It is the essence of principle-centered parenting. It catalyzes, unifies, and unleashes the greatest power within people. What is synergy? Simply defined, it means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The essence of synergy is to value differences-to respect them, to build on strength, to compensate for weakness. Synergy is almost as if a group collectively agrees to subordinate old script and to write a new one. Value the difference in the essence of synergy-the mental, the emotional, the psychological difference between people. And the key to valuing those differences is to realize that all people see the world, not as it is, but as they are. The person who is truly effective has the humility and reverence to recognize his own perpetual limitations and to appreciate the rich resources available through interaction with the hearts and minds of other human beings. Synergy works it’s a correct principle. It is the crowning achievement of all previous habits. It is effectiveness in an interdependent reality-it is teamwork, team building, the development of unity and creativity with other human beings. Synergy is collectively working together but at the same time each party maintains their own identity. There should be more positive synergy in the body of Christ. It doesn’t matter what assignment God gives each of us we are all placed in an interdependent position. If you are a gospel announcer brokering your time you are looking for sponsors and advertisiers to help pay for your time. If you are a gospel artists you are interdependent on the gospel announcers to play your music. We live in a world of SNERGY, God has given each of us a dream. It is up to us to put the correct pieces of the puzzle together that will make our dream and vision a reality. Bottomline we live in an interdependent world, in order to move to the next level we have to position ourselves to maximize on our positive synergy. God Bless! Page 3 The Internet! I am spending more time on the Internet because this is the future, now! Contrary to how some people may feel about the Internet we are moving closer to the day when everything we do will be done online. I am constantly online researching and viewing different sites, listening to various Internet Radio Stations from around the world as well as staying on top of everything that I have on my plate. It’s so exciting to see all of the new gospel artists sites as well as the churches who have website. I recall attending a GMWA meeting five or six years ago and hearing the prediction how Internet was going to have a great impact on all genre’s of music. Times are changing and has been for some time and here it is 2006 and we are now beginning to see the bigger picture. There are many great sites in cyber space that has a lot to offer but because of our limited knowledge of the e-commerce business most of us still us the Internet to stay in touch with our friends and associates. Which is a good thing to pass along devotionals, jokes, chain letters, and other cute messages. But the one thing that has been over looked and is now beginning to take form is conducting business on line. Many of us have to over come the fear of identity thief and step out of our comfort zones and be a blessing to the many independent gospel artists whose music in now available online. With the current cost of gas at the pumps today many people are really making a choices because it not possible to attend events as it was a few years ago or should I say a few month ago. Let me get to the point as I see the Internet. According to the Independent Online Distribution Alliance CDs are going to become obsolete by the year 2008. A lot of independent gospel artists and many labels will be affected when this happens. The trend that I see taking place on the Internet certain groups of people are placing themselves in position now to take advantage of what is happening now. So that as the change continues to take form they will be on the ground floor to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity. What I have done is three things in the change that is taking place. One we have converted the magazine to an online publication where we are offering an affiliate program to allow everyone who signs up for a subscription to be able to generate an extra stream of income. As I have been watching what is taking place on the Internet. Gone are the days of simply exchanging links and hello to the days of affiliate programs so that everyone can generate an extra stream of income through the link exchange. Gospel Synergy Magazine is right on target with the change. Two Gospel Synergy Magazine launched the Gospel Swap a unique online distribution service for independent gospel artists. The Gospel Swap offers all categories of gospel music for a one time minimal set up fee, independent gospel artists can sell their music online and be compensated for each time a song is download. This is where its headed and I believe that every artists should understand that even though they may have their own website online distribution is the same as brick and mortar the more places you make you music available the better your chances are of getting a sale. Page 4 They said it wouldn’t work but that was small minded people who lacked vision or they were not convinced that Internet radio would work. Well, it has, independent artist now have a better chance to be heard not just in a local market but world wide. We are now in a positin to offer independent gospel artists air play as the final link to our triology. We feel that it will only be a matter of time. We have also linked up with at least 20 Internet stations nationwide to form an online syndication that will be a blessing over time. That is once we all realize that we can break artists and be responsible for creating the next gospel sensation. Yes you heard it right! We have the ability to create the next gospel super star by joining forces and not look at each other as a competitor. To me this is an everyday job its not something that I do after I leave my nine to five. This is what I live breathe and do from the time I rise each day. This has been my lifestyle for the past ten years. I would hope that every subscriber, as you read this article that you are looking at the bigger picture and realize that its not about me but instead its about us. There are too many of us struggling everyday to make ends meet our collective effort will allow each of us to realize our dream as we persue our destiny. A N D R E L C A R T E R we are not confined to a specific genre. We’ll go from being on the Edna Sims... phone pitching hip-hop artists, then Portion of Interview by Manhunt.com we’ll turn around and start pitching Manhunt: How long have you been do- for Crenshaw Christian Center, which is Dr. Fredrick Price, another one of ing public relations? our clients. on that. So it’s fun, it’s just straight up fun. Edna: I’ve been doing PR for fifteen years or so. Edna: There’s not. And because of the different genres that are out, you know the rappers, we don’t even change our vocabulary for them. We keep it straight; we just keep it business. So I don’t have to, lets say, go down to there level or anything, they like the professionalism that we give versus saying, “Hey ya’ll” and all that. We don’t have to talk in that slang. They like it, as a matter of fact, they prefer for you to handle your business as they would say, then to try to be buddy buddy or friends with them or anything. And of course when your talking to the press you have to be intelligent and speak clearly as to whom you are representing and what is it that you want. ESP - Public Relations Manhunt: Fifteen years, did you start of independently or did you start off with a record label? Edna: I started independently, with a passion. When I started I had another business I was doing sports camps for professional basketball and football players. Manhunt: OK. Edna: At that time I was basically working with the Lakers camp. That was during the time they were doing all of that winning. I was getting a lot of calls from different TV shows and magazines for either Magic Johnson or one of my other players, I would tell them to call the Forums publicist but they would tell me they couldn’t get through. So I started doing a lot of the booking of the basketball players for television shows, magazine interviews and commercials. So when I went to start my next business, which was PR, it was just natural. It just flowed because I was doing a lot of talking and working with the press. Manhunt: That is very exciting. Now, you are obviously still an independent publicist. What artists do you currently work with? Edna: Oh gosh. Kathy Hughes, Radio One, Witness, Frieda Battle, Shekinah Glory Ministries. We don’t just do gospel public relations. That’s the unique thing about our company; Manhunt: Right. It must be difficult dealing with such different markets. Since the markets are different I would guess that the way you do public relations for them must be different. How do you switch gears when doing publicity for such diverse markets at the same time? Do you have a different approach? Edna: No not at all. A pitch is a pitch, whether you’re pitching a gospel artist or if you’re pitching David Talbert, who is a playwright that we’re are working right now. Or let’s say when we switching over and doing The Realest or Twista, the pitch is the same. It’s the genre, or the magazine, or the media outlet, which is different. And of course that all has to be communicated, but we don’t have a problem with doing that because my firm started with doing professional athletes, which then went on into hip-hop and rap. And as the years went on and I being a Christian, I prayed and asked for clients in the gospel music industry, because I wanted to share what I had in the gospel industry. So that’s how that happened, so actually it’s very refreshing and it kind of keeps your day moving because your doing all different varieties of pitching for different clients. Then we have the Ford Motor Company, we do some corporate stuff, we have Chrysler, so we could be pitching that one hour and then the next hour we’ll go on and begin to talk about Dr. Fredrick Price purchasing a church in New York City and start to get interviews Page 5 Manhunt: Well I was going to say that it sounds like there is never a dull moment with what you do. As Label Manager for Sanctuary Records Groups’ Reggae and Catalog http://www.light-street.com Page 6 Using New Technologies for More Effective Ministry The first church I attended with regularity had no public address system. There was a single crystal microphone on the pulpit, but the signal it produced went only to a small tube-type amplifier and a single speaker in the church nursery. The sanctuary had hardwood surfaces and glass that set up standing waves that resonated with the speaker’s voice. Since there was no photocopier in the church office, carefully typed wax masters of lessons and handouts were prepared for duplicating on an aging Gestetner. The copies came out inky and stinky and were inconsistent in quality. Our little West Virginia church had no air conditioning. A few fans and open windows were the primary means of summertime cooling. The noise of trucks and cars rambling down the nearby twolane road came through the open windows. Today’s churchgoers wouldn’t think of putting up with some of the impositions and discomforts former generations experienced. We expect more creature comforts and modern-day conveniences; and those expectations will continue to rise as our society appropriates even more innovations. Take audio systems, for example. In general, audiences in all venues no longer want to strain to hear a speaker. They are accustomed to amplified sound and higher volume levels because of high quality sound systems in their homes and cars and even in their portable electronic devices. Ministries are expected to meet the same standards.Fifty years ago mimeograph machines output copies in purple ink. Today laser printers render coloraccented materials for very little additional cost. We use personal computers to produce church bulletins, small booklets, and promotional materials in just the quantity needed. Using a laptop computer and presentation software, such as Keynote or PowerPoint, speakers can employ eye- popping visuals that rivet the attention of the audience. Some of the more sophisticated PDAs (personal digital assistants) can even replace the laptop and feed the presentation to a video projector through a wireless interface. When planning our new sanctuary, it was recommended that a 28-foot media platform be built above the rear sanctuary doors. Included on the platform are:(1) a PC station for feeding graphics to dual video projectors that show on the white walls on either side of the baptistery; (2) a 24-channel audio board that feeds power amplifiers in a closet downstairs in the sanctuary; (3) cable television, phone, and 10Base-T computer cabling that is home-run to the equipment room on the other end of the church building. (On Sept. 13, 2001, we were able to project the President’s address to the nation live as part of a special prayer meeting); (4) cassette recording and playback equipment, DVD playback equipment, VCR playback equipment, and remote control receivers for projector remote controls; and (5) a complete programmable light board. Church websites and e-mail lists can become a means for keeping members informed of news and prayer requests between meetings and for posting photographs of mission trips, new members, and other types of information. By 2006, the number of people with integrated, data-capable cell phones will exceed the current number of people with Internet accounts. These phones allow the transmission of short text messages (like prayer requests) and even pictures. Some church nurseries hand out vibrating pocket pagers to moms and dads so that, if necessary, a nursery worker can summon a parent without disturbing the service. Many churches are now creating their own music CDs utilizing the latest synthesizer-based electronic keyboards and computerized digital mixing. Churches are placing MP3 files of their pastors’ messages on their websites so Page 7 that folks who weren’t in attendance can listen to those messages on their computers or download them to their MP3 players. Services such as sermonaudio.com offer thousands of messages by quality speakers on just about any imaginable topic. Religious Internet radio stations such as those on live365.com feature traditional Christian music on a 24/7 basis. All of these technological advances have given today’s churches many more tools to use in ministering to a technologically sophisticated membership. While the message should never change, the way it is delivered sometimes needs a tweak now and then. (Jerry Thacker is president of Right Ideas, Inc., and Scepter Institute. He is also publisher of Today’s Christian Preacher.) The Overnight Success Myth Success takes time. People who believe in the overnight success expect amazing results the minute they start working toward their goal. It’s not going to happen. Don’t let this get you down - it’s a positive. When you know the truth about success you won’t become upset when immediate results can’t be seen. www.miproductions.org Digital sales fuel record biz in first-half ’06 By Chris Morris Wed Jul 5, 8:56 PM ET LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Physical album sales continued to decline in the U.S. during the first six months of 2006, down 4.2 percent in comparison to the same period last year. However, Nielsen SoundScan figures indicate that digital sales might boost the business as a whole. Sales of digital albums soared 126 percent during the first half of the year, while digital tracks rose 77 percent. I believe that it’s the right thing to do because on my end I see a great resistance in the gospel industry for change. As I viewed the 2006 issue of Gospel Round Up, there was information regarding the Internet but nothing with regards to Internet radio or online distribution. Three ’05 holdovers round out the best-sellers of the first six months: U.K. troubadour James Blunt’s “Back to Bedlam” (Custard/ Atlantic), which sold nearly 1.7 million; R&B diva Mary J. Lamont Brown. “Mr. Entrepreneur” As a professional speaker, entrepreneur, and community leader, Lamont is rising to greater heights. By delivering straight forward, sincere, no holds barred, customized messages, he can awaken the gifts and talents that often lay dormant within individuals. It is a message that was given birth through experiences in his life but also from others. This Chicago native grew up in Harvey, IL and experienced a lot of success athletically. However, in junior high school he had difficulty dealing with his mother being on drugs, his stepfather leaving and his biological father in and out of jail. So while in high school, he began to give into the pressures of street life, where he found himself in handcuffs over 20 times. Although he was a convicted felon twice, he escaped the penitentiary by successfully completing sixty months of strict probation. Lamont is on his way to the top. He went where there was no path but is now blazing a trail. As a ‘passionate’ Entrepreneur, he has made a major impact in the public speaking industry. Lamont has left his audiences speechless with his speaking style. Some call him the next Les Brown and the first Lamont Brown. His family calls him Patricia Ann’s only boy. Others call him “The Motivator”. No matter what YOU call him. You will have to give him his props and call him HOT! Lamont is changing lives and giving hope on and off the stage. His messages not only leave you speechless but they also leave you with an action plan. He will cause you to use your fresh inspiration and excitement to PURSUE YOUR DREAMS with P.A.S.S.I.O.N. ***Coming Monday, August 21, 2006, you will have a chance to witness this sensation unveil a ‘radio ready’ revolutionary project during his Birthday / CD Release Party!!! In the mist of other negativity, He decided to change his life and become an example of hope to many. He wanted to become successful so that he could reach back into the communities of the world and say, “If I can do it, you can to”. His Burning Desire is to be Obedient to His Calling After he attended Grambling State University and Triton College, he decided to become a professional barber. Shortly after completing the program at Cain’s Barber College, Lamont became the coowner of SuperNatural Cuts Barber & Beauty Salon. In addition to that, he has continued a process of unending self-education, which has distinguished him as an authority on Pursuing Your Dreams. Although he still motivates from behind his barber chair, he often steps from behind the chair and on to the stage. He Page 9 has gone from your barber to your motivator, from community leader to community activist, from guest appearances on the radio to keynote speaker. In 2000, Lamont entered the public speaking arena on a part-time basis. After being encouraged by a few close friends and meeting Les Brown personally, in 2005 he decided to form his own company, LB International, Inc. The company provides ‘intimate’ personal and professional development, individual and small group coaching and unconventional training. He also has reinforcing products aimed at enhancing the lives of individuals, organizations and/or companies. Speaker After completing Les Brown’s ‘2005’ Speakers Training Summit in Orlando, Florida his life has not been the same. While on his track of success (after only eight months of membership) he was voted President of the South Suburban Chapter of Toastmasters International. A few months ago, Lamont shared the stage with Les Brown. He has made available his “live” recorded speech entitled Pursuing Your Dreams with P.A.S.S.I.O.N. He has often used that same powerful information to affect the lives of thousands of individuals in the Chicago land area. Not Just A Motivator, but an Author as well Lamont is also the author of the soon to be released book, Pursuing Your Dreams, “How Bad Do You Want It?” Lamont’s customized speeches and products will teach, inspire, and challenge audiences to new levels of achievement. First Head Line Home from Iraq, but no place to call home by Verenda Dobnik But when she returned home from Iraq, she found her storage locker had been empied of all of her belongings and her bank account had been depleated. She believes her boyfriend took everything and “just vanished.” Six months after her return to America, she lives in a homeless shelter in Brooklyn sharing a room with eight other women and attending a job training program. Her parents live in Jamaica, and are barely making ends meet, she says. Est.20,000 Veterans Homeless “I am just an ordinary person who served. I’m not embarrassed about my homelessness, because the circumstances that created it was not my fault,” says Beckford, 30, who was a military supply specialist at a U.S base in Iraq - a sitting duck for around the clock attacks “where hell was you home.” There are about 20,000 homeless vets in the United States, according to government figures. About 10 percent are from either the 1991 Gulf War or the current one, about 40 percent are Vietnam veterans, and most of the others served when the country was not officially at war. About 350 nonprofit service organizations are working with the Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans. But the veterans still land on a hard bottom line. Almost half of America’s 2.7 million disabled veterans recieve $337 or less per month in benefits, according to the government. Fewer than one-tenth are rated 100 percent disbled, meaning they get $2,393 a month, tax free. New York - Herold Noel had nowhere to call home after returning from military service in Iraq. The reason for their plight are many. For some, residual stress from daily insurgent attacks and roadside bombs makes it tough to adjust to civilian life; some can’t navigate goovernment assistance programs; others simply can’t afford a house or apartment. Page 10 Deserted Military since 2000 By Ana Radelat Washington- Swept up by a wave of patriotism after U.S invasion of Iraq, Chris Magaoay joined the Marine Corps in November 2004. The newly married Magaoay thought a military career would allow him to continue his college education, help his country and set his life on the right path. Less than two years later, Magaoay became on of the thousands of military deserters who have chosen a life of exile or possible court-martial rather than fight in Iraq or Afghanistan. “It wasn’t something I did on the spur of the moment,” said Magaoay, a native of Maui, Hawaii.” It took me a long time to realize what was going on, the war was illegal.” Magaoay said his disillusionment with the military began in boot camp in Twentynine Palms, calif, where a superior officer joked about killing and mistreating Iraquis. When his unit was deployed to Iraq in March, Magaoay and his wife drove to Canada, joining a small group of deserters who are trying to win permission from the Canadian government to stay. “We’re like a tight-knit family,” Magaoay said. The Pentagon says deserters like Magaoay represent a tiny fraction of the nation’s fight forces. “The vast majority of soldiers of soldiers who desert do do for personal , family or financial problems, not for political or conscientious objector purpose,” said LT. Col. Bryan Hafery, a spokesman for the Army. Since 200, about 40,000 troops from all branches of the military have deserted, the Pentagon says. More than half served in the Army. But the Army says numbers have decreased each year since the United States began its war on terror in Afghanistan. Those who help war resisters say desertion is more prevalent than the military has admit- the’re lying now,” said Eric Seiltz, an ted. attorney who represents Army Lt. Gannett New Service This is our chance to help the troops returning from Iraq. There is much healing and understanding about what war does to a person and the changes that they deal with. Vietnam Iraq It’s not fair that our men and women who serve our country should return to homelessness. It shouldn’t be like this but its a reality! Post Tramatic Stress Disorder is Real and many troops returning will go into denial. If you know a vet please ask them to get help! There are many organization that are available to help our troops readjust to civilian life. When I returned from Vietnam thirty five years ago. I had no ideal what I would have to deal with. I consider myself to be fortunate that I was not affected by Agent Orange that has affected many of the men and women who served in the Vietnam Conflict. The Vietnam veterans served because we had no choice in the matter most of us were drafted, did our basic training and advanced individual training and sent to Vietnam to fight a senseless war that claimed many lives. For those who returned there were stories in the newspapers that a vet snapped and was incarcerated for their crime. Trust me anytime a person experiences war it changes their life for ever. They return home after living in a situation that any day their life can come to an end it could be a sniper, a land mine, booby trap, mortar attack or a child with a bomb strapped to there body and their mission is to kill as many U.S. Troops as possible. Some committed suicide by the age of forty because they couldn’t cope. Many were married more than once because they had reoccurring nightmare of the time they served. The same thing is happening today and it seems like it’s going to get worse before it gets better. But in the mean time how can we help the troops returning home from Iraq. Page 11 I have met many men who served in Vietnam who are Ministers, Bishop’s and Deacons who attend church. I have met them at meetings to help them cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. As an African American man I am asking you to help these men and women get their lives back on track. If you have a loved one who served and have not seeked help please refer them to the Veteran Administration. I suggest that before you write them off read and learn so that you will have a better understanding of how a war can change the lives of our young men and women. I believe that had I not been for the Vietnam Conflict those who served would have been better husbands and fathers. R. O. G. It was in that year and from within the inimitable incubator of 1952 Chicago Gospel music that Albertina Walker first organized and managed the legendary Caravans Gospel singing group. For more than half a century The Caravans have been an unwavering source of traditional Gospel music. With the founding of The Caravans in 1952, Albertina Walker soon became known as “Albertina Walker-The Star Maker.” Her unerring eye for extraordinary talent and her steadfast commitment to the Word led her to discover and launch the careers of such Gospel greats as Inez Andrews, Shirley Caesar, Cassietta George, Evangelist Dorothy Norwood, James Herndon, Josephine Howard, Delores Washington and the “King of Gospel” Reverend James Cleveland. Rev. Cleveland not only accompanied the Caravans on piano, but also narrated hymns, his relaxed monologues a stark contrast to the fervent group vocals behind him. After Mahalia Jackson’s death in 1972, Albertina Walker soon became the “Queen of Gospel Music”, and is now reunited with her royal court of Gospel superstars from The Caravans; Dorothy Norwood, “The World’s Greatest Gospel Storyteller”, Deloris Washington, “The Sweet Songbird” of Gospel,” and Inez Andrews “The High Priestess” of Gospel Music” on the forthcoming Malaco CD, “Paved The Way”. This classic new release from the all-star edition of The Caravans includes 6 new songs and seven gospel standards, including The Caravan’s legendary hit: “Mary Don’t You Weep.” Since their founding in 1952, The Caravans have gone on to produce more stars than any other singing group in the history of Gospel music. After 54 years of unsurpassed excellence as Caravans group members and as solo artists during the various permutations of the group over the years, The Caravans have reunited for their first new recording in 40 years. The Caravans, “Paved The Way” (Malaco Music Group) reunites four of the bestknown, still living singers from the group. Although the fabulous ladies of The Caravans are now esteemed seniors in their “sensational seventies” (with the exception of the ‘baby of the bunch’ – Deloris Washington at 68) they sound as good as ever (and they look good too – always impeccably attired). The new CD was recorded at Chicago’s West Point Baptist Church, which brings things full circle … at least for Albertina Walker. West Point Baptist Church is Albertina Walker’s home church, where she first sang in the children’s choir at the age of 4. Page 14 With the support and instruction of such giants of the genre as Thomas A. Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland (who was a childhood friend), Albertina grew ever stronger in her commitment to traditional Gospel and her love of the Lord, as well as developing an ever-deepening understanding of the Gospel music business, all without ever leaving Chicago! “All I have ever wanted to do was sing Gospel music and live in Chicago,” says Albertina Walker. “We paved the way. I’m not bragging or anything, but the Lord used us. He used us to lay the foundation for the future. Money wasn’t the thing. We did it because we loved the Lord. That is what I was taught and that is what I still believe. We were young. We were saved. And any way that He wanted to use us, we were willing to do it and that is the way it was and still is,” she says. The Caravans were reunited through the efforts of Evangelist Dorothy Norwood, who approached Albertina Walker with the idea of recording a new CD of The Caravans. “I thought that since there were four or five of us that had been members of The Caravans who were still doing well as singers and singing well, I realized there were still enough former members to reconstitute the group and do another recording as The Caravans,” says Dorothy Norwood. Albertina Walker said yes to Dorothy Norwood right away, quickly followed by Deloris Washington and Inez Andrews. Shirley Caesar was eager to join the ladies but was prevented to do so by a very busy schedule of prior commitments Dorothy Norwood served as producer for the recording session, capably assisted by Reverend Milton Biggham. Some of Gospel music’s greatest musicians were assembled to play on the new CD recorded at Albertina’s church, the West Point Baptist Church. The all-star crew, dubbed by Norwood as the “Big Boys” included: Derrick Lee (of Bobby Jones fame), Richard Gibbs (son of Inez Andrews and regular accompanist for Aretha Franklin) and Al Willis. The West Point Choir, known professionally as “Just Friends” sang the background vocals. Artemis Gospel’s Evelyn TurrentineAgee was a perfect guest for the session. Her dramatically anointed vocals are in full effect on The Caravans’ “No Coward Soldier.” “I learned early on that the musicians are the life of your session. You have to get the right musicians and the right songs. We didn’t come back to do all old songs. Because that’s old soup warmed over. We did do some classics, but we also have six news songs on the CD including “He Fixed It” (written by Milton Biggham) featuring Albertina leading and Deloris Washington taking the mic on songs and six new ones on their new ‘(Lord, Let Your Will) Be Done,’” release “Pave The Way” Malaco says Dorothy Norwood. Sales are Up! Artist like Tri-N-tee 5:7, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin, have all helped contribute to increase Music Sales Nashville, TN — There is good news for gospel music in 2006 and it’s not just in the message of the music. According to Nielsen SoundScan, gospel music album sales experienced a double-digit percent increase in sales at the mid-year point in 2006, compared to the first half of 2005. This marks the first time since 2002 that gospel music sales have risen in the first half of the year. When factoring in rising digital tracks sales (which were not tracked until two years ago), the total sales impact of gospel music adds up to a reason for rejoicing, says John W. Styll, president of the Gospel Music Association (GMA). “The first half of 2006 has been encouraging for gospel music,” said Styll. “It is especially good news that the growth extends to a wide diversity of albums and styles, suggesting that the inspiring and compassionate message that unifies all gospel music is resonating in our culture today.” As of July 2, 2006, 17,952,000 gospel music albums, including those sold via digital download, have been sold yearto-date compared to 16,085,000 albums for the same six-month time period in 2005. That represents an 11.6 percent increase in sales in a 2005 to 2006 yearto-date comparison. In contrast, the overall music business reports a four percent decline in album sales. Legal music downloads are accounting for a continually larger piece of overall gospel music sales. Of the total albums sold in the first half of the year, 502,000 were purchased digitally compared to 191,000 albums downloaded in 2005, a nearly 163 percent growth in digital album sales from the first half of 2005 compared with the first half of 2006. That growth is skewing slightly higher than the overall music business’ 126 percent increase in digital album sales. As for individual digital tracks, 2,688,000 songs were sold through digital downloads for the same time period compared to 1,989,000 last year, a 35 percent increase. The top-selling digital track so far in 2006 is “Beautiful Love” by The Afters. According to Styll, no trend or style of gospel music has sparked the sales growth. “Take any album’s individual success out of the charts and gospel music sales are still up. Both seasoned artists and new names are finding their way onto the charts. Consumers are buying gospel music where they want to buy music, whether at a Christian store, a general market retailer or on their computer. If there is any explanation behind the growth trend, it might be that we are seeing more acceptance in the marketplace for the gospel message, and hopefully, we are also finally experiencing a decline in music piracy,” Page 20 he said. The top 20 albums on the year-to-date Billboard Christian/Gospel music album chart for the six month period ending July 2, 2006 are: 1. Precious Memories -Alan Jackson 2. Hero - Kirk Franklin 3. Flyleaf - Flyleaf 4. WoW Gospel 2006 -Various 5. Lifesong Casting Crowns 6. Piece of My Passion Juanita Bynum 7. Testify - P.O.D. 8. WoW Hits 2006 - Various 9. Coming Up To Breathe -MercyMe 10. Tyscot Records Employee’s Health Scare Inspires Groundbreaking Project Nashville, TN — The first dose of V3 is coming right up, with the release of their anticipated debut album. It’s the kind of record that speaks to young people that like to have fun — “A lot of people shy away from church and the Gospel, because they think they are going to be judged, or put down, or preached to,” says Shelley, “and they don’t want to hear that. Whitney is simply in town spending time with a friend,” that from CeCe’s publicist Erma Byrd. “No recordings or business dealings, just friends spending time together.” The saints at Born Again Church also said Whitney has been there before with CeCe.
