Friday 26 June 2015 Dear Parents and Carers
Friday 26 June 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have said formal farewells to our Year 11 and Year 13 students this week. Year 13 enjoyed a sophisticated
evening at the Burford Bridge Tithe Barn and it was lovely to see them looking so beautiful and relaxed after
months of toil and anxiety. Our Year 11 Leavers’ morning was its usual mix of formal acknowledgement of
the achievements of this year group and warm and funny tributes to each tutor and tutor group. Sandown
Park was the venue for their fantastic Prom. I must pay tribute to the pastoral team who, in addition to the
team of tutors, have provided so much support to these two year groups: Mr Carter, Mrs Boddy,
Mrs MacLean, Mr Waight, Mrs Cooley and Ms Harris-Stewart in the Sixth Form; and Mrs Evans, Mr Lach and
Mrs Garrod for Year 11 and to Mrs Pingree who worked tirelessly to ensure both Proms were such a success.
As we say goodbye to our cohort of upper school students, the transition process for our new Year 7s is
already in full swing. We have visited our principal primary feeder schools and have welcomed parents to
their first information evening. On Tuesday, the students themselves arrive and we are excited about
working with them to alleviate their anxieties and helping them to settle into our community as quickly as
possible.
Visit of Chris Grayling MP - On Friday we were
grateful to Chris Grayling MP for visiting our
school and subjecting himself to a grilling from
the Year 8, 9 and 10 members of the Junior
Leadership Team. Topics included exam
reform, school and police funding, the future of
Epsom hospital, teenage stress and mental
health and Conservative Party philosophy. I
also took the opportunity afterwards to
highlight the fact that Rosebery is the lowest
funded secondary school in Surrey, yet is one
of the highest performing, and to ask for his
support in addressing the funding formula
which sees the best funded Surrey school given
37% more funding per pupil than us.

Mr Grayling also met with Mrs Hanly and Mrs Keaveney, who outlined the work that they are doing to
promote STEM in the school, and particularly to highlight our celebration of Women in Engineering Day
which took place on Tuesday of this week. Years 7-9 enjoyed a number of interactive and creative activities
led by female engineers from Atkins and were given a brilliant insight into the opportunities available to
people who follow this career path.
Parent Council - I am very grateful to the members of the Parent Council who have been working hard to
create a communication guide for parents. They have also put together an introductory letter and you will
find both of these documents on our website under the Parents Tab/Parent Council using this link:
http://www.roseberyschool.co.uk/parents/parent-council/.
Further recognition for Rosebery - I am delighted to inform you that, as well as being presented with our
Gold Coachmark award this week, we also received notification that we have been designated as a Beacon
school by the Institute of Education and University College London for our teaching of the Holocaust. I am
thrilled that the hard work of the History Department, led by Miss Margetts, has been acknowledged in this
way and look forward to sharing with you how they will now work with others to share their expertise and
knowledge so that this vital part of history can continue to be taught to young people in a meaningful and
profound way.
A reminder that we close early on Thursday afternoon for Open Evening and then reopen at 9.40am on
Friday 3 July. We hope to see many of you on Saturday 4t July at our PSA Summer Fair.
Have a lovely weekend.

House Charity Week
House Charity Week took place between 9 and 13 June this
year. All four Houses came together to support the charity
Happy Child, which is based in Leatherhead and works to
support street children, especially girls at risk from sexual
exploitation in Brazil. Jenny Sullivan from the charity came to
Rosebery the week before and spoke to all the girls in assembly;
she gave a moving account of how the charity works directly
with young people and really does bring about change. Change
was the theme of our assembly.
The girls put on competitions, made cakes, sold sweets and altogether raised an incredible

PSA/Parents Social at The Cricketers – Tuesday 7 July from 7pm
Would you like to meet other Rosebery parents, guardians and carers and make a positive difference
to the school at the same time?
The PSA not only organises fundraising events and activities but also provides an opportunity to get
to know other people from the school community socially. This is something that is more difficult in
secondary schools as there is not the opportunity to chat at the school gate!
Please come and join us for a chat and a glass of wine at our next social evening on Tuesday 7 July
from 7pm at The Cricketers Stamford Green. We would love to see you!
Disco Coordinator
Due to our current disco coordinator’s daughter leaving the school, we need a parent/carer to take
on this exciting and important role. Our Year 7 and 8 students really look forward to attending the
discos and the coordinator is key to ensuring they all run smoothly. If you would like more
information, please contact the PSA on roseberypsa@hotmail.co.uk.
Co-Chair
We are also looking for a Co-Chair of the PSA to work in partnership with the PSA and the School.
Again, for more details, please contact the PSA on roseberypsa@hotmail.co.uk.

Partnership Dance Show
This week our Rosebery Dance club took part in the Epsom and Ewell Partnership Dance show at The Epsom
Playhouse. The theme this year was 80s music and all of the schools were fantastic. Rosebery chose the
Janet Jackson song ‘Rhythm Nation’ and gave a great performance. The students looked brilliant in their
costumes and were full of energy on stage. It is a testament to demonstrate how hard they work all year
round. Well done to Sian Walk, Jasmine Butt, Charlotte Dendy, Maggie Sullivan, Millie Akers, Aimee
Gumbs, Izzy Robertson, Charlotte Lynagh, Amelia Evans, Cara Evans, Rachel White, Briony Salter and Lucy
Jalland.
