Early French Immersion
The Greater Essex County District School Board
(GECDSB) is proud to offer parents and students
the opportunity to enrol in an Early French Immersion Program. French Immersion is a type of
schooling in which students receive all or most of their instruction in French from a teacher who
speaks French fluently. Designed specifically for children whose first language is not French,
this program enables children to become functionally bilingual.
Students can begin the Early French Immersion Program in Junior Kindergarten, Senior
Kindergarten, or in Grade 1. Students can even continue the program in high school where they
can fulfil diploma requirements in French.
GECDSB French Immersion K-12 Program
French Immersion students learn the same curriculum as that of students enrolled in an English
program. Only the language of instruction is different. As French Immersion students progress
through their elementary school years, English is gradually introduced into their program. The
proficiency of both French Immersion and English stream students in English language arts is
the same by the end of elementary school, although a lag may occur in the early years.
The Greater Essex County District School Board also offers Immersion and Extended French
programs at the secondary level. The following table outlines the framework for the French Immersion K–12 Program:

“Bilingualism is essential
for those who wish to
experience and enjoy
everything Canada has
to offer. A knowledge
of both languages extends
one’s horizons to every
corner of our country.”
Dr. Wilbert Keon, Worldrenowned heart surgeon,
Director of the University
of Ottawa Heart Institute
English and French are both part
of the cultural fabric of our country.
Today, with available
technology, information
flows farther and faster
across the globe. The
ability to communicate
and understand other
languages and cultures
is of critical importance and
will remain so in the future.
“Knowing both languages
has opened many doors for
me; doors to opportunity
and doors of the mind.
There’s an interesting
and exciting world out
there, waiting for those
who are ready to reach.”
Marc Garneau,
Canada’s first astronaut
Frequently Asked Questions
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS?
This is an optional program. Students come
from many academic levels and from a variety
of ethnic and social backgrounds. Entry level is
Junior Kindergarten or up to the first week of
October in Grade One. To enter beyond these
stages, a pupil must have been in an Early French
Immersion or specialized French program in the
previous grade.
MUST THE PARENTS BE
FRENCH SPEAKING?
No. The French Immersion Program is a French
as a Second Language program. No previous
French background is necessary.
WHAT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION?
Transportation to and from school is provided
in accordance with The Greater Essex County
District School Board’s policy.
DOES A CHILD IN KINDERGARTEN
FRENCH IMMERSION RECEIVE THE
SAME PREPARATION FOR GRADE
ONE AS IN THE ENGLISH PROGRAM?
Yes, except that your child is acquiring a second
language in addition to the other skills. The
Primary program reflects the child-centred approach to learning advocated by the Ministry of
Education. This is an excellent program that is
activity-based and meets individual children’s
needs through observation and planning.
DO FRENCH IMMERSION STUDENTS
RECEIVE SUPPORT IF THEY REQUIRE
SPECIAL NEEDS?
Yes. Students have access to all of the program
supports that are available in the GECDSB in
order to receive an education that is tailored to
their specific needs.
HOW DO I ENROL MY CHILD?
Registration may be completed with the school
secretary. Please call for an appointment to
register or to visit the school. For registration,
please bring your child’s birth certificate, health
card, and immunization record card. Call the
school secretary regarding information nights
or orientation days.
Research has also shown
that learning a second
language:
•
•
•
•
strengthens first language skills
enhances problem solving and
reasoning skills
increases capacity for creative thinking
increases respect and understanding of
other cultures
• increases understanding of oneself and
others
• increases appreciation of the value of
language and its functions
The Parent’s Role
One of the most important factors in this
program is the role of the parents. If a parent
is positive and encouraging, then the child will
sense his/her parent’s commitment. This is a key
ingredient for success.
It is helpful for parents to read to their children in their first language. As well, parents
should encourage their children to read and
write in their first language. Research shows
that knowledge learned in a first language can
be transferred to a second language.
For a parent who wishes to supplement the
home library with French books and CDs, the
school staff hosts book fairs during the year.
Also, children can purchase materials from book
clubs available through the schools.
