Here's how we Reduce,
Reuse, and Recycle :
•
We conducted an independent Energy Audit.
•
We installed energy efficient lighting fixtures inside & outside the building.
•
All bulbs in the Temple are either compact fluorescent (CFL)
or the similarly efficient LED.
•
HVAC and heating is monitored electronically.
•
The paper that Beth-El uses in the office has 30 percent recycled content.
•
Old flyers are reused in the office for note paper.
•
Recycling bins can be found throughout Beth-El. Large
containers are located outside near the trash dumpster.
All kinds of paper are recycled (office, newspaper,
cardboard). Co-mingled glass, plastic, and aluminum
are recycled. Just as at home, you can help. Become
familiar with what can and cannot be recycled. Rather than
create more trash, please look for the bins and recycle whenever
you can.

To reduce mailing costs and the use of paper, donations to Beth-El
can now be made on-line through the Beth-El web site. On-line
reservations and payment for events are coming.

We are using bio-degradable paper plates and cups.

in the Rhode Island business community during
the last 25 years. He was recently awarded the
David E. Sweet Award for his leadership and
commitment to the community. We know him as
an utterly decent, thoughtful and caring mensch
and a devoted husband and father. We look

laughing, swimming, and eating.
This event is open to all Temple
members ages 7-12 years old.
Swimming will be supervised by
certified lifeguards at the East
Side/Mt. Hope YMCA. The cost
for the evening is $10 per child.
Parents are welcome to drop off
their child(ren).
Either you control your attitude or it controls you.
Money is a lousy way of keeping score.
Just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean
they don’t love each other. And just because
they don’t argue doesn’t mean they do.
No matter how good a friend is, they’re going
to hurt you every once in a while, that's life.

PROVTY Tikkun Olam Project for Hoilday Season
Dear Fellow Congregants,
The Temple Beth-El Youth Group, PROVTY, has developed a wonderful Tikkun Olam project and
are offering each of us the opportunity to make an impact this year for the Holiday Season. When
we join together, we can help our community by teaching our kids our values of tzedakah. It is our
hope that you will purchase gift cards through the Temple’s “ShopWithScrip Program” for all your
gift giving needs AND will consider purchasing an additional gift card for a needy family.
The need in our community is greater than ever before. The Temple Beth-El Youth Program and the
Religious School have teamed up with Jewish Family Service to try to combat some of the needs in

REL IGIOUS SCHOOL
DC Trip
While most of you were probably
enjoying an extra hour of sleep on
Sunday, November 3rd (courtesy
of Daylight Saving Time), many of
our seventh grade students along
with their teacher, Alan Rosenberg;
School Administrator, Anita Steiman;
and several parents were up at the
crack of dawn (5:00 AM!). They
were heading to TF Green Airport
to board a flight to our nation’s
Capital. They spent an incredible
day together touring some of our
national treasures; including the
Washington Monument, the
Memorial to Japanese-American
Patriotism in World War II, Albert
Einstein Memorial, Vietnam Veterans
Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean
War Veterans Memorial, World
War II Memorial, and the FDR
Memorial.
The main purpose of the trip,
though, was to visit the United
States Holocaust Memorial
Museum to enhance the students’
current Religious School studies.
This living memorial to the Holocaust
provided students with historical
footage, videos, artifacts, and
eyewitness testimonies of this horrific
time in our history. What a deeply
moving experience! We were so
impressed with their reflections and
deep introspection. These young
people will soon become the
link in our history, teaching future
generations to “Never Forget."
Field trips are such a vital

component of our Religious School
curriculum. These experiences
enrich and bring to life the
important aspects of our programs
of study. They present a unique
way for teachers to transmit
knowledge, allowing students
to have fun while learning. The
children experience hands-on learning
while also being introduced to new
environments that are community building. This gives our students a
chance to get to know each other and
interact in a more relaxed environment
without the pressure of grades or the
constraints of classrooms. These are
the memories of Religious School that
will remain with our students long past
the textbooks, films and traditional
classroom experience.
The seventh grade students of the
Religious School would like to express
their gratitude to The Eleanore and
Melvin Frank Fund for their generous
donation to this wonderful field trip
to Washington, D.C.!

This cake is Torgan-Shalansky’s version of a
recipe her grandmother, who had emigrated
from Poland to Honduras, used.
INGREDIENTS

These are a sophisticated version of the
contestants’ favorite Passover dessert.
Cake
2 cups sifted cake flour (not self-rising)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
Mascarpone Cream
8 oz. mascarpone
1 cup chilled heavy cream
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
Dona Ana's Mango Sauce
3 large ripe mangoes
sugar
lime juice
PREPARATION
Cake
• Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan
(2 inches deep). Line bottom with round of parchment
paper, then butter parchment.
• Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda & salt.
• Beat together butter and sugar in a large bowl with an
electric mixer until fluffy and pale. Beat in vanilla. Add eggs,
one at a time, beating after each addition. With mixer on
low, beat in buttermilk until just combined. Add flour mixture
in 3 batches, mixing after each addition until just combined.
• Pour batter into cake pan, smoothing top.
• Rap on counter to get rid of air bubbles.
• Bake until golden and a toothpick inserted in center comes
out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool in pan on a rack for 10
minutes, then run a knife around the edges of the pan to
loosen the cake, then invert it onto plate. Remove and
discard paper.
Mascarpone Cream
Beat mascarpone, cream and sugar in a large bowl
until mixture holds stiff peaks
Assembly
Halve cake horizontally with a long serrated knife.
Remove top half. Put bottom half on plate and spread with
half of cream. Put top half on, then spread with remainder
of cream. Serve with sauce alongside.
Dona Ana's Mango Sauce

Peel and pit mangoes. Put flesh into a blender with about
1 tablespoon of lime juice and two tablespoons of sugar.
INGREDIENTS
5 large egg whites
1/2 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
3/4 cup -1 cup sugar
(depends how sweet you want them)
4 cups long-shred unsweetened coconut
(about 6 ounces), lightly toasted
3/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted, cooled, ground
12 ounces bittersweet (not unsweetened) or
semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
PREPARATION
• Preheat oven to 275°F. Line 2 large baking sheets with
parchment paper. Place egg whites in large bowl; scrape
in seeds from vanilla bean. Using electric mixer, beat egg
whites until soft peaks form.
• Gradually add sugar, beating until meringue is very thick
(similar to marshmallow crème), about 5 minutes. Fold in
coconut, then almonds. Drop batter by rounded
tablespoonfuls onto prepared sheets, spacing mounds
1 1/2 inches apart.
• Bake macaroons until pale beige outside and dry-looking
(insides will still be soft), about 25 minutes. Transfer
baking sheets to racks; cool macaroons completely.
Transfer macaroons to work surface; re-line pans with
clean parchment.
• Place chocolate in top of double boiler over simmering
water. Stir chocolate until smooth; remove from over water.
Dip bottom of 1 macaroon into melted chocolate to depth
of 1/4 inch. Place on prepared sheet, chocolate side down.
Repeat dipping with remaining macaroons. Chill until
chocolate is firm, about 1 hour. These can be made 3 days
ahead. Cover and keep refrigerated. Let macaroons stand
at room temperature 1 hour before serving. Makes roughly
4-5 dozens.

“Every good baker needs a good teacher. My
first and best teacher was my mother, Sally
Goldberg. The Rugelach teacher was my wife’s
cousin Irene, who introduced me to the
Cuisinart. We baked these at the Jersey Shore in
90% humidity (not recommended) for a first attempt!”

TRADITIONAL RUGELACH
INGREDIENTS
Dough
Dough
3 cups flour
1/2 lb (2 sticks) butter, unsalted, softened
1 package yeast
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon salt
3 egg yolks
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
Mix ingredients together to make dough.
Refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
Roll out dough and make circles.
Mixture for rolling
2 cups sugar
3 teaspoons cinnamon
8 ounces chopped pecans,
mixed very finely in a food processor.
Filling
Mixture for spreading
1 lb pitted prunes
1/4 lb apricots
1 cup raisins
1 teaspoon lemon rind
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Seedless preserves (apricot, raspberry or plum)
PREPARATION
• Cook prunes, apricots and raisins. Chop, then mix
the rest of ingredients.
• Shape Hamentaschen and bake in an ungreased
pan in 375°F oven for approximately 15 minutes.
PREPARATION
• In a food processor or a stand mixer, combine flour, salt
and yeast. Cut in the butter. Add yolks and heavy cream;
mix well. Wrap in foil and refrigerate overnight. Preheat
oven to 375°F. Prepare cookie sheets with parchment or
silicone liner. Divide dough into 4 and work one part at a
time keeping the rest cold. Spread board generously with
pecan sugar and roll out dough in mixture, covering both
sides and working some into the dough. Roll into 14 to
16 inch circle. Cut into quarters; spread each fourth with
jam, then cut each fourth into 4 slices. Sprinkle with more
pecan sugar and roll up each slice from the edge to the
center; bend each piece into a crescent. Bake 12 -15
minutes; cool on racks and sprinkle with powdered sugar
if desired. Makes 64.
CHOCOLATE RUGELACH
Mixture for spreading
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons chopped bittersweet chocolate
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon espresso powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons melted butter
Roll out 1 piece of dough as above in pecan sugar.
Brush with melted butter. Spread with chocolate mixture;
cut into slices and roll up as above. Makes 16.

Celebration culminated with our
Centennial Shabbaton Weekend
in October. The Friday evening
Sisterhood Shabbat service
was well attended by past
presidents and current members
who all received an annual
blessing under the ceremonial
chuppah. Our guest speaker,
WRJ Northeast District Vice
President Denise Levine, gave an
informative talk about the history
of Women of Reform Judaism and
specifically the long and active
participation of Temple Beth-El

Torah service in the Bennett Chapel
followed by a Bagel brunch. It was
an interesting Torah study from the
women’s perspective. A playful,
information - packed bingo session,
complete with prizes, helped the
spirit flow.

its Centennial Donor Nonevent.
That’s correct. Sisterhood is inviting

Brotherhood keeps the activities going!
This year, the Brotherhood of Temple
Beth - El began a busy calendar year
of activities with a Sunday Breakfast
on October 21st, featuring Temple
member Art Solomon. Art spoke about
the work and fun of owning three minor
league baseball teams.
Next, we sponsored the amazing
Edward Twins at the Temple on
November 16th. This tremendous
show was a huge success, and
assisted the Brotherhood’s scholarship
fund for graduating seniors.
We’re now proud to announce our
next event, which is a viewing party
of the New England Patriots versus
the Cleveland Browns. The party
takes place in the Silverstein Meeting
Hall directly after Religious School
on December 8th. We’ll have all
kinds of fun including barbequing
hamburgers and hot dogs. There will
be raffles and prizes available for all.
including the pinnacle of our social
calendar, the Charles Lindenbaum
Memorial Banquet in May. The fun
is just beginning !!

To Sadie, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means “being a mature,
responsible adult. It means facing the real world and coming
out of the shell a little bit more. To me, being Bat Mitzvah
is a huge milestone.” For her Mitzvah Mania Project, Sadie
is volunteering in the preschool/ITC area of the Jewish
Alliance of Greater Rhode Island. She goes to the Jewish
Alliance at least once a week from 3:30 to 5:00 PM. She is
also collecting diapers for families who cannot afford them.
During her lifetime, Sadie would like to “accomplish being
a pediatrician, have a comfortable and happy family, and
have people in my life that I love and who love me back”.

Micah Moskoff, a graduate of our Temple
Religious School, recently reflected on the
10th Anniversary of her recovery from serious
illness. It is a statement of hope that inspires
all of us. LYG
“Ten years ago today I heard words that
changed my life forever: I was diagnosed
with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the
age of eleven. Some days, I feel as if it all
happened the day before, while other days
I wonder if it even happened at all. There
was so much pain and hurt, physical and
emotional, that happened during and after
treatment but, you know, there were also
many joyful moments. I met people I
never would have met, I grew closer to my
family, and I learned how to become the
person I have always wanted to be, doing
things I have always imagined doing. If I
could go back and talk to that scared girl
who asked a nurse five minutes after her
diagnosis if she would die, I would tell her
this: "No, you will survive. But you will do
more than that: you will live.”

Engraving a Memorial Tablet means that the

the entrance to the Fain Sanctuary during
