et al.: Alumni News & Notes Alumni News & Notes Orange Aid Smooth Transitions AUTUMN EVOKES VIVID MEMORIES of returning to school, along with all of the excitement and anxious moments that are part of that experience. In grade school, we looked forward to buying school supplies and making new friends. But in college, the beginning of the school year often evoked feelings of nervousness and bewilderment as we found our way around campus and navigated a sea of red tape. Thanks to the generosity of alumni around the country, many students coming to Syracuse University won't feel as apprehensive as we may have when we arrived. This past summer, more than 30 alumni clubs hosted New Student Send-offs for incoming students and their parents, connecting with more than soo new students in the process. These informal gatherings gave students from the same geographic areas opportunities to meet before their arrival on campus, ensuring that they see familiar faces from home those first few days at school. Also, knowledgeable volunteers from the offices of admissions and alumni relations were on hand to answer questions to help allay parents' concerns. Clearly these send-offs ease the transition from home life to campus life for parents and students alike. We are grateful to our many alumni clubs from Boston to Albuquerque, which in their own special way make sure our newest students feel part of the SU family. Lit Breul O'Rourke '77 Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations 44 As alumni across the country celebrated National Orange Day in March in honor of SU's 132nd birthday, members of the Syracuse University Alumni Club of Arizona (SUACA) hosted an Orange Day party for low-income families and homeless people associated with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Sporting SU T-shirts and hats, club members served more than 700 meals and donated clothing to needy residents of the Phoenix area. "We cut danishes, set out chairs, served food, and cleaned tables," says club president Dawn Forrest Armstrong '88. "As anyone who has worked in a restaurant knows, we worked very hard that morning. But we were rewarded with many smiles, thank-yous, and interesting conversation." The event was so successful, the club plans to host meals at St. Vincent de Paul on a quarterly basis. Armstrong says SUACA is a great way to meet interesting people and network. ''I've become friends with many generations of SU alumni, who, like me, wish to stay connected to an important part of their past while contributing to the future of the University," Armstrong says. "Through the club, we are able to give something back to the University by way of community relations, student recruiting, and scholarships." In addition to holding student send-off parties for entering freshmen, the club sponsors a Snow Lottery, which is an annual scholarship fund-raiser in which participants pledge $1 or more for every inch of snow that falls in Syracuse. And throughout the year club members gather at Phoenix-area yracuse University ~:i}~g~ Annual Ambassador Pyo Wook Han Lecture on Korean/US J United States Ambassador Thomas C. We thank them for their continuing commitment. Scott Tharler '92-Southern California Warren Kimble '57- Vermont David Belkowitz G'71- Central Virginia Gorgeous Gorges A few fortunate alumni had a remarkable opportunity to be among the last to see the Three Gorges region of China. Beginning in 2003, this majestic landscape will be changed forever with the completion of the world's largest hydroelectric dam, creating a massive artificial lake that will engulf much of the area. Realizing that time was short, the SU Alumni Association sponsored a three-week tour of China last spring. "The region was more spectacular than I imagined, " says Mary Dailey Metzger '61, who traveled with her husband, Chuck. "The entire trip was first class." The tour, led by SU Trustee Lee Blatt '51 and his wife Sydelle '51, began with Cruising the Yangtze River aboard the M.S. Victoria gave SU alumni a last chance to experience the natural beauty of the fabled Three Gorges region of China. five nights in Beijing, including side trips to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. While in Beijing, the Metzgers were eager to experience the day-to-day lives of residents, so they borrowed bicycles from their hotel and cycled through the city every morning before breakfast. Beijing's public parks teemed with people exercising, playing musical instruments, and balancing swords. "In the midst of this activity," Metzger says, "ancient imperial architecture rose above the trees, making the parks an unforgettable scene. " In Xi'an, alumni marveled at the vast terra-cotta army of Emperor Qin, visited the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and explored the Shaanxi Provincial Museum. Boarding the cruise ship M.S. Victoria in the port city of Wuhan, they began a relaxing jou, rney down the Yangtze River through the Three Gorges region, with sojourns to ancient villages along Look What's New The Class of 1961 has launched its own e-newsletter. If you would like to submit information to the newsletter about what's happening in your world, please contact Knowlton Foote, newsletter editor, at knowlton{@aol.com. the way. "Entire towns had been relocated, and we saw old dwellings in the process of being removed, " says Chuck Metzger, a geologist. "Water markers lined the river, indicating the waterline of the reservoir that would soon submerge several cities." Although construction of the dam will change the region's natural beauty forever, Mary Metzger foresees positive outcomes. "It's controversial," she says. "Some older people are unhappy about relocating, but among the younger generations, which have never had access to dry, comfortable living environments or modern conveniences, this is an opportunity to move into more material comfort. " The trip ended with three nights in Shanghai, where alumni toured the city's ancient silk industry, neighborhoods, and beautiful gardens. In Shanghai, the Metzgers continued their early morning interaction with local life. Their encounter with a group of street dancers was most memorable. "It was a thrill when a local man and I jitterbugged together," Metzger says. "My husband and I found the people very friendly." FALL 2 002 http://surface.syr.edu/sumagazine/vol19/iss3/12 45 2 et al.: Alumni News & Notes 24 and Counting This is the second in a series of stories about multigenerational SU families. The Smallwood family's roots run deep with Orange pride. Between 1865 and 1993, 24 family members have attended Syracuse University, earning degrees in everything from law to interior design. This five-generation legacy began in 1865 when John Beedon Smallwood graduated from Genesee College (Genesee College, established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Lima, New York, was moved to . Syracuse to become Syracuse University in 1870). Frances Ann Smallwood (1866), William Waltrous Smallwood (1872), and William Martin Smallwood (1896), who headed the SU biology department and donated the Smallwood Collection of Natural History books to the SU library, followed him. "Our loyalty is to Syracuse," says Shereth Landrum Coble '64, who was married to the late Stephen Smallwood '61 for 32 years. ''I'm lucky because I married into the SU tradition, and I'm very proud of it." Coble met Stephen Smallwood, her first husband, while they were both students at SU. When they met, he was a senior on a lacrosse scholarship, and she was a freshman cheerleader. To Coble, Syracuse was exactly what she was looking for in a university. "SU is just the right size and has a healthy balance of people from all over the world." Two of their three children , Todd Smallwood '88 and Trevor Smallwood '93, carried on their parents' legacy. "It just goes on and on and on," Coble says of the Smallwood family's history with SU. "When the family gets together at my home in Florida, I hang up my orange SU flag- we wave it proudly." Although it is not automatically assumed that every Smallwood will attend SU, graduates of the University talk enthusiastically about SU so often that younger members of the family are easily swayed to follow in their footsteps. "The Smallwood family line is between generations right now, so no one is currently attending SU," Coble says. "But I hope that will change soon so we can keep the tradition going." 46 S Y RAC USE UNIV ERS I TY M AGAZ I NE Published by SURFACE, 2002 Syracuse University alumni and their spouses reunited last winter for a fun-filled schooner trip out of Key West, Florida. Quite to the contrary, according to Sharad Devarajan, president of Gotham Entertainment Group, the licensed regional publisher of both DC and Marvel comics. The company, which also holds print rights for Warner Bros. World Wide Publishing in South Asia, publishes Superman, SpiderMan, The F/intstones, and more than a dozen other popular American comic books and graphic magazines. "We reach about 1.5 million South Asian readers each month with a selection of titles in English, Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam, and we are about to launch new titles in the Punjabi, Telugu, and Urdu languages," says the College of Visual and Performing Arts graduate. "We are particularly excited about the Urdu edition, which will bring us into a market of 250 million Muslims in northern India and Pakistan." While brand recognition is the easy part of selling American comic books in South Asia, cultural integration of the characters and stories often requires adapting the stories to local customs and adding jargon. Nevertheless, Devarajan believes the universal qualities exhibited by comic book superheroes-courage, tolerance, and protection of the weak-transcend most cultural barriers. "As a kid growing up in India, I remember reading the local comic books, which were based on gods and religious heroes. The supernatural powers of American comic book heroes fit in very well with those traditions," says Devarajan. "I believe the most prevalent theme in American superhero comics is that an individual can persevere against adversity or evil." Devarajan has the attention of emerging readers and he takes the responsibility seriously. He runs anti-tobacco and anti-drug public service ads in his editions, and has added special features, including "Profiles in Heroism" on real-life people. The 9/ 11 terrorist attacks have added a dimension to Devarajan's mission. In a special edition of Marvel's Spider-Man, which Gotham published shortly after the attack, the web-spinner, while grieving over the World Trade Center tragedy, warns the reader: "Do not as [the terrorists] do or the war is lost before it is even begun." "Most comic book readers in South Asia are between 10 and 16 years old," Devarajan says. "The superheroes paint a vivid picture for them of what America stands for. I think that when used as part of a cohesive media and educational strategy, comics can be a tool that helps change negative perceptions and instills messages of tolerance and acceptance." -David Marc F A L L 2 002 http://surface.syr.edu/sumagazine/vol19/iss3/12 49 6 et al.: Alumni News & Notes ExxonMobil Masterpiece Theatre's American Collection. During commercial breaks, Gurin, the show's executive producer, and his staff review the previous round and prepare Robinson for her next verbal assault. "We know the practicing doctor should have known that the answer was a rib, or the English teacher should have known that Shakespeare question," he says. "If they screw up in something they specialize in, then it's all the better. We send Anne back out, and she does her best to embarrass and annoy them." The show has been Gurin's biggest success in his 16 years in the television industry. Other notable credits include producing such reality specials, series, and game shows as Twenty One for NBC, a fouryear revival of Candid Camera for CBS, and FOX specials When Cameras Cross the Line and Only Joking. Before opening his full-service production business, the Gurin Company, in 1997, he was a writer on MTV's Remote Control game show and Nickelodeon's Super Sloppy Double Dare. Gurin says he developed his love for writing and live performances as an undergraduate at the Newhouse School, where he studied screenwriting and was involved with a student-run group, Syracuse University Musical Stage. "My memories of Newhouse are terrific," he says. "When I was there, l was really focused on writing. I thought I'd spend most of my career writing movies and did not expect to be in the business of reality television." Gurin's company recently purchased the rights to two old-time shows, You Asked for It and Name That Tune, which he hopes to market to networks overseas and in the United States. He's learned that success only comes by taking chances. " Who would have thought that America would embrace a middle-aged woman from England?" he says of Robinson. "As long as you keep trying, a well-executed new idea will always find a way to get on TV." No matter how often he hears Robinson's icy farewell - or others' freq uently uttered imitations- he never grows t ired of it. But when the show's popularity wanes, he knows it too must receive the infamous send-off, "You are the weakest link. Goodbye." "That's part of the business," Gurin says. JOYCE HERGENHAN HAS FACED A FEW CURVEBALLS IN HER LIFE, but her journey from a small-town girl to a top corporate executive has been a home run. After high school graduation, she left the tranquility of Armonk, New York, for the hustle and bustle of Syracuse University, where she attended school on a full scholarship. "I wanted to be a sportswriter," says Hergenhan, whose police-officer father taught her the intricacies of keeping baseball scores. "But at that time, women weren't welcome in the profession, so I set my sights on becoming a reporter." As Commencement approached, Hergenhan, who majored in political science and was an editor for the Daily Orange, applied for a job with the Associated Press. However, when she walked into the interview, the recruiter said bluntly, "You're wasting my time-l've never hired a woman, and I never will." Undeterred, she landed a reporting job at the White Plains Reporter Dispatch in northern Westchester County, where she had worked summers. While there, she was recruited by U.S. Representative Ogden R. Reid to be his press secretary and speechwriter. After four years of commuting between Washington and New York and about to be married, Hergenhan returned to reporting, working for the Gannett Newspaper group in Westchester. She covered Consolidated Edison as part of her beat, and in 1972 was recruited as Con Ed's media relations manager. "For several years, it seems I was on the news every night explaining energy pricing or nuclear safety," says Hergenhan, who went on to become senior vice president of public affairs, the first woman to hold that post in the utility industry. She also earned an M.B.A. degree from Columbia University on weekends. After 10 years at Con Ed, Hergenhan was recruited by Jack Welch of General Electric to become GE's vice president for corporate public relations. In 1997 she was elected to the Syracuse University Board of Trustees, and in 1998 was named president of the GE Fund, GE's philanthropic foundation. In the wake of September 11, a $1o million GE Fund grant spearheaded New York City's Twin Towers Fund, which raised $200 million for the families of police officers, firefighters, and rescue workers killed in the line of duty. Although thwarted in her sportswriting ambition, Hergenhan is one of SU's biggest sports fans, attending several games a year. This past season she was one of two alumni who led the campaign to raise $1.5 million to name the basketball court after -Christine Yackel longtime coach Jim Boeheim '66, G'73. Joan Batchelder G'82 (MAX} of Patrick Besha '99 THERE'S NOTH lNG PARTICULARLY UN USUAL about a recent college graduate going out west to make movies. But Patrick Besha decided to go way out west-about s,ooo miles past Hollywood. Soon after completing a dual degree from the College of Arts and Sciences (English) and the S.l. Newhouse School of Public Communications (television-radio-film), Besha joined the Peace Corps, and was shipped off to the tiny South Pacific nation of Samoa, where he makes documentary videos for the country's Ministry of Environment. The Berne, New York, native works with the ministry to edu· cate people about the environmental issues they face on the island country. "My recent projects include documentaries about the biodiversity of Samoa and several ocean surveys, where we shoot marine habitats and fishing grounds," says Besha. " I also make public· service commercials for Samoan TV. The task is to explain the dangers of synthetics to a people who have eaten, built homes, and made baskets and clothes with only natural materials for thousands of years. Some of my masterpieces include Ozone Man vs. the Ozone Hole and Say No to Plastic Bags." Besha is also creating a feature-length documen· tary concerning daily life in villages that are attempting major development projects. "I interview chiefs, go to meetings, and talk to the villagers," he says. "The film is called FaaSamoa, which means 'the Samoan way."' Glamour is in short supply at this little known corner of t he world cinema scene. Much of Besha's work consists of slogging through rainforests and mangroves, and venturing across coral reefs to try to get a few good shots. Though not paid much, he finds the experience generally satisfying. "One of the best things I've done is live with a Samoan family," he says. "I got intense language training and an intimate look at a Samoan village." There are, however, exceptions to the rule. "Recently I paddled through a mangrove system and caught dengue fever," he says. "That was not worthwhile." Asked if he had found any unique mementos during his sojourn in the South Seas, he says, " Even though I'm a foreigner, people greet me as if they know me, and when I look surprised, they explain, 'We're all cousins.' That's something I'd like to bring back with me.'' - David Marc 54 Gloucester, Mass., retired from her position as f ixed income chief at MFS Invest ment Management. King, is chair of the physicians Patrick Morelli '66 LIKE MILLIONS OF OTHERS, sculptor Patrick Morelli watched his television screen in horror as the World Trade Center Towers crumbled into rui ns. Now he is doing his part to commemorate the tragedy by creati ng a permanent memorial in New Jersey overlooking t he former Twin Towers site. "I've never seen an event so profoundly affect people," Morelli says. On the day of the attack, hundreds of peo ple gathered at Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey, for a panoramic view of the smoky Manhattan skyline. Over time, lighted cand les, victims' photographs, and Ame rican flags wou ld cover t he site, which was later chosen by Essex County officials as the ideal location for a permanent place of remembrance. Last November the memorial committee selected Morelli-who is best known as the creator of Behold, a 10-foot bronze monument at t he tomb of Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta to design the memorial sculpture. Morelli's 12-foot sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled on t he first anniversary of the attack. It features a life-sized bronze figure of a small girl cuddling a teddy bear, a teen-age boy holding a lantern toward the former Twin Towers, a bald eagle with outstretched wings symbolizing freedom and protection, and an open "Book of Remembrance." A gran ite wall next to the memorial will list the names of all those w ho died in the attack. Morelli used his 7-year-o ld daughter as a model for " Gabriella," the girl clutching a teddy bear. " I wanted to reflect the vulnerability and loss the children are feeling, which is seen directly in t hose who lost a loved one," he says. " It's important to provide a channel to help people move from this period of grief to one of rebuilding and renewal." -Melissa Dittmann F ALL 2 0 0 2 http://surface.syr.edu/sumagazine/vol19/iss3/12 57 14 et al.: Alumni News & Notes t rack of the fi rm's health care law practice group in Sy racuse. Karen is a regist ered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Robert is a software engineer at Avaya. FOR SOMEONE WITH AN EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND in child and family studies and marriage and family therapy, Cheryl Hoffman spends a surprising amount of time these days thinking about building. As director of development at Rocketown Youth Services-a nonprofit agency in Nashville, Tennessee, that serves disenfranchised youth- Hoffman has been actively involved in securing funds for, locating, and planning renovations of a new youth club facility for the organization. And as program coordinator for Rocketown's young adult mentor program, the Bounty Hunter Coalition, Hoffman seeks ways to build bridges between mentors and teens. "We know the power of one adult relationship to help a teenager through the troubled times of adolescence," Hoffman says. "My job is to educate the Bounty Hunters about the serious issues today's youth face, including drugs and alcohol, depression, eating disorders, gangs, physical and sexual abuse, and even suicide." Rocketown was founded by Grammy Award-winning Christian musician Michael W. Smith, who recognized that area teens needed a safe and fun place to hang out. Hoffman started working there four years ago-first as a volunteer, and then as a grant writer, helping obtain funding for a new building, which is expected to open in late fall. "Last winter we signed the lease on a former warehouse that is being renovated into a clubhouse," she says. "We're planning everything from a basketball half-court, coffee shop, and cyber cafe to a fine arts studio, nightclub, and even a skate park." Hoffman, who believes the new club will draw 1oo,ooo teens the first year, develops training programs for the young adult mentors who volunteer at Rocket own. "We look for people from all walks of life who can relate to kids," she says. "And we look for a talent, skill, or hobby that can serve as a bridge to a teen with similar interests. Being a mentor is basically about being a friend. It is so simple to form a relationship with a teen, and it can make a drastic difference in their lives. Having one person who is invested in them can help change a destructive choice they were considering. That's what we look to do." Within the next four years, Rocketown plans to establish eight additional facilities across the country. "I look forward to taking our training program to other cities," Hoffman says. "Every city needs something like this." -Amy Shires SYRAC US E UNIVERSITY Published 58 by SURFACE, 2002 MAGAZINE RobertS. Wetmore '98 ---~"" (ARC).
