RONDANE
C
lose your eyes and sense the mountains: over 2,000 metre-high summits in a singular landscape
decked in blinding white snow, the rays of the low-hanging sun reflecting on the glittering snow,
the bluish light. Tranquillity and quiet, and the knowledge that the sunny day can be transformed
within moments to threatening stormy weather. This is when you get the feeling that Rondane is a
place you must visit. Perhaps it is this feeling that has led so many artists and writers to derive inspiration
from Rondane – and maybe this is why people return to Rondane again and again over generations. Like
ancient giants the mountains stand at rest on the road that takes you alongside the Rondane national park.

3 SOHLBERGPLASSEN. Sohlbergplassen, the viewing point at Atnsjøen lake, curves gently around
slender pine trees. The platform frames the view
towards the lake and the rounded peaks of the Rondane massif almost exactly as they appear in Harald
Sohlberg’s famous painting “Winter’s Night in Rondane”. Architect: Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk.
4 STRØMBU. Strømbu is one of the main gateways
to the Rondane massif and an excellent starting
point for hikes in what was Norway’s first national
park. The rest area has a roof terrace and a lounge
directly adjacent to the river Atna that winds between pine trees and sand banks. The roof terrace

1 SOLLIA CHURCH. In 1720 a law was introduced
that required people to go to church twice each year.
The inhabitants of the Setningsdalen valley had to
make the long trek across the mountains to Ringebu, and on one occasion an entire group of travellers
froze to death. In 1732, the king granted permission to
build a new church, but the inhabitants of Sollia did
not receive any funds for construction. As a result,
the local parishioners mustered the ground, timber
and stone to build the church themselves. The timbered church was completed in 1738. Near the church
there is also a small rest area and an information
board. Landscape architect: LJB-Lars Berge.
