The fortress, built by the Venetians in the Middle Ages, was pulled down in the 14th century by will of the Patriarch of Aquileia and, in 1470 only, it was rebuilt by Friedrich II of Habsburg; the square tower and the two-storey building, which today houses the Castle Museum, date back to this period. The two bronze figures, “Mikeze e Jakeze”, that strike the hours along the castle walls. The path along the castle walls provides one of the most beautiful views over the city and the gulf of Trieste. http://www.turismofvg.it/Castles/San-Giusto-Castle www.triestecultura.it The Castle of Miramare Built between 1856 and 1860 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico, the building is strongly influenced by a Romantic taste, as a revisited construction of a medieval fortress. The Castle of Miramare stands on the tip of the promontory of Grignano. Its position overlooking the sea, provides the possibility to enjoy a wonderful view over the Gulf of Trieste. The Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with valuable botanical species where one can relax. A noble residence commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, its interiors feature sumptuous original furniture. Characterised by the “white towers” described by Carducci, rather than a castle it is an example of a nineteenth-century prince residence, the result of the eclectic architectural style of that period. http://www.castello-miramare.it/eng/home/home.php The Church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo (commonly called Church of Sant’ Antonio Nuovo) The façade of the church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, built in the mid 19th century and popularly known as “Sant’Antonio Nuovo” stands out as if set in a natural scenery at the end of the Grand Canal, in the heart of Borgo Teresiano. The façade’s austere and regular classical style is a clear reference to the great Greek and Roman monuments and to the Pantheon’s façade in particular, with its six Ionic columns surmounted by a gable that used to be reflected in the canal. The interior is extremely spacious and is adorned with frescoes by Sebastiano Santi dated 1836 depicting the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. The façade is characterized by six ionic columns. On the main façade, in the attic, there are six statues sculpted by Francesco Bosa in 1842, depicting san Giusto, san Sergio, san Servolo, san Mauro, Sant ‘ Eufemia and santa Tecla. Particular of san Giusto, 1842 by Francesco Bosa, representing the patron Saints of Triest. http://www.promotrieste.it/en/visiting-trieste/catholic-churches/the-new-st-anthony-the-thaumaturgist-church/ http://itinerari.comune.trieste.it/itinerario-religioso/ www.diocesi.trieste.it The synagogue Different architectural styles have successfully blended into this building, whose essence is represented by four powerful marble pillars supporting an imposing central dome. The exterior style was said to be late Roman of a type found in fourth-century Syria, and the architects chose it because it brought them close as possible to ancient Jewish architecture. Jews in the Holy Land and throughout the Roman Empire had used Roman forms. Syria was near enough to the Holy Land to incorporate design elements used by Jews. A synagogue in this style could suggest the wide geographic distribution of Jews, both in the Roman Empire and in modern times. It could suggest the proximity of Jews to others within the ancient and the modern Roman (that is, Habsburg) empires. It could suggest the Jews’ Middle Eastern origin without making them look too close to Byzantine Christians or to Moslems.” The building was built between 1908 and 1912, and bears the hallmark of architects Ruggero and Arduino Berlam. The synagogue was unveiled in 1912 in the presence of municipal officials, and it replaced the four smaller ones that previously existed. Architect Ruggero Berlam Completed1912 http://www.triestebraica.it S. Nicolo` Church (Greek Orthodox Church) XVIII c. The Church is situated on the seafront and is consecrated to Saint Nicholas, patron of sailors, ship-owners and all those involved in maritime trade. Following the split between Serbian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox communities over which language to use during the service, the Greeks purchased the building and consecrated it in 1787. Built on the seafront in the first half of the eighteenth century, it was not by chance that the Greek Orthodox church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, ship owners and all those involved in maritime trade, and to the Holy Trinity. Two balconies overlook the nave: the lower one was once set aside for women, and the upper one reserved for the choir. http://discover-trieste.com/code/15591/Greek-Orthodox-Church-of-San-Nicolo The Botanical Gardens The Botanical Gardens are the property of the Municipality of Trieste and a part of the Civic Scientific Museums. The layout of the gardens, as depicted in the map, includes various areas. Associated with the gardens is a natural reserve comprising the Biasoletto wood and the Farneto wood (for a total of 90 ha). The Botanical Gardens publishes the Index Seminum, where each year the species for which seeds are offered are listed, complete with all of the collection data. Alcea rosea, Itinerary ‘Il Giargino dei Semplici’ In its devotion to medicinal plants, the Simple Garden observes a series of systematic criteria. The choice of species is based on the list of plants registered by the Official Pharmacopoeia of the Italian Republic, supplemented by those cited in ethnobotanical studies of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, historical lists (Marchesetti) and research on medicinal plants carried out in the Coastal Region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Tominz). http://www.ortobotanicotrieste.it/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Depl_GIARDINO-SEMPLICI12.pdf http://www.ortobotanicotrieste.it/wp-content/uploads/quaderni_scaricabili/orto%20botanico%20bassa%20risoluzione.pdf The Revoltella Museum The Revoltella Museum is an important modern art gallery that originated from an institution founded in 1872 by Baron Pasquale Revoltella (1795 – 1869). Revoltella bequeathed his palace and his art collection to the city of Triest; but in addition to the building and the objects contained within he also bestowed a conspicuous revenue to the museum. This allowed for the continuous increase of patrimony and accumulation, in a remarkably short time, of a considerable art collection. By the end of the 19th century the collection included a number of important Italian artists, such as Francesco Hayez, Domenico Morelli, Giacomo Favretto, Urbano Nono and Filippo Palizzi, as well as a good number of foreign artists. Lionello Balestrieri, Beethoven, 1900, oil on canvas, 202 x 420 cm Museo Revoltella, Permanent exposition http://www.museorevoltella.it/museo.php?sub=7&ID=39 The Railway Museum The Railway Museum is located on the site of the former station of the Parenzana narrow-gauge railway, on the Campo Marzio (Field of Mars) in Trieste or the former Sant’Andrea Railway Station, which was first built in 1887 and, in the course of time, became the main railway station of the S. Sabba oil port (1889) and the Parenzana railway (1902). The museum was founded by a group of enthusiasts and railway workers in 1975, primarily to serve as a meeting place for railway fans. The main goal of the founders was to establish a centre for the preservation of historical railway material at the abandoned station building in Trieste, hoping that it would grow into a real museum dedicated to the history of the rail traffic in Trieste and the surroundings. Their wish came true on 8 March 1985, when the Railway Museum was inaugurated. www.museoferroviariotrieste.it The Verdi Theatre, founded as “Teatro Nuovo” A proposal to the Austrian Chancery from Giovanni Matteo Tommasini to build a private theatre had existed since 1795 and, in June 1798, a contract was drawn up whereby annual funding would come from the municipality and Tommasini would hold the rights to several boxes and the rights to sell others. Gian Antonio Selva, the architect of the La Fenice in Venice, was engaged, and he designed a classic horseshoe-shaped auditorium. However, his exterior designs were considered to be too plain for the Austrians who then engaged another architect, Matteo Pertsch, to solve the problem, which was accomplished by incorporating elements of Milan’s La Scala opera house. The “Nuovo” became a mixture of La Fenice on the inside and La Scala on the exterior. http://www.teatroverdi-trieste.com/cache/box/files/fFACLaE.pdf Day 1: Welcome Party & City Tours, Tuesday 6 Sept.
