative Assembly (RA). If you are in Chicago on Saturday night before the National Conference, PLEASE stop by and meet with the candidates. This is your chance to talk with them and voice your concerns. It is open to all members—the more the merrier! It’s hard to believe that National Conference is less than a month away. Before you know it, we’ll be at the closing breakfast, hearing about next year’s Conference in Las Vegas. Big news for Region 1, next year’s National Conference team is headed by Nevada’s Susan O’Day and includes PANAC’s Lori Silva. Sue is seeking speaker suggestions and lots of volunteers! If you are heading to Chicago, here are some suggestions to get the most out of the National Conference, besides attending the excellent educational sessions: Sunday: In the morning, come to the Representative Assembly and sit in the gallery to hear the candidates’ speeches and the agenda discussions in preparation for afternoon voting. You can come and go at your pleasure while watching ASPAN in action. In the evening, sport your favorite team’s gear for Component Night. It’s your chance to meet fellow Californian’s in Chicago. Eat, drink, and have fun. Buy a few raffle tickets to support each other’s component. You just might win a prize! Monday: At the Opening Ceremonies, President Sue Carter will address the attendees, introduce the Component Presidents and the ASPAN Board before we hear the dynamic keynote speaker. The afternoon sessions are followed by Best Practice Posters and presentations. The Exhibit Hall opens that evening with the latest technology and new practice information. Check the Bulletin Board and the conference newsletter, PArtiCUlars, for news and component get-togethers. For additional contact hours, attend the ASPAN Speaker Development Presentations and cheer on members who are honing their speaker skills. Tuesday: There are lots of educational tracks, poster boards, and exhibits to explore. Later that night celebrate with Sue Carter at the President’s Reception. This fun night is a dressy affair with food, drink, and lots of dancing and partying. Wednesday: Sign up to attend the Development Luncheon with your registration, as tickets are limited at the conference. Besides lunch with colleagues, you’ll enjoy a great speaker and the proceeds from the luncheon support ASPAN scholarships! Thursday: Rise and shine early! Come to the Closing Breakfast Ceremony with new and old friends, secure contact information for future networking, and end the week hearing incoming ASPAN President Twilla Strout’s vision for the coming year. Pocket Program Guides keep you on track throughout the conference and make your experience richer. If you see abbreviations you don’t understand, ask someone. There is never a foolish question. For instance, if you see a session with SPG, that is a Specialty Practice Group for members only. ASPAN SPG annual membership is an additional $15 to join but entitles you to newsletters and a chance to network and share best practices with other SPG members. You can join at the Chicago Conference and attend their members’ only meeting. If you filled out Willingness to Participate form last November, ASPAN Committees meet this year at 7:00 am on Monday morning. If this is your first or second conference, come to the First Timer’s Meeting for a heads up on how to get the most out of the week. The meetings are Sunday evening and Monday morning. Refer to your pocket guide for time and place. If you can’t attend, we will have this presentation on ASPAN’s website for your viewing along with each day’s PArtiCUlars. There is so much to see and do; you may need a vacation after the conference! I hope to meet many of you, so if you recognize me, please come up and say hi. This is your conference: Approach the experience in a way you can feel uplifted and fulfilled. See you soon, Deb. Scholarships Benefit PANAC Members ASPAN and PANAC announced their Scholarship Recipients for 2013. Lori Silva from Modesto, CA, is one of six 2012 ASPAN National Conference Attendance Scholarship recipients for 2013 in Chicago. The ASPAN Scholarships application deadline for next year is on or before July 1, 2013. Funds from ASPAN Development’s Hail, Honor, Salute campaign support ASPAN Scholarships for education, certification, and humanitarian service. The PANAC Alice Wise Scholarship Fund’s $500 Award for National Conference went to 3 applicants, Kevin MacVane, Los Angeles, and Rubymae Bishop, Newport Beach. Terry Trautloff, Fullerton, and Tess Mazoomian from Mission Viejo, received $250 scholarships for Recertification. The annual application period for the AWSF is October 1 to December 15. ASPAN Seeks 2014 Speakers By Susan O’Day, 2014 National Conference Strategic Work Team Coordinator Do you know a dynamic speaker who presents on an interesting, current topic? This is the kind of speaker we want for the next ASPAN National Conference in Las Vegas, April 27-May 1, 2014. ASPAN is accepting Speaker Proposals until May 15, 2013. If you know a speaker, encourage them to submit the Speaker Proposal Form available at www.aspan.org/Events/Speaker Proposal Form. Instructions for submission are on the form. Pulseline 4 PANAC Caps Week With PANAW Bags Pearls from the PANAC Winter Conference in Burbank By Peggy Holbrook, BSN, RN, CPAN PANAC presented bright green PANAW bags to all attendees at the Burbank Winter Seminar—capping off a week of PANAW celebrations, February 4-9. • Santa Clara Kaiser posted CPAN and CAPA questions to win movie tickets and prizes, reported John Kuykendall. • Memorial Medical Center, Modesto, celebrated with lunch on Tuesday and Thursday. Along with pita sandwiches, chips, and drinks, Managers Jo Ann Adkins and K a t h l e e n Tu c k sent a letter of appreciation. • Kaiser Permanente, Anaheim saw Tita Invina promoting ASPAN and Certification during their staff potluck. • Redlands Memorial Hospital posted the PANAW poster in J a n u a r y. S t e v e n Potjer said the staff had a Breakfast Burrito Bar on Friday that included a farewell for their colleague, Deborah Cole. • R a d y C h i l d r e n’s Hospital, San Diego, began their week with Ventura nurses, Bessie Duarte and Merci a breakfast sponsored Buhain, with their PANAW Bags. by friends in Surgery. The PACU Leadership team treated the PACU to In-N-Out burgers—so much fun, reported Linda Sparks. Human Resources also signed a poster of appreciation for fulfilling the hospital’s mission. • Valley Care Medical Center ASC received PANAW tote bags, badge holders, and a PANAW cake, too, added Patty Stowers. • UC San Diego management team provided lunch for PANAW, noted Edna Culp. • Children’s Hospital Central California put up PANAW banners, celebrated with nachos one afternoon, and treated to lunch by an anesthesiologist. Denise DeFendis said they ended the week with sweets on Friday. • Santa Monica-UCLA gave gas cards to certified nurses and provided pastries for their perianesthesia department nurses. How did you celebrate Perianesthesia Nurse Awareness Week? Share your PANAW experience and plans for next year with Pulseline at enunesca@aol.com. Over 200 nurses attended the February Burbank Conference to hear Linda Callahan, PhD, CRNA, PMHNP share practice information on pain management, herbals, and the effect of genomes on our patient care. Here are some of the pearls I came away with: • Did you ever wonder why so many of the pain patients have issues with depression and anxiety? The receptors are the same for all three. • In the next 10-20 years genetic testing will be more affordable. Genetic test results will aid the physician in determining which drugs and doses work best for an individual. What does this mean? 1. Some people are genetically unable to utilize some drugs like Morphine or Codeine for pain relief and physicians would know which drugs to prescribe. 2. Heparin dosage will be determined without trial and error. 3. In pre-op, we will know for certain who is at genetic risk for Malignant Hyperthermia or has a pseudocholinesterase deficiency. • Approximately 40% of elderly patients suffer some postoperative delirium in the year following surgery. Keeping their SpO2 >90% (which is a PaO2 of 60%) may help prevent delirium. Avoid giving Benadryl to this population due to its strong anticholinergic effects and high risk for delirium. A low HCT is also a risk factor for delirium. • Xanax 0.5 mg is equigesic to 5 mg of Valium. Someone taking 3 Xanax a day may need more than 2 mg of Versed in OR to avoid risk of withdrawal. • Remember dose equivalents: Demerol 150 mg is equal to Morphine 15 mg. Dilaudid is 6 or 7 times stronger than Morphine Fentanyl (measured in mcg, not mg) is 100 times stronger than Morphine and lasts up to 2 times longer in cold patients. • Postoperatively, patients with untreated proximal DVT have a 50% chance of symptomatic Pulmonary Embolus within 3 months (with 10% death rate). • Humans are genetically 99.8 % identical. Sorry. Education specific to our specialty is not only exciting, it helps us give the best care to our patients and empowers you to advocate for them with the physicians. Come join me in Sacramento for PANAC’s next conference, October 25-26! Governmental Affairs Report: Proposed Bill Cuts Costs, Time for Degree By Beverly Edwardsen, BHS, RN, CPN, PANAC GA Chair California Assemblyman Dan Logue introduced AB 51 that creates a program that allows high school students to obtain a Baccalaureate degree within 18 months at a cost of $10,000 including text books. The program would be a joint effort that starts in high school and continues through to California State University. Students enrolled in the program would earn an unlimited number of advance placement courses in high school, be required to maintain their grade point average, and meet time requirements at a community college and the University. Participating California State Universities would be required to give priority placement and expedite the progress of participating students by accepting a minimum of 60 units earned in High School and at Community College. The emphasis on the proposed program is to promote science and technology degrees, including nursing. Hope to see you there or at our next Chapter meeting. Lisa Dellone congratulates Kevin Reilly on certification Fresno Nurse New CPAN By Lisa Dellone, BSN, RN, CPAN Kevin Reilly, BSN, RN, CPAN is one of three new CPANs at Community Regional Medical Center, Fresno, CA. Kevin, Sho Singh and Rowena Polache passed their CPAN exams in Fall 2012, giving CRMC a total of 11 CPANs. Our other CPANs are Chris McKinney, Maggie Herrera, Ann Ginsberg, Richard Wigginton, Redena Cheung-Mah, Lorinda Flores, Summer Durham, and me, Lisa Dellone. In 2007, Kevin was an RN student at Fresno State University when he started at CRMC as an OR extern and learned to scrub, circulate and transport. But in his 5th semester, decided he wanted more patient contact and considered PACU. He was told it was impossible for a new grad because “they only hire experienced critical care RNs.” One day, in the hall, I asked him if he’d ever thought about working in the PACU. That was all he needed to hear. With the OR supervisor’s approval, Kevin transferred to PACU and in his last semester, worked alongside PACU RNs. After graduating in May 2009, he attended the Central California Critical Care Consortium before spending a month in the Trauma ICU orienting with an ICU RN. CRMC is a Level 1 Trauma Center for Central California that has 2 PACUs. One PACU recovers patients of private physicians and the other, Trauma Center PACU, recovers patients of academic surgeons who operate on ICU and trauma cases while teaching interns and residents from UC San Francisco. As a Staff III nurse, Kevin functions well in both PACUs with all types of patients. He also acts as charge nurse, precepts new RNs, and teaches modules (like the massive transfusion protocol and the Level I) at the annual competency fair and inservices. An avid surfer in his mid-40s, Kevin is a single father with a young son. Having previously worked as a printer, “before computers took over the printing world,” he brings a lot of life experiences to nursing. Last year he traveled with a CRNA to speak at an anesthesia conference on The Post Anesthesia Care of Awake Craniotomy Patients. He always has a smile, is energetic, and enthusiastic about learning. He describes himself as being very OCD, now he can add CPAN. District 2 Kevin MacVane, BSN, RN, CAPA macvak33@aol.com The counties of: Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Congratulations on the great turnout for PANAC’s February Seminar in Burbank. District 2 was well represented! Snow hit the Grapevine that weekend, along with most of the country, canceling my flight to Maine to be with my mom before surgery. I forget what it’s like on the East Coast with snow. I finally made it, and my mom is doing well. March 9, the LA Chapter hosted their 2nd Mini-Seminar featuring Thoracic Surgery, Sleep Apnea and ASPAN Guidelines, PONV and ABG’s and Ventilators presented by Thoracic Surgeon, Raymond Schaerf, MD, Pulmonologists, Shilesh Patel, MD and Wayneinder Anand, MD, and Anesthesiologist, Laurence Lang, MD. It was great.
