DOING BUSINESS IN BRAZIL
DOING BUSINESS
IN BRAZIL
A SHORT PRACTICAL GUIDE
2011
FOREWORD
The world has changed dramatically
in the past four years.
We were hit by one of the biggest
all-time financial crisis. The world
economy went from the purest form
of "laissez faire, laissez passer", to
sovereign governments intervening
in whole privately-held companies
and financial institutions, while
declaring them "too big to fail".
Suddenly, entire countries - former
colonisers, the old-time world
powers - find themselves on the
verge of bankruptcy, and are being
saved by former colonies, the new
world powers.
Brazil is no exception to formercolony-gone-new-world-power.
From the pre-salt findings in Tupi,
2007; to the subprime crisis that
developed into a world financial
crisis, which Brazil overcame bravely;
to being considered investment
grade by most rating agencies
around the world; followed by a
surprising 7,5% growth in 2010 and a
cover in Times magazine under the
title "Brazil takes off", there is no
doubt that Brazil is heating up. While
the world has seen real estate prices
fall vertiginously, Brazil has seen theirs
go up by 400% in the past four years.
Additionally, the country will be
hosting the 2014 Fifa World Cup, and
Rio, the 2016 Olympics. On top of all
the foregoing, Petrobras recently
announced a US$ 224,7 billion
investment plan for the 2011-2015
quadrennium.
If you add to these facts, a
population of over 185 million
people; a solid currency - the Real -;
and a stable democracy, you get a
country which definitely has to be
under everyones radar in the
present and forthcoming times.
But, if on one hand everything seems
appealing, on the other hand,
Forbes magazine recently ranked
Brazil only as the 73rd best country in
the world for foreigners to do
business in. Factors like bureaucracy,
a complex regulatory system, and
high taxes dictate such low ranking
for such a promising country.
However, provided that you study
the country before you come in and
that you are well informed once you
do, Brazil is an excellent place for
doing business. With all this in mind, we prepared this
"Short Practical Guide for Doing
Business in Brazil" which will hopefully
help you through the adventure of
starting your entrepreneurship in this
part of the world, and thereby help
boost Brazil's way up the Forbes
ranking.
Hope you enjoy, and that we may
be of help!
Sincerely,
