The IEU is actively engaged in representing members’ views
on a wide range of educational issues.
nsw/act
The IEU has a position on the current NSW Board of Studies, a key body in
determining the operations and policies of education. The IEU also has
representatives on board curriculum committees. The IEU Education Issues
Committee (elected by IEU Council) has developed IEU submissions on a series
of Government reviews of education and consults extensively with other
groups in the education community (including other teachers unions,
employers and parents). The IEU has been prominent in the field of early
childhood education, and has made many representations to the State
Government on issues such as funding and regulations.
The IEU establishes reference groups to promote the exchange of information
in new areas of development or in times of change. Current groups include the
Vocational Education Reference Group and the Information Technology
Reference Group.
our national union
Our national Union is the
Independent Education Union of
Australia. This Union is able to
protect members’ industrial
interests at a national level, and
participate in a broad range of
education areas. The Union
provides an invaluable forum for
discussing issues of common
concern to teachers and education
employees in all states and
territories of Australia.
6 www.ieu.asn.au
affiliations
The IEU is affiliated to Unions
NSW, and through the IEUA to the
ACTU, Education International and
the Council of Pacific Education
(COPE).
publications
Newsmonth
Twice each term all members receive a
copy of the IEU newspaper, Newsmonth.
Newsmonth keeps members informed
and up-to-date on educational,
industrial and branch news. Full salary
scales are published as they change.
Newsmonth is the vital link with what
is happening in your profession.
Independent Education
Independent Education is an education
journal devoted to examining state,
national and international trends in
education and is published three times
per year. Articles written by IEU
members are always welcome.
Bedrock
Bedrock examines issues of
significance to early childhood
education. Bedrock is only distributed
to members working in early childhood
services and to subscribers. Articles
from members are always welcome.
NewsExtras and IEU bulletins
IEU bulletins and NewsExtras are sent directly to members at their work-place.
These publications are produced regularly and contain information on issues of
immediate concern to teachers and education staff.

union training
The IEU provides a range of professional
conferences and courses for members.
Training for IEU school chapter
representatives, and courses on broader
industrial issues such as health & safety, and
enterprise bargaining, are conducted
throughout NSW and the ACT each year. Paid
release is a feature of designated union
training programs.
The advent of teacher accreditation and
mandated professional development hours
has seen the IEU become an endorsed
provider of Institute of Teachers registered
PD for teaching standards in Elements 2 to 7.
The Union has developed a 2 hour workshop
series called Pedagogy in the Pub, which
delivers registered PD to teachers in city,
regional, and rural venues.
Likewise, the IEU registers all appropriate
courses, conferences and workshops to
ensure that Union members get high quality
learning experiences as well as hours that
count towards PD requirements. The Union
provides workshops to assist teachers in their
understanding of accreditation processes and
the preparation of accreditation evidence.
The Union provides annual or bi-annual
conferences for particular sectors of
membership such as early childhood teachers
and school support staff, and for particular
aspects of union engagement such as gender
equity and the environment.
Members are asked to always register for
union PD and training events. Detailed
information appears in Newsmonth, and on
the IEU website, or members can contact the
Union Office.

Retired members are eligible to
join the Retired Members’
Association.
Meetings are held three times
per year ending with a
Christmas social function.
teacher exchange program
The IEU arranges teacher exchanges between members of the IEU in
schools in NSW/ACT and teachers in the United Kingdom, Canada, USA and
International schools in Europe.
International schools teach
in English, so a second
language is rarely required.
The IEU introduced the
Teacher Exchange Program
as a means of offering
NSW/ACT non-government
school teachers a chance
to not only experience a
different teaching
environment, but also to
take up a golden
opportunity to live in
another country for an
extended period of time
whilst on full pay. To be
eligible to apply for an
exchange, teachers must
have a minimum of five
years teaching experience.
Teachers may be offered
positions in either public,
Catholic or private schools.
It is important that each
applicant checks with the
appropriate employing authority before completing the IEU application
form.
Non members of the IEU may also apply to the Teacher Exchange Program
and will be charged a higher fee.

provide private health insurance to the education community and their
families. There are thirteen restricted health funds in Australia and
Teachers Health Fund is the largest.

10 www.ieu.asn.au
FIVE REASONS YOU SHOULD JOIN TEACHERS HEALTH FUND:
1
2
3
4
We offer value for money health insurance, with high benefits and annual limits
on Extras services and access to an extensive network of private hospitals.
We exist for members and genuinely care for the well-being of teachers. This
means that you receive the benefits of membership, not shareholders.
You can choose your own doctor and hospital, so you can avoid public hospital
waiting lists (depending on level of Hospital cover).
You don’t have to be sick to benefit. We offer cover for a range of services that
are not usually covered by Medicare, like general dental, physiotherapy and
remedial massage.
5
You can depend on us because we have cared for teachers and their families
since 1954.
Plus, you can access a Teachers Health Centre for dental and eyecare services.
Exclusive discounts are available to Teachers Health Fund members.
AM I ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?
You are eligible to join Teachers Health Fund if you are or were a full-time, part-time
or student member of the IEU. The family of existing Teachers Health Fund members
are also eligible to join.
Already with another health fund?
Switching to Teachers Health Fund couldn’t be easier. After joining you can either
notify your current fund yourself or we can do it for you.
How to join?
Joining Teachers Health Fund is fast, easy and hassle free. You can join online or over
the phone by calling 1300 728 188.

The IEU is able to negotiate these excellent
benefits due to the size of its membership.
The greater the membership strength of
the Union, the more benefits we are able
to bring to members.
You can assist by introducing someone you
work with to the advantages of membership.
Contact the IEU now for an application form
and help build your union.
