Volume 1 Number 1 Poetry, Arts, and Gardens May 2016 Partners in our community Snake~Nation~Press Has a New Mission W hat would you do if you couldn’t read? You really don’t know, but you do know it won’t be the best. What kind of jobs are available to non-readers? Would you be able to read street signs, maps, or directions on the backs of food cans or medicines? Readers never think of the difficulties faced by people unable to read. You probably learned to read so long ago that it almost seems like your were born reading. But looking back, you know that’s not true. You still can remember the alphabet song and those stumbling efforts with your Snake Nation Press joins with the 2016 South Georgia mother or a sister or a teacher helping you sound out the words in your first book. Snake Nation Press joins with the 2016 Roberta George South Georgia Literacy Festival in bringing writers to south Georgia and raising awareness and money for literacy projects. With over 25 Founding Editor years of reading, writing, and publication, Snake Nation Press is working hard to bring a Media Center to Lowndes County. The Queen Anne building on the corner of 110 West Force Street is the perfect location, another focal point of learning, which includes the Turner Center for the Arts, the Crescent, and Valdosta State University. Valdosta is a city that helps its people reach their full potential. The Center would provide a comfortable environment for people to develop their creative skills, which usual means having the basic tools of reading and writing. Resources at the Center will include: meeting rooms for literacy training and private tutoring, a book arts and letterpress studio, digital media tools (scanners, Adobe Design Suite, printers), a sound studio, a writing library, WIFI, a garden and kitchen. Snake Nation Press has recently been awarded a low-power FM license through the FCC. Readings, workshops, and educational opportunities will be available to the public. 2016 South Georgia Literacy Festival Schedule of Activities Friday, May 13, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – A writers’ workshop, conducted by featured authors, will take place in Gazebo II directly across the hall from the Garden Suite. In our modern world, we are inundated with the visual aspects of art - photographs, videos, on screens and in books. We also have a multitude of sounds, the spoken word and music are of great interest as we launch WSNK in the near future. This is an awesome opportunity and challenge to our meager volunteer staff so we must rely on the public, our neighbors, and friends to help construct the content of both this paper and the radio station. Our goal is to partner with existing non-profit agencies to give them greater public exposure and support. We are excited to find talented musicians and poets, storytellers and advocates. It is not our intention to present a narrow viewpoint on issues of local controversy whether it be a bio-mass plant, gas pipeline, or school choice. Our goal will be to educate ourselves, our readers, and our listeners on local topics. The concept of the virtual and physical “polis” is to give a place to speak and write, building sense of community and connection with our neighbors. est stated in a quote from President John F. Kennedy in his Address before the American Newspaper Publishers Association April 27, 1961.1 A B “Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed and no our choices, to lead, mold, educate, and sometimes even anger public opinion.” We will strive to keep our neighbors informed of the actions of local government, Valdosta City and Lowndes County and Georgia State Government commissions and special districts. This is our mission, as part of our licensing we are tasked by the FCC to be an eductional station, we are not permitted to advertise, we may only have underwriters. We cannot promote or endorse candidates, ballot initiatives or political parties. However, we will assist in exploring political issues in depth and invite local politicians and activists to speak on air and in print about the issues of local importance. he Beacon will act as the print version of the radio content. The name was chosen for two reasons: first, the signal beacon to warn or alert the listeners. In this regard we are mandated to install an Emergency Alert System (EAS) to gain licensure. The station can be invaluable in a natural disaster when other forms of media have been lost. In the metaphorical sense the Beacon will be a direction finder for our city and neighborhoods. Of course this cannot be done in isolation, we will need your help in providing engineering, writing, producing, and presenting our version of Valdosta and Lowndes County. We ask for your support and assistance in this new endeavour. T John F. Kennedy SpeechesThe President and the Press: Address before the American Newspaper Publishers Association, April 27, 1961 1 http://www.jfklibrary.org/Research/Research-Aids/JFK-Speeches/ American-Newspaper-Publishers-Association_19610427.aspx The Sister Arts Victorian Inspiration for Our Time by Stephanie Stambaugh “The Sister Arts” is the Victorian phrase used to describe the interrelationship of various art forms, though the idea is not limited to that era, and the phrase is most often associated with the relationship between the two arts of painting and poetry. The phrase can also encompass the inspiration gained through experiencing any of the arts, such as poetry, fiction, painting, theatre, music, etc., and that art’s effect or influence on an artist’s work as they are in the throes of the creative process.” “The Sister Arts” ultimately describe the creative process that connects each of the arts through the birth of new ideas, techniques, and movements from a common source, like sisters sharing common parents. Artists, whether they be writers or painters, can find inspiration from a common source or message within another art form, such as a poem’s effect on the composition and theme of a painter’s mural. The name “Sister” can also stem from the origin of new ideas at the moment of sharing or experiencing art works, and so the relationship of creating art is connected to the female ability to give birth, thus giving the term its feminine reference. from: https://thesisterarts.wordpress.com/what-are-the-sister-arts/ If you would like to become a member, please do so by filling out this form. May 2016 / S~N~P Beacon In Tribute May 2016 / S~N~P Beacon 4 Advocating literacy Defining circumstances T he 2016 South Georgia Literacy Festival was born out of a desire to share with others what I have learned and experienced since delving into writing and self-publishing my Circumstances Series (Insane Circumstances, Unforeseen Circumstances, and Extreme Circumstances). After attending several events in California, Texas, and Louisiana which allowed Indie authors like me to share our works with a wider audience, my husband Jerry and I decided to stay home in 2016 and have a community-wide festival in Valdosta. We had met some awesome people, made lifelong friends, and attended writers’ workshops conducted by several nationally renowned writers—experiences that keep me encouraged and telling my stories. Both of us thought that other area writers would dust off some of the many boxes in the backs of their closets and immerse themselves anew in a culture that encourages reading, writing, and sharing their musings with others, if we shared what we have learned. Consequently we decided to host a Literacy Festival! When the idea was presented to one of our partners, she said, “Literary Festival,” a notion I rejected. When encouraged to talk more about what I meant by that, I told a supporter, “Being literate is more than just being able to read. Being literate is being able to write, and speak. It is using that state “literacy” to help skills, crafts, and works one is acquiring, be articulated and used to support oneself. For example, a seamstress could serve as a partic- ing with hundreds of people from our area. By March 2015, a host committee was formed. Since then the 2016 South Georgia Literacy Festival Committee has partnered with a local non-profit, Snake Nation Press to carry out the vision. Together, we wrote and received a Georgia Vibrant Communities Grant to help defray the expenses of the Festival. Because of the group’s efforts, Valdosta will become a more literate community. Authors will be encouraged. Nationally renowned authors will share their compelling stories with workshop participants, and give tips and strategies for writing and publishing. Children who come to the Festival with their parents will receive FREE books as long as they last, and winners of a contest for high school students will receive prizes. A local library will also receive a collection of books and a generous donation. “Literary” implies authors only. A former television and radio news reporter, ReShonda is a professional editor, ghost writer, and literary consultant. She has worked as a reporter for The National Enquirer and as an anchor and reporter for NBC, ABC, and FOX television stations in Texas . ReShonda is the national best selling author of 35 books. V i c t o r i a C hr i s t o p he r Mur ray Victoria Christopher Murray always knew she would become an author, even as she was taking an unlikely path to that destination. A native of Queens, Victoria first left New York to attend Hampton University where she majored in Communication Disorders. After graduating, Victoria attended New York University where she received her MBA. Victoria spent ten years in Corporate America before she tested her entrepreneurial spirit. She opened a Financial Services Agency for Aegon, USA, where she managed the number one division for nine years. However, Victoria never lost the dream to write and when the “bug” hit her again in 1997, she answered the call. Victoria originally self-published her first novel, Temptation and in 2000, Time Warner published that novel. Temptation made numerous best sellers lists and remained on the Essence bestsellers list for nine consecutive months. In 2001, Temptation was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in Outstanding Literature. Since Temptation, Victoria has written over twenty adult novels, including: JOY, Grown Folks Business, The Ex Files, and The Deal, the Dance and the Devil, and the popular Jasmine Cox Larson Bush series. In 2012, Victoria joined ReShonda Tate Billingsley to write collaborations, which pits Victoria’s Jasmine character against Rachel Adams, a first lady created by ReShonda. Victoria has received numerous awards, including the Golden Pen Award for Best Inspirational Fiction and the Phyllis Wheatley Trailblazer Award for being a pioneer in African American Fiction. Since 2007, Victoria has won six African American Literary Awards for best novel, best Christian fiction and Author of the Year - Female. Her 2014 NAACP Image Award nomination for Never Say Never was her third Image Award nomination. With over one million books in print, Victoria is one of the country’s top African American contemporary authors. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Jacob M. Appel Jacob M. Appel’s most recent works include a novel, The Biology of Luck, and an essay collection, Phoning Home. The stories in The Magic Laundry stem from his work as a psychiatrist in New York City, and his particular interest in how ordinary people cope with extraordinary challenges. He hopes these stories will encourage his readers to place themselves in the shoes of his protagonists and to ask themselves how they would handle the tribulations confronted by his characters. What would you do if your daughter returned home from college with a stolen baboon? Or if you operated a laundromat and the washing machines gained a reputation for performing minor miracles? In the course of practicing medicine, Dr. Appel has observed that the most extraordinary things do happen to ordinary people, every day, in every city and town, often drawing little public notice. Yet few events are more extraordinary than the publication of a book—especially a collection of short stories. A strikingly ordinary person himself, Dr. Appel looks forward to both his own reaction and yours. His book tells the story of the establishment and expansion of the first black congregation of the Church of Christ in the state of Georgia. Set in the middle of the Great Depression in the small rural town of Valdosta, Georgia, the author uncovers an extraordinary story of unparalleled achievement. The book describes the bitter irony that black preachers had to face as they implored their brothers and sisters to crown Jesus Christ Lord of their lives while living in a region of the country where Jim Crow was king. A local pastor, he shows his love for history in this book, which can be obtained at Xlibris.com or by contacting him. Chris L. Wright Poet Chris L. Wright was raised in the Peach State of Georgia. A third generation collision technician and painter, he is one talented young man. Known to many as “Chicken,” Chris has a never-ending and insatiable appetite for creativity that runs as deep as his love for southern fried chicken. Author of Chicken and Rise and Breathless Chemistry, he is a vigilant poet that thrives to paint the melodic, “We Will Overcome” Afro spirit of relentlessness. He writes emotional and provocative poetry that sears through the skin to the soul. His most renown poems are “After the Rain” and “To My Greatest Fan.” Both are tributes to his grandmas in which he says his final goodbyes to the great women who kept him grounded in an unceasing faith to do whatever you can dream. Phillip Berrian Testimonial of One’s True Greatness is a compilation of poems and short stories, which illustrate and discuss the following themes: love, loss, hope, triumph, redemption, and restoration, etc. The award-winning author shares, with his heart, some of the struggles he has faced, and he encourages others. He resides in Valdosta, Georgia. He participated in several online poetry contests and received awards in 2005, 2007, and 2012. He was recognized by Famous Poets Society for a poem titled “A MAN.” In August of 2011, he was also featured on two online poetry blog/websites: poetrycrazy.com and voices.net.com. It is available in eBook and hardcover. You can find it on Amazon and at Infinity Publishing on www.buybooksontheweb.com, Roberta George Baptizing the Cat, her third completed novel is a psychological study, which is both serious and comic, a trip with the subtleties of evil and their consequences. It tells the story of Phillip Craine, a disgruntled artist who lives in Florida with his family, and passes himself off as a CIA agent, which gives him the freedom to come and go as he pleases. A view of a woman on the beach sends him out to purchase equipment to spy on her, yet he maintains a semblance of faithfulness to his overweight, wealthy wife who passively controls him. Although Phillip is not a sympathetic or heroic character, he is believable, an interesting talented man. Boredom leads this classic outsider to the verge of doing the unthinkable. Roberta George is the founding editor of Snake Nation Press, which was named as one of the five Best Small Lit Presses in the nation by Writers Digest for over five years. She served as the Executive Director for the Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Center for 12 years and has had stories and poems published in many small literary publications. Book Clubs Circle of Friends Book Club Circle of Friends Book Club I was founded in 1994 by Jennifer Copeland and a few of her friends in Valdosta, Georgia. The purpose of the club was initially just for the group to read books and meet once a month to discuss the book. The Book Club to date has been quite successful in that it does other activities to promote literacy. There are currently 14 Chapters of COF in various states. Because there is a need in today’s society for “sistahs” to reach out to each other in sharing and in fellowship, Shunda Blocker decided to continue the legacy of Circle of Friends by forming an Atlanta chapter called “Circle of Friends Book Club II.” Their first meeting was held in January 1997. The membership continues to grow each year. In September 1997 COF II was chosen as one of the guest book clubs and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show to celebrate Oprah’s Book Club’s first year anniversary.(This chapter changed their name to Worthy To Be Praised in honor of her mother) The legacy of Circle of Friends continues and several chapters have been formed in the Southeast and North Carolina area. COF III is located in Tallahassee, Florida, and is being led by Mrs. Lisa Mitchell. Their first meeting was held December 1997, and they are continuing to grow. COF IV is in Jacksonville, North Carolina and their president is Tiffany Clayton. COF V, is the Gwinnett /Gainesville Chapter and their president is Ms. Carol Brooks. (229)247-2613 or email simplyanna50@gmail.com Capital Campaign Building an enduring legacy 13 S nake Nation Press began as a half-baked idea in 1987 at Breadloaf, the granddaddy of all writers’ conferences, in Middlebury, Vermont. A group of Georgia, Alabama, and Florida writers, myself included, found ourselves relegated to The Barn, the hang-out for the unpublished (might as well say un-washed) writers, who were attending the conference. On the last day of the conference, the Barn people were inconsolable. We’d had a great experience, won some recognition for ourselves, and now it was time to leave. “I wish I had a literary magazine and could publish all of you,” I said, trying, in some way, to hold on to what we’d accomplished. “A splendid idea,” another person volunteered. “What would you call it?” someone else asked. “The Barn,” another suggested. According to legend, after a particularly boisterous night, the sheriff raided a local club and took everyone back to the hoosegow. As with many buildings in those days, the jail was just a wooden frame set on top of a dirt floor. When the sheriff departed, the Snake Nation bunch lifted the entire structure off its foundations and walked away. I’ll call it Snake Nation Review,” I said, explaining my reasons for wanting the name. “Aren’t writers the lowest of all artists, especially unpublished writers, thousands of hours on work that no one ever sees, never gets paid for, the underbelly of the artistic world.” I went back to school at Florida State University and talked about starting a literary magazine in my hometown of Valdosta, Georgia. Jerome Stern, Head of the Creative Writing Department, now deceased, encouraged this insanity. “Why not?” he said, “Tallahassee has four.” My friends Sandra Saunders, Cynthia Everett, and Heather Sellers acted as if the first issues were already in the racks. They volunteered to serve as editors. After that, many editors and readers came and went: Janice Daugherty, now a wellknown Southern writer, along with Professor Pat Miller of Valdosta State, served long, hard hours. During that time, Snake Nation published many famous and many more unknown writers. Later my father, Robert Haas, and a sister, Nancy Phillips, were the main stays of what had become Snake Nation Press. In 1994 and 1998, Snake Nation Review was named one of the Fifty Best Small Lit Magazines in the nation by Writers’ Digest. Now, some twenty years later, it’s hard to see what kept the magazine going. There was never enough time or money. In ’98, Nancy moved to California. In ’99, my father died, and with that blow, I felt the Snake was breathing its last too. The work at the Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Center was growing exponentially, and the Press was again nominated for the Fifty Best, but I didn’t send in the paper work. I was out of time and energy. Then in May 2001, Jean Arambula, after a long pilgrimage to Colorado Springs, came back to Valdosta. She had worked on the ’95 award winning Snake issue and now wanted to start up a publication, The Valdosta Voice, a newspaper to cover cultural events in Lowndes County. When Well, there’s a great deal of difference between saying what you’ll do and the doing. she found that no Review had been published in ‘99, she was outraged, declared: “The Snake cannot die”. I told her I felt like the Fat Broad of the B.C. comic strip beating the Snake with a club yet never quite able to kill it off. Truly, Jean, with her invincible heart, coming back was a sign, an omen; what I wanted and needed to hear. Since then, the Snake has gone through many reincarnations, shedding its skin and reinventing itself. The latest iteration is now emerging with the radio station and media center projects. In our digital world dominated by electronic devices like smart phones and tablets the need for the printed page and radio waves may seem archaic. We think this is untrue. We believe that Valdosta can grow and thrive through efforts to communicate at the neighborhood level where we can have the greatest influence. That is why the creation of the media center is important. First, to create a modern blend of physical and digital space. Secondly, provide for spaces to allow the growth of literacy in our citizens. In the early 21st century the ability to survive and thrive requires the use of digital devices and understanding language. Third, to explore the variations of cultures that surround us in today’s virtually borderless world, while embracing the unique qualities of life that define South Georgia, especially Valdosta. We can’t accomplish our goals in isolation and welcome individuals, non-profits and government agencies to join us. We want to eliminate the voids of information that cause misunderstanding between ourselves and our government. These are lofty goals, indeed, but we a confident that the dividends will be paid in greater trust in our fellow Denizens of the Deep South. Watch a beloved college football team whilst sipping on Mich Ultras. Eating boiled peanuts chased with swigs of a frosty Natty. Watching the slowly disappearing summer sun over swampy vistas with Bud Light Limes in camo coozies. And while mass produced swill has its time and place (I, myself, am partial to a cold Coors after mowing the lawn), that era is dead and gone. Better late than never, Valdosta is undergoing a sort of craft beer revolution. Where once, we were forced to select limited options of the tasteless Big Boys, or, if we were lucky, a couple craft standbys (Sweetwater 420, anyone?), now most restaurants and liquor purveyors are peddling a fantastic amount of hand crafted options. I am thankful for it. The extra expense is worth the quality…and supporting the hardworking folks manning the kettles, fermenters, and bottling lines. Liquor stores in the area have been doing a fantastic job keeping craft standards in stock while attempting to deliver some of those limited bottles beer nerds fuss and fight over. The variety is dizzying. Just this last week, I was required to choose between a Vanilla Stout, a Pumpkin Lambic, a Tangerine IPA, and a Barrel-Aged Sour. Decisions, decisions. Five Points is leading the way, but The Warehouse, Exit 18, and Holiday Spirits are all flexing some craft beer muscle. Adding to the beer intrigue is the mind-blowing fact that Hotdosta is sporting not one, but TWO growler shops. Growlers are God’s gift to beer drinkers in that we can take kegged beer home by the gallon. Craft on Draft does a damn fine job sporting home state selections by being perpetually well stocked with locally brewed rarities for your consumption pleasure. Last week, I grabbed growlers full of Burnt Hickory (Kennesaw) Red Velvet Cake beer and a double IPA from Three Taverns (Decatur). But what if drinking at home ain’t your bag, you social butterfly you? Fear not, a growing number of restaurants and taverns are stocking coolers and filling taps with sudsy delights. Bleu Cafe, Bleu Pub, Ashley Street Station, The Tipsy Cow, and Mellow Mushroom are all sporting respectable lineups via need to unlock the zymurgy mysteries for yourself. You need to brew your own, create the perfect personal beer. Fret not, the Azalea City has you covered. VORLAUF (the Valdosta Order of Real Lagers, Ales, and Unique Fermentables - helluva an acronym, huh?) is the local homebrew club that can support your DIY brewing dreams. Novices to brewmasters can get advice, learn about hop varieties, share recipes, go on brewery field trips, and sample hand crafted deliciousness at monthly meetings and special events. Check out the VORLAUF Facebook page for details. Perhaps most exciting is that Valdosta may have their very own brewery in the near future. The Georgia Beer Company is planning to set up shop in glorious historic downtown Valdosta complete with full service taproom and large scale production facility. It would be the centerpiece of Valdosta beer culture to have a real live hometown brewery pumping fresh delicious beer to true South Georgians. No opening day is set, but we are ready! Okay, we ain’t Ashevillle or Portland or Denver...but the State of our Beer Union is strong! There is no excuse for not finding excellent craft beer in V-Town anymore. Get out there and taste the town, Valdosta. “Growlers are God’s gift to beer drinkers in that we can take beer home by the gallon...” bottle and tap to complement your culinary desires. Grab a can while watching a movie at the downtown Cinema. Hit the Steel Magnolias rooftop bar for a pint. Brew and brunch at Friends Grille and Bar. Or a cigar and snifter at Stogies. Steak and an Omaha Brewing beer at Austin’s. Good beer wherever you turn. Maybe drinking ain’t enough though. You’re done waiting on the sidelines. MGEVs want to give our youth the ability to learn rst-hand the source of their food by creating vegetable gardens and fruit orchards at all Valdosta city schools. Early vegetable garden work included the Pinevale Learning Center Garden project, the reclamation of an abandoned garden (170’X76’) requested by the Valdosta City School SuperAnnie Barbas, Joshua Dawson, and students preparintendent. The gar- ing a bed for an herb garden den was subsidized by a Lowe’s Tool- box for Education Grant, a grant from the Georgia Master Gardener Association, and the generous support of sev- South Georgia Growing Local eral businesses, FVSU and UGA Extension in Lowndes County, and a cadre of MGEVs. The garden was an outreach to Pinevale, an alternative school for students referred because of academic, social, or judicial reasons. MGEVs gave presentations on landscape design, water and energy management, and the introduction of low-maintenance ornamentals and fruit-bearing trees. Students participated in transplanting the existing shrubs and trees and planting of new ones. Attention was given to the selection of easily maintained trees so that students could replicate the choices at home. Students were able to propagate some selections to take home. A vegetable and herb garden was added later, and students participated in installing a drip irrigation system, planting, and harvesting. MGEVs in Lowndes County has expanded the project from the Pinevale site to seven schools in Valdosta and works closely with teachers in the development of gardens and orchards. In acknowledgement of this hard work, MGEVs have been recognized for their efforts with the Community Service/ Humanitarian Award given by Farm Home Ministries. Also, I was recognized as “Woman of the Year” for my leadership of the project. MGEVs note that, as a result of this project, more and more youth are becoming interested in agriculture. The local community understands the importance of this project’s goal to educate youth about agriculture and has generously supported the orchards and gardens Contributed by Charlie Barnes IV South Georgia Growing Local is an idea that is starting to take shape and mature in our local community. The foundation of the organization began from Gretchen Quarterman’s South Georgia Growing Local Conference that has taken place for the past few years in the Lowndes County Community. It is really about education more than anything. How can we better educate the community to grow, procure, and prepare food locally? The Conference has been a great success, and has helped to network a core group of farmers, producers, and consumers in the community that are passionate about local innovative food systems, and looking to take our community to the next level. I personally promote what we are trying to accomplish as a community service organization. Anyone interested can get involved. We are looking for people that have ideas they want to put into motion and get involved to enhance the growing local food movement in Valdosta/Lowndes County Area. We had our first meeting in March where we decided to break up into three project groups: distribution, raised bed gardens, and education. Each group is tasked to take on a project in the community in the spirit of their shared goal. We are planning to meet every other month to get updates on the various ongoing projects and further share ideas as the group evolves. We will be presenting the completion of the first round of projects in November. From there, we will work improving the attendance of the South Georgia Growing Local Conference in January. We hope to continue to attract new members and bring more energy to the table. What we are starting can be nothing but a positive investment in the community. Food is something that has a connection to everyone, and for so many reasons plays a pivotal role in who we really are. William S. West in 1898. He built the neoclassical, crescent-shaped front porch, 23room home for his family. The Crescent is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1951, three ladies in the Garden Club saved the demolition of the West’s former home, and it became the home of all the Garden Clubs in Valdosta.
